I LOVE that they're all wearing different traditional quilt square designs on the bodice of their dresses--another art that needs to be kept alive.

I was born and raised in Kentucky (40 miles from Lexington) and I can remember my mom and dad dancing like this. My uncles would play the banjo, fiddle and guitar at the local school and all the neighborhood folks would come and dance the "flat foot". Much simpler times.... Anyway, love this video -brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

When you watch and listen to these wonderful performers, just think what America has come to. It would be great to know that this way of life could be preserved in this decadent society.

You should get out more. It's still around. There are many festivals that celebrate this art. That is where to meet people to learn where to go for lessons, where are the clubs that meet regularly, to to play an instrument and what is needed from patrons and supporters if there is a real desire to preserve these art forms. Begin with the festivals like Shindig on the Green- Asheville NC, Appalachian Stringband Festival (aka Clifftop) - Clifftop, WV. You see whst you're focused on. The world is in rough shape but its not all bad. Adjust your focus 😉

Just started watching these recently, and of course more and more keep popping up, and I just wish SOMEONE would introduce this to the youth in the big cities. Might take a little while, but packaged right it most definitely would catch on. And good stuff would follow.

Scots- Irish (Scots moved by England to Ireland) migrated to America in the late 1600's early 1700's due to conflict between Protestant and Catholics in Ireland (still going on today). Moved thru Baltimore to Appalachians due to hostility of early Americans towards immigrants. They adapted well to mountains as it was not unlike Scotland. Became adept Indian fighters and lent support to Washington teaching them guerilla tactics - this helped turn tide of American Revolutionary war 1776

I am a decendant of the Scotch-irish, GERMAN JEW immigrants to Mount Mitchell NC. Clogging is an American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains. As they were settled in the mid 1700's by the Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch-Germans, the folk dances of each area met and began to combine, the beginning of clog dancing. Accompanied by rousing fiddle and bluegrass music, the word "Clog" comes from Gaelic and means "time". Clogging is a dance that is done in time with the music

The Lancashire mill gitrls we carried in our buses and coaches would often start an impromptu clog dance usually round the bemused driver (me) but and this is the but it was on cobbles or setts, so hence the local dialect question to a boy/girl "Are ye sparkin?" 400 girls with only a handful of overseers made a hot mixture but dangerous as the local lads still practised "clog purring" (fighting) on the moors and you don't want to go there! All about 50 years ago.
