    Great tips Greendot-A word about the original hose clamps. Many complain that the original clamps leak no matter what you do or try. Here's a few tips on how to make them work:
    1. The steel connector pipes must be smooth, painted or not.
    2. Before installing clamp, use either some oil or silicone spray on the hose where the clamp is going to go. The reason is for this is the little piece of clamp metal tends to bind and it will create a bump where it will leak. That little piece needs to slide freely to get a good fit.
    3. Permatex # 2 used very sparingly will seal but should be the last option.
    Hope this helps

      Great tips. My Father was a mechanic during the time. I grew up with postwar Jeeps . A smooth surface and a little heavy grease helps the hose on and helps seal it.

    Very nice video and good tips. Going to do the glass etch on mine. I like that. Orientating the hose clamps (as you've done) all in the same direction adds that finishing touch as well.

      Thanks Rob, the glass etch is a really nice simple touch but like I said be very careful with it, its strong stuff!

    Your Jeep looks great. Bakelite rain covers would look great on your spark plugs.

      Beware of those things! I took mine off because they were shorting out and causing a miss in the jeep.

      Dino is correct, lots of people have had issues with the covers causing ignition problems I also believe the covers were omitted later in the war as they were more hassle than they were worth! Good suggestion though for an earlier jeep if you can sort out any ignition problems with them!

    When you get your Lathe! The first thing you can do is skim off the bolt head stampings, and simply turn the radial groove in the head, so simple, and without the risk of using an angle grinder and getting nasty grooves across the bold head, there is also another good, practical tweak for the break fluid tank, this is a pipe that runs up to a small tank held on the bulkhead, it make brake fluid checks and top up much easier. @Greendot319  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris I've only just got a tool cabinet! The lathe will have to wait ;)

      @453421abcdefg12345 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Greendot 319: You can see how even a small cheap foreign lathe could be so useful here, just a small one to start off with would do most of the small component mods you will ever need, we all want a super heavy duty lathe, but if we wait until one comes along you will wait forever, I gave my small lathe away when I got my Colchesters, but the small one was just as handy for these small turning jobs, and very satisfying to be able to do the job right away.

      its a good idea. For the next GPW i'm going to get a press, a pillar drill, Mig welder and a lathe. Will make everything much more straight forward and cheaper in the long run.

    • @453421abcdefg12345
      @453421abcdefg12345 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greendot319: I think the Pillar Drill and a small press are a very good addition, and if you buy wisely you can get both at a good price, Warco Tools is a source for good cheap but serviceable things like that, the MIG welder is a bit more difficult to find, the cheap ones are not easy to use due to amperage fluctuation but the more expensive types( £1000 up) are very easy to use, this is true of most things in the machinery line, if you are experienced you can make allowances for their poor design, but unfortunately most people have to start out as inexperienced and lacking funds, they quickly give up thinking using these is difficult.

    Another tip might be to use a period-looking battery. Yours looks perfect but imagine how awful it would look with a modern Halfords or Bosch fitted!

  • @shurlin79

    Use power drill to hold and spin the bolt and flap disk on the angle grinder to shave the head markings off. You'll get a nice even circular patern on the bolt head then.

    IN MY OPINION... these Jeeps are the most OVER restored vehicles there are. It’s not an airship made by NASA. It’s a Jeep.... made to get through the worst terrain and mud as anything. It’s nice to have original examples in museums to look at but when I get one of these it will look right and it will be made right, including new parts that matter like battery cables. I do like original look but I’m not going to use 70 year old essential parts when new ones, that look right, are available... no, it doesn’t make a “BIG” difference. I do appreciate your enthusiasm though.

      I'm with you, Dean. I drive my jeep. Hence, I'll keep my Saginaw steering box, overdrive, and front disc brakes. I can appreciate rivet counting, but it's just not my thing.

    Thanks for this - very interesting for a noob to the hobby such as myself. Sadly it also means I’ve just learned that the gooey “crud” I spent a couple hours carefully scouring off my hose clamps was likely original cosmoline.....☹️

    Hi Matt, excellent as always. Hows about one on cleaning lustreless olive drab?. Ive tried cleaning the tony sudds mix and matt1 using petrol, it does a great job, the only thing that has worked for me so far. Cheers. Will

      Will do, I will say don't use petrol though, its dangerous stuff and dries the paint right out. Paraffin is what you need to get hold of, i'll cover that in a little video for you, cheers! Matt

    I use real horsehair around the radiator. I found a factory that produces it for expensive matrasses.

    one thing to make it better... would be to let it get a little used looking it's not like everyone wants a Beauty Queen. it's a Jeep and they like to work and play in the Dirt.. they weren't made to Parade around the Asphalt..p.s. I have a 46 and a 47..
