- We recently went through the process of getting married in Japan as an American & Vietnamese couple. The process is pretty straightforward for foreigners, but we couldn't find any information about someone in our situation getting married in Japan, so we thought we'd make this video sharing our experience.
If you are thinking to get married in Japan, there is some useful information in this video for what is necessary for two foreigners to get legally married here.

can a Vietnamese get married in Japan on a tourist visa? We want to get married without the hassle (and bribery) in Vietnam. I am not residing in Japan either and would there on a tourist visa. (visa waiver program). Or have you any knowledge of a Vietnamese citizen pulling it off?

Please tell us about the marriage ceremony and the kimonos. Since I was with the USAF in Vietnam and Japan, I find your vlog very interesting.
Unfortunately, we did not have a ceremony in Japan, so I cannot talk about those things in any detail. We had a "small" ceremony in Vietnam, so I may talk about that in a future video. As for the kimonos, we were just wearing those for a local cultural event we attended. We did take some official wedding photos, which are still getting edited, but we will share some of those later once we get them back.

Much easier than in the US. In 2020, it costs over $2,000 to marry a foreigner and apply for all the paperwork (without a lawyer) not including all the time spent. Congrats! 💒🚴🚴♀️

She needed to leave the country and come back on a different visa for us to get married.
What's about tourist which only gonna stay for a few days or weeks? Can tourist also getting married there?

great explanation. You don't think about these complications until you're in this situation. My daughter lives in Taiwan and ia married to a Taiwanese guy. She had to get loads of papers signed and sorted in the run up to their wedding both in Taiwan and here. In the UK, that had to be done by a Notary and then had to be translated, in the UK into chinese, wasn't cheap. However, even though she's been married for many years now and we have three grandchildren, she's not still legally married in the UK, because the UK doesn't recognise Taiwan because of this stupid one china thing. Anyway, we're hoping she can get this and the kids British passports sorted when she visits next year.
Wow, I didn't realize Taiwan's marriages weren't recognized abroad. I hope they can get that resolved soon!

If you have a common name, you can look up the "official" katakana version, but really you are free to choose whatever katakana name you want. The easiest way is to just tell your name to a Japanese person and they can help you pick something with the closest matching pronunciation
Hi i love your video. I had a residence card for japan but left to work in america, but my fiancé is still in school in japan and still has her residence card. Its to hard to much of a hassle to get the K-1 because she doesn’t want to stay after marrying, she will go back to japan. So in short my question is can i go there on a travel visa and marry her. She is (Chinese)
Thanks! Unless there are special rules for Chinese, you should be able to get married in Japan on a travel visa. That's what my now wife and I did. You may need extra steps to register the marriage in China though

Thanks! It doesn't matter where you get married, but getting married in Japan may simplify the paperwork. After you are married, you just need to apply for a dependent of Japanese spouse visa, and you will need translations of your marriage certificate.
Hat's off to any non-Japanese navigating anything unusual in a Japanese City Hall. From what I understand, 'modern' ID systems use your name as shown on your passport. Local offices-sort/file data in katakana. Even with a Japanese name, being non-Japanese, my name has to be in katakana.

This channel goes over cycling + life in Japan, and I thought this video would be useful to people who experience getting married in Japan. I realize it's a small % of my viewers, but I think these kinds of videos really help those people out.
I'll be making a few other videos like this periodically, but feel free to just skip them if you're not interested.
Cycling VLOGS take a lot more time / preparation / editing, so it's really hard for me to make those weekly since I have a full time job and weather does not always play nice on weekends. I aim to get at least 2 out a month though ;)
