- Some would like to say that I lost half my dwarves during the life of this fortress, but I'm an optimist, so I say I kept half my dwarves during the life of this fortress. It's all about perspective.

some cafes and diners might have extra entrances closed for winter due to cold but this one has the back entrance closed for years due to a prolonged war between serpent men and a forgotten beast
I'm imagining a cheerful little "opening soon!" sign on the door next to the dire "DO NOT OPEN" warnings and pictograms of dwarves being slaughtered by monsters, lol

Oh that noise? That's just the ancient horror from the depths that is periodically burning everything past that door, we've just decided to keep the door closed, don't worry about it .
lets hope that nobody notices the body of the dwarf who sacrificed herself floating past the tavern, lol

In this video, I learned that the water control room and its access passageway should not be placed on the same level as the water channel that is about to be filled
It can be, you just have to channel out the last tile for the water inlet from the level above
Yeah and most of all honestly is to remember whenever you trying to "release" a liquid on a path do so on a level above with channeling, much safer.
and use one or two doors instead of a floodgate wich are watertight as long nobody walks thrugh and then lock those with a lever
Or use a wider corridor, mine a single square connected to a 3 wide corridor.
Or, dig the final square at a diagonal to the water source to diffuse water pressure.
The dwarven woman sacrifice felt like it was from a nineties thriller movie. RIP dwarven woman you'll never be forgotten.
This feels like a story our parents use to tell us when they had to walk to school back when they were kids.
In my opinion this is exactly how to play DF, as a story telling device and not as a min-max game. Well played sure I enjoyed enormously this story, thank you for sharing. I loved the river.

Agree... but seeing some of the FUN ends to fortresses, these dwarves do actually have it pretty good.

The power of Dwarf Fortress is every game is a different experience, and you just arent able to match the pure chaos and loving buffoonery.
Oh the stories DF can produce. Loving the new Steam version.
My current run, I have 40-odd war dogs, and have been constantly training one group of dwarves to only wear gauntlets. The captain has been here from the beginning and has good teaching and *biting* abilities. They have all become very good wrestlers, punchers/kickers/biters. They all have at least 3 war dogs assigned to them.
We moved *right next to* some goblin fortresses on purpose. When they come, the dogs go at them en-masse, one or two will die before my wrestlers run over, wrestle down the goblins, who are subsequently torn apart by dogs and dwarves who fight like dogs.

We're 8 seconds in, and this is already one of the most dwarfy things I've ever heard.
I recently started getting into DF because of the Steam version, and me and my friends stumbled on to your videos and fell in love. The stories are so well done, and I love your voice! It's such a calm and silly atmosphere to vibe to. Your thumbnails are also simple but very capturing, and they almost remind me of Baba Is You xP.

That baby who got abandoned in the cavern probably turned into some kind of subterranean Tarzan dwarf.
I once had a very similar idea to that river, instead making a waterfall through the middle of the tavern so we could have mist :). turns out it was mostly just good for muddy tavern brawls

emergency alert... create a burrow and then add everyone to it. You can then pause the burrow to deactivate it.

Really cool idea
Regarding water control, if you build a diagonal 1-1 hole next to the water source you can actually reset the level at which your water will rise to. Also creates its own source in the process.
I've always wanted to do this! I just assumed that patrons would end up more terrified than pleased when a cave spider webs the whole tavern. But maybe this way I'd finally have a reason to approve all those monster slayers who come to my fortress armed with nothing but copper armor and books as weapons.
This made me remember the cities of Tibia, that had their underground areas filled with monsters that could overrun the city at any moment.

Im pretty sure it's been done in some capacity, but a Cavern Tavern DnD setting would be sick.
I actually tried to do something really similar in my first fort! ...Except for some reason my "Monster Slayers" spend all their time at the tavern and the temple...
Sounds like it’s time for a cavern tavern / temple combo.
Try forbidding visitors from entering your temple

I always find this interesting as so far I haven't encountered anything significant in any of my fortresses aside from a forgotten beast that died before it could kill my overtrained squad of 4. All in all I enjoy stories like this as they give me hope that something interesting will happen.

3:00 I found out its better to use doors if you have to run away, but also you can get to the tile above it and dig it out that way with the channeling if you have finite dwarves
these are great little slices of life in the fortress, i mean this one is a totally bonkers idea fit for only for DF, but still its a nice format. little short videos are great!
I've just stumbled on such a place (cavern) while trying to find resource while under the constant assault of "elite" Necromancer forces. I guess the phrase "between a rock and a hard place" applies.
