Canyon Spectral AL 6.0 | 27.5 Trail Bike of the Year 2019 | Mountain Bike Rider

- Pound for pound, there is no better 27.5in trail bike that the Canyon Spectral AL 6.0. It pedals with aplomb, it feels light and agile on flatter trails and when it’s time rumble, the extra travel and dialled geometry means it’s every bit as comfortable going 12 rounds as delivering a knockout blow. The MaxxGrip front tyre is overkill for UK riding but it is the only speccing flaw. Even accounting for shipping, you could buy a faster rolling MaxxTerra front tyre and still have plenty of change from £2,500.

Such a nice feeling to know that the bike i ordered two weeks ago was just been crowned MBR trail bike of the year! Hahaha Nice review btw!
Bogdan Chițescu same here :D
Gratz!
I had last years. The frame didn't last six months. I never buy another Canyon.
@El Salvador rode it.
@El Salvador no not yet. At this point i dont want a new frame. The failures in the last frame nearly killed me. They seem to have a real problem with AL, their carbon might be better.
I have a 2018 AL 6.0 and I couldn’t be happier. It’s an awesome bike!
My wife and I both have the 2019 6.0 models. We love them, we do everything on them as well. Xc, enduro, or park...handles it all very well! Only thing I may upgrade is the brakes, other than that the bikes are perfect!
Nice to ear that you also do XC ! I'm riding a hardtail and thinking about going on a full suspension, I love doing technical stuff when training and going to XC competitions on weekends and really hesitating with choosing a Trail bike as I also like long rides and climbing 🤔 so many choices on the market !
That's a pretty sweet bike.
Glad to see you here
Ive got a '19 spectral. Great bike. Incredible value.
Why no 2019 YT Jeffsy 27.5 in this test? To me it's the natural competition of the Spectral. Everyone seems to be reviewing the 29er version only.
Well I think if the Spectral still had a 29" version then everyone would ignore the 27.5" in these tests
Agreed. I was nearly dead set on the Spectral before looking at the Jeffsy and now I think the Jeffsy takes the W for me
@@michaelh5967 But the Jeffsy is quite short if you don't go for the really expensive ones
@@th_js You must be looking at an earlier model. The 2019 geos of these bikes are damn near identical. Plus the Jeffsy edges it out in the weight dept and is $500 less. I've also heard Canyon's customer service can be iffy. This along with a few other things considered, and I have to go with the Jeffsy. But regarding Matt Lowndes Smith's original comment, I didn't realize before that they chose the Jeffsy as the winner in the 29er category. They prob were just trying to avoid being redundant in the bikes they're featuring.
@@michaelh5967 The 2019 YT Jeffsy 29 AL Base has a reach of 465mm and the CF Pro has a reach of 494mm in XL. Do you call that almost identical? The Canyon Spectral has a reach of 482mm across the range. Also I had a fault on my Canyon Spectral AL 6.0's shock and we sent it to them and got it back fixed, no problems. I'm not saying the Jeffsy is a bad bike, but I just thought I'd point these things out.
Just purchased the Spectral CF 7.0! Can not wait to hit the trails with it!
Super nice looking bike at amazing price, I'd personally choose this version in raw aluminium with orange details, it looks amazing. Great review guys 🙂👍.
You said if you have al long torso and short legs that a large is better than a medium? Seems that would be the opposite. I'm 181 cm with inseam 79cm. Canyon says size medium but you are saying large may be a better fit?
Shame every bike under the sun is out of stock :(
I have the 2018 one and I love it
Update of the situation: Sold the Spectral a year ago, bought the same bike back yesterday! I have a sweet Pole Stamina 180 but I just love the Spectral, so I'm happy to ride it again!
Love your videos so much. Thanks for doing what you do!
What I don't understand; What do they mean with, it's not a full enduro bike. Where does it lack versus an Enduro bike? The travel of this trail bike is immens to be honest (150/160), where do you draw the line of it not being usable for Enduro. Really doubting between buying myself a new Spectral (I've got the 2016 version) or a Strive.
I hear you.I'm debating Spectral vs Capra myself.
It's geometry, it's travel, it's sizing, it's frame stiffness and weight. Most 27.5in EWS bikes now run 170mm travel front and rear. That said, you can ride it super hard - Joe Barnes regularly raced the Spectral when he rode for Canyon in EWS races.
When are you guys doing an enduro bike of the year
Pierce O'Leary we’ll have to ponder that one! We’d only do it if we thought we could do it properly. Would certainly be a lot of fun!
@@MBRmagazine And...When are you going to do the same for xc/marathon bike of the year? :o
Different people like to ride in different ways. If you are an aggressive trail rider with speed as a goal, it sounds like the Spectral is a great fit. What if you ride technical chunk, tight trails, or enjoy getting more air than speed? It would be great to get an overview on the competing bikes and what they do well so people can decide which ones will likely fit their specific riding style.
Good on you for standardising tyres for the test and being consistent with frame sizes. Suspension component choice on these mid/low range bikes can seriously change the feel of the bike .. so I personally take comparisons at this level with a grain of salt ... you really need to get out and ride the bikes and make your own decisions. People complain when the top spec versions are compared but to my thinking that at least tells you how the frames compare when they're at their best and component choices them become your choice for compromise if you can't afford the top spec bikes.
Agree with your point, however suspension components are also very expensive to upgrade, so it makes sense to buy the best complete package (save for easily changed parts such as saddles, grips, tyres) at any given price point.
@@MBRmagazine which tyre were used in the test?
@@stevehopper8086 Minion DHF 2.5in and Minion DHR II 2.4in in EXO Plus
Knocking on 2021... the 2021 27.5 AL is still this same frame from basically 2018?
Been waiting for this, thanks! Really thinking of pulling the trigger on that Spectral!
If you do, make sure to post a riding video and/or review, cuz I'm looking into this bike within the next year
Do just that, it's an amazing bike!
Where is Alan from? I can hear Irish, Welsh, USA & a smattering of other accents in his voice. It's really quite mesmerising to listen to. Not distracting me from the article at all - ha ha
Keep up the great reviews guys 👍
What are the potential pros and cons of making this a mullet bike with a 29er up front? I was thinking about upgrading the fork straight away anyway. Curious to know what your thoughts are. Cheers!
dream bike, wish they were in stock
They have the CF’s on sale 1,000 off almost same price a AL
where would you place the yt jeffsy cf comp 27.5? im a smaller guy so i prefer the smaller wheelsize and the jeffsy really caught my eyes. But i cant find any information about it, because everyone is talking about the 29er version!(hope my english isnt too bad)
Gday mate.
Can this frame fit a 38t chainring?
If not, what is the max size?
Thank you.
Could you make a comparison between Canyon Spectral vs Canyon Lux 8.0, I'm a XC rider looking to upgrade my 2010 Cannondale
Great review but for direct sale with similar pricing would you recommend Radon jab 9.0 or Canyon spectral 6.0 ? Less heavier, magura brake, pike rtc3 ? I am so confused 🤷♂️ please help 😂
Question, your remark seems odd; someone who is 5'10 struggled to get the saddle low enough on the Large yet you say the Medium would be too short? That seems contradictory. If the saddle height is too high on a Large for someone with short legs you would size down, not up,... right?
Difference between saddle height and cockpit length. The bars/front wheel are too close on the medium, but the saddle won't go down far enough on the large because the seat tube is too long.
Still makes no sense. If you can reach ground from lowest height, the L would be worse choice. Need to change the cockpit on the M or buy another bike as that is a major flaw.
JUST ORDERED!! CANT WAIT!!
Comparable to Bronson? Same travel front and back.
Mine arrives in 4 weeks. Can't wait
El Salvador he crashed and broke his fingers. He can’t type no more
Just ordered the spectral al 6
I really cant understand how that front tyre makes so much difference. It always boils down to tyres with the chap on the right?
Tyres are super important mate.
Whats better the radon swoop 8.0 2019, calibre sentry, marin alpine trail 7 or this? Although I'd prefer a 29er.
Farid Moulaye look at canyon strive maybe
I really like the look of the T-130. I think it may be my next bike.
@DavidYeti575 I'm glad to hear that!
Why is it not an Enduro bike? What's the difference, if any?
I urgently want to pull the trigger. Can the 2019 spectral CF 7 do well on ROCKY north california terrain? I am not expert, not super fast or jumping. I value a bike that is stable and inspires confidence, helps me improve too. And can handle hitting ROCKS! Also I'm 5 ft 11, so probably a large.
I'm comparing to yeti sb5+, mojo 3, devinci troy 27.5, etc.
Thanks, fellas!
Oh and my buddy is a newbie, is nearly 6 foot 3", 245lbs, so I'm thinking an XL canyon 29er. Do you recommend the neuron??
Hi Joseph, we haven't ridden the latest Devinci Troy or the SB5+ so can't really comment on those bikes, but the Spectral is a great all-rounder and definitely capable enough. We would choose a size large. The Neuron has much more of an XC slant than the Spectral.
You will test a Mondraker bikes?
Like to see this bike in 29 , I know some will say the strive is that bike ,
But they are different
Hmm. Now I'm a bit conflicted. They say it's not enduro-worthy, and here I was going to try it out in the bike park :O
Thoughts?
It'll be fine! Don't worry, just have fun!
It has a category 4 rating. Also there have been several cases of rear triangle failure. NOT a bike park bike.
All of theses were on 2018 with al triangle due to manufacturing issue. Problem fixed. This bike is cat. 4 and it can handle park all day
You should get your hands on some bikes from Pole like the evolink and the stamina 180 and 140.
I agree.
We have actually ridden the original Evolink and made a video on it.
Love this Bike. The only point i don‘t like is the weight. Is it a good bike in the uphill?
Thinking about buy this bike and change both tires. In fact you could save 700 grams of rotating mass
New model choose...Stealth or Trail Teal?..go!
stealth definitely
Are the AL 6.0 components better than the components of the CF7.0?
Yes, entry level carbon bikes have worse components compared to the top end aluminium bikes
im glad i buy mine great bike
I was now finally ready to pull the trigger on this one, only to learn that I'd have to wait 4-5 months for shipment. So that's not going to happen! Crazy to me that a huge company like Canyon can't do better than that!
Seriously? I just noticed that they say the spectrals are finally IN STOCK
@@JD-fx1np Yup seriously! If you want it in stealth then you have to wait until late august/start september. If you want the infraraw then it's easier.
whats the stroke length? The 2018 one is 230x60 and canyon just increased the stroke to gain more travel. Does anyone know the new sizing?
Are you looking to turn the 2018 one to a 2019 one?
Yes, only change in stroke. 230x65 I have upgraded my 18
@@andreaslundindotcom thanks
I have this like endurobike and I ride on bike parks and trails too.
Where is the Ibis Ripmo that has been discussed by lots of pro as best trail bike?
Ibis Ripmo is too expensive to hit our sub £3.5k price point i'm afraid. We actually tested the XT 1X Werx version last year and you can find that review on our website.
Great product and company
How spectral compares to gt force 2019?
What size have this Bike???
Richard Matenaer just watch the video🙈 its L
Going to buy the 2020 version of this I think. I’m 5’9” and canyon recommends a medium, do you think this is the right size?
You should be fine on a large. Just check you can get the right saddle height with the dropper post.
Canyon Spectral al 6.0 or Canyon Torque al 6.0? The torque is just 100€ more...
The Torque is Enduro tho
The way the reviewer breezed over a factory recall because they made it wrong was odd.Take bits off, pack it up again, wait for a courier to pick it up,be without a bike for a while....yeah ..hey...that’s ok....ummmm.....nah.
Definitely not ideal, but that's the flipside of buying direct - you save money up front, but if anything goes wrong you can't just take it back to your local dealer.
Anyone got any comments on the spectral cf7.0
im 5'8, nearly 5'9. What frame size should I get?
i would get the medium one. you would be right in the middle
Torque al 6 or spectral al 6 ?
Spectral
Did you buy any of those bikes?
If anyone can answer what’s the best full suspension and hardtail for 1000-1600
My answer would be "find a buddy that knows a lot about bikes and search second-hand together with him".
Heres a decent one www.amazon.com/NOVETE-Stainless-Functions-Settings-Removable/dp/B07QFRDFT5/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1556133020&sr=1-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&dpPl=1&dpID=51FQaBWJSJL&ref=plSrch
FuGgE no water bottle cage tho? Is the toast even boost spacing? Not worth the money
Donald Trump what about full suspension
Matthew calibre bossnut
I have a 2019 canyon spectral but it came with a faulty fox seatpost out of the box so can't ride it. I have sent the seatpost back under warranty and that was a month ago!! Not impressed with canyon.
You should have shipped the whole bike back
I received mine today and it was damaged on the frame because some idiot couldn’t be bothered to pack it correctly and the bars rubbed in transit. Maybe MBR should take into account the state the bikes arrive in for the average customer before they give a 10 out of 10 rating
Sorry to hear that your bike was damaged. Buying online is not without its pitfalls, as it is whether you're buying a bike or any other product. As consumers we should all be aware of that by now. The key point is how efficiently your issue is dealt with by the brand. That's not something we can really evaluate. But fingers crossed you get your bike sorted soon.
I chose a bad time to want a new bike
I should have bought this rather than the Capra!
I think id rarther spend the extra money and buy from a local shop. Theres as many negative reviews about canyon and the spectral as there is positive. Doesn't seem worth the stress of getting a Russian roulette bike, especially if there customer support is awful.
Ok so looking for a new bike! Is this the one?
I have the 2018 Spectral Al and I love it. Everyone who tries it at the bike park are very impressed with it and a few of them have since bought the Spectral also. Its stable at speed and very playful and responsive when you want it to be.
I also have the 2018 one and it's definitely the best bike I've ever ridden, very playful when you want it to be, but also is not nervous at all in high speeds and the 2019 one even has longer travel and better suspension components! Go for it!!
Where are the rest of the competitors? You guys missed a bunch of excellent bikes. This isn’t really the Best Trail Bike of 2019, it’s more like the best trail bike among 5 we could get our hands on.
We'd love to test all the bikes on sale but it's simply not possible in the time frame. Also it depends on availability of test bikes, whether certain brands want their bikes tested and whether there's a model that hits our price point.
Mountain Bike Rider I get it guys, but 5? If that’s all the test is gonna compare then you can’t call it “The Best Trail Bike of 2019.” For that you need a much more representative sample. And if there is a price restriction that needs to be in the title too. I understand that there are limitations and subjectivity in all reviews. All I’m asking for as a consumer is transparency and honesty about those limitations and subjectivity.
The price restriction is explained thoroughly in the written review, although we may not have mentioned it in the video. If you ignore the division by wheel size, it's essentially a 10 bike test of trail bikes from £2,200 to £3.400 with a mix of wheel sizes and one outright winner.
Mountain Bike Rider LOL. OK. But why not put it in the vid title too? And still can’t call it Best Trail Bike of 2019 though without the likes of: Santa Cruz, Ibis, YT, Cannondale, Specialized, Yeti, Pivot, Rocky Mountain, Scott, Evil and probably a few others I’m forgetting. I can demo most of these from my LBS for $50 a day, don’t need the companies to give ‘em to me. I think you guys can afford $500-$600 to put a few more bikes in this and truly make it “Best of.” Just saying. Ride on. 🤙🤘🚵🏼♂️
DONT FORGET THE 2019 SPECTRAL HAS A 36 FORK AND 2018 HAS 34, I HAVE A 2018 6.0, I AM AN INTERMEDIATE RIDER AND I LEFT IT STOCK INCLUDING THE REAR REKON EXCEPT FOR OURY GRIPS
How much does the size large weigh?
Bike of the year and now they don’t even offer it in this configuration
That’s last year’s video/test
Is this sponsored by canyon?
No, they won the test fair and square. When you award a bike a test win like this, you tend to be quite positive because you think it's pretty good.
Trail bikes get shorter and shorter travel and you give a win to very modern travel one, but for an enduro. Boggling
Don’t buy canyon! It’s always a gamble with your hard earned cash. I received an irreparably damaged carbon bike because that hadn’t packaged it correctly! They couldn’t replace it and only offered me £100 in compensation which is a disgrace .
I wasted months buying from canyon and ended up with no bike from it.
Now if Canyon could only fulfill orders!!
cisko213 mine was filled pretty quick
Mine shipped in one day and delivered in 4
Its a full enduro NOT just a simple trail bike!!!!
Please give me one mountain bike gift bro
these british channels are obsessed with price. i watch these things to learn which bike is the fastest and best built
Am Strad apologies for making a video that tries to be useful to anyone looking to purchase a new trail bike. But, we do have a video with timed runs on 6 of the latest 29er Enduro bikes coming soon.
Because if you’re going to buy a bike the price is a huge part of what you’re going to buy.
Not everyone has unlimited money.
Throwing a load of money around to get an expensive bike dosn't automatically mean you are getting a good bike just means you spent allot of money.
Best bike means best bike. Cheapest bike means cheapest bike. In the middle means neither.
More eMTB stuff
We x-rayed all of the bikes at the start of the test and none of them had hidden motors.
No.
That's an Enduro bike, what a waste of time
Starsky 83 says who?, Why do you think it is an Enduro?
Not by modern standards. Look at the Strive.
