  • After having this press for a few days, I am going to show you the operation of this press and my initial thoughts. So far I am very happy with it. I have had a few minor issues. This press will require a little tinkering and adjusting to make it run right.

    This press works great with .223 and 300 Blackout rounds, especially with pre-prepped cases that are already trimmed and primed. Start station 1 with powder charging, and leaving station 2 open for placing a bullet while the shell plate is on the up stroke.

    Thx 243 Outdoors! I think the RCBS bullet feeder will better suit this press. Its hit an miss with that bullet feeder and I dislike that itll drop a bullet without a case. I also replace that detent spring to a lower tention in the carrier in both the pro 1000 and this press. Its to strong and its whats causing the powder to pop out

      Elvis Ammo used the die from a Mr. Bullet feeder in a video. It looks superior to the Hornady & RCBS bullet feeding dies.

      What's crazy is last night after i filmed the video i hooked it up and it ran about 75 rounds perfecly. I was only putting in 15 rounds at a time and refilling when it got down to 5. Then all of a sudden is was spitting out bullets left and right. Nothing changed. Just had a mind of it own.

    As far as the inverted cases in the case feeder, I've had great luck with this fix. A.22LR casing will fit perfectly in the small center hole of the collator. Take a penny and drill a hole in the center of it so the 22 case will fit in it but will be held in place by the rim. Once done, place that in the collator and it will decrease your inverted cases by over 90%.

    Don't use an adjustable charge bar on a progressive. With certain powders and smell pistol charges, the cavity will not fill completely and you'll have inconsistent charge weights. I only use those on my classic turret because as it bounces around the stations, it packs the cavity full flawlessly.

  • @woc3785
    @woc3785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Never had good results with the adjustable charge bar for small charges for pistol, and others have reported the same. I've had really good luck with the bullet feeder on my 1000 as long as the bullet base is smooth, if not smooth base it's better to only load the tube about half way up so there's less weight on the bottom bullet. As others have said, the case collator can be improved, the latest and best is a disc that hovers above the holes to prevent cases going straight in, see the video by NotAnExpert. Regarding the roller handle, can't you rotate it back one tooth, you can change the starting angle on the 1000.

    I don't really think of this as a true progressive press. It's more like a Turret +. The juggling with the primer really downgrades it, but if the bullet feeder made up for that, maybe it would be a progressive ish. I've got a couple comparison videos in the works at the moment. Was trying to get them up last saturday, but I was just too slow.

    • @243Outdoors
      @243Outdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The priming system is the real downfall with it. I do still call it a progressive because it produces a round every pull, but other actions are required.

      @@243Outdoors With all the patents and potential litigation, this is probably the best LEE can do without sacrificing reliability. All progressives need a little tinkering to get tuned and running smooth. Especially when changing calibers. All in all not to bad. The priming system would drive me nuts. Okay. Good review, all things about Lee equipment aside. Value, Lee is a company that offers Value to the reloader. all their products are made with that in mind. So now that is out of the way. Process. There are ways to increase your output of finished product by doing your procedure in steps with the Lee equipment. The first thing to consider is size and de-prime all your brass on a single stage or set the Lee progressive up to do it. (If you wet tumble this works awesome, I would suggest that you start wet tumbling your brass) then as a separate process set up a bowl of cleaned brass and use a bench mounted auto primer unit, the lee will work fine, however, the RCBS is a much nicer unit to work with but a spendy unit if bought new. So with all your brass Clean, resized and primed start the process of progressively feeding them through the press. As far as the final lock up and the "Powder slinging" going on, It seems that there is too much-stored energy on that mechanism, the use of reduced power springs may be the answer other than the O-ring trick. one thing you didn't explain was, Is the powder slinging out as the plate rotates, or in the powder being thrown out and up as the detent snaps into its lock? , there isn't much you can do about powder slinging out because of the momentum of the case going to its next station Other than Slow down. However, I would try using weaker springs to avoid any sudden "Snap" as the shell plate locks in place. I believe that UJ did a similar fix on a Dillon press he has. anyway, I would abandon the bullet feeder. People more than not have problems with the Lee mechanism working 100%. So NO Lee bashing here. Lee offers quality and Value to the reloaders of the world. we need them to keep doing so, in doing so other companies keep control of pushing their prices through the roof as the only gig in town. I used a Lee Pro 1.000 when I was still starting out, that press taught me a lot about what could go wrong usually will and to watch those steps on any progressive press regardless of Make and Cost. Richard Lee has come up with Tools and reloading equipment that many others copied in their design. and may I add, A majority of reloaders has started with Lee equipment, So keep going Lee!! this was a good unbiased review buddy. Dave.

    • @243Outdoors
      @243Outdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the Lee stuff, because that's mostly what i have. As far as the powder spilling the shell plate speed is controlled by the handle running the index rod. The problem is the sudden snap of the ball detent. Eagle Eye changed out his spring and it helped. The O ring trick is to give a little resistance to the shell plate. A proper sized O ring should help. I ran 100 rounds tonight and had no issues. I am getting use to the press, and am really liking it.

    • @hawkeyeted
      @hawkeyeted 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have this press and it runs pistol ammo no problem. I also run 223 in it, but I pull the indexing rod out and manually index the shellplate. If I don't, the shellplate starts to move before the bullet tip has cleared the seating die.
      I've never reloaded 243, but it's OAL is only about a quarter-inch shorter than 223. I suspect you'd have to do the same as I did with 223.

    Thanks for the video. Its my impression that except for the Dillon, all the progressives require a fair amount of fiddling. The autodrum powder measure is a pretty good upgrade for this package as long as you dont use the finest powders. Its a little more accurate than the charge bar option IMO.

    • @243Outdoors
      @243Outdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't know which powder measure to get. More people recommend the auto disc for running finer pistol powders. So far it seems pretty good. I didn't like it when the case kept crashing into the side of the expanding die, but i got it all figured out "for now."

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The charge bar is a nice upgrade over the fixed disks for sure. On the handle interference, you may be able to lower the handle a little in the clamp and since the handle is bent out you may get more clearance. That worked for me on the turret version where it hit the primer feeder. That was a great idea to run cases into the dies to align the upper frame, Good job!

    For 9mm brass to go down the collator tube better. Drill a hole dead center in a penny the size of a empty 22 case. Put the penny in center of collator pushing the spent 22 case into the hole in the center. It makes the 4 holes smaller and you will have fewer upside down cases.

    Nice review !
    Lee called this the fastest single stage press on the market. I am not sure they consider this a progressive press or not. I see it as a progressive turret along the lines of a Dillon 550. Both of these have manual user inputs to work.
    On the BRP you manually set a case, set a primer, and set a bullet.
    On the 550 you manually set a case, set a bullet, and index the shell plate.
    I have watched a few videos on this press. The turret press user in my likes it in its basic form out of the box. I can set a primer and set a case at the top of the stroke so easy enough. Place the bullet on the down stroke when I set the primer. I would want an inspection mirror to verify powder.
    I find the Lee AutoDrum measure to be the Bees Knees over the Lee AutoDisk. Some powders work better in the Lee AutoDisk like they do in a Dillon. I have not had issue.

    • @243Outdoors
      @243Outdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1
