Dave quick question,I'm new to this, I saw in a few other videos that one should coat it with butter or oil coconut oil inside and out and then use the yerba mate to seal the pores. Is this correct? Or just an unnecessary extra step. I have 2 sets of carob gourds coming in the mail, thank you,John...

Would one need to re-cure the gourd over time? If so, how often? Just ordered myself a kit with a gourd, spring bombilla, and some Rosamonte. Never tried Yerba mate before so I hope I love it! Though I do love EVERY form of tea and coffee, so I'm sure I will enjoy something like this.

Excellent video! What I learned from my mom and grandma is, instead of using a new yerba, we just drink it first in an old pot, and then, move it to the new one. If you don't have a previous pot/gore, you could use a normal cup :-). My two cents!

    Hi,
    Can I add a tip?
We usually cure the mate with old yerba. So when you have a new mate, you still drink with your old one, and when you finish you put the yerba in the new mate, and you change that yerba every time you drink more mate (usually we drink like 4 times a day, and we don't fill it to the top, so the old yerba occupies half of the new mate, and you can fill it twice a day).
Some people put at hot coal at the beginning to seal it better, and even you can put sugar to caramelize it, or orange's peel, wherever you wanted to test like that later.

hey man. I was born in Buenos Aires, my family moved to Montreal Quebec, Canada when I was 5. I remember drinking mate when I was a kid. 50 yrs later, I went back to Buenos Aires, to visit family (don't ask why it took so long),... but it was a wonderful visit.. came back with a mate (gourd), jerbe (Rosemonte)... and my bombija... I am ready to use it. Thanks for the tutorial! I hope to join the circle of drink group for a sip.

    • @Circleofdrink
      @Circleofdrink  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yup, that's perfectly fine for drinking mate. The traditional gourd is only one way to drink it. Many new mate drinkers (Materos) appreciate the novelty of the ancient methods, which is great. But at the end of the day, drinking mate in any form is better than nothing :)

I bought a tiny black calabash on Monday, and I used it right away, before curing it. I cured it the following day. I had a question about drying... I haven't been drying my gourd, because I basically use it every day. Once I am done - early or late evening, I just let my used leaves sit in there with the bombilla. I rinse it out the next day and start over. Am I risking mold or anything like that? The inside seems fragile and soft.

Hello Dave. I've recently bought a calabash from Argentina, but in the curing process (I waited for 24 hours) I noticed the calabash is leaking from the bottom (the stem part). When I scraped the interior of the gourd with a small spoon, I swear I didn't even touch the stem. Now I'm waiting for the calabash to dry itself. My question is: should I be worried about that leak or after it dries I won't be having any of these problems? If the leak persists what is the proper solution in order to save my gourd?

Since Yerba mate is an 'acquired' taste of which I am only in the mood sometimes, I started drinking black tea from my gourd since that is a beverage I consume daily. I hope this will have the same long term curing effect as using Yerba regularly.

I recently bought a mate kit online (gourd w/ metal rim fyi). I cured it last night and I let it sit overnight for 12 hours. However, when I woke up, my gourd was dripping a little bit. Some water seems to be coming out by some way. What can I do?

Caleb the Yerba gives a batter flavor in the mate, so when you drink it later it doesn’t have any unpleasant flavors that may be in the wood. It’s best to just go for it and buy a cheep Yerba and do it right!

I've heard people suggest rinsing the inside of the wooden mate with vodka (or any high alcohol content liquid) and setting it on fire to get rid of mold. Is this ok for calabash mates also?

That's a wooden mate, not a wooden gourd. You are confusing translation. A gourd is a vegetable. 'Mate' refers to the container, which can be made from a gourd (calabash), wood, glass, or even plastic these days.

Sounds so weird when you pronounce the Y like uruguayos/argentinians, but the E part like a 'merican..."Schurba"

Mate is magical... nice! Good video, but really you need to practice how to say Yerba ;) and the Mate Calabaza, i wouldnt wash it first. I'm from Argentina, I cure mates all the time, but there are so many ways

Well said man, just a couple of comments though, I don't cure the gourds like you do but who cares...there are many ways. Yet we must talk about your pronounciation of "yerba". Most South Americans pronounce incorrectly, yes incorrectly (sort of UK vs US), so Argentinians say "sheeeerba" instead of "yerba" (correct Spanish). Now that leads you to say "sherba", knowingly or not mind you you are deforming the Spanish and the Argentinian Spanish in one go. Yerba means grass in Spanish, no more no less and it's pronounced "yeahrba". Perhaps you already knew! Thanks for your vids.

The video was informative, but the pronunciation of some of the words were horrific.
