Basically yeah. OCG was previously allowed to use TCG cards in official tournaments, meaning the card back rule was just an excuse to control the market better on TCG side.

Did this rule change? Other language cards were explicitly allowed with an official translation when I wen to YCS a few years ago, and specifically clear sleeves were forbidden. Now you’re telling me clear sleeves are allowed too?
Other languages of TCG cards are allowed, so that's like French, German, etc

Also, on top of the fact that Konami says "No" to OCG cards in TCG. I've noticed personally that the OCG cards actually "feel" different. They feel better printed, slightly heavier, and just overall seem higher quality. Only way to tell for sure is put them on an atomic scale or something. Also, if you think about it. It would really mess with the sales of cards, be it packs or singles. Since the OCG is ahead of us, a lot of times their cards have already dropped in price by the time we even get them out here. So you could buy a whole deck of something much cheaper in OCG land than you could in TCG land. That would cut into Konami's TCG sales and our own local stores sales and in the end, not be good for the market.

@@MercenaryLocusGaming This entire disconnect between OCG and TCG releases is ridiculous. The fact we have to wait 3 months for meta defining cards. The fact that the OCG constantly gets new cards, and we have to wait for some guys in Konami USA to decide to import them. The fact that while Japan gets officially published rulings on new cards, we have to wait for some Judge at some premier event to make a ruling (which can be wrong). It's a total mess.
The way I see it: if you're using sleeves with flat backs on them, then you should be allowed to use OCG prints as long as those cards have been printed before in the TCG.
It really wouldn't be that hard to enforce. When your only defense is "thats just the rules", that's an appeal to authority and is a logical fallacy. The rule could always be changed if there's enough outcry from the player base. If you're playing this game competitively, you're already gonna be pretty well-informed on what cards are and are not legal in the TCG. If you're worried about costs, either the TCG prices will lower or the OCG prices will raise. Like, the resale market will resolve itself one way or another.
Besides, enough players would still buy packs to try and pull the card they want for less money. That's just Gambling 101, and aside from that, pulling from packs is just incredibly satisfying in its own right.
Maybe nobody wants to check what sleeves you have and banning OCG releases is just easier.
Konami also makes more money if you have to buy the card twice. It's a stupid rule but I don't know if it really matters that much to most people

I personallc think konami should stop making a split between OCG and TCG. I mean there cant really be a world championship if people are plit between OCG and TCG.

@@My1xT The world championship is not a TCG event. It's a world event. Also, the formats are merged. Any card banned in the OCG or TCG is banned, and any cards unreleased in either territory is also disallowed from use.

To throw my hat in the ring for speculation, I think one possible aspect is that OCG and TCG are technically two different games. It's not like Magic where where all cards and sets are identical between regions. In Yugioh, cards can have slightly different effects between TCG and OCG and certain cards exist in one but not the other.
By using an OCG card in a TCG event (or vice versa), you're not just using an alternate language version of that card. You're effectively using a card from another game (albeit one with near-identical rules) as a proxy, something you're not allowed to do in tournaments.
OCG events have apparently allowed TCG cards around 10 years ago. I can't find official proof but there are a lot of forum posts from that time that say it

One thing a card shop owner told me was that the card material used for the OCG was different than the material used by Upper Deck back when they printed the cards for outside of Asia. That was his theory as to why the rules were made; to prevent players from feeling the top card of their deck and telling if it’s a certain card or not based on the stiffness. It made sense at the time, but IDK what differences (if any) between materials currently used.
Still, the official rule is the rule so no point in endlessly theorizing or complaining.
I bought an OCG Borrelsword thinking I was so smart because you can use foreign cards but after a little research learned that I couldn't use it. If everyone could use OCG cards there would be absolutely no reason to purchase TCG. The OCG market would be flooded from all over the world and players would have had access to the cards months before TCG release

If they’d release everything worldwide at the same time and not change rarities between countries (no short prints either) then they could easily not have to worry about that

@@CoordinatorKYamato I knew you could use foreign language cards, I have used a German Genex Ally Birdman in the past, but I did not know that it had to be TCG. I checked the ruling later to double check and the seller was nice enough to let me cancel the order although a Japanese Borrelsword wouldn't have been the worst buy.
@@femmefuntime that would be nice but imagine having to control a world wide game from one country? It would be insane trying to stay on top of dozens of languages and copyright laws as well as trying to organize events, train personnel, and then deal with distribution. The system they have isn't so bad but each Konami district needs time to do all of this after the OCG gets the first priority. They tried this with upper deck in the past but it was a train wreck so at least now we have Konami TCG to bless us with cards like burning abyss and dangers
My partner and I went to a pretty cool Japanese restaurant for our anniversary a few months ago.
Unlike in WS where we can have mixed decks for the mixed events because cards are the same dimension and colour ect.
I don't think you made a mistake giving your speculative analysis. Honestly, your comment openned up a conversation, and like you said gets people talking online about whether or not they should be allowed.
I understand your goal with your channel is to help players improve their competetive viability and knowledge of the tcg. Maybe having a series where you talk about yugioh card design or open those conversations up would help get people to think more critically and direct that attention from your main content.

That's circular logic. It's essentially saying something is against the rules because it's against the rules.
Well when it comes to game rules it's not about understanding why Konami made them, it's about following them. Why can you only Normal Summon once? Because it's a rule. Why can't you play Normal Spells on the opponent's turn? Because it's in the rules.
It's not up to the players to figure out why you can't use OCG cards in the TCG (even though there are a bunch of obvious reasons), it's simply the way things are

How about the language difference? If the other person doesn't speak or read Japanese, it would be hard to verify the card effects
The main reason I can think of for the rule of not using ocg cards in the Tcg, is because some cards are worded and work differently between the 2 regions. So to prevent any clash the Tcg just blanket states that they cannot be used at all.
You can play pre-errata cards though. The effect will be wrong in that case, but it is legal
Also, you have to translate most OCG cards, which just means looking up the wiki page anyway. There is no way that you can misinterpret the effect when you do that

I believe the only reason you can't use OCG cards in TCG tournaments is that this would stopped Konami from Rarity bumping cards if you could use the cheaper OCG versions. The pool ratio of OCG packs is far better than TCG along with OCG packs being much cheaper as well so this would probably kill the point of buying TCG cards basically. #Komoney

The rule was even when Upper deck was in charge when I was a judge of the game. Personally from experience in non official duels we used to have that allowed mixed OCG with TCG there was regular complaints and arguments over translations Especally with art variants. So it not just limited to card pool but we did had players in that format try stall time for translation rulings part the reason we rarely did OCG mix with TCG formats.

There's been so much change and power creep I feel like I don't understand how a modern game is played. Can you use for example german or italian cards in an english speaking country? Where i live not everyone knows english but everyone who play the game does. Not every who plays the game knows another language but i asked a judge if i could play a german pleiades and they said everyone knows what it does anyways. Did they allow it becus ppl know what it does or becus even tho its a different language its still a tcg region

You can't use OCG cards in the TCG and you can't use TCG cards in the OCG. The only TCG i'm aware allow japanese cards in the english format is MTG, but that's because they have the same pool of cards across the globe. Games from japan have the time delay.
Isn't something like Vanguard also allowing that ? I think you can't use English Vanguard cards in a japanese tournament, but the contrary might be fine.
Don't get why both can't be unified. Like instead of releasing certain cards exclusively for one or the other (TCG or OCG), just release it for everyone all at once or close together. Shit's a fucking teaser when you gotta wait months to years to see a TCG release of anything.

I hate to say this but we cannot use ocg cards in the tcg because they use the ocg to see which cards fair well in sets. Then in the tcg release they rarity bump said card and short print them in order to sell more product. If you cannot see this you must have turned a blind eye to it.

It allows them to gauge the market in the ocg and know which cards are doing well and how to handle those cards when it comes to printing them for the tcg release.

Surprised to hear about the double sleeving rule in Yugioh. I would never think of playing one of my magic decks not doubled sleeved. OK, some of those decks are worth thousands, but it seems even yugioh has deck prices that are quite high. Seems wild not to protect those expensive cards!
