Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is an Indian classical sitar player from Imdadkhani Gharana. He belongs to the seventh generation of Etawah Gharana. Shahid Parvez has performed in all major music festivals in India or abroad. Shahid Parvez also got vocal and Surbahar(sometimes called bass sitar) training from his uncle Ustad Hafeez Khan. He also received training in tabla for many years from Ustad Munnu Khan of the Delhi Gharana.
Raag Charukeshi is a very melodious Raag. This Raag is relatively new as it is adopted from Carnatic Music into Hindustani style of singing.
This Raag can be rendered without any restrictions in all the three octaves. Pancham is skipped occasionally in Aaroh as well as Avroh like G m d P or P d n d m G R. One can find shades of many Raagas in Charukeshi like: S R G m shows Nut Ang, G m d P shows Bhairav Ang, n S' R' S' d ; d n R' S' shows Darbari shade, R G m R S shows Nut-Bhairav Ang, which combined together gives this Raag a unique and independent character.
This baithak was held at the initiative of Ved Gupta as a part of bazm e Khas foundation live concerts.
The idea behind this upload is to preserve this collection of great music for all music lovers and students of Hindustani music.

Shahid bhai does not play Sitar. He becomes one with Sitar. He is SITAR. What depth he must be experiencing himself.

Excellent concert as usual, I'd suggest keeping the camera facing straight towards the stage, mostly covering the primary artist and not angled.

    Why no drone on tanpura?

It is not uncommon for sitar players for not use a drone. In fact, I have played with Sitar players who ask the drone to be played softer. The instrument itself has many sympathetic strings, the plucking of which can be used to provide the drone effect. I would speculate that it is stylistic choice. Someone like Nikhil Banerjee did not rely much on the plucking of these strings, and resorted to the melody string primarily. So a drone would be a useful. Ustad Shahid Parvez on the other hand plucks those strings almost always as we can hear. I for one prefer the drone playing for a fuller sound.

Shahidji doesn't use one as it is not needed for his style of sitar ....it is already producing drone harmonics
