I loved your statement, “I love it here it’s my home nothing fancy but it’s all I need. And I’m thank god every day for it.” That’s me about my 110 year old house I live in. It’s been in my family since 1967 and it’s in need of several repairs. But the roof is in good repair and it’s dry inside. That’s all I need. I don’t want a big house. The bigger it is, the more there is to keep clean. 😊😊

Pistol Pete was married to Georgia Mae Bingham. Folks called her “Mrs. Pete”, and she often worked at the jail. I don’t know if she ever actually served as sheriff or not. Later their son, Cecil Byrge became sheriff of Morgan County. I was quite young, so it was probably early 70’s.

Great video, JD. It reminded me also however that prohibition had to be one of the dumbest reform efforts this country has ever undertaken. (I'm not agin most.) And if people want to fight bad enough, that's what they're going to do. We tend to forget or discount what a relatively young country this is. Sometimes we're like a herd of wild teenagers. I hope we last long enough to grow up. ... TinyTown - where I retired in the central Midwest - still feuds like the Civil War border town it was. Churches had to be closed bc people turned them into shooting galleries.
Since I eventually learned to distance myself from the local mess as much as possible, I don't know if this still goes on ... but when I moved here in '05, the custom for graduating high school seniors was to gather on the lawn around the county courthouse and literally try to stomp each other to pieces. The local police chief (department of one) and the county sheriff's office (not much bigger) are located inside the building and would watch the annual rite of passage w/o lifting a finger to stop it. Some generational feuds here literally go back as far as when the town grew up around a trading post on the Lewis&Clark Trail. I don't think the Hatfields and McCoys could've been worse. Or the Meltons and Davises. Little wonder they didn't roll out the welcome wagon when I showed up. :p Nobody thought I could stick it out here, but in polite terms let's just say I've encouraged detente. Had to greet the milita boys with my shotgun too when they showed up piled onto the back of a flatbed truck parked outside my house, waving their symbolic manhood and ... well, rashly thinking they could run this old Fenian off. So I wonder if I'd have been much different if this was all I'd ever known. Sometimes I grieve for these folks, but my freeway finger has a mind of its own too.

Is jury system still exist today in american judicial system? From my point of view this was a very wrong practice. The setting up of a jurry system separate and distinct from whole judicial system is very wrong. Whatever the outcome after a case was heard it was always the jury as the final arbiter would hand down the decision. Juries were mostly lay preople, ignorance of the law were common to this group of people living in the protiers. It was but only the judge who had trained himself to make a lawful decision. Why the american society in that era invented such a system? First protection for white from minority colored people. 2nd protection even for abusive member of thier community against outsiders or visitors. 3rd protection of the strong influencial against the weak and ordinary member of the community. Those were the biases, silently institutionalized by the system, that were common to whites and the judge knew it, his presence was just a symbol of justice. Because by nature whites were brutally racist people. Thier racism brutallity were not only to the colored poeple but also to whites that did not embrace thier racist feelings and to the whites, who were an outsiders or visitors of the community because for the whites hospitality didn't mean anything but only a business. If it still existed today who are they protecting now by this system? Still thier racist feelings?

When the Boxer tripped, the Sheriff opened up a "Can Of WHOOP-ASS on the Boxer and continued to kick him while he is "LITERALLY FLOORED"(😵🤕). And then, the Sheriff pulls out his Billy Stick and proceeded to knock the boxer upside the head with it! Then the Sheriff puts him in the Back of the Cop Car and "POLITELY"Took him to Jail. 😂🤣🤣😂🤯😂👍👌
(If you could see inside my mind, you would have lost it laughing too)

Wow, what a story!! I think I would have moved out of the area.. too much self-appointed justice for me, lol. I have heard of Pistol Pete as a kid, but I don't remember from where the story originated. Definitely crazy times!!

My granddad, Jacob Leonard, was murdered in 1907 in his barnyard there in Atkins, Virginia. He was a prominent lumberman in the area and had hired young Chase Lindamood to make a road back in the woods. My dad was only three at the time, so he and his brothers were in the house eating breakfast. The story goes that an argument over 50 cents happened, and Lindamood pulled a pistol and shot Jacob in the heart. He instantly fell dead. Lindamood ran away, but then turned himself in a few hours later. A trial was help at the courthouse and Lindamood was found guilty of man slaughter and was sent to prison for fifteen years. He returned after serving his time and went to stealing chickens. Now, I don't know how much .50 cents was in today's money, but surely it wasn't worth a man's life.
I still have the newspaper clipping of that event.

This was a really interesting and good story and it really happened. To this day this still goes on between 2 different families. What's really sad is alot of the time a family will fight amongst itself. I would absolutely love to win this book. I would read it then I would let my baby brother read it. I think he would enjoy it so much. He's going to be 55 on January the 15th. I would give it to him for his birthday, so I would have to read it pretty fast if I won it and it got here on time. But I would still give it to him for a late B/D present. We lost our other brother last August. I think this would really lift my baby brothers spirits up. Don't ever stop telling these great true story. This is so much a part of our history. I'm 64 and I can really relate alot to these stories. We are from NE Oklahoma, we live about 30 miles from Talequah, Oklahoma. Cherokee Nation's head quarters. ❤

Beautiful landscapes and the immense spaces are so awesome to me living right at the end of Cornwall UK I can and I have walked from one coast to the other some of which is an old pilgrims path from Canterbury (roughly the centre of England) and when they got to the sea they would beg or buy passage to Spain continuing their pilgrimage

Hi JD! Wow, that’s a piece of history you just don’t hear about. Back in those days they had their own justice. Just because towns had a sheriff, they took it upon themselves to serve justice in their own way.
Keep telling these fascinating stories from the past. Have a blessed weekend!

16:40 looks a whole lot like Ron Ford from the Mossy Grove area of Morgan Co, Tn. I built some fence with him. Had to finish without him. He died in a car crash over the weekend and that Friday was the last I ever saw of him. He was a good fella.
