I made these tonight using just a few tablespoons of canola oil, low salt and a large onion and they still turned out wonderfully well. Thanks!

I made this today monitoring the beans carefully for fear of burning them. The caramelized onion puree adds a lot of flavor & the light olive oil made it so much more healthy. I used 1/2 cup. I am freezing what we do not consume tonight in our taco salads. I can't fathom ever buying refried beans in a can again. What a difference! Thanks for sharing!

Tried this recipe out today, & overall mostly very pleased with the results. I used avocado oil, which was all I had on hand, but that worked perfectly. My only quibble were the onions - I had only red onions instead of the sweet ones I normally use, & the final product seemed just a little ... onion heavy. Fortunately I love onions, & the beans still turned out very tasty, with the perfect texture I was looking for. Next time however, I will definitely go with the sweet onions instead. Thanks for the recipe, Robin!

Rockin Robin you are amazing I made your refried beans (the older version) and you are the only one who doesn't plop them into splattering oil I followed your methods and advice and they came out amazing on my first try! I do want to try this one also with the carmelized onions though. I heard you say your Dad tried to make the recipes a little healthier by not using lard etc. and bless his heart, and yours for this. Hope you are staying well during these uncertain times.

I'm making these again today, but in addition to frying onions, I'm going to fry two Jalapeno's and add a little fresh garlic to the puree process. I'm sure it will be amazing!

How fun for you that you were able to work with your family in your restaurant. I'm sure it was very hard to do, but when you can find a great Mexican restaurant that does Mexican right, you've got a winner. Now I need to find your absolutely best salsa recipe! Take care, my friend. :)

Hi Swede, thank you for the testimonial. Glad you are enjoying the old recipe. It is tasty as you confirm. I am always looking to improve things so I experiment! Since you are familiar with the old recipe, you can use the part where you fry corn or flour tortillas in the oil in addition to caramelizing the onion too. Your oil will be well flavored! I do that sometimes as well. Let me know what you think about this recipe compared to the old one. Thanks for watching!

Robin, thanks for bringing this recipe to my attention. It looks delicious and I am very excited to try it. The one thing that I noticed from watching your video is that you use quite a bit more olive oil than in your previous recipe which called for 1/4 cup of corn oil. Would there be any benefit in using the same oil you used to sautee your onions (for extra flavor) or no?

    • @RockinRobinCooks
      @RockinRobinCooks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Christopher, you are right, I was a little heavy handed on the oil. I was just estimating so 1/3 to 1/2 I think is better. You would definitely want to use the oil that you cook the onions in for more flavor. You could even take that oil and cook some corn tortillas in it too. Flavoring that oil is where it's at. Thanks for watching!

Hi Ja queline, you could try black beans, or great northern beans but I have not tried them personally. You can use canola oil but it is not a healthy oil but I have used it. You can also use lard. Thanks for the question!

This is how I have been making refried beans lately. Make sure to cook those onions until they start turning brown for the best flavor. Let me know how you like them!

Beans look good, just like my moms. But if you addd half olive oil and half pork lard((the bottom part of the lard with pieces of chicharrón)) they come out even better. That kind of porky taste, great on refríes beans

Swap in manteca (lard) for the oil, and your beans will taste 100x better. The best part, manteca is 100% natural.

I've always been afraid to make refried beans, I know sounds silly. It's just with that longer cook time and that I thought you had to use lard, which I never purchase I figured only way to eat them was go to Mexican restaurant or worse to eat from a can. I like your healthier version and it actually doesn't look that hard to do. Just need to be around home when cooking. Also MANY THANKS for your safety tip about water and oil-that must have been totally scary when you had your fire experience!!!

In your other video I recall you using 1/4 cup of corn oil and in this video you used a full cup. Is there a reason for that major difference or am I misremembering?

Hola Byron, thank you for your comment! I think apple juice all by itself tastes good and is healthy if you dilute it a bit with water so you dilute the sugar content. Keep that positive attitude Byron!

I do have another question to ask u.
    Ever made 'pork' green chili?
I'm from CO & there's a little Mexican restaurant there that made the best pork green chili, along with their beans & homemade tortillas😋😋😋
Since I'm no longer there😠I'm in a state where the Mexican cooking is so🤢. I have no clue what they do to the ground beef & their burritos are small...not worth the price they charge.
Anyway. Do u have a good 'pork green chili' recipe that makes ur eyes cross & gives u that full pansa feeling😋🤗

Honestly, I have no clue. There's a little Mexican restaurant in Denver Colorado & all their stuff is homemade.
I really wish I knew what they put in it because it is so good. For now, my kid's & I are in sc & the Mexican food out here is not good. The way they cook the beef & chicken is not good at all. The only thing that is 'somewhat' good is their refried beans...even then, they make it WAY too salty.
All I can say is that. I'm glad I came across ur videos/cooking. Wish u were out here selling ur food. My kid's & I would be there in a heartbeat🤗
One more thing. U have a big heart to be sharing ur families recipes. So glad I found u on here.
Blessings🙏 Keep on sharing ur delicious recipes🌹
      Kat😊

Can I ask what the purpose of all that oil is? Is it flavor? I've always just cooked and mashed them in the water they boiled in, and then maybe a 1/4 of oil ( I use bacon grease... it gives it that "umami" flavor), oh and try boiling them with a smoked ham hock. You're welcome.

Hahaha, it's not that much oil! How do I stay so fit... well, all things in moderation and I eat healthy and I most certainly read labels for what in the heck is in this! Also, making your own food is way healthier than eating out, for the most part. I hope you will check out more of my recipes! I started this channel with Mexican recipes as my parents had a Mexican restaurant that I worked in for many years. Then I moved into healthy recipes that taste great. I hope you will explore my channel and try out more recipes. If you have any questions I'm always here! Welcome to my channel!
