I recently purchased a crescent brand wrench from Walmart and noticed that they are no longer

TC-W3 oil is designed for the lower running temperatures of lake or ocean-cooled outboard 2-stroke engines. Most outboards are lucky to see 160° coolant temp most of the time - this is the reason I would never run a TC-W3 rated oil in a string trimmer, chainsaw, or any other air-cooled 2-stroke engine. This here is the best test that could've been done - if a TC-W3 oil can withstand running in a hot crankcase, then regular 2-stroke oil surely can.

On an outboard engine(unless you don't care) it pays to usethe factory recommended oil grade and mixture(if not oil injected) years ago I used to hang out/help out at a boat dealer, had a customer with a large 4 cyl) brand new outboard come back for repairs ,a relative of his had told him if he used the "miracle oil" he was hawking,at a lighter mixture("the miracle stuff was so good less was needed" ,so that's what he did, the problem was he had pretty much welded the rings to the Cyl.walls, reducing the powerhead to scrap,he was less than thrilled to learn he had also voided his warranty was told to get his " oil expert" to pay for the new powerhead, expensive lesson learned,-the engineers who design things have some idea as to what they need.

It may simply be anecdotal, but while i was out of the country for a year i left my riding mower for use by my neighbor. A few weeks before I got home he went ahead and changed the oil on it using a bottle of "SAE30" that was sitting on the shelf next to the antifreeze in the shed. He mowed the grass with it and then I returned. I noticed the oil was darker than usual and figured he hadn't changed it and decided I'd mow and then drain it hot. I made it through about half the yard, noticed the mower was getting a lot hotter than I remembered and smoking, started heading for the shed and it locked up. Pushed it to the shed and drained it and out came blackish' blue-green oil with a good deal of white metal content. When getting oil out to flush it i noticed my "SAE30" bottle was sitting with my other oil bottles. The mix oil i use for the leaf blower and chainsaw is what I keep in that bottle, which is what my neighbor happened to put in the mower. Anyway, i flushed it a few times, put the usual "regular oil" back in it and still runs, not great, but it runs. I took a strip of pink duct tape and put on that bottle and wrote 2stroke MIX oil on it to prevent that from ever happening again while gone. Of course, not 100% sure it was that mix oil that caused it, but my neighbor and I have the sort of relationship if a problem had happened with the mower while he had it , he would have just bought me a new mower. And the issue happened on the 2 stroke mix oil's watch , and that's really all i have to contribute it to. It may be one of those deals where some engines will tolerate it, some won't, quite possible this one was of the later.

Do an experement with *TURPENTINE* and/or *D-LIMONENE* (Orange Oil).
Turpentine and D-Limonene are non-polar solvents, meaning they dont mix with water, but they do mix with oil (including gas).
D-Limonene is pretty much orange oil. It is a STRONG solvent -- so strong that it is used to DEGREASE ENGINES and REMOVE GRAFFITI from stuff. It is also used as a cleaner/solvent in homes, industrial kitchens, and factories.
A strange tendency of D-Limonene is that it likes to destroy certain types of rubber, including neoprene and latex. An example of this is if you put orange peel to a balloon; it pops it. The D-Limonene in the orange peel dissolves some of the rubber, causing it to pop. (So, there is a possibility it could erode hoses and/or gaskets. It depends on the material.)
A possible side effect of putting D-Limonene in fuel could be orange scented fumes!
Also, D-Limonene is the liquid base of Mace Triple Action Pepper Spray. I sprayed some and smelled it; it smells like orange cleaner! (And capsaicin, and CN Tear Gas. The tear gas is like inhaling wasabi.)

One thing for sure, nothing beats the mechanical cleaning, especially for diesel injectors.

I ride dirt bikes and so many times we have someone in the group break their engine casing on a rock, losing some or most of the oil in the crank. Most of us carry epoxy and some (the ones riding 2-strokes) carry 2-stroke oil but almost nobody ever caries 4-stroke oil so we clean up the crankcase with gasoline and epoxy it back together and use the 2-stroke oil in the crank. This works very well and is Much better than riding with little or no oil and we have Never had any engine problems from doing this.

Wow, judging from the amount of blowby coming out of the crankcase vent port, that engine was already seriously worn to begin with. That port really should be connected to the intake to suck the oil fumes into the combustion chamber to burn them up.
I'd like to see a test of various high-temperature vegetable oils (olive, safflower, sesame, canola, peanut) to see which produces the least gunk in the crankcase. You know, in case the asteroid hits and civilization crumbles and I have to lube my generator with whatever oil I can find. I didn't list castor oil because we already know that makes a good engine oil -- lots of 2-stroke engines already use it. Also, nobody keeps a gallon jug of castor oil in their pantry...I hope.

When I was young and growing up on the farm, I used 2 stroke oil on a 4 stroke lawn mower. Seemed to be ok for the first hour and a half... However, after that hour and a half the engine lost significant power. Shortly there after the engine would seize completely. The first time I thought i broke it as I was not able to pull start thengine. But after it cooled down, I could start it again. Happened about 3 times b 4 I saw what my mistake was.

I figure two stroke oil is meant to run threw a crank case mixed with gas at a cool temperature never getting hot really compared to conventional oil that's meant to run hot so in a two stroke it's not only lubrication but cooling as well because it's not being reused and heated as much so maybe it breaks down and gets thinner under heat because it's supposed to be burned off thus maybe the extra heat makes it extra thin cuasing the extra blow by.... Just an educated guess on maybe why it did what it did.what do you think?

    • @ProjectFarm

I agree the engine is older therefore there is some blow by. The amount of visible blow by is probably a result of the 2 stroke oil is designed to be atomized with gasoline for its intended purpose instead of a motor oil that designed to be stable despite being in severe turbulence/splashing around in a crankcase.

I bought two new gokarts 6 years ago, they've had Klotz 2-stoke oil in them from day one.
They have been ridden to death, still running, and absolutely zero engine problems.

Do you think there's any difference in the super tech brand products compared to the name brand products? Is there any type of testing you could do to see if there's a quality difference?

I think the quality is similar, but not as good as the premium products. Thank you for this recommendation!

Compare the manufacturer labeling on the bottom of the so called "brand name" oil bottom vs. Super tech. You'll be surprised to see that it is the same. Sort of like Motorcraft oil vs valvoline. There's only so many manufacturers....just the labeling determines where it goes and what certain makeup of additives is put in the oil. All oils and fluids have to meet a certain amount of criteria and any oil or fluid on a shelf has to meet it. Yes brand a may be better than super tech in some ways. But super tech will meet the requirements...as will any oil if it has the API certification label on it.

Most ST oils are made by Warren Distribution. The conventional oil is API SN, and the full syn is Dexos1/GM certified. Their flagship brand is MAG1, along with a few other brands, but they primarily make private label oils like Supertech. I ran the conventional in my mower with zero issues, used the full syn in one of our vehicles with zero issues, and run the 2cycle in my outboard, again zero issues. So far so good.

I grew up in a cycle shop, 60s and 70s. Our competitor across town used pioneer chain saw 2 cycle oil in all their bikes. New and used. Ordinarily, that might now sound like much, but their bikes were all 4 cycle engines. I always figured it was because they got it at a great price. I do know they never had any oil related problems.

I recently bought some non-ethanol gas for my boat outboard, and also a one-gallon container to use in the lawn mower. By mistake, I added some two-stroke oil into this gas also. . Later when I looked in the lawn mower, the gas was bluish and I realized what I'd done. I thought it might smoke or gum up/damage engine, but to my surprise it ran better! Quieter with a bit more power. That was of course with the normal fill of 30wt. in the 4-stroke mower..

Compressor oil is actually just very refined motor oil so they are pretty much interchangeable. Compressor oil has no distillates or silica to prevent problems with spray painting but that's about the only difference. If you are never going to paint and only use air tools you can run motor oil in your compressor.

We used to use Amsoil synthetic 2 stroke oil in Honda GX160 5.5hp kart race engines. These retimed and race prepped would rev 6000rpm. I changed the oil after every race day. I have never had any kind of problems using this or other brands of synthetic 4 stroke oil.
