The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

In my ear she had a timbre similar to that of Sarah Vaughan, and, like her, she was one of the great female voices of jazz although she did not reach the heights of success and popularity of The Divine...

I can’t say that I hear much similarity to Sarah Vaughan. Gloria Lynne’s gospel background was more present in her vocal presentation than what one hears in Sarah, although Sarah did get her start singing in the Baptist church. What I have long felt however is that Gloria Lynne, who had a marvelous voice with a wide range and great control, was never paired with the right musical arranger. Unfortunately, none of her recordings made much of an impact on the charts aside from “I Wish You Love”. When one listens to her albums however, one can hear a magnificent singer searching for the right material, or at the very least, the right arrangement. Ultimately, I think she was a fine singer who unfortunately never got her big break.

My parents loved Gloria Lynne, and by extension so do I. For a large part of my childhood my father would listen to her sing "It's Just A Matter of Time" every day. An amazing singer with a very distinctive, soul-tinged style. One of my all-time favorites.

gloria took Herbie Hancock's instrumental Watermelon Mann , added lyrics , and made a GREAT version in the mid 60's . She even get writing credits on the vocal version. Check it out sometime., it's brilliant
