It is critical that you use motorcycle specific oil of the weight specified in the owners manual. You can’t put car oil in motorcycles that use the same oil to lubricate the transmission and the crankshaft and top end.
The reason is, to get more miles per gallon, as requested by the federal government, oil companies removed zinc and phosphorus almost completely from oils used in cars. Zinc and phosphorus are what make oil stand up to Shear. Here is when two surfaces such as gears meshing come together under load..Zinc and phosphorus give oil higher film strength, resistance to sheer. But they reduced the amount of that oil in car oil. That happened in 1989. That’s when oil‘s such as 0W 20 started showing up, One of the motorcycle magazines that report about this change to oils to get more miles per gallon out of our cars in 1989. They actually said, there will be catastrophic motorcycle transmission failures because of the change to car oil’s.
One of the motorcycle magazines that report about this change to oil‘s to get more miles per gallon out of our cars in 1989. They actually said, there will be catastrophic motorcycle transmission failures because of the change to car oil’s.
luckily, they did not illuminate zinc and phosphorus from the additives package of motorcycle specific oil.
You can actually feel when the oil in your motorcycle is worn out. Even if it has as little as 1500 miles on it. You can tell because it becomes difficult to find neutral when you are stopped. And it becomes difficult to shift up through the gears and you start missing shifts for no good reason. That’s when you know your oil is shot no matter how few miles you have on it,
when changing your oil. Take your bike out for a 15 minute ride to warm the oil. Do you want to stir up all of the grits, gum, salt, acid, metal particles, and corrosion that gravitate to the bottom of your bikes engine and sit there until the engine is warmed up again, at which point, all of this crap gets suspended in the oil again. Detergent oils keep this crap suspended in the oil so that it can be flushed out of the engine during an oil change. letting the bike idle for five or 10 minutes does not get the oil hot and get all of that crap suspended into the oil so it can be flushed out. Some motorcycle engine oil depending on the bike and the temperature can take as long as an hour for that oil to reach normal operating temperature. Also, letting your bike idle especially an air cold bike, sitting there running without airflow , can overheat the exhaust valve, and the exhaust pipe, turning it blue on some bikes because the idle mixture’s are so lean. So take the bike out for a ride to get the oil warm. When I do an oil change. I do it when I come home from a ride, I pull the drain plug, and I let the oil drain overnight. I have a little sign that I stick my ignition key through and plug it into the ignition in the garage that says “no oil quote, to remind me not to start the bike until I put the drain plug back in and fill the oil.. you would be amazed at how much oil drips out overnight. I always wondered how much more oil would drain out overnight so I put the cap from a can of spray paint under my machine when the oil was done flowing out, and I left that Under the engine overnight. When I put the cap under there it was dripping about one drip every 15 seconds. I thought it was done dripping. boy was I wrong. That Which held about 4 ounces, was overflowing and I had a big puddle on my garage floor.
when changing your own oil, you won’t get this in the shop. Fill the oil filter with clean oil and then put it on the machine. That way your engine isn’t running dry until the oil filter fills up with oil. Even if your filter is mounted horizontally, you can still put about four or 6 ounces of oil into an oil filter. keep moving the oil filter around then put some oil in, then move the filter around just to saturate the paper inside the filter. This will reduce the time your engine starved for oil when you restart it.
One more tip I learned from the Internet. Never use a Fram filter. Use a HIFLO or an OEM. I worked for a Suzuki Kawasaki Honda dealership years ago. People were putting aftermarket oil filters on their Honda Gold wing‘s that were chromed. They were Chinese crap filters. People who had these filters on their gold wings, and the engines failed due to oil flow problems caused by these filters, Honda would not honor the warranty even though these bikes were under #Warranty. It specifically says in the owners manual, use of non-OEM filters could lead to rejection of any warranty claim. And that did happen. that was big news in the motorcycle shops probably across the country at that time..
use the exact oil and weight specified in your owners manual. If you want to see something surprising, as you drain your oil, run it over a magnet. It is scary the amount of metal that comes out of your engine. And that’s only the magnetic part. The aluminum bits are not magnetic..I did that on my Kawasaki KLR. 650 once.. The shrapnel that came out of that drain plug had me scared. Some chunks that came out in that oil looked like parts of the piston, I got shavings that look like they were part of clutch springs, I got thousands of tiny tiny shiny flakes that look like very fine metallic that you see in paint. And all of that crap is stuff that my oil filter didn’t catch. I wonder how much was in the filter element. That was the first oil change on that bike. I imagine a lot of assembly crap during the process of assembling the engine was in there,I think they do that with propeller airplane engines to analyze ware of things like bearings..Somehow they can tell the condition of the internals of an airplane engine by what’s in the oil they drain out of it

I know it's been ages, but your video is still helpful, and will continue to be as long as there are TUXs out there. For me, which barely knew what a socket was, you've explained it really well. And, the manual doesn't tell you what size are the sockets. At least I couldn't find it. Also, another video mentioned different sized sockets. My mechanic confirmed it's a 17mm for the drain plug and a 10mm for the filter cap bolts. I got surprised by the spring that comes out after you remove the filter cap. The manual mentions it briefly. It's a shame you don't own a Tux anymore, because more videos would be awesome. I am a commuter :) and with the bike being so affordable, it's not so affordable to take it to the mechanic every 3 months because you don't know how to do basic maintenance on it. Changing the oil and filter is a great start, with such a small oil pump/container. Thank you again, happy riding!

I'm guessing some people pull that rear seat off to make room for a rack, or to do a cafe racer mod. The front seat will probably be harder to find. Might want to post on the TU250X forum to see if someone happens to have one sitting around after replacing it with an aftermarket seat.

Just did my first oil change on the 2015 tux, today. I ran into a one issue during the change. Ready for this? As I was removing the last of the 3 nuts from the oil filter cover, the nut popped loose from my fingers and shot right into the fill cap hole!!!! I was like, wtf did I just do??? After trying to fish it out with a magnetic tool, I then had to remove the entire cover (not sure what you call that), to get it out of there. But in the end, it all turned out well. Thinking next time I'll have to put that filter cap back on once its been drained from below before I change the filter! :) Thanks for putting this video out here!

But i had one of the last got it last November ,the Euro cull hit them January 2017 so not making anymore. Would have bought a new T.u. but not had them in the U.k. probably 5 years or more.
