Nahh, I dont think most of us have the mindset, after loosing loved ones to sudden death, especially murder, to decide how much emotion or not to display. Even during interrigation. He comes across as very unaffected. Doesnt mean someone has guilty knowledge. But far out he's lost his mother, his little bro and his dad.
What a terrible unimaginable situation this is for this young man. I cannot imagine what he has been through. He is obviously an intelligent person, and he handles this better than most. I wouldn’t dare try to judge anything about any of his responses. Bless his heart.
It absolutely breaks my heart. I am literally in tears listening to this what a selfish, horrible man his father is, he took everything and everyone from this young man - his first born son. What a monster.
He is a self serving Murdaugh and definitely not an innocent in life. But I don't believe he had anything to do with the deaths of his mother and brother.
What a betrayal of the father to his living son. To let him carry the weight of losing his mother, brother and his father to prison as the murderer. I feel for the kid.
Bingo. This is what I’ve been saying! People think he was super close with them all still and I’m not seeing that. He was 25 when the murders happened. Paul was 22. But there was a big difference between them… Paul was much, much closer with the family still. He wasn’t ambitious, had no real plans for his life beyond caring for Moselle. And he had a huge problem with alcoholism that had resulted in him accidentally killed a girl while drunk when he was 19, and even then he didn’t stop drinking, he was never gonna stop and Alex would’ve seen Paul as a failure. He was 22 and despite having Dad pay for his own apartment, it’s obvious Paul was like a teenager at home still. Whereas Buster got out of Hampton as soon as he graduated HS and had been living several hours away from his family for 8 years by the time of the murders. I agree that there’s a reason Buster got outta there. And I also don’t think he saw nearly as much of his dad’s scary side, as Paul and Maggie would’ve seen in those last 2 years before Alex killed them. Sure they’d meet up for social events but Buster wasn’t there with them at night when it was just the family… I truly don’t believe he knew just how bad things had been between his Mom and Dad. I don’t think anyone really knew. Maggie was completely isolated, no best friend, no one to confide in but her sister whom she was also competing with, trying to prove she had the better marriage. So she had no one to turn to when things with Alex got really bad. No one could speak up for her and say what was really happening between her and Alex when their friends weren’t there. Except maybe Paul but he was killed too. Just makes me sad that Maggie had no one.
I allowed the gossip and media to form my opinion of this kiddo early on, but thankfully I watched and read and formed my own opinion after time went by. This is a solid kid, terrible situation, lost his entire family, and is still here to pick up the pieces and make something decent of the rest of his life alone. He's a good kid. Praying for him. I think he will be ok though. I'm ashamed for judging so early on. Hoping for the best
It’s funny how ppl attacked him and nitpicked everything he did. Said he was having a homosexual affair, murdered a kid.. ppl are disgusting, this was right after he was thrown into the spotlight when his brother and mom were slaughtered . Doing your own research from multiple sources and forming your own opinion is the only way it should be.. don’t put titles on ppl unless it’s proven.
You aren't the only one who judged him too early. A lot of people did, including me. We have a tendency to believe what we hear in the media and then there was the documentary. I finally took a step back when Stephen Smiths family spoke out publicly and said they did not believe for a second that Buster had anything to do with Stephen's death. I too felt ashamed of myself.
Wow, he kept his composure. It could be years later and I wouldn’t be able to get through a sentence without crying. Its been 14 yrs since my nephew was murdered and I still cry whenever I think or talk about it.

@@notlana983 There is absolutely nothing tying Buster to Stephen Smith, as far as we know from evidence, this young man is a victim of his father who killed his mother and brother. Have a heart
To those talking about him not crying or being emotional. I have a feeling he saw straight through his father for years and the family put up a certain facade in photos/presented to the outside world - it does not mean in the very least that they were truly close/emotionally intertwined just bc they have photos together that give an appearance that they are. He probably thought Paul was a twerp and as for not weeping over his mother in the interview - A) he is Alex’s son, so emotionally, he’s likely somewhat stunted like his father, B) those boys were allowed to run wild from a very early age/didn’t have to rely on either parent for much at all, so I’m guessing there was a lack of bond with Maggie. He’s also grown up in a family of lawyers, he knows how to conduct himself in this setting, regardless of how he might be feeling emotionally.
It could also just be a form of shock as well. His system is just struggling to process what happened or it has processed the event and just doesn’t know what to do. In a numb state of mind. He’s just kinda there and not at the same time
He's never waivered on supporting his dad and claiming there is a killer(s) out there that are NOT his dad. Saying this kid, his son, "saw through him for years" is pure projection. It's a lotttttt more complicated than we may ever know.
I'm curious if he was raised to surpress his emotions in public because the family had an image to maintain around town. Maybe he was just numb and in shock but he is a bit odd. The angle is killing me though!
This guy was raised by attorneys, usually attorneys are great at being emotionless regardless of how traumatic a situation is. He was a law student as well
He was raised in the South. Men are supposed to be MEN!!! Not squall and bawl about everything. They are supposed to be strong Leaders. He wept silently several times, hence wiping his face and eyes so much. He is an adult and is supposed to behave like one. Which he did. Plus he was still in shock!! Who wouldn’t be??? How do you all think he was supposed to behave?? Pound the windows with the his fists, kick the dash with his feet?? Be as high as a kite on drugs because he has no coping skills?? Call the people asking the questions Mother effers, if he had to answer a question he didn’t like?? Could you explain what you mean and how you see him being emotional? I'm from the northeast and I believe you but it seems very coded. I noticed a few sniffs and wipes of his eyes but honestly wasn't sure if it was allergies. Thank you.
A lot of people say they feel bad for Buster, but I think he knows things. What happened to Stephen Smith? What happened to the housekeeper? Maybe Buster didn't actually commit any crimes himself, but he could give the victims' families some closer. There are still too many unanswered questions.
I truly don't believe he did or knows firsthand what happened to SS. I'm sure he "knows" from hearing the inside gossip in Hampton, but I highly doubt he has any clue otherwise. Regarding GS, I'm sure Paul told him what he thinks could've taken place, but Buster had been away at college for a long time, and I doubt his family had many conversations about her when he would talk to his mom several times a day.
I agree with you. He's a little too calm...I mean - come on...when you consider what just happened? I believe he knows about Stephen Smith, at least. The way he keeps on "yes SIR" is sycophantic...it's exactly how his Dad acts with authorities...innocent people aren't so careful to cowtow to cops.
I don't understand why so many people are determined to believe Buster had something to do with Stephen Smith's death. What evidence is there to lead to that belief?

I really think of all these family members, Buster is respectful, grounded, sensical and a bit spoiled if I’m being honest. He just has gotten such a raw deal in this whole thing and is more mature about it than most of us could be. Way more than his Daddy. 😳 Wow.
Yet he remained almost emotionless. He clearly had some kind of eye issue - an allergy or a scratch or something - but I could not even begin to sit in that spot to talk about my mom and brother being massacred.
@@Duchess8705I guarantee it was his lawyers request to have the interview in the car at his uncle’s house. If it were anyone else, they’d be at SLED HQ.
Buster chose to have it in the car because he rather not go to the station. They only give the option to certain ppl as it’s allowed but not preferred bc it gives the integrator a disadvantage and the suspect an advantage being in an relaxed environment.
This is so strange. He clearly does not want to be there. Gives very short answers, as short as possible. No eye contact whatsoever, zero emotion and he didn't ask one single question!! Three days after half his family is violently murdered!!!!!!!!! Man.

Buster was raised by a lawyer, in a family of lawyers...and family secrets. He had studied to become a lawyer himself. He is also represented by a lawyer here. He was no doubt coached prior to this questioning and was made aware he could possibly be a suspect. He knows the investigators aren't going to divulge info to him at this point.

He was dismissed from university due to plagiarism. That’s some performance of honesty right there, doncha think? I’ll be curious of the outcome on the investigation of Stephen Smith’s death, whom the whole family called a f@gott.
They were far from grilling him. They were gently but thoroughly questioning him to illicit as much info as they could. Information that would aid in the investigation & might potentially point them in the direction of the killer. They were doing their job.
If you would notice he is crying on this video. Trying hard to hide it but he is definitely crying. He may have been given something for his nerves by a doctor. A shock like this hits hard.
Tough to watch this interview now knowing what really happened with his dad’s theft, and pill popping, and lying about being at the scene of the crime!
Anyone will nitpick this interview. His father is in prison, mom and brother were murdered. So let’s rip apart the only innocent person left. What a nice society we live in. 🙄🖕🏼
For people who are commenting on his demeanor, this is how educated upper middle class Southerners talk. They use manners to maintain neutrality. Unlike his dad, who uses gross intimate emotions all the time, it is not classy to show your emotions to strangers. ( think Downton Abbey) Buster is not going to pull that "Paul-Paul" bulshit.
He also speaks very formally. When he talked about Paul and the game he said “he informed me that he would not be there”. Growing up with lawyers type formal talk. Very short concise sentences. Also recounting how he was told of what happened, he said “…he proceeds to tell me…”. He talks like a lawyer (or writing an essay)
lol you know who also teach their kids not to show emotions? stone cold blood mafiosi. we'll see how far that " upper class southern talk" will take him.

Just would like to say it’s super easy to say what you’d do in a situation you’ve never experienced/you’re not in. Can’t imagine my life changing overnight to this degree. Your mom, dad and brother are gone. You can’t grieve in peace because you’re constantly being questioned. Can’t do too much, can’t do to little.. everyone is hypercritical of every single thing you do. Hope he finds peace.
I think i would have a nervous breakdown. He most probably dissociated from the reality of what has happened to survive. In that state, you either don't act or you overreact. Nothing you do after dissociation is normal. If it was normal, I would worry about your character.
I feel so bad for Buster. Ppl need to let him be. 🤍🕊️🤍🕊️
You are a great person. Thank you for your kind words. I wish everyone was like you. ❤
Agreed! My heart goes out to him.
I can't help but feel sorry for this young man. He has lost his entire family. He is not to blame for the sins of his father.

Thank you for saying this. I feel the same way. Buster is an innocent victim his life has been turned upside down. He’s lost his entire nuclear family
Im sorry but like father like son. He knows something.
Stephen Smith
I hope that Buster is getting help, emotionally.
U think he still talk to his dad?
Nope
His father is daily calling him from jail . Begging for attention , money and Love … imagine
Me too. And also he's been persecuted before he's done anything wrong just because of his last name.
Unlike the other judgmental ppl in these comments
Me too, regardless of his privileged upbringing and things he may or may not have done in the past, still feel for this young man and the family
Plus he can’t even go in public without people yelling and being rude to him.
Buster lived almost 4 hours away and think he distanced himself from his family for a reason
@@amye8475 You're wrong. She had Bianca.
He went off to college and to a big town to get a job. Stop speculating.
If y’all listen to he & his dad’s jail calls you’ll hear the same calm demeanor.
Owe Buster an apology, he chews on his middle finger as a nervous habit. We thought he was flipping the finger during trial.
It’s probably a low key habit he & Paul both shared & began as youngsters & flipping his parents off?!
Five spaces is crazy.
How do you know he's a solid dude??
Very painful to listen to let alone watch. My heart breaks for this young man. I pray he is finding peace.

He’s just kinda there and not at the same time
Great comment.
He's never waivered on supporting his dad and claiming there is a killer(s) out there that are NOT his dad. Saying this kid, his son, "saw through him for years" is pure projection. It's a lotttttt more complicated than we may ever know.
Yep! However, I find it strange he talks to his mom 2-3 times a day, everyday at his age without living at home?!
He appeared to be wiping away tears with his hand with his head down mid-interview.
I'm curious if he was raised to surpress his emotions in public because the family had an image to maintain around town. Maybe he was just numb and in shock but he is a bit odd. The angle is killing me though!
Everyone grieves differently, but literally 3 days after this horrific event and nothing. Just weird IMO

I’m pretty sure his father did that behind his back.

I think they’re being given special treatment because of their status. The police didn’t want to march them into a police station like ‘common’ persons of interest.
They never asked him about mother father relationship at time or any straying from marriage
