- Patrick was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma after he had trouble breathing and a dry cough. Having always been athletic, his breathing started to get heavy while training for a marathon and he couldn’t continue to run. After an anniversary trip with his wife, his symptoms got worse.
After initially being diagnosed with asthma, an X-ray showed something in his chest that prompted a CT scan and then a PET scan, which eventually showed a 3 cm lymph node.
In this conversation, he shares undergoing 12 sessions of ABVD chemotherapy over six months, experiencing side effects and how he strived to stay positive and maintain hope.

I’m so happy that you’re cancer free! My husband had his chemo for stage 3C colon cancer on Fridays at three. He was down for the count all weekend, then went to work every day. He even went on business trips, but I went along because he was very weak. His company would have given him generous time off, but he wanted to work. They allowed him to come in late, leave early, and sometimes take a quick nap. Chemo for an entire year. He was 54 and lived until he was nearly 82.
That’s very encouraging to hear. I was diagnosed stage 3B colon cancer in April 2021 and a year and a half in remission now. Very anxious about this coming back but hoping it doesn’t

There is no such thing as cancer free! His cancer is in remission.
I was 35 years old when I was diagnosed with stage 2A Hodgkin's lymphoma. I had very similar symptoms to you. I got a ct scan and I had a tumor in my chest and neck and the one in my chest was pushing on my trachea and I had to be intubated and was in the icu for almost 3 weeks on a ventilator. I did 6 months of chemo and ended up beating the cancer. I am gonna be turning 40 in January and I am still cancer free.

I lost my darling best friend in April 1997 aged just 34 to Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. She left 2 little girls, aged 2 and 12. She was such a strong, vibrant, funny, talented, loyal and loving human being and I truly never believed that she would not beat this. It was a shock when she went into a coma at home. I went and sat with her, told her so many things that I loved about her and what she meant to me, fully believing that she would wake up. Her little 2 yr old daughter Grace came in saying “mummy, mumma” and there was no reaction from her at all, and then I knew and started to sob. I miss that girl every day of my life, and love her so much, my darling Meredith. We didn’t get to grow old together as we planned, drinking champagne on the deck at Andrea’s and all laughing together. I know I will see you again my adored friend. Until then, I can just love you and be grateful for you in my life. You were such a blessing to me, and to my family darling girl.

@@Nobody91795 thank you so much for your kindness. I was the lucky one to have a friend who loved me, despite my faults. She adored my family and they all adored her, my grandmother even telling me that she would swap places with Meredith as she was too young too die. Her Aunty Kath is still my Aunty Kath, she called my mum Ma. Oh she was and still is so loved. She left me a letter that I received after she died, telling me how much she loved me, and what my family had brought to her life (her own mother was a narcissist and still stole from her when she was dying) .
@@siennajames462 thank you so much for your kind comment. I was blessed, it just wasn’t long enough, and I will always feel cheated. As we get older, it’s the quality not the quantity of our friends that becomes important. And she was quality, funny, brutally honest, wicked sense of humour, and a soul that was just beautiful. Very strong willed and so loyal. Someone was nasty to me when she was dying, and she was so angry that she wanted to ring this person up and give her a mouthful. I didn’t let her, but it shows her loyalty, even near the end. She will never be gone from my life, so many things of hers surround me in my room, so she is always with me. ❤️

My mom survived Hodgkins Lymphoma when I was just a kid. I've got 3 siblings and she must have been so strong to fight through that when she knew her little ones needed her. I hope all the survivors who see this comment know how strong you are and how grateful your loved ones are to still have you around. You're amazing!
My husband has had non Hodgkin lymphoma Burkitt lymphoma the very aggressive type.
He had 6 months intensive chemo 8 spine chemo 😢.
And thankfully he went to remission from 2015 and still living his healthy life 💕
There is still hope I'm still waiting to be staged and I'm very scared when we here cancer automatically we think death bit with technology these days we can live a very long life sooo happy for you and your family
Tell him to go to LabCrop and constantly check his blood work (it’s like $100 bucks per test and you don’t need a doctor’s referral) and to avoid ALL sugars (sugar fuels cancer…cancer needs sugar to live).
Patrick: It was so great to hear of your successful treatment. This October 7th, I will celebrate the 37th anniversary of my diagnosis with Hodgkin’s stage 2B,at the age of 33.
I started out with a bad cough, and pressure around around my windpipe. I also had that telltale lump near my collarbone. I was somewhat concerned, because my sister in law had similar symptoms before her HL diagnosis.
I also began to run a fever of about 101 degrees every afternoon for about 8 weeks prior to my diagnosis.
After I had the official diagnosis, my brother called my sister in law’s oncologist in Manhattan, and I had an appointment for two days later. At that visit, the oncologist outlined the treatment plan. I was to receive both radiation and a multi-drug chemotherapy regimen. Chemo was weekly in the doctor’s office, not the hospital. He had lab people who would take your blood and run it through a machine, so the doctor would know what you numbers were. I Ireceived the drugs injected into my right hand. After I was through with the drugs, he outlined a regimen of pills (including prednisone). That first week, before the actual treatment began, he gave me a prescription for a drug that he said would make me feel better (and I did).
He called me that Sunday morning, just to see how I was doing, and he also gave me his home phone number to call if I had any questions.
All in all, the treatment took about a year.
You will probably have follow up visits to catch long term side effects of the treatment, but I’m sure your oncologist will refer you to the right people.
I also changed my career after I had my treatment. I took the plunge and became a teacher. After serving for 27 years,I retired a number of years ago.
Patrick-you have a lot of life to look forward to. Enjoy and stay healthy….
I went to an employment physical in 1977. The doctor said, 'What's this on your neck?' Mister Oblivious never noticed the large mass (now a zipper) there. Stage 3A. I'm still here decades later.
30 year survivor of stage IVB Hodgkins. Had hundreds of infected nodes throughout my body. Did MOPP/ABV, 6 weeks of high dose radiation, and I had my spleen removed. Still alive today 2024! Hang in there, Brother Patrick! You’ll do great!
The same thing happened when I got chemo for testicular cancer. This is my 3rd life. I have had 2 bad accidents prior to cancer. Cool bro. I also beat cancer. I feel after cancer everyday is more precious and a new beginning. God is looking out for you. We survived for a reason. Best of luck.

In 2020 I was diagnosed with stage 4 B cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, I started my first round of chemotherapy on the 12th March 2020 and the first covid lockdown happened the 29th March 2020, frightening experience
I’m 40 years old and was diagnosed with Hodgkins in 2021. I experienced the same breathing issues with exertion. I was kinda blown off by my PCP even after I found an enlarged lymph node on my collar bone. Thankfully, I went for more testing and it was only about 2 months in between the discovery of the lymph node and diagnosis. I finished chemo February of last year and have been cancer free ever since. Thanks for sharing your story!

Wow, your symptoms are identical to mine..including my GP saying I have asthma and tried sending me home with asthma meds,,I literally said “ it feels like I have something in my chest , my breath sounds like I’m breathing under water..he gave me a req for a chest X-ray just to make me feel better….long story short..after getting X-ray 3 weeks after ..it showed 13cm mass..said it could be lung cancer or HL. I thought I’m deadman walking…bronchoscopy biopsy confirmed Stage 2B hl nodular sclerosing at 33 yrs. I’m 10 years out now post chemo and rads and just yesterday my oncologist has officially discharged me from my yearly follow ups.

I know you have to reply to a lot that I'm in the Houston area MD Anderson has seen you for three years and Dunn pet scans CG MRIs bone density blood work and giving me probably 22 diagnosis. I was put on the back burner covid and it has been a nightmare. I have rashes all the time my skin is just my feet swell I used to be an active healthy person I'm a zookeeper a travel to Africa they have done so much work up on me and cast-off so many things without even biopsy or looking at pathology. If I may ask I am so weak and desperate and I'm about to leave the country should go try somewhere else I have really good insurance and I'm in the Houston area can you help me but maybe sharing who you saw at Methodist
If you were nine just sharing the department that would be amazing I am so desperate and I feel so alone in this battle it's been years dermatology endocrinologist internal medicine infectious disease I mean it goes on and on all these doctors gave me these diagnoses never explained anything through them on my portal and basically when I had to research and self-advocate.... They were just freaking symptoms lymphoma make sense to me the welts the skin rashes the night sweats.. biopsies coming back on my skin lesions that are normal but they shouldn't be there then and I have no autoimmune diseases I am really trying to figure out how to get these doctors to have some kind of correlation but they don't maybe at Methodist it would be better I used to go there when I had my melanoma removed. Hi Patrick, your story is helping me a lot. I have also been very active all my life, running and doing CrossFit almost every day, and recently, I felt so tired that a 4 km run looked like an achievement. After 2 months of tests, I was discovered to have Hodgkin lymphoma stage 2. I will start with chemotherapy this week. I felt a bit worried about how it will affect my body, so I started looking into patient stories and found your video. It is very helpful for me to see your story. I have so many questions 🙈 Thank you for sharing.
I had stage 3B 35 years ago. MOPP + ABVD did the job. I had been sick for a very long time before it was diagnosed so i had no positive energy, i just felt drained throughout the ordeal. But energy came slowly back after. If you have Hodgkins, try to be positive as much as you can and do what doctors tell you.
My mom was 75 when sy had bronchitis quite regularly... Her GP suspected something worse and she was eventually diagnosed with lung cancer - the lining of one lung... She is still alive seven years later and finished her last cycle of chemo... It is a tough journey, not a walk in the park.The last six months were quite challenging. But every day is a new day granted to us by God. All the best to all who are dealing with cancer/supporter of cancer patients.

First, thanks for sharing your story, and I’m so happy you had a positive outcome, that’s absolutely wonderful! But now I am inspired to tell my story, but because it is way too long, I’ll give you a short version, I had to die to save my life. I’ve had Crohn’s disease all my life, but never got diagnosed until I was 20. It was out of control, they said it was stage for Crohn’s disease, the worst case they had ever seen. After a few months in the hospital , after diagnosis, they let me go home. But it was so bad, I couldn’t keep anything down, not even water. Back to the hospital. I went and stayed for six months. Shortly after my 21st birthday while in the hospital, my Large intestine ruptured. I was so stupid, they knew it was going to burst, but I was terrified, so I kept refusing surgery until it was too late. By the time they got me to the OR, I was flatline for three minutes. (I had a really amazing near death experience, if you want to know, more, asked me, because it takes a lot of typing to explain) They got my heart going, and when they cut me open to remove all the toxins that flooded my abdominal cavity, they found malignant tumors, growing on the outside of my shattered intestine that they didn’t know was there. When I went for my postop, follow up six months later, they told me that if my intestine hadn’t ruptured, they never would’ve known the cancer was there until it was too late to do anything about it, because the symptoms were being masked by the symptoms of the Crohn’s disease. So I literally had to die to save my life. Mediately started me on chemotherapy, radiation, and a ton of medication. Unfortunately, every time I thought it was gone, it would come back. I am down 54, and total cancer came back four times, each time with less than a 5% chance of survival. Between the cancer and the Crohn’s disease and all the complications that go with him, I had 37 surgeries over three decades, removing 95% of my entire G.I. tract. I almost died three more times, the doctors cannot explain how I am still alive. There’s no logical explanation for it, but I know the truth, I know it was God himself, who saved me. I’m not a Bible thumper, but I am a devout Christian, when I had my near death experience, that changed everything for me. I knew that everything happens for a reason, and why. Most people hear my story and don’t believe me, but I’m telling the truth. I had to go on permanent long of disability years ago, something I was not prepared for, but now I know why. My dear mother, and father, who are 90 and 88 respectively, still live in their own home, but have numerous health problems. If I wasn’t able to go to their house several times a week to take care of them and help them, they would have been forced to go into a nursing home, and probably would not be here anymore. But because I went through all that, and I am now available any time they need me, on there. If you saw me, you could never tell there was anything wrong with me, unless I lift up my shirt where you can see the huge deep scars all over my abdomen, the ileostomy bag, I have to wear every day, forever, and my PICC line, which I use every single day to pump myself full of IV, nutrition and fluids, to keep me alive, but I can still drive, walk, and do light things around the house. Everything I went through, over three decades of hell on earth, which doesn’t come close to describing it, the 11 chronic diseases I developed as side effects from all the surgeries, chemotherapies, radiation, medication, etc. was for a reason, so I could be here in my parents, final years, allowing grandma to enjoy life to its fullest, and allowing me the privilege and joy of spending so much time with the two people I love more than anything in this world. I honestly believe that’s why I went through all of it. I have to believe that, because I would go crazy otherwise. Without exaggeration, for months, on end, I would cry myself to sleep in the hospital every night, begging for death, and wake up the same way, thank God, literally, it’s one request he did not give me! I know the cancer can come back anytime, but last time it was systemic, in my lungs, liver, brain, spine, testicles, prostate…. And then over a period of six months after we finished the chemotherapy because it wasn’t doing anything, they started to disappear, and nobody knows why. I was supposed to die, they had arranged, hospice care, told me I only had a few months, but I just started feeling better and better. The doctors were absolutely baffled. sending my case all over the country looking for answers, but they never found any. They should have called my parish priest, now, granted, I’m not exactly a saint, I don’t really know why I was spared, that’s why I believe I was scared so I could be there to take care of my parents, who gave me everything, and more than I could’ve ever asked for. Cancer could be so mysterious, doctors tell you what they have been taught, or what they’ve seen with other patients, but no two patients are the same, everyone has a different outcome. So don’t put too much stock into what the doctors tell you regarding chances of survival. Like I said, I should be dead, I’m still here. I don’t know how long I have. The last time I had cancer was 10 years ago, the Crohn’s disease will never go away, but because there’s almost no intestines left to operate on, my internal organs are starting to fail, so I take it one day at a time, and I appreciate each day, because I never know what the next one will bring. I literally live every day as though it will be my last call because it very well could be. Thank you for letting me share my solitude, I don’t need to take away from the video, but because his story is so positive, I thought I would share one too, just to show people that not all cancer, patients die, the human body is absolutely remarkable, and there’s still a lot of mystery. The doctors cannot explain. I only pray to God I can stay healthy enough until my parents are going, after that, what happens to me doesn’t matter.

Congratulations to being Cancer free! I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma stage 2. Had a huge lump on my neck , and under my arm, stayed sick all the time. I had the tumor from my neck removed , cancer was all in my chest !That’s was 1999 after chemo , radiation treatments cancer free now for 24 years. I’m happy to watch your story. I just completed 12 rounds of Chemotherapy for Hodgkins Lymphoma Stage 4 B last Monday so I understand what you went through. I’m happy I got checked when I did and I’m grateful for the NHS. My story is the best case scenario possible as I made a complete recovery after 4 rounds of ABVD. The PET scan did not find any trace of cancer after Cycle 2 round 2 so my doctors dropped the Bleomycin. I did struggle with lots of sides effects like hyperpigmentation, constipation, itching, thrush, peripheral neuropathy and nausea for a few days but my symptoms got better after the bleomycin was dropped so I went on AVD for the last 8 rounds. I don’t know how i did it but I’m grateful for everyone around me who supported me. It feels good to beat Cancer.

Man I can relate to this story so much. My son at 26 contracted cancer. It took a good year for him to beat cancer and be cancer free. It been 6 years now being cancer free. He went thru hell and back trying to best it. But he had family support of three siblings, three aunts and uncles and many classmates all pulling for him. As his father I was devastated, him having cancer at only 26. He was just beginning his adult life and it seemed so unfair.

I pretty much have the same exact story, except no one believed me when i said my breathing was obstructed. Doctors wanted to prescribe anti anxiety meds. That's how bad i was gaslit

I was diagnosed (after a biopsy and PET scan) with Stage 4B (widespread) Hodgkins lymphoma in 2017 after a really bad bout of shingles ...and continued weight loss. I started ABVD chemotherapy and - after two weeks - my bloods miraculously appeared to be coming back to normal. After 4 weeks I had another PET scan and the cancer had completely disappeared! My haematologist prudently kept me on the 6 month chemo course but removed bleomycin as it can adversely affect your lungs. At the end of the 6 months, I had no chemo for a month, then had another PET scan which again showed no cancer. In 2022, I was signed off as a survivor. I was treated free of charge by our wonderful NHS in the UK. (The only side effects from the chemo are numbness on my fingertips and on the soles of my feet caused by the vinblastine dosage).
My son had non hodgkins lymphoma stage three when he was eight years old, he had a tumour his stomach which wrapped round his aorta and then into the lymph glands in his neck, it was also in his bone marrow. He had a central line inserted and started six months of really intense chemo with intrathecal chemo into his spine at the beginning and end of each cycle twelve in all. He lost his hair finger nails toe nails, needed platelets and blood with every cycle, got sepsis and ended up being tube fed. An horrendous experience. But he's, now 35. He had vincristine, methotrexate, cytarabine doxurubicin and cyclophosphamide. It didn't help that I worked in oncology so I knew just what was going to happen. Because he hadn't gone through puberty they didn't know if he'd be sterile or not and they couldn't do any sperm storage. He is sterile but he doesn't want kids so that's OK. He also had steroids to boost his appetite.

My spouse is 65 and a triathlete. He had a biopsy today,however the doctor is 90% positive he has lymphoma. We don’t know which type of lymphoma he has or the stage at this point.

I am also a Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor I noticed a lump by my jaw and my doctor got me in because I never call her she saw me and almost immediately told me that I was calling off of work and going for testing we caught it early stage 2

Congrats! I'm in round 4 for HL. I often feel I'll pass because of chemo rather than the cancer in my belly. It's got a wonderful survival rate, I don't feel it applies to me. I've mostly been bed bound the whole time. I guess I didn't start out with your kind of strength.

Remember that this took place during COVID. Now things have returned to normal. Sadly, there are many people dealing with various cancers that are also vying for appointments with doctors.

I had Pfeiffer a year before I had the diagnosis Hodgkin's . This was in 2001.
My only symptome was a terrible itch. It started at my feet, and eventually my whole body started itching.
Thankfully my GP and the specialist in hospital were very good and they got me tested quickly. Blood, CT, the lot.
After the CT the specialist called me after work and said they found lymphnodes that were enlarged. So I had to have an operation to remove tissue and they did a bonemarrowpunction. Results came back as Hodgkin,stage 1A so I had a very good chance for survival because we found it early.
Today I have bad memory because of the EBVD chemo's and my arteries are still hard so giving blood can still be very difficult.
Can I ask what size your lymph node?
@@gracellibron3502 I'm sorry, I 'm sure they told me after the CT scan but I can't remember. It was located behind my chest and I never felt it myself.
Next month it is 22 years ago and I'm glad the doctor did all these tests to find it.
My GP said afterwords that she saw a red flag when the tablets she gave me to stop the itching didn't help at all and when my bloodwork came back she send me to the hospital to have it checked out.
My daughter in laws mom has leukemia and has been fighting the disease for years now. Through COVID time all her treatments where completely stopped.

Did you ever have Lyme Disease?
My nephew contracted LD. The LD seemed to impact his immune system.
Two years later, he was diagnosed with lymphoma.
He went through 3 years of treatment and survived.
I had Lyme disease unknowingly for years, and am now having lymphoma symptoms

Yeah I've been struggling with such bad GERD and lethargy. I wonder if having Covid for a lot of people has affected us all. Cancer runs in my family so I have to be careful. I need to get a cancer screening done soon I'm do to one. I noticed my hair has been falling out but it's all probably due to bad anxiety. I hope you feel better. My lungs have been weird also can't explain it but I'm assuming it's GERD. This is crazy because you are so healthy. And you speak of smoking it's so bad in my apartment complex that I had to put bags under my door sense I'm not working right now...my neighbor smokes daily it's my apartment complex for allowing it to happen. I'm gonna start wearing a mask in public and in doors when it's bad I can't deal with it anymore. Smoking should be illegal it's so toxic. I used to smoke also not too badly but was around it and my family has dealt with cancer also.
Our lymph nodes drain every pm whilst sleeping. Our necks,armpits, breasts, and groins. Massage every pm before sleeping. I also quit deodorants, plugging our lymph nodes up. I quit all chemicals, bounce sheets, perfumes,etc. No processed foods, it's completely changed my health.
Similar experience, except mine was like heartburn.
Don't forget we are not getting younger, so better take care of your health.

majority of Hodgkins patients test positive for EBV/MONO even if it's inactive. Lysine is a great preventative, on the other hand, arginine/high arginine diet aggravates it. Gluten is a contributor as well. Be sure to research the side effects of ABVD, there are supplements you can take that will help with to counteract the damage it causes.
I have severe asthma plus allergies and i have an extreme / astronomical ige over 5000/8000 and high wbc . my doc wants to rule out lymphoma. Im scared but i have no symptoms of it but i do cough a lot and am stuffy a lot . I recently had a chest infection and was put on antibiotics and it did the trick ! however i do have really bad health anxiety so im assuming the worst lol

You did have swollen lymph nodes throughout your life. You just didn't realize it. We all have had swollen nodes.
But not all of them are cancer.
I’ve had two swollen lymph nodes under my jaw for about a year (at least what I’ve noticed). I went to see the dock but he just shrugged it off and said it could be a lot of things. I’ve got a weird hunch it might be lymphoma so I’m going in soon to try and get this figured out!

@@johnvaldivia4718One doc said they were enlarged but my primary said they seemed enlarged but normal. Since I don't have other symptoms like fatigue, night sweats, etc. and there are no other lymph nodes in my neck, armpit and groin that are swelling he thinks it could be for other reasons like allergies, irritants in my house, etc. They did some bloodwork a few months back and he said that while bloodwork cant determine whether or not you have NHL/HL, it can raise red flags to other health issues directly caused by NHL/HL. Everything looks good on my blood work he said. I was, however, looking for peace of mind and his external examination didn't give me that so I requested an ultrasound which I have on Nov 13. If i remember, I will update on findings. Regardless, I am a bit stressed for the fear of hearing "you have cancer" but I am not terribly worried about it in general since it seems to be quite localized (meaning, only under my jaw) and NHL/HL are pretty treatable.
I know you are very athletic but what about your food? Was it mainly whole food? Because I think other than genetics and exposure to harsh chemicals, food is also a very big factor. Of course there's other many unknown reasons for it as well. But I'm just curious about your diet.
By the way friends I know who has cancer are doing vitamin C 15-50g infusion every week or every 3weeks to stop and decrease their tumors. So far so good, one friend has many tumors and since a year of vitamin infusion his tumors got smaller or at least stop spreading. Just for those who doesn't want to do chemo maybe can check it out.
