Man, I can't thank you enough for showing me how to play arthur mcbride. I'm an Iirishman, I knew DADGAD was a Celtic friendly tuning, but I assosiated open g tuning with delta blues and Keith Richards. It was cool to be able to play that american blues style stuff in open g, but it was a revelation learnin' McBride in that tuning. It was cool that delta blues tuning had the possibility to sound straight up Celtic Thanks so much dude. I will now learn this. You are a legend may you have the luck of the real Irish, not many real Irish left, I could go into the social science view of this but eh... not the time or place
Wow, what a cool thing to see just after I got off the tractor in the deep snow collecting firewood here in the Kootenay Mountains of BC. Paul Brady’s version, pure art that it is, now with your excellent lesson, has just become accessible to us mere mortals. Many thanks.
What a find, Daniel! I am in your debt, sir, for taking the mystery out of Paul Brady's guitar playing which I have been trying to emulate for years now in vain. Absolutely love this.
I learned this from you when you released the video a while ago. Thank you ever so much for this lesson! I enjoy playing it a lot, unfortunatley it is to high for me to sing even without the capo. But even without vocals, it sounds really, really good on a 12 string.
@@danielsherrill I just have the guitar to play it, but recording it is beyond my capacities... If you get around a 12-string that you can retune, try it.
Thank you Daniel. In one short and very enjoyable lesson you've managed to demystify something that I've struggled with..... for ever!! Off to the kitchen table where I'll no doubt spend many hours generally getting it wrong.
Daniel, it was a very good idea to buy your tabs as well. I can really recommend buying them - they make everything even more clear! I bought Paul Bradys DVD (homespun tapes) as well (same evening I bought your tabs), but: Paul Brady explains, how his songs are meant to be, what he intends to do and how he he wants to sound (which is quite helpful as well) whereas you EXACTLY explain what he is doing! And that applies to Mary and the Soldier & to Arthur McBride as well! So, guitar players out there > Buy Daniels tabs - the combination of explanation + tabs make it quite easy to learn these songs. Which I wanted to do since I came across these songs some 40 years ago. No youtube in the olden days ...
Great video Daniel. Thanks very much. This really is yet again another fantastically taught song. You taught me how to play Arthur Mcbride in January-February this year. It was tough graft but thanks to you I have actually played that in front of people already. Can't wait to have this one finished. Thanks again!
Daniel... OUTSTANDING Video instruction!! I take Skype Lessons from a guy named Tony McManus, who actually knows Paul Brady fairly well. He once "opened" for him in a famous Pub in Dublin. Your attention to detail is impressive! I use the "Amazing Slow Downer" (Roni Music) to get more details. One thing he mentioned about Paul: "he almost never plays it the same way twice". As you know, Paul is a master of improvisation, and has been doing it for years!! I've learned a great deal from this video. Blessings to you...
for sure, Paul is a Master of improv, which is why I had to listen to several different versions, and then pick my favorite moments...Tony seems great! Any other tunes I should consider adding to the queue of lessons?
@@danielsherrill Well, Tony taught me Arthur McBride which is in "open G". Again, weird how PB plays it in his younger days differently from today. He also told me the story of how Bob Dylan called BP on the phone, and asked PB to teach him Arthur McBride. The FUNNY part: Dylan almost NEVER used anything but standard tuning. He was TOTALLY confused when Paul started playing the Open G chords...ha ha ha,,,!
Great tutorial, thank you. I learned your version of Arthur McBride a while ago and have started with this one. One thing I found with Arthur is that when I play it, there are so many verses that it gets a bit stale without knowing some of the little variations that Paul uses throughout the song. So if you ever feel like making the tutorials slightly longer to include some of those extra little fills that would be very welcome! Thanks again
@@danielsherrill I am only a third through the lesson so i don't know if i will end up needing to, but I tend not to use a pick when playing and seems to be working so far
This is superb Daniel!!! I've been playing your video for about a month and it's now going into my fingers and my heart! Maybe try my folk heroes-Richard Thompson, Martin Carthy and John Martyn!!
@@danielsherrill www.homespun.com/shop/product/the-guitar-of-paul-brady/ A great DVD but the transcription is not as detailed as yours. Paul shows how he does it in the video none the less. Is Arthur McBride on your to do list?
Hi Daniel, thanks mate that's great song and great lesson put together. You really know you're stuff. I've donated and requested tab Will get the head down lots of learning in this one. Would you consider doing a lesson for Bright blue rose by jimmy mccarthy? There's a video of him doing a fingerstyle arrangement of it on TH-cam it's brilliant!
@@danielsherrill Thanks I write songs and sing but my guitar playing needs to improve because if I have no other instruments playing with me it's not very interesting :) I have written songs in open D though my favourite tuning..
If you look up the Clancy brothers and Tommy makem - brennan on the moor on the ed Sullivan show, it's only 3 chords but I can never nail the strumming and time. Or if you search Liam Clancy - Patriot game the finger picking is beautiful 👌
Hi Daniel. By any chance would you be able to figure out buckdancers choice (John Fahey version) please? I cannot find any on it apart from a few great covers which are just a bit too tricky to slow down and break up. Thanks very much lad.
