Why do puppies breathe fast while sleeping?!? | Veterinarian Explains

  • Hey Guys! I’m Dr.Lindsay Butzer a small animal veterinarian and a supper common new puppy owner question I get is:
Why does my puppy breathe so fast when they are sleeping and is this OK?
If you’re like me, its hard not to just stare at your cute puppy while they sleep, since we all know having a wild and crazy puppy will exhaust any new dog owner and seeing them finally sleep is a relief and probably the cutest thing in the world.
But while you are mesmerized by their sleepy cuteness you then notice how hard and fast they are breathing, you may question is something wrong with my puppy??
So I'm here to say, It is completely normal for your puppy to breathe fast while they are sleeping.
One reason they appear to be breathing “hard” maybe is that they have delicate ribs and muscles, and it may simply take extra effort from their tiny growing body’s to take each breath. And it appears like they are struggling to breathe while they are sleeping.
The normal respiratory rate for a puppy is anywhere from 10 to 40 breaths per minute. You can count your puppies’ breaths per minute to make sure the breathing is not alarmingly elevated. If It is over 40 you will want to contact your veterinarian.
Puppies also dream way more than adult dogs. They get into a deeper REM sleep where their brain activity increases, their eyes dart around quickly, their legs can kick or even look like they are running after a ball.
Adult dogs also dream, but not as often since they are usually in a lighter sleep guarding the house.
So, some new puppy owners have even called me concerned that their puppy has seizures every night, they show me videos and I have to reassure them that they are simply dreaming.
Alright guys, so I hope I helped calm you down about your puppy breathing fast and heavy and that it is normal within 10-40 beats per minute.

you're welcome!! Every Time I get a new puppy myself haha or watching my litters of puppies - I notice they breathe hard and fast so I made this video! it is normal, unless they have boogers or green nasal discharge they could be sick. But if they are not sick, its normal.

Omg this saved my mental so much. I have generalized anxiety and noticed my dog laying on me breathing so fast but sleep. I got so scared it raised my anxiety. I’m 30 yrs old and this is the first dog I ever got attached to. Anxiety caused me to be so anti social and distant from people and animals. Even though I love and respect both. But my dream dog has been a German shepherd and I finally got one! And I keep him glued to my side, now I can’t picture life without him. I was so worried. He’s only 2 months now💙💙

Thank you for calming my nerves. 😅 My 8 month old puppy’s respiratory rate is 40-60 per minute and I was genuinely Terrified something was wrong. (He’s a large breed mix and had just been exercising for an hour). He likes to get into stuff but nothing else seemed to be wrong so I was a bit freaked.😂

Thank you so much for this video :) My heeler girls are all 7 to 14 years old now and I recently got a new pup who is fitting in surprisingly well..my older girls are being so sweet to her :) Shes 10 weeks old, and they wear her out all day running around our 2 acre property. So shes sleeping good at night! But last night was our second night since getting her, and both nights she was breathing really fast at different times during sleep, while normal other times, so I was wondering. Its been along time since I had a puppy, so thank you again for the reassurance!

why am i counting 150 breaths p/m? I thought each time the chest moves was a breath eg: 1:27 i counted 158 bpm. Please tell me im wrong. My baby girl was breathing that fast for hours tonight and i am still crapping myself. She is my whole world... :(

  • @valinies

Please I need answers. :( You say 10-40 breaths/min but the clips with the puppies in your video breathes faster than 40. Is this normal then I guess? My puppy breathes between 50-100 per min (sometimes she breathes normally 20 bpm) and she also pants when shes awake. Shes been to many vets and they could not find anything wrong with her lungs or heart. And no pain. But why is she breathing so fast then? Could it mean she is just hot? (She doesnt pant when shes outside in the cold, only inside) She is 6,5 months old. I just bought her and picked her up 2 days ago. She is a Finnish Lapponian. Happy and active, eats normally. Please I need answers :(

Any more answers on your puppy? I got one two days ago and he also breaths at like 50-60bpm but he seems fine 😭 my anxiety through the roof

    • @valinies
      @valinies 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@autumpeacock4779 No more answers.. If its a tiny breed (ex chihuahua) i would get it checked out. I feel like bigger breeds (like 10kg and above) tend to breathe faster/pant more. Just an observation I made by looking at peoples dogs. Go to a dog park and the big dogs pant and the small dogs just dont (unless its very hot outside)
My puppy is still breathing fast but I decided that as long as shes alert and doesnt show any signs of being sick, I will wait. I just got anxiety pills prescribed by my vet and Im curious what it will do.
I believe your puppy is totally fine, its very rare that the only sign of a very sick dog would be fast breathing. If its a life threatening disease it will either get worse very soon or come with other symptoms. And if its something not so serious you will have time to see a vet and get it treated! Possible things that could cause fast breathing: lack of sleep (puppies should sleep about 16 hours a day), stress (ex moving to a new home) or lack of energy due to food that dont have good nutrients, or simply if your pup is not eating enough.
Try not to stress and stay positive!
Good luck and I wish u and ur puppydog the best!

She tends to breath in hard and snorts if I pick her up. I try to lift her from the chest and bottom trying to keep the weight to her bottom. Do you think I should look into surgery or is this normal for her age? Thanks!
