The whole runaway global warming Venus thing almost happened to the earth during the Carboniferous. If it weren’t for newly evolved vascular plants that produced cellulose, a Carbon containing compound that at the time nothing could digest; Increased volcanism during the period would have boosted the carbon dioxide levels to 15 percent. Which of course would have trapped enough heat to boil off the oceans and whipe out all life.
Regarding the global warming, I also read that it is relatively likely to happen in the far future, as the sun brightens as it ages - iirc, it is predicted that in about a billion years, this brightening of the sun will make Earth hot enough to push it into this runaway greenhouse effect. Could that also be what contributed to this happening on Venus? I.e. initiall Venus was quite well habitable, but after several hundred million years the sun had brightened enough to move the inner edge of the habitable zone outside of Venus's orbited, thus causing its oceans to boil off.
Hold on, hold on! Where does Jesus fit into all this? I didn't see Him mentioned anywhere in that explanation, so I know you must be wrong. How many years before the great flood was this 'Carboniferous' you speak of? Also, global warming is just God's ever-growing love. Repent, sinners!
Ok so how hot *is* it in Texas? Would I want to be there? Europe is experiencing an unprecedented heat wave, with temperatures surpassing 90°F for weeks without pause where they would have otherwise barely made 85°F
I was expecting "But the thermonuclear war almost guaranteed to happen because of the destabilizing effects of climate change is not an act of God!" :) :(
I *really* hoped this wasn't a call to some poor call center rep. Those jobs suck without some ******* making prank calls. Thanks for not making prank calls, Joe.
I used to have real anxiety about the end of the world. My parents didn't let me and my siblings watch cartoons very often so the only channels we watched were History and Discovery Channel. It got so bad that I often woke up from nightmares when I was around 7-8 years old all the way till I was 10, my parents would offer no type of solace, so it was traumatic. When 2012 approached I was really depressed, but wow, we can even do something about the worst kinds of scenarios, little me would have appreciated that very much
Isaac's videos are always beautifully made and presented. They're like watching hard science fiction that's heavy on the science, but with plenty of food for thought. Great collaboration, Joe. Look forward to more.
Joe Scott, you are one of my favorites. You do an excellent job presenting interesting content, with a very comfortable sense of humor. You are a Lightbringer, please continue being awesome.
"august in texas"... yeah... i was just up in dallas for my brother's wedding a few weeks ago. it was outdoor. when we left the wedding and got back in the car, it was 108. in the shade. later, the temp said 122f. that's 50c for the rest of the world. thankfully it wasn't very humid, but damn.
Thx for the f to c conversion, very thoughtfull of you, little to none care about that. Anyway, 50 c, dam man, thats insane... my hottest summer was like 42 and I feel like melting! 😅

Mid-Atlantic here - the humidity and temperature are both high here, which made me think that people (however mindless and sheep-like) will adapt (but only to fashions) (sigh) - and the first thing to change will be clothes - heavy fabrics do not cut it (I've turned to wicking fabrics myself - which are a 100% improvement over cotton, which was a 100% improvement over wool)... who knows, the Toga may make a comeback...
Back in the early 80s I moved to the Huston area for a year to work residential construction (not by the hour but by how much we accomplished which provided great paydays). During that summer, for 30 days straight, it reached over 100 degrees along with the humidity hitting over 90%. We places water throughout the jobs but by 12-1p it was getting difficult to cool off and to hang on to our tools (sweat) because of the pace we were keeping and the humidity. Did I mention the heat? We'd leave for work in dark morning to get a jump on the heat and sometimes we even could see our breath. That always puzzled me (yes I know, the humidity).
Dog Man "Suggest climate denial... people: 'reeeee'". Why is this a contraversial topic? It's only a problem in America where Americans have internalized climate change as a criticism of thd American lifestyle. China and India see the problem, trust the science, and look at it as another opportunity to develop nuclear and renewables. The whole debate in the US threatens to take the whole scientific revolution with it. Why trust biology, physics, chemistry when Americans won't trust climate science? The same process which laid out the foundations of modern engineering went into climate science. And the consequences of climate research are waaay worse than physics or chemistry conclusions. But no, accepting the science of climate change would require accepting a change in how things get done in America. Oil & coal, can't touch those! Those define 'Murica. The US would have to transition to electric cars and electric railways and stop flying everywhere. American might just have to cut down on the amount of beef they eat.
That's really just an example of extremely bad programming, or a breakdown in teamwork (i.e. "I thought THEY were programming the STOP command")... but it is, foremost, an example of continued universal human philosophical cluelessness (which includes programmers) (i.e. a fully-independent AI entity will be only as good as its core philosophy) (enter me)...

I watch videos in another browser but initially load them in my main browser. So I loaded your video, moved it to the other browser and was watching that as I opened up other videos from my email. Then it gets to the part where she says "I've see Issac Artur's video" and I look over and see the last video I had loaded on my main browser is Issac's counterpart to this. Kind of meaningless rambling comment, but I thought it was funny.
"because Firefox seems to handle 1.5x playback better than Chromium/Vivaldi does" I prefer Vivaldi for most things. But Firefox does quite well at TH-cam.
I don't know what to me so long to sub, I've watched like half your videos over the last couple weeks alone! I'm making my kids and family sub too, love your work Joe!
Is there an air-tight, rock solid, crystal clear argument that will counter the climate change skeptics? I have been looking at various counter arguments to global warming and they basically amount to: 1) The earth's climate is always changing. 2) The CO2 level has been much higher in the past, even before several different ice ages. 3)The scientists doing climate research are incentivized to believe their own alarmism because otherwise they would lose funding.
I often wonder this. Like what do you need to see to believe it? It's very simple for me, if the global temperatures start going down, then the scientists were wrong and I'll change my opinion. So what do they need to see?
+Joe Scott Apparently when people have their identities connected to a belief, they will even double down on that belief even when presented with contrary evidence. This is a problem on the left (beliefs about blank slate/sex & gender) and the right side of the political spectrum, but with climate change, the evidence seems unequivocal. Not only does the global average temperature continue to rise, the predictive models typically have been too conservative.
Take a look at the skeptical science website. They thoroughly debunk nearly all skeptic claims with research. There's no one size fits all rebuttal because the skeptic will continuously move the goalpost and change the claim
Check out the youtube channel potholer54. I could be wrong with the number. Anyhow, he addresses a lot of the skeptics. The downside is that it may require the skeptic to have more than a high school education.

I used to work in a call centre doing various thing and one of those was insurance. We had hours of recordings of pretty much exactly the opening to this video. A lot of those people were serious. When I was a trainer I made sure to incorporate some of those into my class.
No GRB producing stars in our Galaxy that pose a risk except WR-104 though we currently think that would be just a near miss but we are talking about degrees in our calculations of it's spin and basically basing that on the orbit trails of it's companion star.

What is often overlooked in talking about the grey goo scenario is thermodynamics. The growth would not actually be exponential, at least, not for very long, since heat dissipation limitations would limit the growth to something proportional to the surface area of the transformed matter, not to mention that these tiny machines can only transform nearby material into new machines, and so in the long run most of them would be sitting around with nothing to do, again limiting the rate of conversion to something proportional to the surface area of the transformed matter. It's hard to really imagine this transformation actually traveling at any appreciable velocity, after all, bacteria and fungi basically are grey goo, and they can't spread all that frighteningly fast.
That's right. When you're diving, you have to equalise the pressure by holding your nose and blowing gently as soon as you get underwater and every 2 or 3 feet on the way down. Cheers.
Aspect Science John Michael Godier is my next favorite after Joe and Isaac. I like that Frasier Cain too. Scishow is an old classic channel. The PBS Digital Studio channels are good. I just recently started watching Socratica, and she's really awesome! How about you?
Thanks for the comedy inserts, Joe. I had a few good laughs, you are funny even when speaking about apocalypse. "That we know of...." (dramatic Dr. Evil music)... . "Gama ray burst is a large burst of gamma rays....." (sound of crickets would be awesome here)..."I will get more specific." LOL ....
Try getting this out your head - at the beginning when the lady answered the phone, it sounded a bit like she said "Karma Sutra, how can I help you". Great video sir!

It's hard to really imagine this transformation actually traveling at any appreciable velocity, after all, bacteria and fungi basically are grey goo, and they can't spread all that frighteningly fast.
that intro was awesome and the 'I saw Isaacs video' bit got me good
7:01 The pressure at 1000 ft underwater is about 30 atmospheres, not 90. There are 90 atm at 898 m (2946 ft).
he confused a few scientific units in that video.
It's not the first time an American has confused metres for feet. _cough_ Mars Climate Orbiter _cough_
Blame it on British Aristocracy... (a king's foot, etc.)
Right, so it should have been 3000 ft. down... (my ears feel it only 8 feet down)...
That's right.
When you're diving, you have to equalise the pressure by holding your nose and blowing gently as soon as you get underwater and every 2 or 3 feet on the way down. Cheers.
Came from Isaac's channel. Love it.. Subscribed, rang the bell.
Opening bit was genius, Joe.
Who got that Stargate vibe with the first story ^^ And awesome work as usual :)
Here from Isaac Arthur .
I'm also a Gamer & Prepper , I have been waiting for this .
Issac and Joe in one video. What a surprise and a treat.
Totally! It's nice to see educational youtubers collabing! TH-cam still has hope! Who are your favourite science youtubers?
Joe, your the best. Thank you for the channel.
Very interesting and entertaining.
So glad I found your channel, Joe!
Try getting this out your head - at the beginning when the lady answered the phone, it sounded a bit like she said "Karma Sutra, how can I help you". Great video sir!
11:29 that is the coolest animation I’ve ever seen
YOU FINALLY BROUGHT THE SKITS BACK
Loving your videos! Also, extra props for the use of "Bork you up."
"THIS DOES SOUND LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A BOND MOVIE" my my... and here now we have a Bond movie about nanobots
I LOVE spreading Science via Recommendations. Want some?
oh joe. what an opening! loved it!!! well done man! well done
