I am so sorry to hear about your robbery. I appreciate the banter, stories, and sharing what works in the Rafi household. We wish you and your family a great 2025.
I started out just watching Mike's short clips, but then they allowed longer ones and I was hooked. Then I find the podcast between the two of you, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised with how the two of you present yourselves. This one was fun to follow along with - even though the primary subject wasn't something to find humor in, you managed to present some good information and not be totally depressed with everything that's transpired. Something I'd like to inject here regarding the burglary - if you can, have someone come by at totally random times to check on your house when you are going to be away - that way if someone is indeed watching, it makes it more difficult for them to figure out if there is a safe time. I go anywhere from 9am to 9pm to check on a family member's house when they are gone - sometimes I park where I can be seen, other times not so easily, but you can tell that I am in their house when my vehicle isn't obvious. Confusion is the main factor!!
This part was cut from the final edit but we actually did have someone stay at our home for part of the week while we were gone. We also had someone put out/take in our garbage cans and grab our mail daily. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to deter the robbers.
FYI, looks like you had audio issue 41:25 onwards, if you didn't already know that. But since I am typing already, I just wanted to say that it's always nice to hear other people's life experiences and showing us a peak behind the curtain between the life of a personal injury lawyer and family man. I work IT, so hearing how the law world works is interesting to me as it's something I never interact with. Love the podcast and getting to see how cases are handled and processed from the lawyer's standpoint. Now... for the miniature Viking funeral.
That audio issue is named Bunker and Birdie, who decided to bark, haha. … you can be invited to the Viking funeral. Are you good with a bow and arrow by chance?
@@MikeRafiLawyerI don't know about him but I am!!!I probably won't be of much help though since I live in Belgium 😂 On a more serious note I wish you and your family a very very happy 2025. I think the thing that angers me most is that your kids were so scared. I’ve had my car broken into and that feeling of being violated - at the end of the day it’s all replaceable. But the fear your kids experienced is unforgivable. Glad you guys were all safe thru this.
*TOPIC SUGGESTION:* I would like to know who prepares the meals in y’all’s relationship and what types of meals do you eat (keto, vegan, Southern, soul, etc.). Who spends the mental energy planning the meals? Do you grocery shop or get delivery? Are you teaching the kids how to cook and, if so, which parent is taking charge of that? Are the kids learning how to buy groceries (how to pick out good produce, how to determine which is the best deal, etc.)? Which kid likes the ‘kitchen’ skill the best? Love your podcast. My husband and I listen to it together. It’s one of the highlights of our week and we hope y’all keep it up. Thanks for your hard work!
I can only imagine how funny neighborhood watch Mike is interrogating police officers on Zoom. Collecting evidence he is running this neighborhood like a courtroom
I take care of people's pets and homes for a living. It's so important to have someone you trust checking in when you're out of town. You can have the best home alarm money can pay for but it won't do much if it takes the cops an hour to respond. I've had to sit and wait for the police to show up after a client gave me the wrong code/changed it without telling us on multiple occasions. Only once did the cops respond in less than 30 minutes, in an otherwise quiet and more affluent area.
The police can obtain a warrant to access information in iCloud, receive consent from Apple, or have a reason related to public safety or national security to access the information. However, if the person used Apple’s Advanced Data Protection feature, accessing most of the iCloud information would not be possible due to client-side encryption.
@JoshuaWKelly Thank you for the explanation, that was very interesting and informative. I will definitely be looking into the encryption scheme. Ngl I thought it was encrypted by default. Appreciate you 🦭
I've never been robbed. But a few years ago a couple of houses in our townhouse complex burnt down. The fire happened while we were eating dinner, facing the only window in the house that could see the fire. My kids were terrified that our house would burn down. I had to include my kids in calls to our insurance agent, so they could explain to all of us if our house did burn what protections did we have in place and how it would work day of, month of and so on. We had to pack emergency bags, so they could pack the things they thought most important. It was rough for a few months.
Yesss another podcasttttt episode letsgooo Ashleyyyy oh yeah and Mike hahah no but plsss keep dropping this I love it soooo muchhhh like I said on instagram yall dynamic is so lovely!! Btw Mike I watched you sinds 2 years ago.. sorry for my bad English still love from Europe (from the Netherlands) 🫶🏽❤️
Don't worry, you're far from the first person saying "the blind leading the deaf", and it does make sense. Deaf people being lead by the blind still isn't the best idea.
Reminds me of an old movie called Stir Crazy (I think) with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. One character is deaf, the other blind. And yes, there's a scene where the deaf person is trying to lead the blind guy by making loud stepping sounds.
“The blind leading the deaf” is a proverb that describes a situation where people who are not knowledgeable or understanding attempt to guide others who are similarly disadvantaged. This often leads to confusion and poor outcomes.
This entire debacle reminds me of when I was recruited to act as a decoy for a sting operation with the cops at 12. Later, I got in trouble for leaving newspaper club early (for the operation) and not writing my review of the newest minions movie. Can’t catch a break.
I'd love to hear what your biggest surprise about becoming a lawyer was/thing you weren't prepared for/thing you wish a more seasoned lawyer would've told you about before you started practicing
This is a really interesting episode! Thanks for sharing what was undoubtedly a violating and trying experience, and I hope you and the kids can move on with your lives (and maybe Mike can get his watches back) without any more trauma. I just wish the police responded with this level of alacrity and investigative gumption to *all* burglaries, but I suppose that's an unrealistic dream. It sounds like what got them caught was robbing the house of someone with secret-service protection. A bit of a blunder there.
43:00 25 and single guy here. People are surprised to hear I work weekend swing shifts (2pm to midnight). But I mean, 10% extra pay for swing shift and overtime + an extra day off as a result of the 10hr shifts? Hell yeah!
Future topic suggestion (since I hear a bunch of stories on some YT channels) -- Do you have any history with HOA issues; whether current, past, or law related ? For Mike (and this may be more for him and not necessarily for the podcast) -- any employment stories that you/firm have dealt with ? (Knowing that this isn't your speciality)
You are in luck, and maybe read our mind. We both have some HOAs stories, we can touch on that. But we already have a plan for a hiring episode soon. Stay tuned!
I had a robbery in Vegas several years ago - WHILE WE WERE SLEEPING UPSTAIRS The only thing that I think they took were the keys to my car. When i came downstairs in the morning, the door to the garage was propped open with an empty box and the garage door was open. My fault for a) not checking if the garage door was fully down and b) not locking the door to the garage at night. I am convinced that waking up interrupted them and they left in a hurry. Cops came but really did nothing -- i think because I had touched some areas. Car was found about a week later; across the city, drivers side window was smashed with a rock. They left "stuff" in the trunk... not sure if this was their stuff or stuff from other places/cars. I dropped that off with the cops and that was the last that I had heard about it. Insurance wrote off the car...
I remember my dads business being robbed and my brothers sitting with guns watching for them to return. It was in the mid seventies during the oil embargo. I was 12 yrs old and scared!, watched to the end 🙂🙂
as an IT professional work life balance i agree that sometimes i have to work late and upgrade stuff after hours so users can work in the morning. sometimes i have to work over the weekend for the same reason. but assuming im running the IT department properly those shouldnt be super common, and if stuff is running well there should be plenty of downtime during the periods where we arnt doing upgrades.
RIP Scale. I hope you can recover some of your stolen items. Having your house burglarized is so violating. Work life balance is such a misleading phrase. I have yet to have a good balance. Its always more one than the other. I think you are right that its not about a day, week, or month. The balance is probably on a longer timeline.
Regarding the Viking funeral. Speaking as a person who is living within 5 miles of nearest (highly likely) Viking graves, have you built the Viking ship yet? Apparently Viking funerals would also include ornate, rare things. Like things from halfway around the world. Oh, the reason they are highly likely are that they are unnatural "bumps" in the terrain, with the reason for not excavating being ungodly expensive. Rough estimate being a bunch of people digging with brushes with masters and whatnot. Median income a year is probably 52 000 USD for a normal job. Good job Universal! Regarding robbery and at the moment, more protective equipment. There are quite a few experts on TH-cam on locks and I bet other security related things you can look at if you want to increase home security without getting into guns. There are also security specialists who are for hire for stuff like this. What you want is likely a blue team. Blue is protection and red is for penetration testing or more precisely what Red Team Alliance by Deviant Ollam is. Regarding topics. Want to comment on Honey, if only for greater traction on TH-cam?
Oh my goodness! What an ordeal you went through with the robbery. I'm sorry that happened. As for work/life balance, I've found as a mom that I can "have it all" but not all at the same time. My question for you two: what are your favorite date night spots?
I have low blood sugar often and make new sayings or get them wrong some family favourites are "it's not lying if it's the truth" after I said I couldn't take part in a family sport bc i needed to drink some juice and "why the wide face" it's meant to be long idk what i was thinking but they still haunt me almost a decade later😂
Thanks for the advise, I guess Jim works but call me Will. And for my second question I get different answers from people but what type of law do you recommend getting into?
Here’s one Ashley can file for future use, when acknowledging someone else’s point: “I see!” said the blind man to the deaf man. (That’s been a repeat quip in our house for at least a generation)
Love your video. Heres a few things im interesting in hearing about if you are comfortable sharing: How did you both meet? Why personal injury law?Mike, If you werent a personal injury lawyer, what other type of law would you like to pursue? Ashley, i believe you said you were currently a stay at home mom. Would you go back to teaching when your childrenare older?
I totally have been broken into and is sooo violating. We knew people were scoping the area, but they broke in to our cars then a month later our storage units. I was scared that our house were next because we had slide doors in the back...and the neighbours tore the fence down right after the robberies. What I wanted to comment was I was afraid of the podcast, beacuse spouses are just not as good as youtubers. Your wife is so nice she overshadows you. :D Maybe have an episode where she gets to soley talk about her interests without your input and you comment on it out of blind. Kind of the flip on how the lawyer is effected by the teacher. Maybe for womens day or Mothers day episode.
I, too, am a workaholic...... I believe instead of work:life balance, I strive for work:life integration. Instead of carving out work and home time, for me the two need to synergistically commingle. Just as I am a mom, wife, daughter, and so on all the time, I am also a professional all the time. Just as I need to answer personal calls, go to the dentist, etc. during "work hours", I need to answer business calls, respond to emails/texts, and research work-related things during home-time. Somedays are more wore, some days are more home/family.... It will never be balanced. Work:life integration..... not balance
Burglary story was kinda scary. I think the scariest thing happened in my neighborhood was someone stole from our when we left money on the hood unlocked
Would love to know what your thought process is for bringing a new partner onboard and what that entails... does someone become a partner outright or do you want them to work for you, see their work then they become partner? When do you feel the need for a new partner? Is it based on case load, a talent you don't want to let go, something else?
Mike, visiting the suspect isn't a good idea. Doing so will inject you into his world in a way that could backfire. He could see it as an attack, and it could result in unintended consequences that put you and your family at risk from people who are not currently in custody. Your property is just stuff; returning it will not cure your feeling of violation.
I'd like to hear more about what your wife does for a living or what she use to do. Please respond only if your in the bathroom or enjoying a cigar! P.s. Great videos, cheers!
mike question for you... im assuming there is a fair amount of confidential material tied to your work do you ever struggle with not being able to accurately convey your troubles to loved ones?
I greatly enjoyed the show. I want that to be said first and foremost. Sorry to hear about Scale. Did you see my comment weeks ago that it sounded like Fin (Or Scale) might have ick? If so, did it turn out to be that? Sorry to hear about the robbery. At the same time, (and please don't take this too much to heart) it felt like a The 1%, First World problem. You're talking about a robbery and grousing about a watch collection. You mention things really get serious when a "certain someone" in the neighborhood gets robbed and now the police are getting more serious about finding the guys. (Also have to wonder if they were doing the data search BEFORE or AFTER you mentioned it in the meeting.) And then this guy gets no bail for his 4th arrest but like you said, some guy with 42 arrests caught with a shotgun gets something like bail of $4K. It just blows my mind that there is two separate legal systems, regardless of what folks of the 1% will say. Oh well, I digress. Talking to the guy: would it be possible for Mike to speak with him IF Mike had ANOTHER lawyer with him who is not tied to the case? Essentially a third party? Could Mike send the guy a letter beforehand asking to meet with him for the specific reason of asking, "Where's my stuff? If you tell me where it is so I can get it back, I will pay you money for your troubles."? Surely there has to be a way to ethically do this. Kids and the pull up bar: Mike needs to chill. They're kids. Their bones are like rubber at that age. I understand where he's coming from being a personal injury lawyer but you're just putting too much stress on yourself. If they fall wrong, they'll get hurt but it won't require a trip to the hospital. It's not like she's kicking flips on a skateboard in a concrete skate park and wearing no protection. Anyway, I see a wall of text so I'll stop.
We did see your comment about scale possibly having ICK. We think that was it as well. We ordered him some medication and I really think that helped him hang on a little bit longer. Unfortunately I think he was just too sick. Thank you so much for the suggestion. The comments were so helpful.
@@AshleyRafi I wasn't planning to comment anymore on this but as I was making tea, a thought occurred to me that y'all might find yourself in a similar situation as me, that being your kids getting interested in fish and aquariums to the point that 30+ years later (like me) you now have a 125 gallon tank with a community of critters. If that's the case, I recommend y'all keep around a 2-5 gallon tank that can be quickly set up as a "hospital tank" for future sick fish. Also would refer you to a book called The Complete Idiot's Guide to Freshwater Aquariums by Mike Wickham. We got into it when Eldest "won" a goldfish at a fair (do not recommend) and over the decades I've gotten into liking having a large tank as "wall scenery." (It sits next to my desktop to separate me from the dining room.)
Just a piece of advice with just a little bit of video editing you could have duplicated the left channel audio into the right channel audio. @@MikeRafiLawyer
Normally with robberies I think, "Oh these are stupid kids being opportunists". The fact that they removed pictures from the wall to look for safes is absolutely terrifying.
The Blind Leading the Deaf 100% IS an idiom/saying... ive never heard blind leading blind... is she confusing the saying "In a world of the blind, the one eyed man is king"?
It is blind leading the blind... Google it, it autopopulates in the search. We are all good.😂 the whole point is the person who doesn't know is teaching the skill, not the person who figured out skill but otherwise rookie is teaching.
Hey, very fair question - thanks for asking. It’s extremely rewarding. It has challenges, requires patience, and giving love even when it’s tough, and I’d imagine if you were a fly on the wall in our house, you wouldn’t be able to tell who is “mine” and who isn’t. Every relationship is different, and maybe(?) I had a leg up because my “dad” is my step dad, but there’s no magic answer. We will talk about it in an upcoming podcast - give us a few weeks and stay tuned! Again, appreciate the question and good luck!!!
I actually heard of robbers assuming that parents hid safes in kid rooms because "no one would think of going in there" . I think these robbers were trying to avoid the claim that they had effect on the children.
@@diug1931 I think they just had a high speed low drag plan of being in the homes for less than the police response times. I guess if you want to go sneaky you put the safe under your shed you put the lawn care stuff inside

Work:life integration..... not balance

"Scale passed away"
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Burglary story was kinda scary. I think the scariest thing happened in my neighborhood was someone stole from our when we left money on the hood unlocked
Would love to know what your thought process is for bringing a new partner onboard and what that entails... does someone become a partner outright or do you want them to work for you, see their work then they become partner? When do you feel the need for a new partner? Is it based on case load, a talent you don't want to let go, something else?
This is a really good question. Give me a few weeks and we will talk about this. Great idea!
We will have to do an about Ashley episode. I’m sure she’ll hate talking about herself…
And I followed your rule in respond. You’re welcome.
@@MikeRafiLawyer hmmmmm. Now we are all left wondering which rule you followed. Cigars or bathroom?
Bathroom at a cigar shop. Boom.

So they had the license plate of the car, home address, and pictures of the guys and couldn't make an arrest for 2 months?
Poor scale. We are the support group
mike question for you... im assuming there is a fair amount of confidential material tied to your work do you ever struggle with not being able to accurately convey your troubles to loved ones?
All the time.
You two seem very sweet ❤
1 of us for sure.
Great podcast, just a small thing near the end the audio for mike goes just into the left ear idk why but just so you're aware.
… our way of preventing you from hearing dogs barking.
@@MikeRafiLawyer Fair enough just wanted to mention it incase you were unaware
No problem, unless you anger the guy and he escalates and starts targeting you when he gets out of Jail.
I feel like these guys should get more time for every piece of property that doesn't get returned to the rightful owner.
Blind leading the deaf... a Rafi-ism! Also now that Scale has passed the right thing needs to be done eventually... new fish, named Head.
Get a Lorex camera system. Their audio and video is unmatched!
These guys sounded like they were following Larry Lawton back in the day
I greatly enjoyed the show.
We got into it when Eldest "won" a goldfish at a fair (do not recommend) and over the decades I've gotten into liking having a large tank as "wall scenery." (It sits next to my desktop to separate me from the dining room.)
did you get a prenup? why? why not?
Where's episode 6 to 55? Why did they skip directly to 56?
I can’t believe you missed 51 episodes…

We are going to cover hiring people in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
Mike's audio got messed up in the last 5 minutes. My left ear enjoyed what he had to say
Just trying to prevent you from hearing barking for four minutes in your right ear. Sorry!
Just a piece of advice with just a little bit of video editing you could have duplicated the left channel audio into the right channel audio. @@MikeRafiLawyer
Y'all are very kilig in my opinion
sparkles = fingerprint dust
Normally with robberies I think, "Oh these are stupid kids being opportunists". The fact that they removed pictures from the wall to look for safes is absolutely terrifying.
They took photos of licenses plates weeks before they ever decided to rob people’s houses. They should be NFL scouts.
Poor Scale 😂
when is SCALES zoom funeral?
Don't do it. Listing to your wife this is important. Lit would be possible coule, cross with the board of ethics.
I just watched the likes go up by more than 90.
by the way, that must've been a visual glitch.
The Blind Leading the Deaf 100% IS an idiom/saying... ive never heard blind leading blind... is she confusing the saying "In a world of the blind, the one eyed man is king"?
After much research… and disappointment… the blind leading the deaf maybe me a saying, but it’s wrong lol.
@ that is wild… I’ve always heard it blind/deaf…. At least you aren’t alone lol
It is blind leading the blind... Google it, it autopopulates in the search. We are all good.😂 the whole point is the person who doesn't know is teaching the skill, not the person who figured out skill but otherwise rookie is teaching.
Can y’all talk about Ashley’s baby daddy? Where is he? Is he involved in the girls life?
That sounds really personal and invasive.
@ they said to ask questions. That’s one of mine. I’m going to be a step mom and I wanna know how their co parenting works.
@@MikeRafiLawyer thanks. You’re the best. Keep up the good work. ❤️
Mike swearing (well, saying sh!t) so much in this episode dosen't match with my mental picture of him

The later in the day we make videos… the more cursing there is. This is why we don’t make videos at night!
Have you ever watched his shorts? It totally tracks.
That's why he's so beloved. Lol

Takeaway floor safe in kids room
I actually heard of robbers assuming that parents hid safes in kid rooms because "no one would think of going in there" . I think these robbers were trying to avoid the claim that they had effect on the children.
@@diug1931 I think they just had a high speed low drag plan of being in the homes for less than the police response times. I guess if you want to go sneaky you put the safe under your shed you put the lawn care stuff inside
Stop talking about them getting hurt!!! That's bad juju
