Love this, I hate loose dogs on the walks, 'cause normally the people who let them loose, cant call them back. We got a 9 year old landseer who will not take any crap from dogs in her space. She is allways on leash, if we are not alone or with dogs she knows, but when dogs in running to her face, it is allways "the big dog"s fault 🙄. Hate it. She is a sweatheart and we can take her anywhere, but will not punish her for other dogs treating her with no respect.

I’m getting a leash sleeve for one of my dogs that says “Ask Owner Before Allowing Dog Greeting” because my dog is dog selective and we keep her on leash at all times when we’re out to keep her nose out of trouble. I hope people will be better about asking us before allowing their dog to greet mine with this sleeve

I have taught my Assistance dog to go between ,my legs in a down whilst I deal with charging dogs. So many people don't seem to want to train their dogs these days. Makes me sad.
Regards dogs that hate claw clippers, like mine. Train them to sand paper ( 80 grade ) this is usually a noise sensitivity. Don't force claw clippers on these sensitive dogs. My girl would rather dislocate her shoulder then have claws clipped but tolerates sand paper. Yep, agreed, you MUST structure your dogs not pity them. Pity helps no one at all. Great video Tom , thank you : )

@@angrytrees7519 I have no choice! I bring out the sandpaper board frequently so he uses it like a game at least for a few minutes! You can see the tips get flattened from clawing at the sand paper!
I used to be able to use nail clippers up to almost one year of age when the light bulb went off in his brain...."hell no, you're not going to clip my nails".... I cannot even wrap a small piece of sand paper around my finger without him showing teeth and growling, yet HE can put his dew claws in his mouth and bite the tips off! I couldn't even turn on the "dog dremel" tool which makes a quiet buzzing sound .....so if y'all can trim them, I'd do one claw per week just to get or keep them used to it!

Thanks for the tips. Me and my GSD were walking in our neighbourhood and a Chihuahua came out of nowhere (without the owner) and attacked mine. Was alone and the only thing that helped was throwing my keys at it (couldn’t let go of mine, would have been hit by a car).... I’m still training mine when walking off leash. Another dog is coming? I put a leash on mine, too (She the type that wants to play with everyone and greet everyone. So we’re still training the coming back and other commands.) I just know the feeling, when my dog is leashed and another one can’t behave... It’s very sad...

G'day Tom, when I was volunteering in AZ one of the German shepherds had a habit of nipping at you every time you came in the front door. There was a spray bottle by the door you could pick up and just point it at her or give her a spray of water if she didn't back off, it worked a treat, I wonder if that could be applied when you are walking your dog and another dog off lead approaches, give them a spray of water. I'm not happy today, Sunday here in Australia as I was meant to meet my rescued German Shepherd but I'm in forced isolation until Thursday. I was on a flight with infected Coronavirus passengers. I have no symptoms thank goodness, so I will meet my German Shepherd on Friday now as my isolation period finishes on Thursday and hopefully begin the adoption process. She is a beautiful 2 and a half-year-old girl. Lakota is super, super smart. I love her and seeing her in your videos.

Question! Did you ever do purely positive? If you did, why did you change? Around here people are solely "positive based, force free" if I have the nerve to mention I am a balanced trainer I usually get a lot of "oh, well I'm "science based" or that I am not creative enough. I do positive training for a lot of my training, but the use of tools, time outs, etc has been invaluable in some cases, plus I would rather know how to use the tools right and not harm the dog then fail and have people try tools wrong and they do cause harm.

I always try explaining it with kids. If you just say "nice!" When your child is tidying up, but otherwise you ignore it, the child's room will always be chaotic. Most people get it, when not... well then they are lost.

Hi Amber, I seen your comment and this is a topic I feel very passionate about. The reason being is because a couple years ago I tried to help a friend of a friend who had 2 days to find a new home with his human aggressive pit bull. He didn't wait to seek out help for his pit, he sought the help of a positive only trainer which in the owners opinion did nothing to help his dog, in fact, the dog got even worse after spending over one thousand dollars later and sadly, the dog was euthanized. So I truly believe he too would tell anyone using force free training that it doesn't work. His dog paid the ultimate price for it.
No disrespect to Tom, because I think Tom is great, however, I found an amazing video on WHY Positive only training doesn't work. Maybe Tom has one that I haven't seen, if so, I apologize, but look on TH-cam for a video put out by Robert Cabral. Although I agree with everything Tom says and does, I think Robert is good too but I don't agree with everything Robert says. However, this video should be watched by every single dog owner! It clearly spells out why force free (positive only) training doesn't work! It is titled "Dog Aggression and Positive ONLY Training - Robert Cabral Dog Training Video".
Honestly Amber, I think you have a far better understanding of dog behavior than the people pointing fingers saying ridiculous things like "your not creative enough". These people truly lack the knowledge of true dog behavior. Right from birth the mother applies rules and has consequences for not following the rules. She applies physical touch, she will use her energy and body language to tell the pup what is expected. For the life of me, I don't understand how people can see this any different. I am all for positive training, but there are times where it isn't enough!
PS Tom, if you have a video on why positive only dog training doesn't work, I would love to know about it. I think you are fantastic in every way shape and form when it comes to dogs. You are the best!

My Swedish Vallhund was attacked while we were walking on leash in our neighbourhood. A pit mix came running out of an open garage, grabbed him and tried to run off. My husband tackled the dog and tried a few "tricks" to get it to let go, the only thing that worked was repeatedly twisting the dogs penis until it dropped my dog. The whole time I was restraining my 2 great danes from getting involved. It was terrifying

A black lab came in hackles up and at first my dog barked at him in a playful manner. The lab stood his ground and Karr (rotti) went from a playful bark to an aggressive bark and instantly wanted to fight. I walk over put the leash on him and walked away from everything. Hey there, we are reaching out to you as new owners of two, twelve week old, Chihuahua puppies. We have had our dogs for four weeks now. One of them is always excited and wanting to play. He is super fun and extremely loving toward us. The only issue when him, is that he is extremely needy. He cries unless he is around us constantly. He does not like to be left alone, at all. He will cry and cry and cry non stop until you attend to him or until you leave the house. How can we reduce the crying when we are not attending to the dog’s needs? His little brother is a totally different ’ball of wax’. Baby brother is more of a loner. Sure he likes to be loved too but not constantly. He is fine on his own or he is fine with us (and he too is super fun when he is with us) or he is fine with his brother. He is a slower learner which is okay but our issue with him is that he cries ’like his leg is broken’ whenever you try to pick him up. He gets unnecessary nervous and is very timid just when being picked up, again, yelping ’like his leg is broken’, just because he does not want to be removed from wherever he currently is. Once he is picked up he is fine and he acts as if his drama about being moved was no big deal. Baby brother will sometimes try to bite us in order to remain in his current position. This is our main concern!! Can you help? Any advice, on either scenario, to reduce the anxiety for our two little ones would be much appreciated. We are hoping you have some good ideas. Thank you and good day.

I would have high value treats your dog likes and as often as you can, in as many situations as you can, give these high value treats to people and strangers and have them give your dog treats, but only if the dog is calm and not all stressed out. Changing the association your dog has with ppl should help. Your dog will most certainly feed off of your energy around others. So be aware of how you are feeling and work on being calm, confident, relaxed, assertive. That will help your dog. I love the analogy that if you had to jump from an airplane, which person are you likely to take instruction from and follow? The confident person who is calm, knowledgeable and confident or the person who is nervous and unsure of themselves? I do agree with Tom though, even if you do everything to help your dog and it doesn't work, it's ok. The only time I don't feel it's ok is if they are living in constant fear, that is no way to live. If that is the case, then you should do all you can to find the help you need, for your dogs sake. Last but not least, Bless your heart Olivia Pereira for adding a dog with a difficult thing to fix, to your family! You must have a big heart!

    • @Flippokid
      @Flippokid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Those are very normal play-behaviors. Barking in play usually means "hurry up" or "what do I have to do to get the ball/tug." Growling is very common in tug, and it doesn't mean your dog is aggressive. But it can mean that your dog is trying to resource guard, and there are a couple ways to tell.
Firstly, does he growl when you get close to the toy? Does he pull up his lip, showing his teeth? Does he try to block your access to the toy with his body? Is he stiffening up, or raising the hairs on his back, watching your every move? Those are all signs he's getting aggressive over the toy. He doesn't need to show all of these.
But if he only growls during tug, and not showing any of the other signs, it's playful. You can growl back, and get him extra excited for the game. (I usually initiate growling, then my doggo knows it's cool to growl too) It's like trash-talking between to friendly opponents.

I have 2 German shepherds. Brother and sister from the same litter. I have watched and reviewed your channel for months.
    We need help.
They are truly sweet souls. 8.19.16 is their birthday. He seems to have fear aggression from my ex husband? We've tried to overcome it, but he is not tolerant of most other people. Even my oldest son (30yrs old) but is SO protective of his 21 month old daughter.
The two together. He's the mouthpiece. And is in full-on "I'm going to kill you" to other dogs, as he's wagging his tail. And she is super hyper and takes the award for best supporting actress. She definitely has "his back" in any situation. Very pack mentality. We have worked on thanking them for doing their job when seeing strangers or other dogs. And them telling them to shut their pie hole.
They understand sit, lay, "wait for it" when being given food, take treats delicately from our mouth.
She is fixed. He is intact. The vet refused to neuter him because hes "too aggressive".
I would just love to have you see these two, and teach us how to be better, for them. We dont know what we dont know when it comes to helping them be the best doggos they can be.

Vanessa Alexander Remember, training any animal is a process, not an event. It can take years to work with a dog & get the product you want. Study animal (dog) behavior, educate yourself more on training by watching videos & doing research & apply that to your methods. All love

I am so confused how to train with a toy...any videos on that? My BC pup is not food-motivated when training. Does anyone know any good tips or videos on training with toys. He does love my verbal praise but other times, he is so stimulated just by smelling sometimes he will straight ignore me. Yet, he follows me EVERYWHERE in the house and if I am out of his sight outside he will stop and look for me.

When I take my dog to the dog park he always acts friendly behind on the other side of the fence and when he's in the park on the leash but he gets off leash and decides hes gonna bully the male dogs that are bigger than him not as much when there smaller and he gets along great with female dogs but he gets off leash and starts out fine (usually) then plays for a few minutes then starts a fight unless the dog submits and dosnt fight back do you got any advice.

Don’t take it to a dog park 🤦🏻‍♂️ if your dog is pick and choose with dogs there is a chance the dog is aggressive. Try training the dog to exist around other dogs not necessarily interact

Keep it on a 30 ft long line for a bit and walk the outside perimeter of dog park...correct at first sign of dominance/bullshit/reactivity...this is NOT okay. Do this and CORRECT....praise and get the dog back in pack mode...have him work for you for a minute..sit, down, etc.....try again! The dog must know YES/NO! Start inside as well......he will meet the wrong dog one day and it wont be good....id release my dog to drop him and smarten him up! This is your responsibility before your dog gets beat down. Just being honest! You MUST correct this before you get sued or your dog gets hurt! I would not let another dog do this to my dog...I would tell the dog NO and walk through his shoulders...then, if he did it again, my dog would be released to smarten it up a bit...in dog language.

hi tom...this. has nothing to do with the subject, but i just want to let everyone know not to let anyone pet their dog during this quarantine. my dog is very friendly and when she's out, everyone that walks by stops to pet her, so i'm keeping her in and letting her go potty on a pee pad. she's very good about it. i know she can't get the virus, but if someone has it that pets her, i don't want her passing it on to me. am i just paranoid or is it possible for this to happen?

I have a similar situation with our gsd - lots of training and socialization, but still reactive on leash. I use the touch command or "watch me", leave it or change of gait to change my dogs mindset. She'll get focused on approaching dog, but if I give her a job, we're more likely to get through it. ..good luck

Dont let people touch her when you walk her. I think keeping her inside all the time & not petting her is a bit of an overreaction

He has a video on it! But basically he said he likes the idea of dog parks but it comes down to the people that go there. A lot don’t clean up after their dogs or responsibility watch and monitor their dog(s) and their behaviors.

Most people shouldn't be allowed to have guard dogs, pitties, etc. because they don't have the firmness, patience and persistence to socialize them properly---if they can be socialized. Such people are pigheaded so it is hard to get them to follow instructions and it is hard to shame them. Mix these people with guard dogs and disaster is sure to follow.

It bothers me that the “Doggie Don’t” you mentioned is advertised as a TRAINING device instead of a deterrent device for dogs that won’t keep distance. This seems to go very much against your training philosophy.
