    There aren't two wrestlers in the business today that can put on a match like the Sawyer\Hart match, and there is no announcer in the business today who can call the match like Solie did. This was a time when wrestlers tried to make their matches look 'real'. Now they're only concerned with making them look 'cool'. This is so much better than anything that's aired on a wrestling program in many, many years.

      It also helps when you have 2 Competitors who have learned some of the basics from Free Style Wrestling and Greco-Roman Wrestling. As you say a lot of today's Wrestlers have set the basics aside for Showmanship and Entertainment.

      I was not aware of that. Where and when was this?

    • @CaptainVelveeta
      @CaptainVelveeta 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was NWA Georgia Championship Wrestling...same time period...just a couple of years before this video. I've tried to find pics of him with a mask but, so far, to no avail He did publish a book a while back where he talked about wearing a mask though...here's an excerpt:
      Excerpt from Chapter 8: Black Atlas
      Copyright © Tony White and Scott Teal
      Wearing the mask and protecting my identity took some getting used to. Wearing a mask was second nature to wrestlers like Mil Mascaras and Mr. Wrestling #2, who wore their masks all the time, even in the dressing rooms when they were only around the boys. I had a harder time remembering the things a masked man needed to remember.
      For instance, Tommy Rich tells a story about stopping to pick me up at my motel. When he pulled up in front of my room, a girl walked out wearing a red mask. Right behind her was a girl wearing a blue mask, followed by another girl wearing a black mask. I walked out next … but I wasn’t wearing a mask. The boys spread that story around for a long time.
      Before I went to Atlanta, I had a "Tony Atlas" t-shirt made with my barefaced photograph emblazoned on the front. I remembered to wear my mask into the arena … but I also wore the t-shirt. Paul Jones will never let me live down that one.

    This is quite the fascinating show. Early Bret, early Hogan, and what on earth is with Hansen and Ole Anderson being seemingly the top faces in the company alongside Tommy Rich? It's almost like a situation where "Dirty White Boy" Tony Anthony was a top face in SMW. It might not be the heroes you want in an ideal world, but when going against the nefarious likes of the Heenan Family it's the heroes you need!

      Brian Paige Ole and Stan went back and forth heel and face in Georgia. Actually I think this is prior to Ole"s big heel turn on Dusty Rhodes that is to this day recognized as one of the greatest stories in wrestling history. I mean it is above the Hogan NWO turn and the Horsemen formation Flair's turn

      @@franksullivan7747 Yep. Ole's Heel Turn came in Early August 1980. The Wrestling Fans International Association (WFIA) Convention was held the weekend of the Big Turn. Jim Cornette (then a key WFIA member who was in charge of the programs and promo photos for Jerry Jarrett in Memphis) had a press pass to take pictures of the "Other" Main Event (Harley Race vs. Tommy Rich for the NWA title) but had color film, which was hard to use for a cage match, so he was in the stands when it all went down.

    • @willnchicago696
      @willnchicago696 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gordon didn’t do them all at the same time.
      He did Georgia and Florida for years. By the time he started doing Continental though, he was no longer doing Georgia.

    • @garyrasberryjr.552
      @garyrasberryjr.552 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@willnchicago696 Yep. He was doing Florida and Georgia at this time. Gordon didn't start in Continental until 1985 when Ron Fuller tried to make it more of a national company by dropping the "Southeastern" moniker.
      He worked sparingly in Mid-Atlantic. He went up when the Crocketts started the Starrcades because they wanted him and Bob Caudle to call the matches. That's why Kevin Sullivan, Mike Davis, Mark Lewin and Mike Graham worked in the first couple Starrcades.
      Of interest, the early promotional material for Starrcade 83 had Hulk Hogan teaming with Wahoo McDaniel against Dick Slater and Bob Orton, but somehow dropped out (either because of Verne finally saying he'd put the belt on him or Vince Jr. making a deal to set up the Christmas Day departure)

    I began watching wrestling in 1982 at the young age of just 4. I was hooked not just WWF which was I mostly watched but Georgia Championship Wrestling, Championship Wrestling from Florida, AWA, Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, Mid South Wrestling, St Louis Wrestling, Memphis Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling, WCW and ECW among everything else I could catch. I do feel Vince McMahon ruined traditional wrestling, he didn't have to declare war on every single promotion in the country to achieve stardom. He could have respected the old rules like recognizing the NWA championship, sharing talent and not stepping into other promoters territories without permission and still achieve what he wanted. No wonder my grandfather hated him and stopped watching wrestling. I remember my grandfather saying the NWA was a real man's wrestling promotion
