There is nothing quite as grand and awe inspiring as "tall ships", we were lucky to be in Madeira during the 500th year anniversary celebrations and during a visit by the Portuguese navy complete with two tall ships. Happy memories, thank you for sharing. Edit: Afterthought; 33:51 can we all take a moment to remember and pay homage to the men who set sail nearly 600 years ago in those Caravels to explore the seas during the Age of Discovery. No reliable charts and modern aids like GPS not even imagined.
Tall ships are indeed impressive, Gerry! 🙂 Those 15th century sailors didn't have GPS but they had something "almost" as good: the mariner's astrolabe, also called sea astrolabe, invented and perfect by Portuguese navigators. It was used to determine the latitude of a ship at sea by measuring the sun's noon altitude (declination) or the meridian altitude of a star of known declination. It was an impressive gadget for the time.

O barco mexicano era lindo, a tripulação muito simpática e prestável também. 😊 Sim, parece impensável como os marinheiros iam rumo ao oceano desconhecido, em caravelas de aspeto frágil, percorrendo milhares e milhares de km sem saberem se iriam chegar a algum lugar... Yes, it must have a been a huge relief to enter the calm water of the Tejo after crossing the Atlantic, or returning from the dangerous African waters. 🙂 The Cape of Good Hope, in South Africa, was a particularly difficult cape to navigate. About 3000 ships have sunken at the Cape of Good Hope. Have a great week!

Beside the obvious beauty and grandeur of these tall ships, I see two things: First, it's quite obvious where the phrase "showing someone the ropes" originated, and second, I'm VERY glad this skill set is being kept alive, in the foreseeable future it may become vital to our survival.
Thank you for the interesting video. You may already know the story, but I’ll mention it, just in case you don’t. Moctezuma was the Emperor of the Aztec when Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes first arrived in Tenochtitlan (today’s Mexico City). How Emperor Moctezuma died is not clear. Some say Cortes had him killed and others say one of Moctezuma’s own people threw a large stone that hit Moctezuma on the head and killed him. Upon his death, Moctezuma was immediately replaced by his brother, Cuitláhuac. But Cuitláhuac died of smallpox 80 days later and was replaced as Aztec Emperor by Cuauhtémoc. Legend has it that Emperor Moctezuma had attempted to calm down Aztec anger and rebellion against Cortes and that Cuauhtémoc publicly accused Moctezuma of being “Cortes’ men’s woman” for wanting to surrender the Aztec Empire to the Spanish, and that Cuauhtémoc’s accusation caused someone in the crowd to throw the stone that killed Moctezuma. Legend also has it that Cortes tortured Cuauhtémoc to get him to confess where the Aztec had hidden their gold by placing his feet (and perhaps his hands) in burning oil, and that in response Cuauhtémoc lied to Cortes, who later had Cuauhtémoc hanged. By contrast, in Mexico, the country where my parents and my four oldest siblings were born, culture is experienced with all of the five senses. Portugal sempre participa da regata, como um dos pontos de parada? Foi só este ano que não participou oficialmente com um navio? Ouvi dizer que há um movimento para "cancelar" as grandes navegações, é verdade? Se for, é um dos maiores absurdos que eu já ouvi recentemente! Olá Maria! 😀 Eu também queria ver as velas do navio mexicano cairem, mas parei de gravar, esperei, esperei, esperei e o que penso que estavam a fazer era o oposto... Posso estar enganado, mas pareceu-me que estavam a prender ainda mais as velas. Desisti de esperar. 😅 Sim, a arrumação e organização no interior dos navios era impecável! Na verdade a Nau Quinhentista de Vila do Conde é uns 3-4 metros mais comprida que a Vera Cruz, mas esta última tem construção mais semelhante às dos séculos 15/16. A previsão era que a Sagres chegasse no domingo, ainda a tempo de participar no desfile final rumo a Espanha. Mas nem sei se conseguiu, ontem choveu e não fui assistir (ou filmar) o desfile. 😅 Não, as regatas Tall Ships nem sempre passam por Portugal, mas quando o fazem quase sempre param em Lisboa. Vai haver uma ainda este ano no norte da Europa. Quando há navios portugueses é sempre a Sagres ou o Creoula, um navio ligeiramente mais pequeno, utilizado nas pescas de bacalhau na Gronelândia, até aos anos 70. Eu penso que isso de cancelar as grandes navegações refere-se aos modernos navios de cruzeiros com gigantescos motores a diesel, que são imensamente poluidores... 🤔 Abraços e uma ótima semana! Oh Miguel!! Obrigada! This is amazing! As naves altas são absolutamente magníficas, enquanto navegam pelas águas. A minha mãe adorava as naves altas e passou-me esse amor. I must admit, I do have a thing for Mexican Folk music. Beautiful ship. My grandfather was a merchant marine in England and apparently he ran guns for the Spanish Armada. He died years before I was born. My Mum grew up on the English Channel, and was in Sea Rangers… a sort of Girl Guides on ships. You mentioned that the 1956 race started in Torquay… that is where Mum grew up. She lived in Brixham, in Torbay and took the train to school in Torquay. I’ve also got two Uncles who were sailors. Mum’s eldest brother ended up in Halifax as Commandant at Stadacona, the large Naval Base there, and he was Captain of Canada’s largest Naval ship (when he was still an officer, before he retired… and one of her other brothers also joined the Navy but on Canada’s West Coast and when he left the Navy he ran the B.C. Ferries. There is much seafaring in the blood. I would love to sail on a tall ship! Growing up, The Bluenose was Canada’s best known tall ship but we have many.

@@POVTours Bom dia Miguel, Suponho que tens razão, mais ou menos. Fui adotado, mas de alguma forma... mesmo que não geneticamente... o amor da minha mãe por navios, velas e mares foi adotado por mim. No porto de Brixham, há uma réplica do Golden Hind. (Parece-se um pouco com a Caravela). Pelo que sei, pertenceu a Sir Francis Drake, o primeiro inglês a circum-navegar o globo, em 1577. Atualmente, é um museu... divertido de visitar. Adoro este tipo de coisas! Quando era adolescente, visitava o meu tio em Halifax nos Verões e podia visitar os enormes navios. Uma vez, ele levou-me a mim e à minha mãe ao porto de Halifax, num submarino. Como provavelmente sabe, Ottawa não tem acesso ao mar... está localizada onde 3 grandes rios se encontram, no entanto, estamos a 8-9 horas de carro do Atlântico, se for através dos EUA... (São 2 dias de carro até à Nova Escócia). Mudar-me para viver a uma curta distância do oceano é o meu sonho. Mal posso esperar! Para mim, é um sonho poder pegar no carro e visitar navios como este sempre que quiser. Atouguia não fica longe do Porto de Lisboa, de todo! ;) É pena que o NRP Sagres não tenha podido vir... Espero certamente visitá-la um dia. É uma beleza!!! Todos eles são. Há uns meses atrás vi umas imagens antigas (no TH-cam) da Frota Branca, os navios e tripulantes que iam à Terra Nova pescar, durante meses, e traziam o peixe de volta para Portugal. Em 1998, a CBC fez um documentário sobre a viagem do Creoula, o navio da Frota Branca, de Portugal para Saint John's, que transportava um grupo seleto de jovens marinheiros de todo o mundo (se não me falha a memória). Foi muito comovente ver isto. O amor entre os portugueses e os habitantes da Terra Nova é tão evidente. Muitos pescadores portugueses conheceram e casaram com raparigas canadianas e estabeleceram-se no Canadá. O avô da mãe da minha melhor amiga era um desses homens! Mais uma vez, Miguel, obrigada por este excelente vídeo! Adorei-o muito! p.s. Navios incríveis. Parabéns a organização do evento, parabéns aos Marinheiros das tripulações, e principalmente um parabéns a todos os que ajudaram para que o evento acontecesse. PS.: Expulsar as pessoas do porto quando da saídas das embarcações do atracadouro e não permitir que delas pudessem ver o cortejo de saída das embarcações de Lisboa em direção ao Atlântico, deve ser revisto quanto ideia e a forma.

Boa tarde Miguel, ótimo vídeo deu para matar as saudades da minha vida de marinheiro ( 32 anos) aqui no Brasil, também temos um navio veleiro chamado Cisne Branco, que infelizmente não estava na regata deste ano, essas embarcações além de servirem para adestramento também são para exercer funções diplomáticas e relações públicas, visando representar o país em eventos náuticos ao redor do mundo. Eu particularmente não tive a oportunidade de servir neste tipo de embarcação, apenas em navio voltados para patrulha e em porta aviões. Miguel realmente sua vertigem lhe impediria de trabalhar no navio brasileiro, pois um dos requisitos é ter que subir no mastro principal e ficar um bom tempo no " caralho" mas em viagem com o navio ao sabor das ondas dos oceanos😂😂. @@POVTours I am certain that you would love Mexico. As someone who was born in the United States, I can tell you that, sadly, American culture constitutes “change for the sake of change”. By contrast, in Mexico, the country where my parents and my four oldest siblings were born, culture is experienced with all of the five senses. The attached video will give you some idea of what I mean by that, and it may turn out to be the lure that convinces you to finally visit Mexico. By the way, at minute 4:52 of the video you will see an older couple dancing the “danzón” that some time back I mentioned is very popular in the city of Veracruz, Veracruz. Olá Maria! 😀 Eu também queria ver as velas do navio mexicano cairem, mas parei de gravar, esperei, esperei, esperei e o que penso que estavam a fazer era o oposto... Posso estar enganado, mas pareceu-me que estavam a prender ainda mais as velas. Desisti de esperar. 😅
Sim, a arrumação e organização no interior dos navios era impecável!
Na verdade a Nau Quinhentista de Vila do Conde é uns 3-4 metros mais comprida que a Vera Cruz, mas esta última tem construção mais semelhante às dos séculos 15/16.
A previsão era que a Sagres chegasse no domingo, ainda a tempo de participar no desfile final rumo a Espanha. Mas nem sei se conseguiu, ontem choveu e não fui assistir (ou filmar) o desfile. 😅
Não, as regatas Tall Ships nem sempre passam por Portugal, mas quando o fazem quase sempre param em Lisboa. Vai haver uma ainda este ano no norte da Europa. Quando há navios portugueses é sempre a Sagres ou o Creoula, um navio ligeiramente mais pequeno, utilizado nas pescas de bacalhau na Gronelândia, até aos anos 70.
Eu penso que isso de cancelar as grandes navegações refere-se aos modernos navios de cruzeiros com gigantescos motores a diesel, que são imensamente poluidores... 🤔

I must admit, I do have a thing for Mexican Folk music. Beautiful ship.
My grandfather was a merchant marine in England and apparently he ran guns for the Spanish Armada. He died years before I was born. My Mum grew up on the English Channel, and was in Sea Rangers… a sort of Girl Guides on ships.
You mentioned that the 1956 race started in Torquay… that is where Mum grew up. She lived in Brixham, in Torbay and took the train to school in Torquay. I’ve also got two Uncles who were sailors. Mum’s eldest brother ended up in Halifax as Commandant at Stadacona, the large Naval Base there, and he was Captain of Canada’s largest Naval ship (when he was still an officer, before he retired… and one of her other brothers also joined the Navy but on Canada’s West Coast and when he left the Navy he ran the B.C. Ferries. There is much seafaring in the blood. I would love to sail on a tall ship! Growing up, The Bluenose was Canada’s best known tall ship but we have many.

Suponho que tens razão, mais ou menos. Fui adotado, mas de alguma forma... mesmo que não geneticamente... o amor da minha mãe por navios, velas e mares foi adotado por mim.
No porto de Brixham, há uma réplica do Golden Hind. (Parece-se um pouco com a Caravela). Pelo que sei, pertenceu a Sir Francis Drake, o primeiro inglês a circum-navegar o globo, em 1577. Atualmente, é um museu... divertido de visitar. Adoro este tipo de coisas!
Quando era adolescente, visitava o meu tio em Halifax nos Verões e podia visitar os enormes navios. Uma vez, ele levou-me a mim e à minha mãe ao porto de Halifax, num submarino.
Como provavelmente sabe, Ottawa não tem acesso ao mar... está localizada onde 3 grandes rios se encontram, no entanto, estamos a 8-9 horas de carro do Atlântico, se for através dos EUA... (São 2 dias de carro até à Nova Escócia). Mudar-me para viver a uma curta distância do oceano é o meu sonho. Mal posso esperar! Para mim, é um sonho poder pegar no carro e visitar navios como este sempre que quiser. Atouguia não fica longe do Porto de Lisboa, de todo! ;)
É pena que o NRP Sagres não tenha podido vir... Espero certamente visitá-la um dia. É uma beleza!!! Todos eles são.
Há uns meses atrás vi umas imagens antigas (no TH-cam) da Frota Branca, os navios e tripulantes que iam à Terra Nova pescar, durante meses, e traziam o peixe de volta para Portugal. Em 1998, a CBC fez um documentário sobre a viagem do Creoula, o navio da Frota Branca, de Portugal para Saint John's, que transportava um grupo seleto de jovens marinheiros de todo o mundo (se não me falha a memória). Foi muito comovente ver isto. O amor entre os portugueses e os habitantes da Terra Nova é tão evidente. Muitos pescadores portugueses conheceram e casaram com raparigas canadianas e estabeleceram-se no Canadá. O avô da mãe da minha melhor amiga era um desses homens!

Parabéns a organização do evento, parabéns aos Marinheiros das tripulações, e principalmente um parabéns a todos os que ajudaram para que o evento acontecesse.
PS.: Expulsar as pessoas do porto quando da saídas das embarcações do atracadouro e não permitir que delas pudessem ver o cortejo de saída das embarcações de Lisboa em direção ao Atlântico, deve ser revisto quanto ideia e a forma.

Boa tarde Miguel, ótimo vídeo deu para matar as saudades da minha vida de marinheiro ( 32 anos) aqui no Brasil, também temos um navio veleiro chamado Cisne Branco, que infelizmente não estava na regata deste ano, essas embarcações além de servirem para adestramento também são para exercer funções diplomáticas e relações públicas, visando representar o país em eventos náuticos ao redor do mundo. Eu particularmente não tive a oportunidade de servir neste tipo de embarcação, apenas em navio voltados para patrulha e em porta aviões. Miguel realmente sua vertigem lhe impediria de trabalhar no navio brasileiro, pois um dos requisitos é ter que subir no mastro principal e ficar um bom tempo no " caralho" mas em viagem com o navio ao sabor das ondas dos oceanos😂😂. Um abraço e uma ótima semana..🤝👍

Olá Helena. Eu realmente estou muito longe de ser especialista em Tall Ships Races, mas tentei dar algumas informações interessantes, usando as melhores fontes possíveis. As fontes de tudo o que está mencionado no vídeo são os sites da Sail Training International, e o site do evento criado pela APORVELA, a entidade que organizou a etapa de Lisboa.
O que é que está errado no vídeo?
E daí, é preciso um curso de engenheiro naval para fazer um vídeo de reportagem sobre barcos ?
