The six themes that have preview images are the ones included with Onion OS. The remaining themes without previews come from the TF Card(1) folder for the official firmware update. For some reason miyoo didn't include the preview.png file for those themes. You can either add your own preview.png (any image at 480 x 360 resolution) to the theme folder, or try to find a download that includes the preview. Most (but unfortunately not all) of them are on this page: github.com/jimgraygit/Onion/wiki/4.-Theme-Repository

Thanks for the tutorial. Question: If it's already on the last firmware version and I have a brand new SD card, which files/folders do I need to copy to the SD (apart from ".tmp_update")?
Out of all the videos I’ve watched this one is the most clear on everything! But it’s just missing one thing. I downloaded the roams to my computer. Some are zipped. Do I gottta unzip them before I drag them back into the new SD cars?
Hi there! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you found it helpful. Whether you leave it zipped or not depends on the emulator/system. Check this page for a list of systems and which file types are acceptable. If it says ".zip", ".7z" etc in the extensions list then you can leave them zipped. Otherwise you'll need to unzip them.
@@RetroBreezeYT so I installed onion OS plugged back in and it ran perfect. Went back put the system files in the bios added roms. All on a new SD card and when I turn it on it says onion OS but then the screen just stays lit up black! Won’t move from there. It lets me power it off and it does say onion OS when powering off. But other then then I just have a black screen. Old SD card works perfect without the onion OS. So I’m not bricked.
I'd copy the entire first SD card (minus the roms) onto the second one, including the .tmp_update folder. Try that. There's no reason why it shouldn't work that way.

Nice vid man! Quick question: When charging and 100% will the light turn blue such as the original OS? Mine is showing 100% but the light still red as if it were charging...
I purchased a Miyoo Mini as a gift for a friend that I intended to be kind of a pick-up and play device. Will the SD card still fail within a few weeks of normal play regardless of whether the person does firmware upgrades or installs custom firmware, or does the stock SD card just respond badly if you add/remove a lot of files? It's just that this kind of process involved in backing up data from an SD card to a computer to put it on a new SD card will likely be way over their heads, and I am not there to help them through it. I already advised them to backup their games to their MacBook (they don't have a PC) in case the SD card fails, and they said they would, but they barely understand how to do that and I doubt they will actually bother. They picked it up and started playing, and they really love the device the way it is. That shipping with a bad SD card thing is kind of inexcusable if so, because a lot of people are not going to understand the concept of backing up an SD card and putting the contents on a new one. That kind of ruins the whole "pick-up and play" aspect for people that don't really understand computers. I have a feeling that in a month or two I am going to be dealing with them crying their device is "broken" and have to struggle to get them setup with a new SD card that has no games to start... I may need to put together a much simplified tutorial that shows people how to make a microSD card interface with a computer and how to remove/insert them from the Miyoo Mini, and then just simplify the process down to copying all the contents from the root of the old SD card to the root of the new one, and that way they can at least enjoy the device without worrying about it failing in a month...
Unfortunately it is par for the course with Chinese devices. The SD cards included are literally bottom of the barrel. They might last forever, but more than likely they will fail eventually. My recommendation would always be to get a better SD card as quickly as possible. You could format it to FAT32 for the user, then all they need to do is drag everything from the included SD to the new one. It'll prevent disappointment down the line. I'll hopefully be uploading a video soon regarding common FAQs for this type of the device which should help new users learn a bit more!
@@RetroBreezeYT Yeah, I am thinking I will have to buy a microSD card for them, format it, and ship it to them. I might also have to get them a USB-C microSD card reader for the macBook, since the included dongle is full-sized USB and might not fit without an adapter. So that's the real pain point... if they do it themselves, they have to be sure to get microSD instead of full sized SD, and also be sure to get a microSD card reader that supports USB-C. The main thing that makes this difficult is they live so far away that all this has to be done via the Internet and postal service.
It's a pretty good idea to get just a little familiar with this stuff anyway, and the process isn't difficult at all. You could also screen share over zoom etc.!
Mine did the same with the stock SD Card (I mention this in the video). Are you using the included card? If so I'd recommend trying again with a Sandisk or Samsung card.
Hey man, love your work so far! I've got a question, so I've tried both MiniUI and OnionOS, I'm having an issue getting the screen scaling correct only in OnionOS, MiniUI allows me to select "Aspect" which fills the screen with near perfect scaling but I can't find a way to get the same results in Onion. I can actually see what I'm having an issue with right at the end of your video, on the genesis games you show, there's a column of dead pixels on one side of the screen. I've tried all the settings I can think of to fix it but all to no avail. I'm curious if you know of any way to get a true fullscreen picture, without the dead bar of pixels on one of the image borders. Oh, and by the way, I actually happened across your channel about a week before Russ from Retro Game Corps did a shout-out to you and I've gotta say, kudos man, you deserve the subs and the notoriety! Hope your channel does well and I look forward to future content!
When your putting onion on your new SD card you have other files on it. Why are they there, Shouldn’t it be empty because you formatted it to fat32? Time stamp 5:02
Thanks for the video! Helped a lot. I have a question. Is there a problem if I delete some of the games that came with the sd card? I'm pretty sure that I won't play Garfield or some game like that
V90 seems really great for the price. I still love my RGB10 as well. Actually I'm surprised how often I go back to it even when I have the RP2+ and more!
@@RetroBreezeYT thank you! So for the miyoo mini you technically don’t have too. I also had another question. If you’re using a new micro SD card do you have to install the latest miyoo mini update on it ? Or do you simply skip the update if it was already done on the old SD card? If that makes sense.
@@manny1524 @Manny The firmware update itself remains on the Miyoo's internal storage, so after you've done an update you can switch cards all you like. The only think to note is that some things for the OS like BIOS, themes etc. Are stored on the SD card, so you might want to copy the system files from the old SD to the new.
@@RetroBreezeYT so I wouldn’t do the same process you did ? Install Onion OS then drag everything into the root of the new SD then everything would work normally? I would have to add things into BIOS? Or am I confused lol
This is a super helpful guide! Thank you! Running into an issue where when I load a game, it just goes back to the game menu. Any idea why it would do that?
@@RetroBreezeYT I did! Dragged that into the BIOS folder as suggested. It's every game that I'm having this issue with. I can select a game, it'll say "Loading"... screen will go black/flash another black box and another loading screen... then right back to the games list.
i am having issues passing my saves over from stock miniui to onion os. i have ingame saves and save states on the same game but cant seem to find or load any for GBA. any tips on somthing i might be doing wrong?
Another stupid question, when i go to copy the contents of img folder to rom folder on mac it only gives option to “replace” or “skip” presumably i dont want to replace or that would swap the files for the roms in the folder. So what do i do?
So i didnt end up doing anything, skipped that step, did what you said about copying system golder contents into the BIOS folder, again multiple options to “replace” “skip” and in some instances “merge” i selected “replace” for all and now thats completed absolutely no emulators show up under the consoles tab in the miyoo mini 🙈 im completely lost and have no idea how to fix this
No such thing as a stupid question :) I'm glad your Mini is alright too! There's most likely an existing IMG folder inside the ROM folder. I'd go ahead and check inside the ROM folder and see what's in there. If you've not added anything to your Mini, its probably safe to replace the files.
@@RetroBreezeYT is there a way to uninstall onion and use my backup of the original sd card to go back to factory? As it is i cant play anything on this now. This guide doesnt seem to work if done on mac and now ive got a useless miyoo mini

If I already installed previous (Onion OS 3.9) version and want to upgrade to 3.10. Do I have to repeat all those process again ? or just download 3.10 and install it ?
So ive followed every step, it showed the installing screen, then changed to a different installing screen (retroarch?) then went black and wont show the charging screen. Its been a few minutes and im scared to unplug or switch it on incase i brick it. What should i do?
For anyone else that experiences this just disconnect the power supply and insert micro sd back into your computer to delete the file. Everything worked its just the miyoo mini never shows the charging screen when completed for some reason.
Thank you for the amazing tutorial. I have a question after I installed onion I found that there is a new firmware on the web, can you update the firmware with onion installed? Or can i use the original SD card and update with it?
Good question. Unfortunately no new firmware has released whilst onion is a thing. I'd use a spare SD just to keep your Onion install in-tact when the time comes.
So with the original SD that it came with the miyoo you can update the console without bricking it and when it's done you can change the SD to use onion?
Great video, but I copied over my 'saves' and 'states' files to my new SD card which now runs onion OS and cannot access the save/state from the original SD. Upon further inspection the 'states' folder on my original SD is empty although I had save/states on there, or so I thought unless these are stored elsewhere? I'm new to all of this so I don't know if I'm even describing the proper terminology, but basically is there another folder on the original SD card where a save/state might have gone if I used the functions 'menu' and 'save state' in game to save my progress? Should I try manually saving the game? It's Pokemon yellow if that's any help. Thanks! Edit: incidentally I just accidentally overwrote my main save state on my stock card so if I can't access it somewhere in my backup folder that I made during this video, it is gone. Unless there is a way to undo save states on the stock mini which I do not believe is the case.
That's odd. On the stock OS States are in the RetroArch/.retroarch/states folder 🤔 you could use the search function in your backup folder and search for the name of the ROM file. The state should be named the same.
The pap-kiii is finominal. Up to GBA. Everything is already preloaded and nothing to worry about. It heavily focus's on rpgs and trpgs. I just got it and now regretting my miyoo. (Again... I don't want to do the legwork to make the system stable)
I definitely understand that. Actually I have some videos I'm scripting for non-enthusiasts because these systems just aren't the same as buying a Nintendo off the shelf. Unfortunately there's a trend right now of poor software, especially from anbernic and Powkiddy. The best out-of-box experience right now is definitely RP2+ in my opinion.
Yo, man. Sorry to bother, but have you figured it out how to play arduboy games with the arduous*? * arduboy emulator on the experimental emulators. Over the rom folder, they can recognize .arduboy file and arduino files inside folders.
I turned on my mini for like 15 minutes. Went to the retro arch and tried to play a game. It crashed. Then said my SD card was unmounted. So I tried a different SD card same thing then I tried another one. It worked I have Onion installed but I did not get to back up anything from the stock sd card. Do you know where I could find the original stock games the mini came with?
There's no set list nor any way to find one. The SD cards included with the mini are illegally loaded with games by the sellers themselves. Retro devices like this should be considered "bring your own games", so you'll need to source your own games at this point. Also, you'll need a new, reliable SD card!
Oh by the way, you said you tried a few SD cards and they didn't work. You have to make sure they're formatted to Fat32. Any over 32GB are probably not Fat32 by default so you'll need to format them.
@@RetroBreezeYT I appreciate it! I do have a 64gb that I wanna use. I have a 16gb in the right now. I have put like 50+ games and it’s not even showing up on the card yet so I think I’ll be good for a while. You da best man! I’ll definitely be subscribing
I'm trying to use an SanDisk Extreme 256gb and it's not recognizing the Onion OS file and it's not instaling, but the shitty SD Card that came with the console yes. What can I do? When I go to Device Info, it's there, recognized, 256gb, but don't install the fckn Onion OS
Func + R2 to save, Func + L2 to load. Check the onion manual app for more info. Open RetroArch from apps menu, g to "Saving" and enable/disable auto save/load if you like.
Do I Have to repeat all the procedures when I like to update from a older version of onion OS to the latest release? Or do I just download the newer files, place them on the root folder of the sd card and that´s it?
I bought a rg351p and this exact thing happened to me. It quit working. I bought square trade. It only covers the cost of the device. I lost out on tax and the cost of square trade. You are right. These devices will fail if these steps are not taken.
You lost me... I just formatted my new SD card. It's blank. So... I reinsert the original card into the Miyoo in order to check the firmware version??? Or the SD card I just formatted? Then I copy the temp folder on to which SD card? The new one is blank. It doesn't have the file structure as shown in the video? So am I supposed to insert to new blank SD card in order to check the firmware version? Does this create the file structure on the new card? Sorry I'm hesitant to do this as I've heard it's possible to brick the device. Thanks.
You can even check the firmware version with no SD installed, it doesn't matter. It's extremely unlikely, in fact I'd say an almost impossible chance of bricking as long as you don't remove the SD or battery during the firmware update. After your firmware is updated, 0 chance of brick while installing Onion. And yes, you can copy the firmware update to a blank SD card too!
@@RetroBreezeYT Thanks I had not done that so I'm doing it now, I found an image scraper and deleted the Chinese image names. Also any thoughts on separating GBC and GB easily? I understand about putting them in different folders, but it's not easy to sift through all the games manually and drag and drop :)
I'll also mention that the file structure with the Miyoo mini is a bit of a mess I'm trying to make the Atari games appear and find myself going into lots of config files in the emulator section.
Hey I can't get PS1 games to play. I get the can't find bios screen when I try and load them. I've looked on reddit for a fix but I can't seem to get it to work or can't figure out the steps to what the fixes are explaining on reddit I think. Did you have any problems with this?
@@RetroBreezeYT Yea it was in the wrong place. I had it in the .retroarch folder instead of the BIOS folder on the ROOT of the SD. It's all good now. Something else I ran into that you can share with anyone that might have the same issue is with the Box Art. I followed your video and it wasn't working at first and it was all because I had a lower case "I" in Imgs folder name. Then when I would change it on the SD card it was default back to a lower case. So I had to create a folder on my desktop and drag it on to the SD card and volla it worked
hello sir, i want to ask. I tried to use a bigger sd card. After formatting to FAT32 and do all the copies to the new sd card. I put it on the device, it state that there's no game 😅 i do refresh the roms, but still shows no game. Do you know why? or did i do something wrong 🤔
There's no basic list. The "stock" SD card is filled with random games depending on who and where you buy it from. Never buy a version with more "storage" because its just a very bad SD card that will break quickly. Best way is to get a reliable SD card and source your own games. In fairness to your question, I'd be surprised if a 32GB included card didn't contain nearly every single Genesis game.
You can definitely go as low as 16GB, but I'm not sure about lower. I don't see why wouldn't work since the firmware takes barely any space. I'll look around and see if I can find a small SD to test.
Anything that can be formatted to FAT32. I've tried up to 128gb successfully but I really enjoy a smaller 32GB card on the miyoo mini. It's not really the best system for a massive card.

There's no in-built storage on the RG351P- there's absolutely nothing software-side you can't fix by flashing the SD Card. Unfortunately this kind of thing is just a reality with handheld devices. The actual truth is that you'll have a much better time if you learn the basics of flashing an SD card and managing a Rom library. If you become familiar with these simple tasks, you will really unlock the potential of your devices and learn more about them as you go. It's a win-win!
@@RetroBreezeYT thank you for all your help! But I’m still having trouble. I tried a new SD card and just updated the onion on it. And it does the same thing. It’s like onion os doesn’t not want to work. It will go thru the menu to choose what emulators I want them it shows press a and device will power down. After that I try and open it back up and screen is just lit up black. I don’t know what to do anymore….

Amazing guide! Thank you so much ♥
I purchased a Miyoo Mini as a gift for a friend that I intended to be kind of a pick-up and play device.
You could also screen share over zoom etc.!
hmmm mine is stuck in the "MIYOO - miyoo Linux Games" screen :( it looks like it dont finish and dont go to the battery symbol :(
Mine did the same with the stock SD Card (I mention this in the video). Are you using the included card? If so I'd recommend trying again with a Sandisk or Samsung card.
Mine doesnt have the rocket ship logo, it has a RED "final gate/unlocked" thing going on....
It it the Evangelion/NERV screen? I think that's the charging screen for the EVA theme.
Hmm I never noticed that! I'll take a look and let you know if I find anything
Im just wondering if you have onion OS if the miyoo firmware updates again do you need to do the miyoo update and get onion again?
As long as you're on the latest firmware, you won't need to update it again, regardless of what you do to the SD card, including installing Onion.

Or am I confused lol

i am having issues passing my saves over from stock miniui to onion os. i have ingame saves and save states on the same game but cant seem to find or load any for GBA. any tips on somthing i might be doing wrong?
I haven't messed with MiniUI at all to be honest. As long as the saves are in saves > currentprofile > saves/states > gpSP they should show up...
Another stupid question, when i go to copy the contents of img folder to rom folder on mac it only gives option to “replace” or “skip” presumably i dont want to replace or that would swap the files for the roms in the folder. So what do i do?
So i didnt end up doing anything, skipped that step, did what you said about copying system golder contents into the BIOS folder, again multiple options to “replace” “skip” and in some instances “merge” i selected “replace” for all and now thats completed absolutely no emulators show up under the consoles tab in the miyoo mini 🙈 im completely lost and have no idea how to fix this
God i wish i never started this now as i essentially have a useless miyoo mini 😞 should have left it stock
No such thing as a stupid question :) I'm glad your Mini is alright too!
There's most likely an existing IMG folder inside the ROM folder. I'd go ahead and check inside the ROM folder and see what's in there. If you've not added anything to your Mini, its probably safe to replace the files.

I have a question after I installed onion
I found that there is a new firmware on the web, can you update the firmware with onion installed?
No ps1.... But still. It's stable. It will last me years. I won't need to add roms or do anything. It's all there.
I'm the customer that has never added a rom or changed firmware. Most of us don't want to do all that.
I will be exploring arduboy after my DOS video! Hopefully will get you some good results :)
Hey if you can answer this i see you have a samsung evo 64 i was looking at the same one will i be able to format it to FAT32 ?
Yes! Just use a program called fat32format: www.ridgecrop.co.uk/guiformat.exe
Did you format it to FAT32? That's the most commonly skipped step.
Is there a way to manual save and load?
Func + R2 to save, Func + L2 to load. Check the onion manual app for more info.
Open RetroArch from apps menu, g to "Saving" and enable/disable auto save/load if you like.

@@RetroBreezeYT think about it. There is a huge market for people like me that want these devices and don't want to do all the leg work.
I don't see game cover images, any idea? Yet they are in the same folder as the roms consoles
You put the cover images into the 'Imgs' folder inside each rom folder, right?

How many mega drive games are on stock console?
There's no basic list. The "stock" SD card is filled with random games depending on who and where you buy it from. Never buy a version with more "storage" because its just a very bad SD card that will break quickly. Best way is to get a reliable SD card and source your own games. In fairness to your question, I'd be surprised if a 32GB included card didn't contain nearly every single Genesis game.

There's no in-built storage on the RG351P- there's absolutely nothing software-side you can't fix by flashing the SD Card. Unfortunately this kind of thing is just a reality with handheld devices.
