I have cooked for all the family since I was 16 years old. When I went to Japan, I tried to continue cooking. I bought the supplies, took the time to cook, stored the food in the refrigerator, and took small portions for myself each day. It took a lot of time, and the cost was the same as eating each day at the university cafeteria.
I am sure that you know that in this chapter you give us a lot of information about you.
I'm in Rural Canada we're 30kms from town. I can buy a back rack of rib for 8 bucks and cook at home. At a restaurant that same rack of ribs that's smaller is 30 bucks. Here in Canada eating out cost's a arm and a leg. Often 100 bucks for 2 people every time we eat out. We try to keep expense down by sharing a combo meal at Chinese place. Or going to another restaurant on Wednesday were wings are 75cents each.
We have lots of money compared to the average person. I just hate paying for food at restaurants because i see how crazy expensive it is.
A nice break from all of the crazy micro apartments that Usui-san has visited. No steep ladders and lofts, no toilet at the entrance without a door, no clear glass door showing the toilet room and bathroom. You have actual toilet paper storage in your current apartment, space for your preferred washing machine that is energy efficient, counter space in the kitchenette since you don’t need to cook. Very low rent and many conveniences nearby. I love it. But please keep the apartment search ongoing because it is so fascinating! Appreciation from Hawaii.
Thanks for showing us your cost of living in Japan. It’s actually really affordable. Compared to where I live, which is Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada, it’s so reasonable. Here, the same lifestyle would cost 3 to 4 times as much. Eating out here has become prohibitively expensive with meals around $16, and when you include tip, it’s over $20. Phone and internet here are controlled by monopolies, so we pay some of the highest rates in the world. Please keep up the great video work and showing us the details!
Thank you for that Usui, I have often wondered how the finances worked for you. Sadly in 30 plus viewings I have only seen maybe three or four that would be worth the upgrade from what you have. Personally I would like to see out of the window, rather than have the privacy covering, and would probably use a high bed with desk underneath. I live in 2 bed flat (apartment) in the UK with my eldest son and we have what we want, but do not have excess space. Best of luck as you continue your hunt for your perfect place. I will be watching with interest.

In the USA I must cook. In Japan so much inexpensive healthy food is easily available I never cooked there.

@@Natalia_Snape we cook in our kitchens like normal people around the world. It's expensive to eat 'out' daily. ready-made food is not that common in markets, maybe a salad mix or a soup, but generally food has to be prepared, especially to feed a family or more than one person.
@@Natalia_Snape Depends a lot on the age of the person. Over 70 years old tend to cook and cook from scratch. 50-70 mostly cook at home but using some convenience shortcut foods. 20-50 year olds seem to just buy ready to heat prepared foods like trays of frozen lasagna, bags of pasta skillet suppers, etc. I think there are regional differences too. In the South a lot more is made from scratch. Most people cook for big holidays. Most ethnic groups also cook more from scratch like Asian, Indian, Hispanic immigrants. Poor people eat a lot of canned and highly processed food because that is what food banks tend to give out. Of course I am broadly generalizing. The USA does NOT have a "cafe" culture like Europe. People tend to get coffee to go if they are spendy enough to buy coffee out. Fast food drive thru is a frequent stop for many of my fellow teachers. But recently fast food became much, much more expensive so they are buying reheatable main dishes from warehouse clubs or supermarkets. I cook from scratch because it saves me 75% over eating out and 55% over convenience foods. I'm a tightwad, thrifty person.

I'm kinda jealous. I had to move into another apartment here in the USA because my old apartment was upping the rent from $679 to $854 and I couldn't afford that. That doesn't even include utilities, food, gas, or anything else. 😭 Now I'm living with my little brother because it's the only way to get a decent apartment since we can both pay half the expenses. I'm still paying $630 in rent alone...😓 At least it's a much nicer apartment! 🥳
It's the only way you can do it now. Sharing space with someone else. I am in a studio downtown Boston....the market rate for it is $3,450 !!! For a VERY small studio.
I am blown away at how affordable healthy food is in Japan.
And the micro apartment is such a sensible solution for a single person. US laws prohibit apartments being that small though due to the horrific tenement situations of the past. (Not that we don't still have terrible housing situations.)
If a single person in the US wanted a cost of living this low, they would need to live in their car!

I did not realize your apartment was that small. It is a very effective layout. The problem with many of the microapartments you have filmed is that the first priority is to use up wasted space in the building, with no consideration of how people will live in the space, or whether they can. Architect’s failure. (Like that apartment that is all over social media that is just a long hallway that wraps around the outside of a glass building, no privacy, tons of wasted square footage, difficult to place a bed.)
I agree, many apartments that Usui filmed although double size, less useful place.
Your current home is maximising its space because it is square. Therefore you should look at the most square apartments in future and avoid long, thin ones. In that way you will be able to expand your lifestyle with the minimum rent increase - hopefully 😊. Good Luck in your search for the perfect place. We are walking this path with you!

@@tyler.bergen Yep. Dear Modern did a furniture layout for it, so it is technically possible to live in, but I can’t imagine it’s comfortable, practical, or worth the $1k rent.

If you look closer there is a sink on the top of the toilet. I think this is common in Japan.

I think you already have your ideal micro apartment, the real measure for another apartment is definitely going to be rent and location. From what you have shown us, that is going to be very difficult to find without going much further out.
How minutes is the train ride to Shinjuku station right now? Since that is the metric you use for the other apartments you show us.

Here in Brasil, we have water taps with filters to drink clean water. Im not sure if Japan has it. But it would be a nice idea to save space for water plastic bottles. If you install a new tap type
I understand why it’s challenging to find an ideal Micro Apartment because your current one is efficient and cost effective 😊 you can save a lot of money for the future 😊 I also have the same hobbies, and I constantly hear others around me asking me if I get bored, but that’s not how I feel at all! Thank you for showing us the cost of living in that part of the world. I’m Mexican, I don’t live in Mexico City, but I guess the price for living in there are almost the same as in Tokyo since both are giant cities. Unfortunately in Mexico we don’t have such a nice transport system and other perks of living in well planned cities like Tokyo, but we do have a lot of charm and warm people.
I think it's awesome that even less expensive apartments in Japan are so modern, clean and well maintained. In the USA, the less expensive apartments are old and beat up. I agree with another poster that suggested that you could have a refrigerator in your apartment if you put a shelf over the washer/dryer. Take care of yourself Usui and thank you for the video! 🙂

Usui, this was so interesting! It seems like it is very cheap to live in Tokyo - the UK where I am is very expensive. You are very lucky....especially with housing. Our housing in UK is very expensive, along with utilities. Most people spend at least 80% of their monthly salary on housing & utilities before any food or socialising is accounted for. An average "studio" apartment, roughly the same size as yours would cost 188,896 yen a month for example. Utilities are paid separately (approx 34,008 a month) and then we have a monthly tax to pay (and we must pay it or go to jail) So housing, utilities and tax have to be paid for before we go and buy food. Internet and phone could be about 13,222 yen approximately.

I currently spend about 1,000 euros (160,855 JPY) a month on expenses (including my rent which is 530 euros (85,253 JPY) per month). If I really tried hard, I could manage with 850 euros (136,727 JPY). But then life would be pretty miserable.

So the only thing different between the way you live and the way i live, is i dont eat out as much i cook for myself. I live in a 8x10 room. I have set it up to fit my life. I do read and watch dramas. I only have a single bed but a bigger desk. Oh and you live there and i live in America and im female. Living micro is easy as long as you want too.

I enjoyed this video. It was very interesting to see the costs of living. After seeing how much you spend monthly, it is going to be hard to find a cheaper alternative. With the newer micro apartments you have been viewing you will be paying an additional 44,000 Yen. It's quite expensive.

Usui, you simply HAVE to learn to cook. You can have more nutritious food, more economically. Friends family and potential partners are impressed by home cooking. ESPECIALLY potential partners. A few days ago, I made an apple pie. I did not buy a pie crust, I made it myself. It's easy.
he doesn't have a fridge, or an oven, or a microwave, or anywhere to store ingredients. What can you realistically cook with one pan?
The man barely has espace for one who he is going to impress? also he doesn´t have storage or any room to cook

Thank you for this! I think you were reading my mind because in the last few videos I was thinking what your budget for future apartments were and if it could beat out your current living situation. But honestly, your current living situation seems extremely well. Yes, you could have a bit more space for a fridge because even if you didn't need it- it's nice to have one for emergencies, hot days, potential small groceries. But aside from that, you seem to have all the boxes ticked off.

These expenses sound like a lot of money. At least here in the Czechia. You didn't mention if you save anything for the future, vacations, retirement, etc.I hope you have some left over from your paycheck for these things. I wish you the best of luck for the future and filming. It is interesting to observe the different life on the other side of the planet.
Usui you inspire me! I have loved in southern america a long time, and now i live in downtown Boston in a very small place, just like yours. You help show me to be more simple to make this work! And what to look for if/when i move. My place is pretty good for the needs, the space works out well, etc. My bathroom is huge compared to yours, but no tub. 😢

Thank you for this. Always interesting to see how people do things. I like to cook, so having space for that as well as a refrigerator would be important. Everyone has to figure out what they would prioritize and work from there. You know what you want and what is important to you. I know what I prioritize and what is important to me. That is what make this journey interesting! Places that I could never deal with, places that I could make work. I hope you keep on presenting things like this. While I'm not looking to relocate, I do enjoy seeing the different places that people will find!

Thank you for sharing your expenses for the month. Your rent where you are is spectacular. I like your place and it seems right for you though maybe a little small. If you don't care for cooking or feel like you want a fridge you are in the right place. I love seeing all the micro apartments available and how different they can be. There are at least 4 or 5 in your viewing list that I would feel happy and comfortable living in and a few real questionable ones too.
When I first became aware of the micro apartment concept it seemed a terrible idea but some of them are so nice and having clothes washers considered in most of the apartments makes them very feasible.

I was going to say that with no refrigerator, you must eat most of your meals out. Cooking for one sometimes makes no sense. But eating out can become expensive, especially here in the US. We have 2 granddaughters, so we eat most of our meals here at home.
