As a retired Master Chief Petty Officer I guess you had to live in the Navy during these times. This movie is one of my favorites... it really does depict how a sailor's life was then... when I enlisted at 19. I would do it all over again.

I was stationed in Gitmo, Cuba in the '80's and transferred from Public Works Dept. over to the Naval Base duty section.
Went from wearing Greens to Whites as uniform of the day and wearing the SP armband, duty belt with a nightstick and a flashlight.
Used this line a few times to break up scuffles and arguments with the fleet sailors. If said in the right tone and with a crazy smile and a laugh, it was usually effective in getting laughter and defusing the situation.

Three of my uncle s were Navy Chiefs E G Conklin served 1939 to 64, Henry Ward 1942 to 1975 and Milt Hatchell 1950 to 1975. So I have a warm spot in my heart for this film. I was only ten when this film came out so I first saw it about twelve years later. Jack was on the edge of superstardom with Easy Rider and Five Easy pieces and subsequent films like Chinatown and One flew over the Cuckoos Nest. Jack and Randy Quaid are both excellent but the real standout for me is Otis Young he is a freak in revelation. I saw him in a couple episodes of Columbia around this time and he had a small part in Hollywood knights1979. I wish he made more movies!!!! Has the “Salty Seaman “ revised this film yet?

Mule still might have a way out, but the window in closing and going back home isn't appealing to him. All three come from rough childhoods. Badass could relate when they visited the kids home.
