Fever should look in Europe too for player's like messeman or Stephanie mavunga she's a fast athletic big who can block shots, hit 3's. She's played for fever in the past, she's better defensively than all the fevers big
Wanting to protect Nalyssa Smith is like wanting to fire the reporter that questioned poking CC in the eye. Other than that I enjoyed your analysis. :-)
I think the best case for protecting Nalyssa is the trade value argument. And also, frankly, it's not necessarily a given that the Valkyries take anyone from The Fever if they protect her. Like, they'll end up with 12 players. There are 12 teams. But they also have draft picks and they're able to sign free agents not currently with any team, presumably. Some team is likely going to get away with keeping all of their players. Not crazy to think it'd be The Fever. Having said that, I think Berger was so obviously wasted on that bench, I have a hard time imagining the Valkyries not giving her a look. And I like Berger, a lot, and think she makes a ton of sense in the role Wheeler played this season (subbing out for the 1, 2, and 3). And I think Nalyssa is an amazingly bad fit for the Fever's current needs. I'd rather just leave her unprotected, where she'd almost certainly be too tempting a target, and then you're basically guaranteed to keep all of the other players, whether you protect them or not. If you're just protecting Nalyssa to trade her, well, why not just try to sign the equivalent talent you'd want to trade her for? The Fever don't need Nalyssa's offensive skills. What they need is a stretch 4 who' can play D. They need a faster Dantas. And although players like that don't grow on trees, I don't think trading Nalyssa is the only way to get one.
haha, I don't have any opinion of who she is dating but seems like a trade makes the most sense. She'd have more value to another team where she can get more touches or be in the post.
Not only will players “be interested” in signing one year contracts, but NO PLAYER will sign a contract longer than 1 year. There will be too big of a jump in the CBA after 2025.
Kelsey was disappointing in the games 2 playoff but of course you try to sign her tho.. Boston and Dantas need to get in shape to run. Keep Dantas and Temi. Smith needs to stay she has size. They need to get a guard and power forward in the draft with experience. And everyone needs to go to defense camp.
Smith can't defend, fever should look in Europe too ,with better defense and athletic big like Stephanie mavunga, she's a former fever player in Europe, very athletic big, she'll thrive in this fever team because she's fast and can hit 3's

Will NaLyssa truly have a lot of trade value? She has great potential, which the right Coach may be able to develop. But she also has some red flags. The social media antics of NaLyssa, her brother, and her girlfriend have been an embarrassment for the Fever. They have raised questions of whether her loyalty to Fever was compromised - whether her loyalty was actually compromised or not, the optics aren't good. Her free throw percentage wavers around 50%. She has done a poor job on defense. She was benched for half a game because of skipping a practice in order to make drunken videos on tiktok with her girlfriend. She's inconsistent - in one game she'll ball out and show us what she's capable of. But then in the next game she seems to be phoning it in. Tony, Spotrac WNBA Salary Cap has two Fever players protected 2025. Katie Lou Samuelson $180,250 and Damiris Dantas at $100,000. Katie Lou in her exit interview said she is happy to be back with the Fever for a second year. Katie Lou and Dantas has to be protected if they have a 2025 Protected contract.
Yep, I was there for exit interviews. Protected in the expansino draft is different than protected in terms of contracts - protected contracts are fully guaranteed, essentially.
@@TonyEastPacersFever Thanks Tony new fan. Seems like the WNBA is different than some of the other leagues in terminology. With Katie Lou pay and production it seems like the new team would not be interested anyway.
@@TonyEastPacersFever would someone like Katie Lou on a protected contract be "available" to an expansion team if not draft-protected? Or would they be off limits to the expansion team even if not draft-protected?
Fab four I'm good with staying but not Nalyssa Smith and the rest of the roster can go. CC needs an enforcer and a good 3 like Satou Sabally or Napheesa Collier would be just swell.
Interesting take on Smith, but unless you're trading her to the sun's, I don't think she will do any better for anyone else with that stinking thinking she has working for herself. If they don't protect Mitchell, can she get drafted by Valk's and still just resign with the Fever? I agree the Indy native Berger must be protected and utilized. We could trade Sides for a half-eaten ham sandwich if we can find any takers. Berger, CC, Boston, Hull, Mitchell if needed to protect, Temi is the 6 I would protect. I would throw Dantis or Saxton in if it is not necessary to protect Mitchell. But I do want Wheeler back at a lower salary but a longer contract, so she finishes her career with the Fever. Max for Mitchell but a shorter contract, 2 or 3 seasons. I do see that sides is trying to grow, but she is so out of her depths and a babysitter instead of the coach that is needed that I am really looking for Fever to improve at least that one cog in their machine.
I doubt any free agent will sign a contract longer than a year. The collective bargaining agreement is being renegotiated this year, and will almost certainly allow higher salary caps. Players won't want to lock themselves into a lower salary when they know higher opportunities are coming.
I thought the same also. Then I found out that Lin Dunn consulted with Kelly Krauskopf, new President on the hiring of Christie Sides. I was hoping Kelly was going to make some changes now I think it will all stay the same.

They need a new coach. Sides blew a bunch of leads. She doesn't know how to run an offense (or defense). I'm afraid since she hasn't been fired she'll be here next year. It would be so disappointing
I would protect Berger as the new backup guard (wheeler is too expensive) as well as Clark, Boston, Hull, Mitchell and Fagbenle. I imagine Smith would be picked in expansion as Samuelson is too expensive. The top free agent target is a 4 obviously and even with Mitchell on a supermax for a year, there should be money for one big addition. I don’t think Smith is happy here and I’m not sure if it’s fixable plus I think she’s gone in 2026 no matter what the fever do.
You keep Smith to entice a trade (unless one can be done before hand). She’s not a bad player, just a bad fit, and her rookie scale contract is something to be desired by other teams. Also, no way is Golden State picking up Wheeler; she’ll demand too much money that she doesn’t warrant.
Ok, but she’s last year of the rookie contact no? I agree it’s a bad fit for the system. Wheeler is a free agent and that’s why I think Berger has value.
I agree with protecting Berger, but only if the coach is willing to develop her and give her meaningful minutes in games. Otherwise, maybe it's kinder to let another team grab her that will help her realized her potential. I really felt for her and Saxton being trapped on the bench this year.
Didn’t the Fever exercise their options on Samuelson and Wallace? If so, that means they’re protected. Another thing to consider are those under a rookie contract. If unprotected, and taken, I believe the language states that the expansion team has to then pay the player a super max contract. $250,000. Now obviously the Fever would protect Clark and Reese, Brink and Jackson will also get protected, but will Boston be? If Berger is still under a rookie contract she’ll be unprotected. It’s very unlikely they would take her under a super max. I don’t know that the Fever will core Mitchell for a couple of reasons. If they do to get something in trade value, it could mean she makes less, which isn’t a good look. If they do to keep her around when she wants to leave, it’s not a good look. Remember, next year all but two players in the W who aren’t under rookie contracts will be free agents. They’ll be watching. They probably won’t go where teams make it hard to leave. Would you?
Example from USA Today: "The Valkyries will then have the chance to acquire the contract or negotiating rights to one of the non-protected, available players from each of the 12 current WNBA teams." I see none of the mainstream media outlets who have your interpretation that, instead of acquiring the contract of a rookie, the Valkyries would instead have to pay that player a super max contract. It seems they would acquire Berger's current contract. However, unless they are needing to keep contracts low as a result of other picks, I sincerely doubt they would take Berger over Samuelson or Wallace in the scenario the video presents. I don't believe any WBNA team cares about what you are calling "a good look". Actually the opposite is often true, as Chicago is an example, if players are allowed to dictate when they want to leave, that's what's not "a good look" and can get someone fired as a result. Most of the top players have been cored as much as allowed, so if the Fever got a free agent worth having, that player would most likely have already been fully cored, and wouldn't care if the Fever cored Mitchell since the Fever couldn't core this new free agent as they would, again, most likely have all their cores used up, and the issue would be irrelevant thus no concern of if "teams make it hard to leave." But, to be clear, if a player is worth keeping, all successful WNBA teams will make it as hard as possible for that player to leave. That's the expectation, that players will be required to play to the full extent of their contract and league rules including coring, not be allowed to wander off over concerns of "a good look".
