Used the 103 for 2 years now and I agree it captures “S” noises more because anything over the 5khz is raised 5 db. I find myself always lowering the 5khz with a eq

@@applecrazy1 depends what you need it for brother. The AKG C414 XLii is a very sensitive mic which is good for vocalists. On the other hand the TLM 103 is best for deeper, louder and harsher voices which is good for rapping. Also, the Shure 7MB is a very clear mic which is good for podcasts, interviews and voice overs but be aware that by using it for other uses like singing or rap it can seem a little quiet. ®

Cool video. The reason why you say it compliments deeper voices is because it picks up less of the low and midlow frequencies than a TLM 49 for example. Therefore even in deeper vocals the TLM 103 captures more of the high end of your voice. I personally prefer the TLM 49 because it is more neutral and captures the deep frequencies perfectly as well.

That’s wat I got rn I got the at2020 Im an artist and I mainly record in studios because I rather focus on the recording process but I literally spent thousands and I want to save money and invest in a better studio however I like my vocals clean. Would you say that going from the at2020 and going to the Tlm 103 is a drastic difference and does it sound good already before the mix?

I have been rocking with the TLM 102 for a little while now. Into a Warm Audio Tone Beast TB12 into a Focusrite Solo. Learning how to mix and master has made my tracks SO much better. Still need help but getting there.
You’ll look back on your mixes a year from now and be amazed at how much better you’ll get. Keep working man and you’ll inevitably improve. It’s all about trial and error I’ve realized. Oh and keep things simple. The more you over complicate your mixes the more noticeable it’ll become!

Mic placement, preamp , converters there’s so many factors that could cause sibilance…TLM103 likes air, you can’t get too close to the capsule, it’s very sensitive, quiet, it picks up everything
After testing the Neumann TLM102, TLM103, U87AI and TLM49 for my voice I ended up using the Sennheiser MKH416. Just love it.
The 416 is really nice too. I’d be interested in trying that mic out someday
I have the MKH416 which I think is the most accurate sounding mic for voice, but not so sure for singing. I'm also about to receive my TLM103 so I'm excited about that. Dream mic has to be the U87

Yeah for a shotgun mic it apparently breaks the standards and can be used for other things outside of V/O and Film. A really special innovation of sound engineering
@@UndergroundSoundProductions you will hate it I guarantee 😂 i own 103, u87 and mkh416 and i can tell you the sibilance is incredible with mkh416 thin paper distortion that is incredibly fatiguing - all you need is 103 as a bright modern sound and u87 for the classical warm midrange sound - since you are using an Apollo try the v76 unison pre with your tlm103 or the neve 1084/1073 but please steer away from mkh416 unless you record voice actors who knows the microphone and prefer it for their VO work
For the sss problem just modify the position now is taking much sound from the nose..try to grave forward a bit ✌🏽by the way, knowing how to use this mic is fire love it

The vibe of the video is FIRE. The colors. Everything is FIRE. So calm. The instrumental too is perfect. One question. Obviously you Mix vocals to post with video but do you mix AND master to make a video like this ?
So for the audio I just use some compression and roll off sub frequencies below 60hz. I’ll sometimes use a noise gate if the fan on the light I use for my videos is too loud in the recording. I try to keep it pretty simple cause I want to get a mostly natural sound from my setup when I do the videos. And then I just layer in some background music and that’s it! The key is to just keep it simple man! I’ve done videos in the past where I have 10+ plugins when all I’m doing is technically a voice over lol

I'd say it's worth it for sure. The thing is due to COVID 19 many studios have shut down and are now moving towards remote work. But they expect the same microphones that they had in their studios. Casting directors, studios and voice actors know the TLM 103. They know the MKH 416. So its value imo is because of the fact that studios and audio engineers actually require the TLM 103. Studios don't care about some no-name mic. They only care about the TLM 103. And especially in an environment like this where you literally can't even find a TLM 103 on Amazon or Sweetwater anymore, you can be damn sure that the TLM 103 was worth buying in 2020. I literally know dozens of actors/actresses that want a brand new TLM 103 but can't get one right now. And it's the microphone that many voiceactors aspire to in their setup.
Right man I feel like the 103 is almost like the studio staple. That and the 87 for sure. Especially when it comes to voice over. However, I do love the 103 on rap/singing vocals as well. By the way, I love your videos man I like the shootouts/tests. I love nerding out over this stuff so seeing likewise content is always dopee!
@@UndergroundSoundProductions Oh yeah, definitely agree. I feel like so much could be done with that extra $2000 differential. TLM 103 + 2K is like a used Whisper room or a Senneiser MKH 416+Twin or a truckload of training (for voiceactors). Also I find your channel super interesting to watch :P

Ah the sibilances on the 103 is the main reason I chose the 102 over it. Very happy! More versatile too for guitars and higher voices etc. For ultra sibilant voices I have the 47jr which is like buttery smooth on sibilances. It's like a built in deesser or something lol
Yea man that’s why I wanna get the u87ai. I’ve heard the u87 is pretty much the tlm but better and with the sibilance corrected. Very interested in that microphone!

I have been wanting to buy a good quality mic for a while and I have been researching quite a lot. The Neumann TLM 103 was one of my considerations and your video explained a lot of things I needed to know before I made my decision. So thank you so much for this video! I have a request actually. I sing a lot in high notes, but have a deep voice - what do you think will suit me more?
I just recorded with the u87, (not the AI - the vintage) and it sounds terrible... made my voice nasal/dull/puffy... so I'm looking for a mic that'll suit me.
BTW, you mentioned wanting to have the U87AI - I saw another video on youtube of a guy explaining that the U87ai creates a nasal tone. I also listened to a demonstration, and heard it too... you might want to try it before you buy it...
From my experience I can not confirm this - to me the U87ai is the most open sounding Mic in my locker. One aspect is pairing it with the right preamp, though - from my experience U87ai is picky when it comes to preamp selection. Also, signals taken with the U87ai sometimes need more post processing to realy shine, but it takes EQ exceptionally well: due to the midrange detail provided, it allows to sculpture the sound in post a lot. The non-Ai models are all so old now that every single one tends to sound different - I'd give the Ai at least a try.

I've bought stuff from Australia (to Europe) and there are considerable delays on Australian exports at the moment.
I love my TLM 103.But I sold it and bought the u87ai because of the frequency response of the 103 vs u87ai. I needed a lot less time spent eq removing part of the boosted 103's signal.

My experience is very different. I had a TLM103 in 2009 and did a whole album with it. Back in the days i can‘t remember it that it‘s beeb sibilant, but i read those statements all the time. I mean, i haven‘t rapped into a TLM for nearly 10 Years, but at the moment i got a U87ai going into a Neve 1073 SPX and into my Apollo Twin X . Sibilance is killing me!
The U87ai is not as bright, as people would think, for me it sounds like it has a very, very present midrange, with a good pound of meat in the lower mids, harsh in the presence range but not open enough in the highs.
It‘s a very good microphone, don‘t get me wrong, but at this price point, i wouldn‘t buy it again and i am not going to keep it for so long, i guess
Maybe try a different preamp before you sell it - I love the Ai on the Pacifica. Also, have you tried to angle the mic a little so it addresses your mouth from above or below? - It can help a lot with sibilance.
@@tom_k_d I tried an Avalon 737 lately. Sibilance was worse. I have to admit that sibilance is pretty much always an issue. i don´t blame the U87ai alone for it. it´s my issue but i guess the u87 just don´t fit my voice. i tried very much every angle to reduce it, but it just didn´t work.FYI, i i´ve send the avalon back in a heartbeat and kept the 1073. I´ll try a Brauner Phanthera next wekk to see if it would work better with my voice
@@DiaSimeAudioMax Thanks for the feedback - I once auditioned the Phanthera against U87ai and was not impressed - I would be interested in your judgement on it once you tested it.
Both the 737 and the AMS 1073 are not 'rounding' the top end too much - if you have these options, maybe try BAE 1073 or Pacifica instead before abandoning the U87ai - I had simmilar problems when I started using the U87ai (on AD2022 - sounds great overall, but tends to be sibilant, too), but meanwhile I get very decent results out of it without sibilance issues on the Pacifica, yet have all the midrange detail the U87 is famous for.
@@tom_k_d I had the BAE a few years back and was quite happy with it. i only bought the neve cause i thought it was „the real deal“. I‘d love to try the pacifica but here in Germany it‘s as expensive, as the U87. I‘ve only read good things about it tho. But it‘s not easy to get here and there are not many shops here, that let you try before you buy :(

It's the cheap metal one by SE Electronics I believe
U87ai is definitely two steps up sonically, and it takes EQ very well. TLM103 sometimes is a little easier to work with, though: It has a much higher max SPL, and it's output is not that hot. U87ai max SPL is 117dB (without the pad engaged), so you might need to work with distance to avoid distortion when recording loud singers. In addition the output of the U87ai is relatively hot (-5,8 dBu @ max SPL 117dB), which can cause converter overload when using vintage style preamps with a min gain of +20dB at standard studio level (0 dBFS equals +13 dBu) converters. Speaking vintage style mic preamps: Pairing the U87ai with a decent preamp is mandatory to take full benefit of this mic - I tried several and have now paired it with an A-Designs Pacifica most of the time. While it can sound harsh when addressed vertically and in proximity, tilting it a little so it points to your mouth from a little upwards or downwards will often fix this (you could try this with the TLM103, too).
@Paye ta Disquette Don't worry, TLM103 with a solid entry level interface is a good choice - the TLM103 does not necessarily need an expensive pre: it still has plenty of output (though it's not as 'hot' as the U87ai), and does not require the same amount of transient smoothing (typically done via external, transformer-equipped preamps) as the U87ai to sound smooth. TLM103/Motu M4 is a decent combination, and if you can't get at least solid results with this pairing, it's not because of the gear ;) ...
Informative video... however, I have been in situations when tracking drums, vocals, and guitars with the U87, U67, U47, M269... etc... can you place this mic on drums. guitar, a singer so that we know the capabilities... thank you...

Your better off getting an advanced audio cm800t or Stam audio Sa800 if your going for the Sony c800 G sound both a lot cheap but just as good if you ask me! And if your going to spend 3k on a mic go with the lauten audio eden mic one of the best mics in the world right now and it’s a tube mic!

Hard floors, no curtains or carpet
Hang some moving blankets around when recording and you should be good.
Ahahahah yeah condenser mic tend to hear even a moth fart 💨. For untreated room Some people recommend dynamic mic cause they pickup way less ambiant noise .
First thing you can try is reduce the distance at minimum between you and the mic ( that involv caring about proximity effect and plosives ) .

I also owned a u87 ai at one point and got rid of it cause I thought it was over hyped, but I feel I mix a lot better now then I did 8 years ago so would give that mic another try. But the tlm49 for me bro
Yup the tlm 49 for high pitch/brighter vocalists and the 103/87 for deep voice people. I feel like it’s not as general as that but it’s a good starting place to picking which mic is best for you. I reallyyy wanna try that 87. I wanna see how my 103 stacks up to it. Next year I’ll find a way to cop

For sure that’s not a bad idea only problem is I’ve looked at rental prices and it’s stupid expensive just to try it out. If I lived in LA where most rental shops I’ve seen are located, I would probably do so and see how I like it. However, I’ve heard great things and the comparison between the 103 and it so I’m sure I’d like the 87 as well. Just haven’t bit the bullet and made the purchase. Soon though soon

The 286s was a cool piece of hardware. I use to have one a few years back that I used with the shure sm7b and I liked how it sound. Definitely a must have for live-streaming/podcasting I’d say

I just recently went from the at4040 to the TLM 102. The TLM 102 is definitely a better mic. I am extremely happy with it.

I had this for a long time, it was at some point collecting dust (not literally) and I sold it on an app for about $600. It sold fast. I went to USB mics for the convenience and thinking just good quality mics in VO will suffice until I saw a VO coach who said don't use USB mics, and get a Neumann. Ugh!! Now that I see the TLM 103 is still selling for over 1K, I regret selling it.

The U87ai has a transformer. TLM (Transformer-less microphone) 103 has no transformer, they sound nothing alike. A transformer colors the low mids. You sound good on a 103 but, not everyone will. You would sound better on a U87ai. A U67 is what you really want.

No. It's technique. Listen to Howard Stern and watch how he uses this mic!!! The key to using this mic for podcasts is: 1) a world class preamp 2) using CLOSE proximity 3) and using a lower head amp setting so as not to overdrive the diaphragm. Don't believe me. Go listen to Stern. AND watch.

@@UndergroundSoundProductions The u87 ai is the best microphone out there, yess you can get decent quality with tlm 103, but be carefull, if it hit's the ground the grill of that thing bends and when it does the microphone will sound way to harsh on the top and it will sound mudy on the bottom and it will destroy the quality of the microphone.
I accidentally hit the ground with the microphone, so the microphone started to recording distorted of the sound.
While i gonna fix the microphone, i gonna buy a rode nt1 just to test it out and see in a studio room if it is good for it.

@@UndergroundSoundProductions I mentioned in another comment the Lauten Eden Fc-386 is easily the best mic I ever used. They’re getting more popular now even thought they been around for 10 years I think. I recorded my entire first project on a Neumann U87 which was phenomenal but my studio in my area got this Lauten mic I mentioned earlier this year and the sound is noticeably better to me. It’s more clear and crispy and sounds like it records whatever sound is being driven into it very honestly. I know it comes down to preference but the Lauten 386 is absolutely fire man. They’re the price I believe, the Lauten is running $3k right now.
Oh yeah I remember you talking about that mic. I think the main reason why I have my eyes so set on the 87 besides of it’s reputation, is the claim that it sounds like the 103 but better. I love the 103 so much so if this is true the 87 and me would be a match made in heaven. I just really wish the 103 wasn’t as sibilant if that was the case this would be the perfect microphone. At least for me. I’ll check that Lauten out!

You're addressing the mic wrong. You need need to speak at an angle to the front capsule. Then you can lose your pop filter and maybe even the shock mount.
