God bless this couple for giving this dog another chance at quality of life and not being dissuaded by being the third owners. I feel so badly for the Doberman's unstable and unsocialized history but am super relieved that he didn't go to yet another new owner who had more sympathy than the capability and alpha energy required to handle his issues. It was a thing of beauty to watch that first strong correction from the owner when his dog crashed into their child. I actually cheered! Between Beckman, Prince and this new owner, I have such hope for this Doberman's future.

Thank you for the comment, we are diligently watching all of Joel's videos and following his advice and it is definitely paying off. This dog brought crazy and a ton of love with him, now we just need to be consistent with training, as we are his last owners. The video shows mostly the crazy, but he is a wonderful and smart dog. Neutering him is on the calendar in two weeks :)

This beautiful Doberman did not have a great start in life, but he certainly hit the lottery when he was adopted by this family. Two years of non-socialization and a strong, willful and dominant personality will take a lot of work but the reward will be an amazing companion in time. The owners are certainly committed to bringing out the best in this dog and I’m sure, with patience and hard work, they’ll be able to get where they want to be with him.

You briefly spoke about this Doberman thinking about jumping the fence, and it made me remember my childhood. From the time I was born, until I left home at eighteen, my mother had Dobermans. Anywhere from six to ten at a time, practically my entire childhood.
With only a single exception, every single one of them, once reaching their adult heights, could clear a 4' chain link fence with ease anytime they pleased. Bravo, the largest male and one of my favorites, could clear a 5' fence too. The exception was Francesca. She figured out how to lift the latch of the gate, push it open, go through, push it closed behind her, and lower the latch back into place. Once she learned that trick, I never saw her jumping the fences again. She went in and out of the gate, like she thought she was one of us Humans.

    • @suzy7301

@@AndyJarman You absolutely should intervene. I put my GSD behind me, or stand in front of him, and tell the dogs off with a very loud, deep "NO" and make my short 5'4" self look as big as possible. It gets them to back off. My dog trusts me and knows to run to me when a dog bullies him. It will prevent a fight or your dog getting seriously injured.
I also don't allow my dog to bully another. What I find happens is that 3 dogs will gang up on one and mine will sort of join the party, which is the moment I will recall him to me to take the pressure off the dog being piled on.
It's a lot of consistent work, but it helps him have fun at the dog park with his pals wrestling, running and playing bitey face and not stress too much. I am never on my phone and I helicopter "parent" him, watching like a hawk for physical cues.

I'm currently dog sitting a male, 3 year old Doberman. I don't have much experience with dogs and was told the dog is trained when I agreed to sit.
But I've quickly learned that this dog is SO STRONG and leash reactive, he just yanks me around. I'm not a small person by any means but I struggle so much with controlling him, especially with sudden reactions.
I've been following your channel and watched the videos on stopping the pulling and leash reactiveness and whilst I managed to get him to not pull and redirect him with a hip flip when it's just the two of us, when he sees another dog or a person that makes eye contact with him, he just GOES. If I see the potential trigger, I have time to intervene. But all it takes is for someone to make a sound at him or a dog bark and he's off.
He's not aggressive, luckily, but he's so big (55kg) and strong, he pulled me going down the stairs, I nearly fell down, and he nearly dragged me onto the road in front of a car when he saw another dog, and many owners with smaller dogs are not happy when he lunges towards them (and he likes to play like the doberman in this video).
I have to walk him on a very short leash, holding with both hands and be ready at any moment, to dig my heels in. It feels like I might get friction burn on my hands from the leash pulling.
I'll keep working with him, but for now, there are no 'relaxing' walks with him

It kills me when people take ownership of a Doberman and have no intention of making them part of the family. The dog suffers because they need that human attachment. I adopted a 18 month old female that was on a tether in the back yard or caged in the house. The first couple weeks were extremely difficult because she was so wild in her play that she would run full speed and jump right into my chest. Fortunately she has an amazing temperament and welcomes strangers and has never shown any aggression towards people. She still plays a bit too rough with other dogs but we are working on it. So glad the new owners are willing to give the dog what it needs to have a good life.

Holy crap Joel this owner is AMAZING. He knows exactly when to correct and remind the dog who is the boss and when to get calm at the boss' orders. They are setting this dog up for SUCCESS. There will be people out there that don't like the putting him on his side, but it is an excellent technique for establishing who is the master and calming the dog down, it's kind of a Milan technique. The owner knows just when to reset the dog. I've been watching a horse trainer Joel and he implements what you did with the dog, which is soak time. You correct the dog, remove him from the situation, reset, and then let the dog soak in what just happened and think about it. Then, you let them go back and either learn and behave, or do it again, which is when you correct. Seeing Prince standup for the younger Doberman was amazing to see too, truly Joel/Prince team acting as masters to train and teach this dog. This was one of your best videos yet. This Doberman definitely gives off an intense vibe just as the owner saw, he will be too much for some dogs which can lead to a conflict some day with the wrong dog, but the owners are aware and are prepared to take steps to stop it from getting there. Definitely adding this video to my list, great view on body language and timing corrections just right.

My horse, herd leader, trapped her in the far end pf the pasture and didnt let her leave that place for many days.
Very interesting and she was slowly learning how to be a horse again and after a month they were best buds. She was also much more respectful and easier to handle for people without me interacting too much.

It's so cool watching this owner have the discipline and understanding of the dogs body language, if there's any owner you would have faith in to condition such a difficult dog, this is one.
I'd love to know what Joel's thought's are on the dog harnesses instead of regular leashes, the ones that wrap around the torso. My girlfriend's friend has one on her dog and argued with me that a regular leash is inhumane and disgusting because the dogs can choke themselves on it, but yet then at the same time I see her struggling to maintain her dogs discipline because the harness just allows the dog pull against her super easily.

This is refreshing to see a committed owner that observes and is pro-reactive TO THE OUT OF BOUNDS DOG BEHAVIORS. This dog certainly has some issues and recognizing them this man went to a pro for better understanding in correcting the behaviors. OUTSTANDING Dog Ownership. Taking control, and seeking help means this dog will have a huge value add to his life. Not only with other dogs, but, towards younger people as well. He was not intent on harming that girl but his size made it TOO MUCH. He needs to learn to control the inner dog and become man's best friend by exercising discipline, not beatings, but boundary control. He really will have a good life here I firmly believe.

i've seen a doberman like this before at a dog daycare/rehab i worked at. he would pester other dogs and seem like he's playing but then things escalate quickly. unpredictable when it would turn from play to aggression. EVERY time the dog would come in all the dogs in the yard would bark and go crazy, like they knew the dog was trouble.

Thank you so much Joel for this video. When you asked your viewers what kind of content we would like to see, I was amazed by the amount of folks that requested Doberman training.
I’ve commented on so many of your videos, because I too have a replica of this fellow. He’s a huge Euro, with a high prey drive, and his brain and body are in constant motion and strong, fast. It seems ridiculous to say that it’s difficult to get this dog to focus, because when they set their sights on something, it’s difficult to pull their focus from it. But at the same time they seem so scattered and intentionally avoiding focusing on other things (that would be better choices). I’ve come to view my Dobi as such a hyper vigilant guard dog, that he doesn’t seem to understand why I want him to focus on me. He looks at me like he’s thinking “lady, you don’t seem to understand how I work…. I need to look at everything besides you, to be able to do my job of guarding you!” He looks at me like I’m completely irrational when I want to walk in or out of doors ahead of him, for the same reason….he is bred to go ahead of me to make sure that all is clear. I think that this breed is so misunderstood, especially the Euro working lines, because they just don’t operate like a normal dog. Prince is amazing, but he is American Dobi, and they are just so much easier to work with. I have a Euro and American and they’re like night and day….almost like completely different breed. I’ve been coming to realize that Breeders really need to rethink selling these Euro Dobermans to the general public, because they are often way too much for the average person to handle.
I appreciate your videos and have learned so much. Thank you 😊

I LOVED the sequence at 5:57 onwards where Prince SO does his thing after all the "Dominance" from the other dog. At first he just draws a VERY definite line, like saying "NO !" and at first the other dog doesn't get it. So at 6:00 after a bit of a freeze, Prince does the first Play bow, which other dog doesn't get at first, and trys to dominate again. Prince barks at him then does ANOTHER play bow, and THIS time other dog gets it and reciprocates ! ......LOVE Prince the Teacher. He is an AWESOME woof

I'm happy to see more doberman stuff. I'm on the other side of the country and often though about bringing my dog to you. She's just like this dog but a female. She's just over a year and I've had her since a puppy. She's also my first dog and I thought that I just must not know anything since I'm new. But now seeing this and that this dog is just like mine with the looking around, forcing a sit but then gets up, punishments are just more play time in her head. I've worked with dobermans and met so many nice smart ones but my own puppy is nothing like the nice dogs I've met. Ever since we got her home we've known there's something not right in her head. Maybe you could do a video on how to pick up a puppy so we don't end up with something like this. I know you can't know for sure and the personality doesn't develop for a year but there must be some things to look for other than just checking to see if they are physically healthy.

Happy to see these owners having such experience to be quick to react. Also, this Doberman is overstimulated by everything (other dogs, smells, situations) + he's intact dominant male. I don't think he's aggressive, but he's just too much (too strong, too all over the place, too over the top, very high energy, lacks focus almost ADHD like). And I think Beckman is right - no correction will fix this insanity because it's like he's not present in his brain at that very moment.
He's also a large and very strong dog 😵 Doesn't know what to do with himself, energy outbursts (if they tired out this dog, he maaaaay come down a bit). He sort of reminds me of the energy my dog has. Though my dog is socialized but is still very hyper, strong, and nuts 😶 ( have a 2 year old Serbian Tricolor Hound).

I relate very much to this owner, despite not having such a big dog. I took over a neurotic mini poodle senior of 13 years about 3 months ago. His previous owners never house-trained him, nor trained him in general obedience, or cared much for his mental health or social health. His mental state was chaos with so much anxiety, but I kept my cool. House training a senior dog, is a bit like training a puppy, but also being mindful that they may need a spot to eliminate on in case of emergency, so I gave him that in the bathroom as a compromise. It's not optimal, but I'd rather him do it there than elsewhere.
I've also worked hard on basic obedience, and socializing, as it was stated in his wellness report that his owner mostly carried him around. He was in such a sorry state that when he came, his gut was wrecked and his teeth bad, so I've thrown out any special feed/garbage treats, and mostly tried to incorporate more clean protein and fibers, I also give him bones to chew to help with the tartar. He does not get any human food, or to beg at the table. Not only that, but he now has a rigid schedule, with set activities to lessen his anxiety, mealtimes and he is such a gem.
Our reactivity training I base mostly your videos, and from there I work on positively associating dogs with rewards, depending on intensity. We have had great success training with two pitties that live nearby, with owners that understand that you can't let dogs run up, they allow us to walk past the park to stop and watch, to work on our own, so he can get used to meeting dogs. We have had 2 great fence meetings, with less and less reactivity.
My most prideful moment has been when I worked with your tips for perfect recall, and I can now have him heel off-leash, return to position after eliminating and respond to "free" (=allowed to cruise more freely). With the corrections and appropriately applied rewards, I've trained this dog to help me find mushrooms on our walks, to ignore meeting dogs when heel is called and to actually listen/communicate. I've seen a mountain of anxiety lifted off this tiny guy's shoulders, immense willingness to work and great pride with every success he has.
I can't believe nobody prior even bothered to care for him.

My GS is only 17 weeks, maybe 35-37 pounds, but can suddenly pull me over if he catches me off guard and I’m on unstable footing..he’s a sweetie, thank god. One warning is not to leave a carabiner clip on your leash..I was using it as a third hand to occasionally tie off the leash, and I was plying with him yesterday and I think the neighbors might’ve been looking up the ASPCA number because somehow he got the carabiner clipped in between two of his toes! It..sounded..like..I was trying to murder him, very slowly! I got it off pretty quickly though. I’m lucky he gets to play with two huge retrievers that put him in his place. Been a godsend to have a friendly dog owning neighbor!
