I think this shows that Dobermans absolutely ARE NOT savage dogs. Prince is remarkably patient and well-trained, and when he fights back, he doesn't *attack* the other dog. It's just "Hey, knock it off."

I have a large female Dutchie and have worked with Malinois males in the past. The males, especially the unneutered ones are relentless and need a strong leader. They will walk all over an owner and they don't do well if they don't have a firm confident leader. Unless your breeding, these dogs can be unmanageable if unneutered. I had no issues with my Dutchie, but I socialized the heck out of her and spend a minimum of an hour per day training. Lazy owners almost always screw up these powerful dogs. Don't get one if that's you, sorry. Actually the Doberman is a far calmer dog and is more suited to being alone than either the Mal or Dutchie, but if you raise them right and have the time for them there is no better dog for family protection and even just as a pet. They are very affectionate and are mostly goofballs, but will protect you with their lives. You just have to know what you are doing before you decide, oh I want to get a cool dog like the ones from John Wick 3. Then you wonder why you need new furniture every couple months.

Great video! It touches on a couple of really important topics.
As the owner of a Dutch Shepherd, you can only do so much to make a Dutch Shepherd not act like a Dutch Shepherd.
Obviously some suppression is necessary, and Beckman does it well!
But this video is also a reminder to potential owners considering super high energy working dogs such as these.
How much time are you willing to spend suppressing what the dog naturally is?
And is it fair to the dog?
Dutch shepherds typically are not "dog park dogs", and this is a great video to remind people to pick a breed that is best suited to their lifestyle. I like how Beckman asked the owners what they want their life to look like with this animal.
Thank you for a video that demonstrates teaching some necessary suppression, but also serves as a reminder to people to be careful what breeds they pick...

      @juliesdroidsync 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@june song not sure how he thinks that would be shaming? (I'd rather hurt somebody's feelings, then have a dog wind up with the wrong owner, become unmanageable and get dumped at a pound... But those that know me would not describe me as politically correct! )
My dutch is a 2 year old intact male. I will tell you that they are not for everybody. And that's okay.
      Dog parks??? Nope.
I've had people ask if my dog could be a stud for their females (gsds). Another Nope.
Frankly, I don't personally know anyone that I would trust to handle the offspring of my boy... 😂
The difficulty will be finding playmates for the dog featured in this video. Frankly most dogs just can't handle the rough play and yes they do like the rough stuff.
You had better be supremely confident in your ability to control them.
Glad these people are getting some help... Too many don't. But still I hope it makes people think twice before getting a Dutch Shepherd or a Belgian Malinois or even a German Shepherd.

I have exactly the same dog! Mix breed of Cane Corso (mother) & German Shepard (father) - incredible, mirror like behavior. It took me 1 year of intense training to be able to walk him without a leash, but even now (after 4 years) I would not be able to have him ignore or play with dogs like prince in the dog park. On the street, he would be able to sit down while prince walks by, but in the dog park... just not possible. He is now still crazy and dominant, but very obedient on the other hand. I whish you share some wisdom, how to handle dogs like this with other large (dominant) males in a closed / limited places. P.S. My dog is nurtured, but that didnt changed his behavior much. And when it comes to nature, yes, he can hike full day, without a problem, but wildlife is big problem. I already had issues with him and roe deer... so that is one more thing I would like to see on the channel, how to deal and train your dogs vs wildlife.

He goes out on off leash pack hikes twice a week and does great in the pack. But one on one dog meets is random who he growls at . He has good obedience, however off leash out in nature he can be easily distracted. The best reassurance for his safety is the E Collar, it’s like a wireless leash. It’s really helping with his shaping off leash. Hope that helps.🐶💞

But I will never own another dog because he was literally my best friend. He kept me warm where I would've assuredly froze to death. He went with me everywhere I went and was a part of me. I love you Rascal and I miss you still all the time.

If that had been a full-grown male Dutch Shepherd the picture could have been very different. I saw someone use the word "relentless" and that's a very good description of a Dutch Shepherd's approach. Their energy levels are simply off the chart and they will keep up whatever they are doing at maximum speed, at maxiumum power, at maximum EVERYTHING. There's no off switch unless they get rigorous training to teach them boundaries. They are, as far as I am concerned, the most intelligent breed on the planet. You can look into their eyes and you SEE their brain at work, evaluating, assessing. On Dutch farms they were trained to bring in sheep and cattle at night, on their own, without human supervision. As if they have some kind of internal clock, "OK, it's 5 o'clock, time to take the animals home," and they'd go to work. They are also distinctive for being one of the oldest unchanged breeds around. The Dutchie you see today looks exactly like the Dutch Shepherds guarding Dutch farms 200 years ago.

Maybe because a female is less threatened by a male dog doing that? Idk either but it seems like it. Like it’s not a competition a lot of the time unlike a male dog mounting a male dog, who will probably get offended. Females dogs get mounted so maybe it’s no as offensive to her? Male dog might take it as trying to dominate. She seems very passive too

I need a Prince to train my mini-Schnauzer :( - I can’t go to a dog park nor walk with him on the street as he becomes possessed when he sees other dogs (as well as people) passing by but mostly aggressive with other dogs (he’d try to snap/bite if he gets close enough). I have been looking for a “Prince” to put him in his place, I think that’s what he needs; to learn boundaries.

  • @mariannegiamakis1785
    @mariannegiamakis1785 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Mr. Beckman,
Your videos are very interesting because, like you say, aggressive dogs get taught manners.
And that the main need for these types is some socialization so they'll get fresh ideas about their place in society; about being polite.
Learning how to interact properly and have fun in life instead of their actions causing problems.
So in the past few days i've watched about 20 vids and you ask people for comments.
i had absolutely no intention of ever writing; it isn't something i generally do.
But i saw the video Prince puts young Dutch Shepherd in its place, and decided to let you know what i want to know.
It would just be great to get a chance to learn all this information because i love dogs. love them.
First off, in general, you're always commenting on the actions of a dog you're correcting. ok, good.
btw, you yourself are a straightforward man and that's good too -it's always great to listen to truthful people and it's comforting to find that in their character.
btw, i get a whole police vibe from your videos.
they feel like the police. but, then again, what you do w dogs, isn't that far from what they do with people. And i guess that may be why i'm getting that impression.
Anyways, you generally comment on the actions of dogs you are correcting.
Could you also comment pls on their mindsets more?
And, if you could also give comments on the different mindsets and character traits a breed generally has; that would really be informative.
it would be great to understand these dogs more.
i love how dogs are so direct about what they think and are feeling, but, it would be great to understand the why they are like that better.
An example would be, i was surprised to learn from you how macho male dogs were. i truly had no idea they're characters were centered on the whole macho idea thing.
(i've read books on dogs and they've never mentioned the macho thing, and, i never got to know this.)
Whether a dog, male or female, aggressive or not aggressive, it didn't matter. The whole central thought they all seemed to understand came across as being about the idea of macho.
it surprised me, and, i understand them better now.
So, in the video Prince puts young Dutch Shepherd in his place,
i watched the first 2 seconds of the video and i laughed.
i also stopped the video and, right then and there, decided i would write to ask about mindset and differing character traits of the breeds.
Also, what they're bred for: is it just for dog's looks, or,
what mindsets, body traits and characters do they have for the job they're bred for.
i know it isn't what correcting dog behaviours is about, but,
that would be really interesting, and, give people deep psychological understanding and gen info they might appreciate on these animals.
Who, btw, i now have the lovely idea that most dogs are just plain good natured, even the aggressive ones, who just need to be corrected in order that they understand right ideas.
Kind of like where you say you correct them and a little light bulb goes off in their heads "Oh? i had no idea! now i get it.", and they behave more happily and accepting of other dogs.
Their aggression goes way down when they get the right idea and get happy. It's great!
Lovely to see most have such a good nature in them, especially in those that we see as so bad because they're aggressive, but, that it just stems mainly from their wrong ideas. lovely
So, i'm asking this info from you because i have the idea you truly understand dogs, so, the info from your viewpoint would be good to know.
btw, you are right about positive reinf for beh to be encouraged, and, negative about behaviours to discourage. That comes across as effective in the videos also.
So, about the video w the dutch shepherd, the two get closer and
i saw Prince get angrily over aggressive with him, saying,
Dude, let me show you why you're my Bitch,
and, the other macho guy was like
    Fuck off
let's be honest, first, my apologies for being rude, and, that's what they said.
i think, when two alpha males fight, or even just posture, rallying for status and establishing their dominance
it's like one of the dogs is saying
i'm a boss dog and the other one is saying
yeah, but, i'm THE boss dog
    and their Friend/owner is saying
Yeah, but I'm Boss of both of you
and that's where their understanding of their place in society and their obedience really starts to stem from.
And, i appreciate that i could read their nature correctly, and, thanks for that.
btw, the only 2 things that put me off are, you sound hard all the time, and, it feels wearing, but, like you say in the videos, that's why i sound aggressive, i have to teach them i'm the boss, not them.
and, ok, you work w dogs, but, buy some new clothes! the ones you wear are always so worn they look like they're melting on you. not pleasant.
i know a comment on clothing, that it's not my place to say this, and it's none of my business. again, i apologize for just being rude, i know i'm being rude, sorry,
i believe i'd want someone to let me know their impressions and how they're made to feel while watching the videos. i figure you would too.
    anyways, that's about it.
i know your videos center on training the dogs, but, it seems you have more info people would appreciate on mindsets, etc.
Maybe people would let you know if they'd appreciate more comments interspersed about mindset etc.
in the correction videos you do.
thank you for all your work, and, thank you for truly entertaining and informative videos on dog training.
now i'll go back and finish watching the video.
i'm sure Prince is going to tell that shepherd What's Up.
    Sincerely,
    Marianne Giamakis

My doberman acts just like this pup when it comes to etiquette with other dogs. He just wants to play but he’s TOO much and being unneutered male this means possible dog fights. This video (and all your videos) are SO helpful and have made such a difference when I plateaued in my obedience training with my dobie. I’m so excited to start using this method bc I know it’ll make a difference with him.

  • @MackerelCat
    @MackerelCat 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I don’t understand why people won’t neuter their dogs! We don’t apply the same morality to dogs as to humans, but so many people have a problem neutering their dog like it is somehow diminishing the dog to remove their bits. That’s applying human thinking to a dog and it just causes trouble for everyone. Only well adjusted dogs who do not display aggression can keep their bits, and that is a minority of dogs. Prince is a special boy who has repeatedly shown he is in control of himself, that’s why he can keep his. Most dogs however cannot and should not.

    • @adebisi7500
      @adebisi7500 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Do your research. There are side effects to neutering a dog too young prior to reaching sexual/ physical maturity etc.

I currently have my dog in training and I am learning a lot about him being unbalanced with other dogs. Prince is giving corrections, hard but GOOD corrections. There is no locked jaw and he isnt licking his lips as a sign of aggression. The other dog has his tail straight up and looks like he has a mohawk on his back constantly testing his limits because he is used to not being corrected. The excessive tail wagging tells he is not balanced. He likes the girl but he his not following his boundaries with her
