Lord willing, we will bring this long-forgotten truth to the attention of Christ's church; a truth that has been put aside for too long because of ignorance or improper handling of God's word. It is a saddening thing, that so many sisters are not proudly declaring their submission to Christ and the God-ordained roles of men and women through this symbol.
Joseph Ho Pin Yi Galatians 4:12 Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles-free from those laws.
Hello Cynthia, thank you for your concern, but there are a few things I need to point out. First, God's law in the context of Galatians is referring to the Mosaic law (cf 5:2-3), that is not in the same category as commands such as those found in Matthew 18 and 1Cor 11. Second, one of the problems in Galatia was that some wanted to be justified by keeping that law (5:4). That is not what we are trying to do with head coverings. We believe this is a command to the church that we obey because we have been justified. We do this out of our love for God, not because we want to contribute anything to our salvation. Lastly, if New Testament commands belong to the same category as the Mosaic law, that you seem to be implying we should live "in freedom" from, on what basis could you hold to ANY of the commands from Christ or his apostles given in the New Testament? Should we set aside things like church discipline? I hope that is not what you believe, and I hope that this has been helpful to you.
Actually there is evidence in the text for head covering being cultural. First, 1 Corinthians 11 is the only text which even talks about head coverings, which is significant because it was not mentioned in letters to other cities, though women's dress was addressed, such as in 1 Tim 2. Second, Paul begins and ends the section about head covering by calling it a custom (v. 2, 16). It is a tradition which Paul encouraged the women in Corinth to adhere to as a symbol of a woman's submission to her husband and to the Lord. This submission is a timeless requirement, but the symbol of it may change from culture to culture and from time to time. Also, the whole point of this passage is that this was one of the ways people were creating disorder in Corinth... trying to draw attention to themselves by breaking cultural norms. Look at the context (10:23-33; 11:17-21). People do the same thing today by making church into a fashion show. When a woman showed up in the Corinthian church without her head covered it demonstrated a lack of submission because she was pushing the boundaries. Women in the church today might do the same by WEARING a head covering to church in order to draw attention to themselves. It's an issue of the heart. If a woman reads 1 Cor 11 and has the (wrong) conviction that she must wear a head covering, and that is her motivation for wearing it, she is not sinning, but neither are any of the other ladies who do not wear a covering. Also, in verse 10, it is the act of giving over authority to the man... the actual act of submission is what the grammar indicates the woman has upon the head, not a cloth covering. He makes a cultural connection when he says that nature teaches that men should not have long hair (v. 14). Every culture has different expectations for the length of men or women's hair. The Vikings considered it more manly to have long hair, but the Romans did not. Jewish culture was rather open about this; consider Samson, Absalom, etc... But what is unbiblical is for a man to dress femininely or women to dress masculinely, whatever that may look like in the particular culture (Deut 22:5). And v. 15 also calls the woman's own hair a covering for her.
This is such a wonderful video i have started to cover since a few days before 2018 Thanksgiving. It has been so wonderful seeing the changes around me men being more polite to me , holding the door etcetera and not leering. I have also seen that my relationship with God has grown stronger wanting to show him that listening to his commands are the most important thing! Also I've been wanting to dress more modestly and find myself on a regular basis wearing skirts and not pants and I have not worn pants for several weeks now because for some reason it had just made me feel like I was putting myself out there and I don't believe that's what should be done. So praise the Lord for this in which it has proven to me to be beneficial no matter how many family members disagree and no matter how many people turn me away I will always have God!!!
Kassie Hoover Galatians 4:12 Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles-free from those laws.
Head covering had never even crossed my mind until recently as I started to investigate Christian traditions outside my own. It immediately struck me as endearing, modest and respectful of something divine - almost as if it captured a feminine beauty beyond anything I'd experienced in my culture.
A- Galatians 4:12 Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles-free from those laws.
Cynthia Hunter you’re taking that verse out of context. Firstly do you think Paul was a self contradicting hypocrite giving out God ordained ordnances to the church then telling people to be lawless? The letter by Paul to the Galatians was addressing the law of moses vs the gospel of Jesus Christ. The law of Moses was good, but it was a shadow and was temporary. Paul was telling the Galatians that you cannot be a part of two covenants. You can only have the new covenant with God through Jesus Christ and His gospel. When Paul speaks about the law he is talking about the law of Moses not the Law of Christ Jesus. We are not to be a lawless people. There is a law of Christ which we must follow. Woman is to veil her head when she prays or prophesies. Galatians 4:10-12 KJVS [10] Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. [11] I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. [12] Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am ; for I am as ye are : ye have not injured me at all. Paul was talking about people trying to observe Old Testament feast from the old covenant which was not for the gentiles, and is not meant to be done as if it were a law of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
@@topcatcoolio8807 We can once again see the great wisdom in St. Paul's inspired wisdom: This is what is proper for women who claim to have reverence for God. "11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was FIRST formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression" 1 Timothy 2:10-14 (KJV)
50 years ago when I was 10 on Sunday all the protestant and Catholic women wore hats scarves or veils to Sunday worship. Why do we all have collective amnesia about this now and act as if this practice was a strange new practice brought to us by aliens. In many other countries this practice has NEVER stopped but has gone on for centuries unbroken!
Second wave of feminism called for a “national unveiling” among all women in the churches since they saw headcovering as “oppression by the patriarchy.” Truly sad how most churches believed, and still believe, this
In many countries women never stopped wearing a head covering, being a scarf, a veil, a hat or a small cotton square like the Plymouth Brethren, or the Quakers. In some churches like the Assemblies of God, women cover their heads when they pray, read the Bible or speak in Church
I grew up in the 90s and this is something I also distinctly remember in regards to my mother as well as other women I knew and would see around. I almost instinctively knew whether they were going to church or not depending on whether their head was covered or not, I didn't even know about 1 Cor 11, I was just a little kid, but it stood out as a very visible marker and many years later I think I can see the wisdom behind it. This tradition, today has almost wholesale been completely lost within the American Protestant church specifically which is somewhat disheartening.
I am re watching this for encouragement. I am the only woman in my church who covers her head. I am consistent in church but not consistent in every day life. I don't think this will ever be part of the Christian community again for various reasons. Yet, I want to be faithful to this conviction that God has given me. So, the only way to get support is to watch TH-cam videos and especially by pastors that I already follow. It's a real blessing to me that R.C. Sproul stood with this. He's probably in heaven saying " I told you it wasn't cultural ". I just kidding I know he is too busy enjoying Jesus.
@@clariceeilken5467 thank you. You did encourage me. I did feel like other women who cover their head are in communities who teach and support it. It's nice to know that there are other individuals who submit to this just because the bible says so even without women around them doing it. Thank you, sis.
I live in Nigeria, West Africa, and we mostly cover our heads during worship. It's no controversy here; it's d norm. When I stayed in SLC last year, I always covered my head. I was d only who did at my church but felt no condemnation.
L Bee I also am the only woman that covers her head in my church. I just started 2 weeks ago and have seen how God is working in my life and changing me through me covering my head. It is a joyful thing for me to cover my head now and I am so thankful to a God for convicting me. I pray that through more women covering their heads it will inspire more women to cover as well.
@@sunnyskyacres there is certainly a difference. One I can't explain. Especially in prayer or reading the bible. Thank you for sharing. It conforts and helps.
I am new to covering and yes, it is difficult after 44 years of not but WOW, what I am learning about submission, false womanhood and also losing the makeup, jewelry and is PRICELESS! I have a long way to go.
Thanks, sister. We teach that jewelry and makeup can be worn for vain reasons or for the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). Therefore, it is not inherently good or bad. It is the reasons behind what you wear that matters most for those particular things. Glad to hear you're enjoying about what you're learning. A book we highly recommend is "The Excellent Wife" by Martha Peace (and "The Exemplary Husband" by Stuart Scott as the counterpart for men).
If a woman refuses to cover her head before praying, then her head must be shaved. That is how serious a matter this is before Almighty God. 6" If a woman does not wear a veil, let her also cut off her hair; now if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her be veiled. 7 A man, indeed, ought not to have his head veiled, for he is an image and glory of God; but woman is a glory of man. 8 For it is not man who was made from woman, but woman was made from man. 9 And man was not created for woman, but woman for man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have authority over her head, because of her guardian angels." 1 Corinthians 11:6-10 (MontgomeryNT)
Thank you for sharing this. Head covering is something that the Lord has placed on my heart and I've been digging into it recently and this explanation is wise and concisely explained.
I was recently convicted to cover my head after reading this scripture and fasting. I hurt for the people sitting under a preacher who refuses to believe this scripture is for today and teaches otherwise. Thank you
thank you wonderful to here have been covering my head for 2 days now and am so thankful that the LORD opened my eyes to this the changes where immediate , I pray to anyone wrestling with this to fast and pray about it. I have been a Christian 16 years now and am in my 50s so it has been a huge battle for me but GOD is good all the time and extremely patient .
In 1 Corinthians 11:16, Paul responded to any readers who may disagree with his teaching about the use of headcoverings: "But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God." This may indicate that headcoverings were considered a standard, universal Christian symbolic practice (rather than a local cultural custom). In other words, while churches were spread out geographically and contained a diversity of cultures, they all practiced headcovering for female members.
R.C. Sproul exposited that unending Scriptural dispute with intellect and wisdom. That was amazing. Thank You Lord for Dr. Sproulʼs life. Glory to God. † ❤️
Emmanuel, though convictions differ on the "where" specifically, we believe it is speaking about the local church gathering rather than prayer at any time. But if you feel like it's disrespectful to pray with something on your head outside of church, you have the freedom to remove your hat.
I just started covering a week ago. And wow, I just love this tradition as a women so much. It lets me know so clearly that when I go about my life I am under the authority of Christ. I’ve been able to just walk with Christ so much more in unity because of this amazing tradition, that sadly ended for most church’s. I think that it’s so important that when people from the church read verses unpopular with our culture like 1 Corinthians 11, that we study it. And put God’s word over what we feel knowing God’s plans are far better than our own.
Amen! Verses 5 through 7, as well as verse 13, of 1 Corinthians 11 use a form of the Greek word for "veiled", κατακαλύπτω katakalupto; this is contrasted with the Greek word περιβόλαιον peribolaion, which is mentioned in verse 15 of the same chapter, in reference to "something cast around" as with the "hair of a woman … like a mantle cast around". These separate Greek words indicate that there are thus two headcoverings that Paul states are compulsory for Christian women to wear, a cloth veil and her natural hair.

Wow. Good for him. Praise the Lord fornfaithful teachers. Such a good video. I felt called to cover my head about two years ago and feel so much more peaceful, calm, and content when I cover my head/ hair. I think modern "feminism" (which is extremely destructive to not only women but also to marraiges, children, families, and the church) and this message is very much needed. Here is a bit of what I know hopefully it will help anyone if they are interested? 1 Cor 11 is pretty clear that a woman should cover or veil her head in public worship. The word for covering in 1 Corthians 11:4, 5,6,7, 13, is the word, katakalýptō, from katá, "down, and kalýptō, "to cover"-cover down, to make appropriate (complete), i.e. to wear a veil. It is the root word used for the veil that separated the Holy of holies from the priests. But only in vrs 15, where Paul is giving an example from nature is a different word used, "but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering." This is different word from the others for "cover"= "peribolaion," that which is tossed around or a mantel that can be thrown around the shoulders and body (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around). Cover in the first few verses of 1 Cor 11, should really be translated veil as that is the proper Greek word used. This is where we get the English saying, "Let your hair down." Becuase during the "sexual revolution" women let their hair down out of their buns, uncovered their hair and shook it back and forth. Which is very alluring to man. If hair if the covering as some people say, can men be bald or take their hair off and on? No obviously not. This is why men take their hats off in church or at baseball games, etc. Plus the veil or covering is it be a symbol of us coming under God's authority to the angels. And since all women have hair, that is not a symbol. We put a covering or veil on our head as a symbol that we are coming under authority to remind the fallen, and not fallen angles that we are in obedient to God's order. (As Satan rebelled because he wanted more authority). Up until only the last two generations woman covered in Church. All of our grandmothers would have covered in church. This is why the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, the orthodox churches, a lot of African congratations, and Messiniac Beleivers, etc still cover their hair. Here's some verses in the OT about head covering. Hope these help. Isaiah 47:1-2. Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones and grind flour, "put off your veil", strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers. (So as we can see, even virgins were to keep their heads covered and save their hair for their husbands. Otherwise it is like they are showing all their nakedness). Numbers 5:18. Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, "uncover the woman’s head," and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse. Also Genesis 20:16 says in the Hebrew Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this is "a covering for her eyes" (to put back on her wedding covering) you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked. From what I understand In Genesis 24:65. Rebekah covers herself because the bridal price has already been paid. 2 vrs later we see Isaac take Rebekah bright away into his tent. There was no wedding ceremony. Her covering herself was an outward show of her marriage to Isaac. Since they were married he was allowed to take her right away into his tent and "uncover" her.
If the angels would cover their glory before the throne (Isaiah 6) - so should we. Hair is our glory, and nature shows us so per Paul's example. I agree w/ RC completely.
Britt Rich hey sis! Yes, R.C. Sproul is defending Pauls teaching that women should cover their head with a veil while praying and prophesying. Apostle Paul, uses women’s long hair as an example/mirror of God wanting our head to be covered. Hope this makes sense. 😉
Psalmist No such custom as for women to uncover their jaír let alone in iklesia. The newcomers to the faith were unsure as what to do. They were new to the customs. The men and women often covered their heads. The men would uncover their heads to teach and the new women were confused as to weather they should uncover theirs also when they taught. Also, the covering for women was to keep men from being distracted from their beauty as God was to receive all the glory and the women,s hair was their glory. So in iklesia they were being taught to keep their heads covered while the men were to uncover to teach and pray in front of the iklesia.
Thank you.....lol I was made fun of for covering my head yesterday....today my head is covered again and I bought 2 more scarves......I am so thankful for the mind change.
I was also confused about it for years because the Bible says one thing and then all the women at church did something else. But thank God after growing closer to the Lord I was able to not be so influenced by the culture and what I’m seeing around me anymore. The more we grow in Christ the more we can separate the two. Glory to God
@@Getvictd744 That's wonderful, I also cover and I am the only lady at church doing so. I have to say that with head covering also comes an interest in dressing modest...I ditched the pants a few years ago and even learned to make my own long dresses. I have seen time and time again, elder's daughters and wives come to church in sensual clothing (miniskirts, form fitting, low cut shirts, even short pants) and it is not really fitting for christian ladies to wear those clothes the pagans do. You don't worry what people think, only what the Lord thinks, be a christian in all areas of your life.
Amen to both you ladies....yes! The closer we grow to Him the more we are influenced by Him. I have been thinking about moving from pants as well. Praise God for His discernment.
@@Getvictd744 I am glad to hear this. Let me tell you why I moved away from pants....It appears that men find sensual clothing on a lady to be a form of soft porn....Once I understood that, I ditched the pants completely. Now, there are cultures where women wear loose pants and a long tunic over them and their forms are not showing too much at all, so that's totally modest (think India, Pakistan, etc.) I think in general if you're showing body forms with tight clothing, its probably not modest, use your best judgement. Definitely the tight jeans and tights are not modest and think about it, even pagans at work don't want you wearing those at most jobs, why would you wear them as a christian? Are we (we as in christian communities) dressing bellow the standards of modesty of pagans, why is that? Why is it ok to come to church in miniskirts that pagan schools don't allow nor most workplaces? Ridiculous.
I'm so very glad to find this channel. I was feeling a bit alone out here with my belief ob what seems about as clear and straightforward as scripture provides on any subject.
Such an important subject and one is is often rejected because of ignorance, misunderstanding, or feministic rebellion.... I do appreciate R.C.'s point of view because it is biblical. I would like to see this teaching better understood, in more detail and taught more often. Obedience with understanding on any biblical principle greatly glorifies our God!

Head covering is for all time, Holy Spirit speaks through Paul. Head covering worn in India because Thomas went there. Explains it was not just for Corinth
While it can be nice to wear it at all times, the Bible clearly says that a woman should cover while praying or prophesying. We can do more if we want to. And regarding India, it's normal for us because it's cultural. Yes, Thomas did come here, but the people were already wearing veils since B.C.

@@Jo7submitted2christ I currently don't cover all the time; just at church and Bible study and prayer meetings. Wearing a headcovering all the time means being ready all the time, I guess...
The King's Daughter right! This was my take when I was called to ministry when the Lord told me in a audible voice to cover my head. I have a prophetic ministry in healing and deliverance and I am in constant communication with the spirit of the Lord and therefore I can potentially prophecy at anytime or I may be led to pray or move according to the spirit so always being ready is the main reason why I stay covered during my waking hours.
I always wear head coverings during church meetings on the Lord's day, that's what most Brethren Christians do. I believe it is a beautiful teaching of God's glory. I didn't come here to pick up fights though, I'm just saying I agree with Sproul.
Wow! 😮 Sproul was such a gift ❤️🙌🏼 This is the first time I’ve heard teaching on this subject and my goodness it’s beautiful. I often hear christians reference that “we’re under grace” which is true, but the “freedom” many feel they have under grace, seems to stray them away from the importance/beauty/sanctity of liturgy, rituals or practices. I don’t believe grace has freed us from these practices but frees us from putting our worth and salvation in such practices. Why did we let go of such God fearing traditions once grace came? It’s -now- that we can do such things out of joy and reverence and -not- enslavement. To model the creation story in any way is so beautiful. 😭
Good comment. You might enjoy the following: th-cam.com/video/ue4Y4ZkyKuM/w-d-xo.html There is a whole lot more to this than we are being told. God bless you
Head coverings on women can be a boost to their beauty honestly. Same with hats. Honestly I wish more women would wear hats. It’s not like it’s seriously hiding something. It can be quite complementary to her hair and the rest of her outfit.
FrontLine I tend to agree yes. A christian young man would probably think a lady dressed in a modest long dress and head covered who loves the Lord in everything she does is far more attractive than the sensual girl who wants a man that can make her material dreams come true even though she attends church and plays the christian.
Head coverings on women are beautiful. About 1/3 of the ladies wear veils in our sanctuary. But I would encourage men to leave your hats in your vehicle (1 Cor. 11:1-17). Though some wrongfully interpret this passage as cultural, I see it as principal. Right after this Text we see communion, and that’s not cultural only. #HeadCoverings
Bill Rhetts I see a few men wearing long hair at church.....there is no debate about that in Scripture...it is a shame for them to wear long hair...also I see older women wear short hair...there is no debate about that either in Scripture....people like churchianity instead of christianity, they don't take the Bible seriously in these easy matters, let alone when it comes to fornication, adultery, theft, greed, gluttony, etc....Church elders often are goats catering to the goats, but the sheep of Christ hear the Shepherd's voice and they do what's right.
That's a really great explanation. I'm going to have to look into this again. I had gone from believing that a woman should cover her head, to a woman not having to cover her head; and now, I will probably just have to restudy all this again. He has given me some things to think about.
Holistic....the safest thing to do is wear head covering, there is absolutely no harm in doing so and actually it helps with a modest attitude that christian women should have all the time.
You also have to consider that a lot of us haven't grown up covering our heads. It's not like we all choose not to. You also have to consider the point of the situation in Corinth. Prostitutes were the ones who did intricate hairstyles to attract men. In Nigeria and Africa at large, intricate hairstyles are a staple of our culture. Always have been. Grown woman or child. For now I'm on the side that this has a good amount to do with cultural context. But if the spirit moves you to adopt this, praise God.
It's amazing that Nigeria at large practices head covering which i love but here in East Africa in Kenya it is not practiced at all. I love seeing deeper life church in Nigeria with all the women covered. Such a great sight.

Elio Puyol there really is no debate at all here, it is simply elders caving in to the culture and twisting Scripture to accomodate because they are often too weak to make their own wives and daughters wear head coverings...let alone tell the women of their congregations....weak men. RC Sproul said it so well here.
Fascinating how men love scriptures when it pertains to women. Putting rules on women has always been a blessing for many men. Many religions believe in the head covering more than in the blood of Jesus. And seeing it so vividly in the Slavik culture, it’s truly sad. It’s like keys into heaven. Cover your head woman, and all your sins are forgiven! Faith saves not works. There is a reason God torn that veil in half when Jesus died. Our only hope is Jesus and our forgiveness is only through His blood. I’m saying this because many religious groups find these “substitutes” to holiness. I've been covering for church for close to 2 years. I believe I'm the only one of 2K attending service on Sundays at my church, and do not care what anyone thinks. I DO care that I'm submitting to His word, and it makes me FEEL better too.....just something about it between modesty, and even an added layer of feeling beautiful. It's also less distracting!
Glad I stumbled on this. I took a good hard look at this some weeks back. This edict has nothing to do with the culture in which you live. Ladies, when you're praying or prophesying you absolutely need to have you head covered with a veil. Verse 16 is rather emphatic.
@@TheLightShines @1 Corinthians 13:4-8 It doesn't matter anywhere. You wanna know something? All these ladies think they are going to heaven and most of them are not, says the Lord of hosts. At the very least, many are going to lose reward for all that prophesying and teaching they did because of their disobedience in this. They were not prophesying, praying, and teaching with a whole heart for God. If they were they would be veiled. Just look at them. Rebellious and belligerent over a veil?? One day I just sat and thought about how would I feel about this if I were a woman and you know what I concluded? I concluded I would absolutely love to do this. Why? Because I delight in the law of God is why. I now delight in doing everything God says is why. All of Christ and none of me. But not these ladies. They are rebels and selfish to their core. The are fundamentally different from me internally. Only now am I starting to realize how much I have grown in the Lord and it is marvelous. I would not even want to know such ladies. Would not even want them around me.
@@out42c In Jesus' day, men wore the tallit, a prayer shawl with which they covered their heads when praying in the synagogue. This dates from back in the Old Testament. Did Jesus wear the tallit? Possibly.
If wearing a head covering (i.e. hat, scarf, or wrap) means my focus is on all things of God & not myself AND I’m not the object of some man’s attention or lust then YES, I have no problem with wearing a head covering. Besides that, I love hats anyway!
The issue is not lust. The issue is God's glory and Christ's headship. The woman shows the glory of man. The man shows the glory of God. The man must have his head uncovered in order to not hide God's glory.
Some have taken issue with the fact that the Greek word used for covering in verse 15 (περιβόλαιον) is a different word than the form of the word used for veiling/covering in verses 5-7 and 13 (κατακαλύπτω), the latter of which means "to cover wholly" or "to veil". Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, John W. Keddie, contended that if simply any hair were the covering Paul was talking about, then verse 6 would read "For if the women have no hair on her head, let her also be shorn", rendering the passage to be nonsensical.
You must not as a christian rejects some parts of the Scripture. People are so wise nowadays with strong explanation. But i believe if it is in Bible I must follow it.
@@thabisokhotseng8361 We're not rejecting scripture. The principle still applies, but we have to realize that Paul's target audience affects the way he writes, and here it seems likely that he is writing to a church filled with former prostitutes who are being taught to cast off every aspect of their former lives by changing the way that they present themselves to show that they belong to God
I thinking of starting this journey of covering head....and also I wanna join the Orthodox church but I don't know where to start from... Any suggestion for the site I can follow please.
Lydia kiteme I’m also thinking of joining an Orthodox church. My only thought is that you might try different ones. Some are very ethnic ( formed for recent immigrants) and some are more oriented to outreach. There is the OCA American Orthodox Church founded in Alaska by Russian missionaries in the 1700’s. And then the Greek and Russian branches that also have congregations here in the States. There is a whole other group the oriental Orthodox (rather than Eastern Orthodox) that are Coptic? I think!?
Deepest Silence I have also decided to wear a head covering after researching the Scriptures too! Us women need to be obedient and modest. If you rely on your own works and merits to get you to heaven you are doomed because The word says that our works are filthy rags. like RC said, the burden of proof always rests on the person saying, oh this was just a religious custom of the day. I have this passage is an intricate chiastic structure. Meaning Paul spent some time composing this passage. The bottom line is trust Scripture first, instead of a whole culture who disavows the Word of God.
Corinthians 11verse 6 is the key verse. If a woman has no covering while assembling, or praying, then her hair should be cut off. So hair and the covering cannot be the same thing. Indeed, this is proven by the man not to have a 'covering' on his head when praying to God. If hair was the 'covering' then he would have to cut his hair off each time before praying, or of course, be bald.
Praise be to God. Many people are understanding the word of God through UTube. The true church of God covers the head since the beginning of the church, that is as Christ left it to the Apostles.
If head covering would be a practice of the Church then why it is that it was only tacked in Corinthians and not to the many epistles of Paul to the Churches?
Hi Aaron, in verse 15 Paul lets us know that it was the practice of every church (more on that here: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/why-head-coverings-reason-4-church-practice ) So he likely dealt with it in 1 Corinthians likely because he was asked about it by a letter from them. He said he wanted them to "understand" (v. 3) so they likely needed correction or clarification on this issue, especially since some in the congregation may have been contentious about it arguing that it was not required (v.16). The letters of Paul deal with specific issues, which is why you don't see it in more letters.
@@headcovering If it's meant as a symbol of submission, then each culture would have its own symbol. No need to go adopting a symbol from another culture which makes no sense in ours.
I was confused about this at first. However, I started to Cover my Head. Because I would rather be wrong and have my Head Covered, then to be wrong and not have it Covered. If that makes any sense? I now believe that Women are to Cover their Heads while Praying or Prophesying, so I do Cover.
Ive been covering for several weeks now. After reading 1 Corinthians i felt a conviction to do so. And honestly i love it. There is a biblical hierarchy and im not ashamed to show my submission to Christ or my husband for that matter. I think feminism is garbage and destroying the family and i truly believe that's why so many are either against it or like me, had no clue that this was tradition for women in many if not all cultures, not all that long ago. I wear a head cover daily whether im just running errands or going to church or at home cleaning. I want to be more devout and follow God's word entirely to the best of my ability. This is an easy one to follow and i have no shame on doing so. My hair is long (almost to my waist) and ive heard others say that's all i need but I dont get that interpretation ehen i read Paul's letter to the church of Corinth and i dont understand why some are so adamantly against what other women choose to do or how other women choose to follow. I dont believe im in any kind of wrong for wanting and choosing to wear a head covering and it drives me crazy when others tell me i dont need to wear one. My heart says otherwise.
Orthodox Christian here! Simple fact is that head coverings were the norm up until the 1960s when in an erroneous and demonic way women were fooled into thinking the head covering was something that lowered women. In fact it is something that honors women. All one needs to do is to look at Orthodox Iconography depicting faithful women throughout the centuries, and 99% are covered. Very rarely is there no covering. I could say a lot more! But I’ll keep it short for this comment. May God continue to enlighten people towards the Truth of Christ which meets every facet of our lives.
First of all, RC says, in order to know, scripture, really know it, I have to go out and purchase his book on the subject. I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and by the grace of God I live in a country with the literacy rate is above 95%, and even before you could get the Bible free on your smart phone, in the country I live in you could go buy a complete one at Walmart for five dollars. As a result and once again by the grace of God, I’ve read the Bible covered cover between 50 and 60 times, and one of the things I did not get out of it was that I needed RC‘s book to understand what I was reading. As I’ve said before, I have no problem with the doctrines of God sovereignty calling election. I believe in these things as much as any of these men on this panel. My problem is, and it could be my imagination, though I don’t know why I would naturally think this but, every time I stop to listen to a so-called Neo Calvinist they come across as arrogant and grumpy. I will never call myself a Calvinist, though I believe in, the aforementioned doctrines, simply because of what John Calvin allowed the city fathers of Geneva do to Michael Servetus.
@willardswelding7243 Here at HCM, we do not promote one specific denomination. This is one video out of many other videos, quotes, and articles that are posted for their interest value, and because they support headcovering. We agree that the Bible is our sole authority, and that is where we get the headcovering teaching.
I am not trying to start an argument, only interested in the truth of the matter. With that said, can anyone enlighten me on what 1st Corinthians 11:16 is saying? I always understood Paul to be saying in this verse that we shouldn't argue about head coverings as "we" nor "the churches of God" have this "custom". Not only does Paul call head covering a "custom", which to me says it is not a command of God, but he also wrote that the rest of the church does not do this. So if it were truly a command of God for women to cover their heads then why did Paul acknowledge and seem to accept that the rest of the global church did not follow this practice. To me these verses speak of various things, but Paul's point is concluded by verse 16, where he appears to reaffirm that head coverings is a cultural custom not a command of God. For anyone who is willing to help provide insight into this, I thank you.
I heard another commenter on the head covering issue and he explained it by noting that in that city where Paul directed the letter, a highborn man would cover his head with his fancy robes to show status. And slave women were not allowed to cover their heads, unlike freeborn women. So Paul split the difference and equalized the class structure in the church by having all women cover their heads (now slave women, the lowest in society, are seen as peers to higher born women). None of the men were to cover their heads, and now highborn men cannot flaunt their status with lower born men. Like what James talks about in treating the high and low born as the same in the church, not preferencing someone based on their worldly status. Today we are so focused on the genders of the parties that maybe we have lost touch that there were other crucial components of culture, like status. Currently most of us in the West live in societies with much greater class mobility and we celebrate flaunting status in many quarters. It may be lost on us how in a more rigid society status markers could cause irreparable divisions and Paul was working out a peaceful, reasonable solution.
A woman hair can become her idol as well and she not even know it. I was not in a church when God began to draw me to His Word. Through His Word and the Holy Spirit leading, my life was FLIPPED. I have been wearing a head covering for almost 6 years now, no cutting or dyeing my hair as well and I love it. Modest attire also which helps even our beloved brothers in Christ Jesus not to have to deal with so much as well. They have it hard enough in this world with the way women dress. Not saying this is what YOU should do but sharing my walk only. God bless each of you as you walk your faith out in fear and trembling. Shalom and love.
Promoters of head coverings sometimes say western Christians stopped wearing head coverings because of feminism but I've been reading Richard Baxter's book 'A Christian Directory'. Richard Baxter lived in the 1600s, well before feminism and he wrote in this book that he believed head coverings are a cultural issue.
Yes, the cultural view first popped up in the 1500's. We say it was the 'dominant' practice until the 20th century, recognizing a minority held to the cultural view at different times and in different places. But it was the unanimous view for 3/4 of church history.
I am a firm believer in head covering, and am rather new to it...I am struggling, however, with certain teachings that state that women should cover at all times, (as opposed to only in the assembly), the reason being because we are to pray without ceasing ( if we live a lifestyle of abiding in Messiah, we are in essence praying without ceasing). But isn’t this mandate from Paul also for men.? Aren’t men also to pray without ceasing? And if that is true, and it is, then are we saying that men should never cover their heads? Men should never wear caps, hats, kippahs ( as some Messianic Jewish men do?) ... It would help me to have clarity on this.
That’s a good point about men never covering their heads at all. Ha! Hats for men, until recently, were a sign of status and their profession. Removing the hat was an act of humility. Christ died with his head uncovered. I cover often, mostly, practically with a hat. I don’t think you have to be over the top by keeping your head covered every single minute. I think it’s more a requirement in public worship. Back in the day proper ladies always wore a hat and, in ancient times, covered their heads with a veil, to show that they were married. Dr. Michael Heiser had a very good explanation of these verses. He mentioned that hair, at that time, was considered part of the reproductive system. ... so for fertility reasons, women were supposed to have long hair and the hair was considered part of their reproductive system so they would keep it covered. Men were supposed to have shorthair because long hair would interfere with their virility.
The distinction you have to make is this: Are you covering your head for spiritual or for practical reasons of utility? You can run around with a construction hat at a construction site all day, and it won't taint your manliness. But you can't wear a veil and pray for even one minute. The take away is this: You don't have to worry about headwear and hats that are worn for practical reasons
it means when praying publicly. read it again. Do you think it should have been written: Cover your head when praying and cover your head when prophesying. So it said: Cover your head when praying (publicly) or prophesying. It was on the subject of being out in the open. It is not like they were being corrected in their innermost rooms. They were being corrected publicly.
yes finally someone who wonders the same thing as me! i also don't expect all women back then to be overly critical of anyone ever seeing their hair.. seems more like they just threw their scarf on when they prayed.
@@ohthankg-dforthebourgeoisi9800 There's nothing in scripture to support the idea that long hair interferes with a man's virility! Lol 😄 In fact, several Biblical characters had long hair. And, nature doesn't seem to teach us that men's hair doesn't grow long, so what did the Apostle Paul mean - 1 Corinthians 11:14?
By covering their heads Christian women give witness to the world that they are submissive to the Word of God as well as their husbands which is unlike the world. But ofcourse with out true inward submission to both God and husbands just outside covering of the heads is mere fooling of the world and a hypocrisy. God desires truth in our hearts also. Adam also appealed to creation when he said to God “it was that woman you gave me” to excuse his own participation in sin that caused the fall and then trying to run away from answering to God for his behavior.
He was saying that if you’re uncertain whether something in the Bible is a commandment of God or whether it’s optional, it’s best to treat it as a commandment. Because it’s better to always do something that’s optional, than to not do something that’s a commandment.
@@danparks8290 Hello, here is a response from the HCM website to the question of whether or not long hair is the covering required by Scripture when a woman is praying or prophesying: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/is-a-womans-long-hair-her-covering
Hi Alexander, thanks for sharing your thoughts. We do take a different stance than you do and see the appeal to nature (15) and custom (2,16) as two distinct reasons why head covering isn't cultural. To understand why we come to that conclusion you can visit this page (and go through the 5 reasons): headcoveringmovement.com/study
The majority of Biblical scholars have held that "verses 4-7 refer to a literal veil or covering of cloth" for "praying and prophesying" and verse 15 to refer to long hair of a woman for modesty.[4] Although the head covering was practiced by most Christian women until the latter part of the 20th century,[5] it is now a minority practice among contemporary Christians in the West, though it continues to be the normal practice in other parts of the world, such as Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Ethiopia, India, Pakistan, and South Korea" Read yourself rich folks at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_head_covering
The issue at Corinth was not whether long or short hair was an acceptable covering, but whether or not the head was covered with a veil or hat. This is proven by the following: ----"Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head" (v. 4). The distinction here is obviously not between short and long-haired brethren, but rather between men with covered and uncovered heads. Contentious sisters were provided with an alter native: either cover the head or be shorn or shaven ( v. 6). But if long hair were the intended covering, then the Apostle's alternative is meaningless. "Cover" ( -ed, -ing) in the A.V. disguises the fact that different words for "to cover" are used in the Greek text. The distinction between two of these, "katakalupto" and "peribolaion" proves that a veil or head covering, and not long hair is intended. These words are as follows: "Katakalupto" ( 'kata' = 'fully'; 'kalupto' = 'to cover up'), "to cover fully" ( Yg). This word occurs through out verses 5- 13 and is translated "veil" in the R.S.V.; Nestle and Marshall's "Interlinear Greek-English New Testament'' and many other versions. These translations make it plain that the issue relates to a head covering, not the growth of hair, long or short. "Peribolaion" ('peri' = 'around'; 'ballo' = 'to throw, cast'), "something cast around" ( Y g). The long hair of a woman is her glory - like a mantle cast around ( v. 15) .(8) But this is not to be displayed in the assembly of believers before the presence of God. The intended covering in the ecclesial meeting is the "katakalupto" ---- the head covering or veil. When Paul refers to the long hair given to the woman as her glory, he is drawing a parallel with what "nature" or common-sense suggests. This can be seen from the following: MAN long hair is degrading. WOMAN long hair is her glory. Therefore. a parallel is evident [natural] with the spiritual a man ought not to cover his head a woman ought to cover her head. 4. The mistaken interpretation (9) evident in the question results from reading verse 15 as if it were the conclusion of the argument rather than an additional appeal to common-sense by a parallel: what "nature itself teaches.".
Head Coverings 'Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God. ' 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

The relationship of the man and woman are principial. The long hair of the woman is the natural and testimonial, and the covering is preceptual when custom requires the practice.

The larger problem is not women worshipping without a head covering, but the lack of submission manifested in the marriage. Both egalitarianism and complementarianism promote contention against patriarchal headship. Correcting a contentious wife is like trying to stop the wind or grasp oil in your bare hand. A husband cannot count n the church for support, but rather the church will enable and support rebellion in a wife by condemning the husband’s leadership and love. The worship practice is unscriptural because the life practice is unscriptural. The church has been loathe to correct feminism n the church and thereby undercutting the structure of the home. Husbands are generally condemned as tyrannical by the church for the practice of loving headship and then condemned for abdication of responsibility when they don’t. IOWs - in the eyes of the church the husband is the root cause of his own sin and his wife’s sin. This acquiescence to feminism places false blame on men and robs women of a needful admonition toward repentance. Nurturing feminine rebellion the church is reaping a harvest of covenant breaking and become less masculine just when masculinity is most needful.
John MacArthur believes taking the Mark of beast is forgivable!!! I have zero respect. The Bible clearly states there is no forgiveness. Leading people astray
It is important to be modest and not draw attention to yourself. In a culture where people do not cover their heads and you walk around that way, you would indeed be drawing attention.
Unless we are doing so in obedience to God; in that case, it wouldn't matter if we do happen to draw attention to ourselves since we have as our motive to honor God first, before pleasing man. Jesus said to be a light set on a hill, and to be salt that is salty. Sometimes, we will stand out no matter what, as we obey the Lord. For a biblical case for headcovering, here are some very good articles that have answers to many objections and questions: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles-series
15But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. Clearly here we see that a women's overing is her long hair. For if a man have long hair it is to his shame. Again, it is hair Paul is talking about. Puting a cap on or making a scarf your overing, and it makes you feel more in submission to the Word and your husband, then do that. But i am surprised the great man of God missed these verses in the only chapter that deals with this. As a whole, we need to look to Peter when it declares to us that our adornment should be a meek and quiet Spirit, a life in faith and love, trusting our father explicitly in and for everything. And being respectful and honoring our husbands.

How is it going now? It took me at least a year to feel comfortable wearing head coverings. If she's still uncomfortable, perhaps it would help to talk to her about what wifely submission means more broadly, and why she refuses to submit to you as the husband in this way. In my case there was fear of rejection from other women combined with not enough respect for my husband. And it took multiple instances of my husband gently bringing it up. The logic clicked but the emotion took its time to follow.
It feels like women can only be good enough or Holy enough for God to use if they only a wear veil for God to seem Holy or good enough to use, or if that brings some king of reverance from the outside versus the heart. Good subject
There’s not much at all that I disagree(ed) with RC on but I guess this is one. But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God. I think that verse is taking about the head covering issue in the churches. There’s no specific requirements about covering the head.
That's an important verse. The closest antecedent to custom is "women praying uncovered". That's the custom they don't have, which confirms what he had been defending up to that point, rather than contradicting it. We have a whole video on this verse here: th-cam.com/video/WsubZywqOeU/w-d-xo.html
Jesus said " If you love me you will keep my commandments ". If you love Jesus you will definitely cover your head ( and will keep other commandments too)
The covering is the woman’s hair. The hair only, NOT a cloth, hat or veil. The issue was with woman that shaved their heads not covering their head with a veil. Read it for yourselves and quit letting ppl lead you down the wrong path or erroneous worship. Paul was referring to how women of the day wore their hair. 1Cor11:6, shorn or shaved hair is contrasted with a woman being "covered." Vs15 makes it CLEAR that the subject is HAIR: "But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering."
Hi Tony, we affirm that a woman's hair is her covering. There are two coverings taught in this passage. He appeals to her natural covering to argue for a symbolic covering when she engages in worship (praying and prophesying). More on that here: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/why-head-coverings-reason-3-nature
@@headcovering Well some contend Paul required women to wear veils because it was the custom of the day for women to wear veils in public places of worship. This is NOT true! Let's get our facts straight. Smith's Dictionary of the Bible article "Veil" gives us the answer. "In ancient times, the veil was adopted only in exceptional cases, either as an article of ornamental dress or by betrothed maidens in the presence of their husbands, especially at the time of the wedding or women of loose character for purposes of concealment Gen 38:14- But generally speaking, women both married and unmarried appeared in public with their faces exposed, both among the Jews and among the Egyptians and Assyrians, as proved by the absence of the veil in the sculptures & paintings of their time period. It was NOT customary for women to wear veils in Paul's day. It is interesting to note that the fallen church in Rev 17, commands its women to wear coverings over shaven heads during worship. What Paul taught is this: as man is the head of woman, it is improper for men to have a covering in a religious service as a symbol of subjection (I Cor. 11:4). The only exception was long hair in the Nazarite vow, a token of subjection to God for a special time (Num. 6:5). Men are otherwise commanded: "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?" (vs 14). Men wearing long hair, a fad with our younger generation, are effeminate & shall not inherit God's Kingdom! "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her HAIR is given her as a covering" (vs 15). Notice! Paul speaks of LONG HAIR as the "covering," or veil. The Greek word for "covering" in vs 15 means "veil." See the margin of the KJV. So the covering is not some hat, or piece of cloth. Paul does not say that women must wear something over their head. Instead, he says: "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for covering." Because "long hair" is mentioned, some are afraid to cut their hair at all. The text doesn't read uncut hair; it reads only "long hair." Long hair is an indication that a woman is willing to be in subjection to a man, and that she acknowledges the special need for protection by angels - beyond the ordinary protection which angels give to men (vs 10). Hair, cut long enough to look feminine and honorable, prob about shoulder length, or longer would satisfy the standard. If a woman wears her hair so short that it looks like a man's, then she ought to be shorn - shaven - the symbol of a fallen woman. To be "shorn" (vs 6) means to be closely clipped. Some small sects argue that any cutting or hair means to be shorn. This is also NOT true. Properly cut long hair is not shorn hair. There is NOT a Bible command anywhere against cutting hair within the length which looks feminine & honorable. Many women today are, however, wearing their hair too short. They are not allowing their hair to be "a covering" (vs15). It is a woman's long hair that is her covering not some piece of cloth to hide a short hair-do.
@@tonywiggins8073 You mean to say 2000 years of church elders interpreted these Scriptures wrong until feminism brought "enlightenment" into the churches about this practice of head covering? I don't think so, I'm with the overwhelming majority of church elders who interpreted these Scriptures to mean women should cover their heads (not just wear long hair). If you think you're wiser than most church elders in all christian history, I think you better examine your faith. This was not even up for debate until feminism came around, seriously.
@@christianmama2441 Well then you fell into the trap as those from 2000 yrs ago to present did! Ppl who misinterpreted & mistranslate scripture give us cause to be as the Bereans of Berea to search out the scriptures and make sure these/those things are true and if you can see that vs 15 (as I mentioned) where God’s Word tells us what a woman’s covering is! So examine that! Her hair is her glory AND HER COVERING! I even went and gave you extra information about women who shaved their hair (IT WAS TO BE A SHAME TO THEM). So the one who needs to examine their faith is you! You better make sure the things you have been told are true - your eternal life could depend on it! It doesn’t matter wha the overwhelming majority say - if they’re wrong they’re wrong! Just like Changing God’s Sabbath to Sunday over 1000 yrs ago. You can read from Gen to Rev nowhere does it authorize man to chg the Sabbath to Sunday! Ppl who observe xmas are not honoring Christ if it’s of pagan origins. He specifically forbids us to worship Him that way - Same goes for Easter, we are suppose to observe His ordained Passover, NOT Easter! Examine that!
I'm wondering if it's true then would a woman who does not have her head covered be able to perform the miracle of healing?

Galatians 4:12
Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles-free from those laws.
Cynthia Hunter he means that now he has forgiveness of sin. He also said he keeps the law and had learned from the law.

Head covering had never even crossed my mind until recently as I started to investigate Christian traditions outside my own. It immediately struck me as endearing, modest and respectful of something divine - almost as if it captured a feminine beauty beyond anything I'd experienced in my culture.

Galatians 4:12
Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles-free from those laws.
Galatians 4:10-12 KJVS
[10] Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

Feminist infiltration
Yes evil Jezebels

Wonderful !

For her hair is given to her for a covering."
This is different word from the others for "cover"= "peribolaion," that which is tossed around or a mantel that can be thrown around the shoulders and body (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around).
Also Genesis 20:16 says in the Hebrew
Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this is "a covering for her eyes" (to put back on her wedding covering) you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked.
So our long hair is our covering? I am not sure I actually understand what he said. But I want to. We cover our hair? Or our hair is a covering?

Ridiculous.

How can anyone listen to this?? Why wont anyone listen, it is not a custom, not cultural, just shows that people don't study from the sources rather they would study from the product only.
The head covered has zero to do with anything on her head or hair, the covering is Yeshua messiah, its talking about the fallen angels as it was in the days of Noah Jesus spoke of in the gospels, when the angels seduced the daughters of men, the (sons of God) that brought about the nephilim, naphi in the Hebrew, to keep their heads covered because they're coming back and the ministering spirits are watching, so are the fallen angels who were with Satan during his overthrow.
Rev. 12 when Micheal kicks Satan out of heaven.
The man to not have long hair is speaking that it would be a perverted act, angel and man intimately Paul said no, they're coming back for the daughters of men as Jesus said as part of how it was in the days of Noah, and will be and people are listening down these rabbit holes thinking it had to do with 💇 HAIR!!!!! 🤯😔
Its in the Bible, Yeshua told us all things. No excuse but to start today.

Thank you RC Sproul for your humility to speak unpopular truth to a wayward church! You've been an integral part in my wife deciding to stop dishonoring Jesus by covering her head.

Jewish men wear a prayer shawl (tallit) when praying in the synagogue. And what about the yarmulke?
Enjoy the study Greg. headcoveringmovement.com/study is the page we direct all people to.
Holistic....the safest thing to do is wear head covering, there is absolutely no harm in doing so and actually it helps with a modest attitude that christian women should have all the time.
It's so ironical that here, in Nigeria, our youngsters are stopping head covering citing Western practice of not covering.
Then you should take stand and teach them about head covering (as per 1 Corinthians 11), and God's spirit will help you to teach them.
The churches are misleading God's people and should repent. The bible is the word of God. To disobey plain commandments of the bible is suicidal.
It's amazing that Nigeria at large practices head covering which i love but here in East Africa in Kenya it is not practiced at all. I love seeing deeper life church in Nigeria with all the women covered. Such a great sight.

Elio Puyol there really is no debate at all here, it is simply elders caving in to the culture and twisting Scripture to accomodate because they are often too weak to make their own wives and daughters wear head coverings...let alone tell the women of their congregations....weak men. Glad I stumbled on this. I took a good hard look at this some weeks back. This edict has nothing to do with the culture in which you live. Ladies, when you're praying or prophesying you absolutely need to have you head covered with a veil. Verse 16 is rather emphatic.
Is this in a church setting or anywhere or home
@@out42c so then that means a man can never wear a hat then...

Principle &/ customary. I love how RC Sproul laid that out.

Well you know our take :) If you'd like to study the topic for yourself here's our guided study: headcoveringmovement.com/study
Hi Aaron, in verse 15 Paul lets us know that it was the practice of every church (more on that here: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/why-head-coverings-reason-4-church-practice )
So he likely dealt with it in 1 Corinthians likely because he was asked about it by a letter from them. He said he wanted them to "understand" (v. 3) so they likely needed correction or clarification on this issue, especially since some in the congregation may have been contentious about it arguing that it was not required (v.16). The letters of Paul deal with specific issues, which is why you don't see it in more letters.
So only one mention is suspicious? We wear them for authority, and also for the angels.
@@headcovering If it's meant as a symbol of submission, then each culture would have its own symbol. No need to go adopting a symbol from another culture which makes no sense in ours.

I will always not agree to cut off some verses but appreciate some. If the bible is truly the Word of God we must obey / follow all scriptures.
It is
Orthodox Christian here!

Good on ya brother Sproul :-)
When Sproul said buy his book and everyone laughed 😂

But it was the unanimous view for 3/4 of church history.
it is frustrating when these issues are almost completely ignored in our day, to day lives..

There's nothing in scripture to support the idea that long hair interferes with a man's virility! Lol 😄
In fact, several Biblical characters had long hair.

@@danparks8290 Hello, here is a response from the HCM website to the question of whether or not long hair is the covering required by Scripture when a woman is praying or prophesying: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/is-a-womans-long-hair-her-covering
The majority of Biblical scholars have held that "verses 4-7 refer to a
literal veil or covering of cloth" for "praying and prophesying" and
verse 15 to refer to long hair of a woman for modesty.[4]
Although the
head covering was practiced by most Christian women until the latter
part of the 20th century,[5]
it is now a minority practice among
contemporary Christians in the West, though it continues to be the
normal practice in other parts of the world, such as Romania, Russia,
Ukraine, Ethiopia, India, Pakistan, and South Korea"
Read yourself rich folks at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_head_covering
The issue at Corinth was not whether long or short hair was an acceptable
covering, but whether or not the head was covered with a veil or hat. This
is proven by the following:
----"Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth
his head" (v. 4). The distinction here is obviously not between short and
long-haired brethren, but rather between men with covered and uncovered
heads.
Contentious sisters were provided with an alter native: either cover the
head or be shorn or shaven ( v. 6). But if long hair were the intended
covering, then the Apostle's alternative is meaningless.
"Cover" ( -ed, -ing) in the A.V. disguises the fact that different words for
"to cover" are used in the Greek text.
The distinction between two of these, "katakalupto" and "peribolaion" proves
that a veil or head covering, and not long hair is intended. These words are
as follows:
"Katakalupto" ( 'kata' = 'fully'; 'kalupto' = 'to cover up'), "to cover
fully" ( Yg). This word occurs through out verses 5- 13 and is translated
"veil" in the R.S.V.; Nestle and Marshall's "Interlinear Greek-English New
Testament'' and many other versions.
These translations make it plain that the issue relates to a head covering,
not the growth of hair, long or short.
"Peribolaion" ('peri' = 'around'; 'ballo' = 'to throw, cast'), "something
cast around" ( Y g). The long hair of a woman is her glory - like a mantle
cast around ( v. 15) .(8) But this is not to be displayed in the assembly of
believers before the presence of God. The intended covering in the ecclesial
meeting is the "katakalupto" ---- the head covering or veil.
When Paul refers to the long hair given to the woman as her glory, he is
drawing a parallel with what "nature" or common-sense suggests.
This can be seen from the following:
MAN long hair is degrading.
WOMAN long hair is her glory.
Therefore. a parallel is evident [natural] with the spiritual a man ought
not to cover his head a woman ought to cover her head.
4. The mistaken interpretation (9) evident in the question results from
reading verse 15 as if it were the conclusion of the argument rather than an
additional appeal to common-sense by a parallel: what "nature itself
teaches.".
I almost feel like women wearing head coverings is a sort of virtue signal..

Head Coverings
'Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. '

You see, when the angels see someone praying..if the 'someone' is praying..and the someone has on a head covering..the angel says to their self..:this is a woman under submission to her head"..(if a married woman her head is her husband..if a single or widowed woman her head is Christ)..and if the someone praying also has long hair..the angel says "this is a covered woman with long hair", and her prayers are sent up to the Lord.

Question: Starting around 4:00, RC gives three approaches for determining whether submission and covering are principle or customary (1. custom/custom, 2. principle/custom, 3. principle/principle). I believe that anyone reading 1 Cor 11 and elsewhere in good faith has to reject #1. I wish he would have given his rationale for holding to #3 over #2 though. What is the argument that #2 is incorrect, particularly in light of Paul's comment that an uncovered wife dishonors her "head"?

Hi Mason, here's our article on the holy kiss: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/head-covering-and-the-holy-kiss
Hope it helps.
The relationship of the man and woman are principial. The long hair of the woman is the natural and testimonial, and the covering is preceptual when custom requires the practice.
Corinthians 11:6 is the key verse. If she has no covering while assembling, then her hair should be cut off. So hair and the covering cannot be the same thing.
Indeed, this is proven by the man not to have a 'covering' on his head when praying to God.
If hair was the 'covering' then he would have to cut off his hair each time before prayers, or of course, be bald........{;o;}
Yes! Amen. X
Hopefully the practice of head covering can help restore biblical gender relationships.
I wish you could have let us hear john Macarthur's response.
The full length Q&A is linked in the description.
Hi, Heidi, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Here is a video from this channel which explains why we (at the Head Covering Movement) believe the head covering is supposed to be a piece of fabric, as opposed to long hair:

Absolutely true but getting my wife to wear a hat is nigh on impossible.
Ha, I see a correlation 😂😂😂
Get a new wife
It feels like women can only be good enough or Holy enough for God to use if they only a wear veil for God to seem Holy or good enough to use, or if that brings some king of reverance from the outside versus the heart. Good subject
We are not made holy by our works. (Titus 3:5-6). I've learned to cover out of obedience. But Christ alone makes me holy, not my covering.
The culture of the Corinthians was for men to cover their heads and the women didn't. Man is the glory of God and the glory of man is woman.
My only question to those who decide it isnt meant to be transcultural, is this: What would you lose if you DID cover your hair?
Smith's Dictionary of the Bible article "Veil"
gives us the answer.
Instead, he says: "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for covering."
Because "long hair" is mentioned, some are afraid to cut their hair at all.
