    Idk if you'll read this, Allyn, but because of you my lawn looks soooooooooo much better than it ever has!
    It looks lush and full, beautifully green! Before, it was patchy, weedy, pale. Ugly.
    I still have some clover, a few dandelions and some other weeds but I haven't used any weed-killers. Simply by mowing at least 2 x a week the dandelions are rarely seen. Every time I see a yellow flower against that deep green carpet - off with it's head.
    Along with frequent mowing, Milo has been applied 3 x since spring.
    Five weeks ago I bought a Sun Joe dethatcher. Amazed at how much that little guy pulled out of the lawn! Tried to use a manual dethatching rake and hurt my shoulder. The Sun Joe was easily worth the $100. After all the thatch was cleaned up I Milo-ed and over-seeded.
    A long slow sprinkle 1 or 2 x/week mixed with daily shorts for the new seed.
    That's it.
    Mow. Milo. Water. Dethatch. Overseed.
    Next on the list: tackle the weeds. Bet I'll find a tip or 2 in TLCN videos.
    Thanks so much, Allyn! I'm actually proud of my lawn. It's the nicest looking one on the street, in this little working-class neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest.
    ~Enjoy The Mow~

    Hey Allyn, things are cooling down here in Michigan with some patchy frost forecasted. I threw'er down yesterday for the 3rd time this year and this being the first full year of using Milo. While I'm dealing with major clover and ground ivy issues, I have definitely noticed a thicker and much greener appearance of my lawn over the neighbors. Also started using the N-Ext products ( RGS, Air-8, Microgreene). Threw down some pre emergent yesterday also.Thanks for the videos and all your advice. Can't believe I've lived in Chicago and here in Michigan my entire life of nearly 60 years and never heard of Milo until I came upon your TH-cam videos last year.Thanks again bud. You're awesome.

    Great vid Allyn, I appreciate you taking the time at the end of the vid to be upfront and honest about our usage of Ferts and how they can effect the environment!! That is super important to push the fact the we all need to be good stewards of the environment and not go crazy all the time with heavy apps that either do not get used by the plant and or being wasted to runoff and leaching. I think this is one of your better vids in a while. I love that you have true passion to help others while teaching responsibility at the same time. Great Job! Chad NY

    My dad used to work for MMSD before they became privatized. He would bring home big clear garbage bags like you find in park garbage cans of Milorganite. I hated those days because it meant I was going to be busy pushing the spreader around the yard all weekend. We sure had a great looking lawn though.

  • @jrrn96

    I had a new home built and moved in November 2017 so this was the first year I had with a lawn that's an average size yard completely sod and I put between 7 and 10 bags of milo down to try and build up a layer of success along with bags of lawn soil to take a poorly graded fill of huge chopped cinderblocks, rocks, and boulders into a smoother yard which seems like I've helped it maybe 10%, but many people say I have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood, multiple people have said that and one guy was stopping and admiring the front lawn while I was walking out the garage he also said that too so it works great, but I wont be satisfied until its without the holes, lumps, and patches.

    Good call on letting people know to calm it down. Too much fert can wash down storm drains and cause serious problems in bodies of water.

    I buy compressed pine pellets (horse bedding) and use it for cat litter. After it is used, I sprinkle the sawdust on the LAWN because the material will help with the breakdown of grass clippings and thatch. Just put out a little lime to keep the soil from turning acidic... OK, So I have Trailer Park Milo and no Pink Flamingos.

      whats interesting is Milorganite is not really a stand alone product though it is often used as a stand alone. I use a variety of products and I have a lawn care company fertilize my lawn. With that being said I use maybe 1/4 of what the Milorganite bag says and my lawn is a dark healthy green.
      Most people want a miracle in a bag and most of the videos on TH-cam misrepresent Milorganite as a miracle cure. People should love their yard enough to research the lawn and realize what works for one lawn may not work for another so they need to be patient and experiement here and there with different things and use milorganite as a secondary fertilizer to get that perfect yard.
      Nothing comes easy and lawns are not an exception.

    I applied 4 applications of Milo per year for 2 years. I did my soil test this past August and I have extremely high phosphorus. Ill cut back to 2 applications next year.

    • @jjlritchie
      @jjlritchie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's why you can't just ONLY throw down Milo, because the 4% phosphorus will build up over time. Keep in mind there's 0 potassium in Milo. Buy yourself some fert that has some potassium(K) in it and zero phosphorus.

    I was hoping to get another round of milo on my sod. It went in back in July. Milo in Aug, aerated and overseeded in Sept with more milo. Sadly it's all pretty much gone in my area, so it's Menards starter fert before winter gets here. Trying to fight off some rust that started spreading in my lawn. Have it mostly beaten into submission and I am hoping the starter fert is enough kick to finish the fight before winter.

    Another great video. Thanks for all the help. I can see what you mean about throwing down less. Over the fert blackout, that was 3 months and my lawn just started to look like it needed some a couple weeks before Oct. I was noticing more ground was showing on my bahia. I threw down Scotts starter fertilizer on that area of my lawn before the blackout and it really lasted a long time. I just carefully watered and mowed and it withstood the summer with no fertilizer at all. I just did spot weed control with Weed B Gone concentrate. Our water has some iron in it of around 4ppm. I wonder if that helps.? Whenever I water, it turns darker green for a while.

I used to live In Kansas and Nebraska and would find it for 8-9 bucks a bag out there at Menards or any other Hardware store. Came to Idaho and only find it at True Value. I went back to KS and NE to visit Family earlier this year and brought back tons of bags of Milo hahahah got it way cheaper out there. Idaho pisses me off sometimes.

    Hi Allyn.....HELP....I live in South Florida. The previous owner of the house I bought recently had heather's planted all along the front of the property . As you probably know, heather spreads like wildfire and it's growing all over my lawn. What do you recommend I use to kill the heather without killing the lawn? P.S. I've learned a lot from your videos.....on behalf of the rest of us lawn nuts in TH-cam land, thank you for all you do to help us !!!

    Allyn, Took your advice from your last email and bought the Walmart 10-10-10 fert but not sure of the setting on should use on my Scott’s rotary spreader for my 5,000 sq ft lawn. Any suggestions? Please advise. Live here in NW suburbs of Chicago and want to put this down soon.

      If I am not mistaken, it's a 40lb bag. Just use half a bag (20 lbs), spread evenly across your lawn. Start on a very low setting to test it. Use logic in your application... if it's coming out hot and heavy from the jump, dial it back. You will be fine!

    • @halhilmer2553
      @halhilmer2553 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Lawn Care Nut,
      So a dial setting of 3 or 4 should be adequate for this application? Don’t want to damage or burn my lawn.
      Love your channel and have shared it with others who ask why my lawn looks so nice. (I just don’t share your info with my next door neighbors! Ha-ha)

    • @TheLawnCareNut
      @TheLawnCareNut  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      start at the second to lowest setting, use your own visual logic to dial up or down from there.

    Speaking to my fellow friends in western Washington... WTF I couldn’t buy a bag if my life depended on it. Had to go 30 miles to grab the last bag at Ace because every Lowe’s was out. OMG peeps leave some for us procrastinators. Btw what’s the storage life for Milo? Thinking of buying a pallet when next shipment comes in. Lol

    I heard there was a shortage of miloganite. I'm from Schererville Indiana and it's sometimes hard to find it. Miloganite needs a need to invest on building a new fertilizer plant to keep up with demand.
