  • Create an inner shadow effect that gives the appearance as if the subject is carved into the surface.
This tutorial is for Inkscape version 0.92 and is intended to teach beginners how to use the software. Inkscape is a great free alternative to Illustrator and Corel Draw.

I think of myself as a beginner/intermediate Inkscape user and for me this was one of those videos, which you start watching thinking "Pfff, that's sooooo simple.. I can do that with a blink of an eye, why is he even recording this?"
But after few minutes it's "wait, why is he...
    ..what?
    Can you do that?!
How did he came up with this?!"
and I'm back to being just a humble padawan.

IF YOU WANT TO USE THIS METHOD ON A WORD, select the word => ungroup => select all the letters => object to path => select them all again => union (in the path section) => continue with the tutorial like you would with the letter

Richard, please help me with applying the inner shadow technique to a whole word. The written instructions below were derived directly from Nick's video for a single letter. I have no problem applying an inner shadow to a single letter (steps 7-21 below); however, when I incorporate your method for a whole word at the beginning (steps 1-6), I am unable to get it to work. I'm sure it is something about your method that I just don't understand, so I'm asking you to please re-write the instructions below with specific steps for a whole word.
      1. Select the word
      2. Ungroup*
      3. Select all the letters**
      4. Object to Path***
      5. Select them all again
      6. Union****
      --------------
      7. Select the letter
      8. Object to Path
      9. Ungroup
      10. Draw a black rectangle over letter with 50% opacity
      11. Select and drag over rectangle and letter [all object selected]
      12. Align & Distribute
      13. Shift-click on rectangle to deselect [letter remains selected]
      14. Cntrl-D to duplicate letter
      15. Shift-click rectangle [all objects selected]
      16. Difference
      17. Click letter > Cntrl-D and fill with red with 50% opacity]
      18. Click rectangle and position for shading
      19. Shift-click letter
      20. Object > Clip > Set
      21. Opacity 100%, Blur 20%
      * STATUS BAR DISPLAYS: "No groups to ungroup in the selection"
** Inkscape will not allow me to select letters individually, only the whole word
*** STATUS BAR DISPLAYS: "Group of 3 objects in layer"
**** STATUS BAR DISPLAYS: "One of the objects is not a path..."

I happened to come across your channel a few days ago. It was my first time encountered a tool called Inkscape. I was totally amazed. I had just downloaded the latest version 1.2.2. There are a lot new features, that I could not find some of the features you mentioned, however, I can mentioned this very first project. I had learned how to figure out how to follow along your video, by stopping, rewinding and repeating your every single step. Thank you so much, even I do not think you will read the comments any more. I leave comments to show appreciation and others can be encouraged too. I will learn from every one of your tutorials to improve my skill and speed. Thanks again.

Good video as ever. A tip for clipping: Always group the object(s) you want to put inside the other -- even if it’s only one object. Doing so you can select the clipped object with ctrl+click and alter or move it inside the clipped area without having to release the clip first.

Holy criminy. I've used Inkscape on and off and I know I'm no designer, but I assumed some of the jankiness of my results was because of Inkscape. Even a nearly two-year-old video--meaning using an earlier version of Inkscape--demonstrates that it's skill, not the tool, that's lacking.
I just found your channel and I can't wait to learn more.

I never got nodes on my letter when you did. I tried several times by rewinding and rewatching. EDIT: It took me 2 seconds after posting the question to connect the dots, for some reason I had moved the box above the red A. If you do that you get "normal" shadow. If the letter A is above the square as you set the clip, it forms an "inward" shadow. Hope this saves another soul x

What if I have an EPS image that was originally saved with shadowing AND a white background. When I go to remove the white background... I can remove the white background in other free software but it fails to remove the white behind the shadowing of course & leaves a white/grey blob at the bottom of the image. I'm sure there is any easy way to fix this but I'm stuck. I'm learning but right now I bring the image back to Inkscape & remove each path 1 by 1 because I had a hard time grouping them together, to many objects in the total design.
