I love this show; indeed one of the best series in a long time. While I was eager to see the dance start and understand the time jumps, I agree Laena's story did suffer, and I would’ve appreciated it more. Imagine the season with 12 episodes rather than 10.

28 fuckin years of 'Westerosi History' in 10 HOURS! 10 Episodes! Grown up Rhaenyra is doing a great job but young Rhaenyra, more than one and 3/4 of an episode showing Alicent and Rhaenyra's Bond and she hates her, and Alicent is on like Baby number 3 and then She's a Grandmother sorry I'm just getting started My list of complaints isn't just about Alicent and Rhaenyra I was just starting Alphabetically lol. Milly Aycock and the Alicent Jr actress who's name I've forgotten they both deserved more than 5 episodes.

It gave me whiplash that the relationship was introduced and ended so quickly from what was shown in the show. Especially when she died, it felt like the writers just plugged some text into AI script generator.

It would have been nice to see the relationship between Laena and Rhaenyra. Both of them apparently spent a lot of time together with Daemon, even in the bedroom..
Having both of them at her side would have made Laena's demise more emotional, seeing her at her weakest. I think her death would have been similar to Alyssa's (Daemon's mother), both fierce women who's strength failed at the end.
Maybe if the season had 20 episodes..

This is my character analysis: I think Daemon care abt Laena but he didn't love her the way he loves Rhae. Laena knew what she brings into her table and judging from the wedding, she absolutely know whom he wants. But Laena gets what she wants. And she did. Daemon loves her but Laena is too perfect for him. He grew bored. Daemon is chaotic, and all his life he grew up with this dynamic energy. Story from Visenya, Maegor, Saera and his own mother makes him crave for the same energy that Rhae posseses. Bcs this kind of energy is familiar, it's all he knew. On EP6 we've seen how depressed he was in Pentos even though he said he was happy with Laena. Laena said "I know life has disappoints you. Perhaps I too not the wife you would've wished for yourself" He didn't even try to hide it here. Not to mention she said he's rarely sleeping or lurking to the city like he used to and spent his time reading for 10 yrs instead. The deleted scene also stated that he'd been close to his squire. So Daemon needs someone who matches his energy, that's why he said to Viserys on EP7 "I need R..nothing!" I think his obsession towards Rhae is unhealthy. I dont know where the show goes for Nettles but I kinda doubt that Nettles is going to be his lover. But before you guys come at me, I suggest you to watch this video from George "George RR Martin discusses his book fire and blood penguin random house"

We needed another episode between episodes 5 and 6, and they should've shown more of Laena in the first 4 episodes. I also felt like we needed an extra episode between episodes 7-8. George was right saying we needed 13 episodes but I get why they didn't do it because fans would complain that nothing's happening and that it's boring.

This is going to be totally biased. Daemon is my fav character and Matt Smith has been my fav actor since Doctor Who. I do have to say I agree that adaptations often do have to stray from the source material. You said it better than I ever could. Also, I am not a shipper. I’m mostly interested in how they are balancing his personality.
I believe the book is open to some interpretation of Daemon’s motivations. I don’t discount yours, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think he did have feelings for her.
Ryan has said outright that character moments had to be sacrificed for plot. But I have an issue with some of their final editing choices. Not only was the Laena relationship represented just in one episode, it was given such a short amount of time and they
even hacked that up. They actively chose to screw Daemon and Laena’s characters and Matt and Nana as well. This obsession with childbirth and the patriarchy got too much attention in my opinion. So yes, the time jump was detrimental, but they made other choices that I found questionable.

I think show Laena is a good example of "be careful of what you wish for." She saw Daemon, was drawn to him for some reason, and then spent their marriage trying to make the best of it. She connected with Daemon where she could - their dragons - but they did not see eye to eye in their marriage.

Team Black swear the show didn't do Laena justice by making her a second-choice comfort wife, but how is book Laena any better? Show Daemon at least had the decency to stay away from Rhaenyra during their marriage. The Daemon-Laena love story is just a AO3 fantasy Team Black invented in their heads in a sorry attempt to marginalize Alicent Hightower. Daemon wouldn't have looked at her twice if she weren't the daughter of the richest house and the rider of Vhagar - she was the most eligible bride of her time, even considered for the King. Daemon is not the type of person to marry for love, book Daemon is very calculated and politically minded. He might have liked her, but that's about it.
He killed that Braavosi boy for the same reason he killed Laenor and so many other: they got in his way and became an inconvenience, it's got nothing to do with love - he was exiled again by his brother and the Velaryons were his only hope for staying in Westeros - he was desperate. Sure, he was sad when ahe died, but there's normal to be sad when the mother of your kids die. Of course, his sadness didn't last for long - he married less than half a year later and it was hinted that Rhaenyra might have been pregnant already, so he wasted no time in banging another woman. Oh, and by the way, most likely killed his 'beloved wife's brother too.
The Laena-Rhaenyra friendship is also weird, it just makes Laena a doormat like the rest of her family. She can't be stupid enough not to realize the 'closeness' between her husband and his niece or hear about some of the rumors, and it's really strange that she didn't feel uncomfortable about that. She was just a coverup for whatever was going on between Daemon and Rhaenyra. She also most certainly heard of the bastard rumors - not only did she have no problem about Rhaenyra so blatantly insulting her house, but she even happily betrothed her trueborn daughters to such obvious bastards, putting their future in so much jeopardy. Logically, she should feel resentful toward Rhaenyra but apparently, she wasn't allowed to because the Velaryons were supposed to be Rhaenyra's die-hard fans.
In conclusion, book Laena was nothing more than a plot device and a tool for Rhaenyra to use at her will. Her 'friendship' with Rhaenyra allowed Daemon and Rhaenyra to keep on their little 'fling', her role as a broodmare provided the necessary Velaryon alliance that Rhaenyra needed (also strengthening the claims of Rhaenyra's bastards), her death made the Dance possible by letting Aemond claim Vhagar. There's nothing about her that shows she is a 'fiery' person - if she were, she should have fought for her daughters' inheritance, told her brother to stop turning a blind eye to his 'kids' parentage and called her husband out for maintaining this weird relationship with his previously rumored lover.

The thing is that everyone believed Daemon had a hidden motive for everything he did. Everything is twisted and dark with Daemon.
When if he would have wanted Rhaenrya in the first place he would have indeed have spend more time in Rhaenrya’s presence. He was in the steps stones while Rhaenrya was growing up, he was with Mysaria as well. Then he came back for short period in 111 AC when Rhaenrya was 14 and then he did not come back to Westeros until 118 AC and he came back to Driffmark not king’s landing. Also between 118-120 Laena and Rhaenrya were very close. So close Rhaenrya bethoted her sons to Laena’a daughters.
After Laena died. They waited 2 months until Laenor died and then 6 months after Leanor’s death.
    So it wasn’t immediately either.
Also Rhaenrya was in a fragile position against the greens and Daemon did not a stable home for his girls who were only 4. So they married and for 9 years they live mostly quietly in dragonstone minding their own business and raising their family together.
Daemon while at war did no do anything to make Jace’s claim any weaker. Or try to have his son Aegon claim over jace. Or Baela’s over Luke’s for Driffmark.
The greens literally did everything they said Daemon would do once Viserys died.
I believed that the marriage between Daemon and Rhaenrya could have been for mutual convenience and like I point outs
If daemon could have wanted Rhaenrya for himself. He would have got her. with or without Viserys approval.
He actually waited until Rhae Royce died in 115 AC to marry Laena. In 115 AC Rhaenrya had already been married to Leanor for 2 whole years she had already given birth to jace in 114 AC and Luke 115 AC.
So the show made Daemon kill rhae royce as to show that Daemon was desperate to get Rhaenrya so he could get the throne.
It is odd that all of daemon’s children survived. His two sons became kings, his two daughter settle roots in old town and Driffmark.
Maybe as a way to pay for his misjudged by everyone. He legit never took the throne serious enough.
Otto did all he did and later alicent join him because Daemon was a big BS caller on them. Daemon knew what they wanted, what otto ultimately wanted when he put his daughter in his brother’s bed. When he convince Viserys to name Rhaenrya officially his heir.
That is why I love that he got fired by Aegon II and beheaded by Rhaenrya.
I think out of all the girls he had Laena was the only wife he loved. Of his lovers nettles could have also. At least he grew attach to her during their last months share together during the war.

Not to mention we never see her bond with Vhagar, which would've been an interesting to see how Vhagar reacts to Valyrians she vibes well with, such as of course Laena and Aemond.
