    PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING:
    1: Yes I'm aware my card wasn't fast enough to avoid pink frames. My Extreme PLUS I tried just now performed almost perfectly, but an Extreme Pro is ideal.
    2: I still don't like this camera almost a year later. After using a BMPCC 4K for film classes, the EOS M feels even more clunky. But hey, $109 cinema camera still
    3: My camera appears to be defective in some way, given the extremely strange issues I encountered that even well-meaning users weren't able replicate.
    4: The camera still works and I still use it on shoots sometimes because sometimes there's just nothing better for the moment. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I hate it or would give up its upsides.

    I love it.
    2h testing -> 15min filming -> f*ck something wrong -> 10min fixing -> 15min filming.
    It's no point and shoot, but you learn a ton and you can customize everything you want.

  • @titaniumshell
    @titaniumshell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    Zeek doesn't make a build, he uses Dannes build. 1080p mode is solid on Magic Lantern. The pink frames suggest that your card wasn't writing fast enough. It also looks like there's something wrong with your camera. Learning curve is high on magic lantern but once you're up and running its pretty easy to get along with. It's definitely not a camera for those who want an instant auto mode experience. But those who stick with it learn a lot more about the whole film process.

    • @EVRLYNMedia
      @EVRLYNMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The filmmaking process is setting up everything that you want in front of the camera. The reason so many filmmakers choose Arri for example is because it's an easy system to use, and it certainly never crashes randomly

      @@titaniumshell strange. As far as I'm aware my card is faster than the interface is capable of anyways (95mb/s)
      I do need to properly test the new firmware though, because if it fixes the frame drop issues as well as it claims, that's huge. Only problem is that the D-pad completely broke so now I have to wait for a replacement part lol

      @@titaniumshell yeah i got to testing the new firmware this weekend. same crap i swear... and the camera didnt want to work correctly again! its a warm summer day (not overly hot) and the camera just freezes and crashes constantly and literally wont perform the functions a camera should, which is taking photos. for some reason auto mode just DISAPPEARED from the dial as far as the camera was concerned, and took a battery removal to fix, but it never worked reliably. i got it to take photos sometimes, but i missed many shots because when i pressed the shutter button, often, nothing would happen. i should have brought a second sd card. also the pink frames are still an issue at 30fps... although not as egregiously. only highly detailed scenes make it choke now. this annoys me because to fix the "camera literally wont take photos" issue you have to use canons GUI, but you usually have to literally disable the GUI to get half decent performance which means a lot of fiddling and messing around with the camera while your subjects change or look at you like youre stupid. but the upside is that the video performance is consistent enough for me to actually use it on a regular basis when i need high dynamic range shots and such. oh well though, i guess it was cheap at least

      @@EVRLYNMedia I find the new builds a little strange. They work for some and not for others. I have an older build (that works perfectly for me) backed up in case I run into issues. As far as photography goes, although I rarely use the eosm for anything other than video, I have a card without ml installed for photography, it's just easier to change the card in my experience and use the Canon firmware.

    ML is free and open source. Developers don't get paid to work on it. So they are kind enough to point you to where you can find solutions to your problems to let you learn to solve them by yourself, which is also probably better than to answer your problems one by one, step by step. Besides, "Zeek's" build is from Danne instead of the offical ML team, and also it's heavily modified and undocumented so many people from the ML team are unfamiliar with it. A better place to get help is the EOS M users community.
    Anyway, your honest review and thorough summarization is probably the best EOS M review on TH-cam I've seen so far. Much better than those who avoid talking about the cons.😂 Liked and Subbed.👍🏻

    I think that most people like to talk good about the camera because it's cheap and very old and on using Magic lantern it's does wonders , but the forget that the firmware is very glitchy and post production is very tiring that is why most of the video on TH-cam are of just few seconds or a minute , btw nice video mate it's helpful to newcomers.

    Your video is very useful. People who have been using this camera with ML successfully (such as Zeek) sometimes make it seem like it's easy and straightforward to do so. That is DEFINITELY not the case. The software is buggy, the camera is always working on its limit, crashes and overheating are normal... It's a nightmare and it will test your patience to the point of giving up. I'd recommend, for most people, to stay away from it if they can afford a better camera (a blackmagic, for example).
    BUT, if you are resilient enough and willing to invest the necessary time to it, you'll eventually learn all the hiccups and build yourself a method that can become quite reliable, and it will finally pay off when you unlock the color richness and crisp details of 14bit RAW video!

    • @EVRLYNMedia
      @EVRLYNMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! I ended up liking my unit so much that I replaced the D-pad and now the camera is fully operational! The main downside is the giant video sizes, processing and unreliability, but it makes the filmmaking process feel so much more complete to have that much control over your video footage.

  • @MrStevegibb
    @MrStevegibb 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The real issue is that i have yet to see raw ML footage that does not have extremely weird peaky/clipped green and red tones.
    This is likely down to the raw processing application.
    Camera raw/lightroom is uniquely cloose to original camera image processing. This is important for raw to be useful.
    When you have an app that has no manufacturer input/colaboration you end up with extremely weird looking image quality.
    Please before jumping into magic lantern make sure you dont prefer the look of say a gh5s with prores.
    These cameras will work flawlessly for video have sync stabe auto focus and avtually probably 2nd best color science after canon.
