    ABOUT ME
    I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
    I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on TH-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

    Regarding the water jug: here in Southern California, we travel 2 hours out to the desert state park with off road vehicles. We will bring 2 or 3 five gallon bottles just like you have because you have to drink water constantly or you can die. When the men start drinking beer or whiskey, they have to be constantly reminded to drink water.

    Did you say Armstrong ?
    That is my maiden name. Our ancestors emigrated from Ireland in the early 1800s, but we were told they originated in Scotland. I grew up on a farm (where we had cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, ducks and chickens) in Ontario , Canada. We now live just outside the hamlet of Bailieboro in farm country. I love your sheep and your videos. You are so kind to your ewes . ❤️

    My dad would tie the fleeces into small bundles tied with twine. We had a wooden box with the sides connected with hinges. The twine would be laid down in grooves in the wood. Put in about 2-3 fleeces, put the box sides up and tie. I don’t know what shearers in the states do now.

Further west of us in finewool country the shearing crews use wool presses more than wool stands like i use.

  • @patpierce4854
    @patpierce4854 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A small request from a curious American Sheep Fan - could you please mention what breeds of sheep are being shorn in each video, or put that info down in the Description/Comments area? For the most part, I imagine you encounter mostly commercial breeds like the Scottish Mule and your Cheviots back home. While they are quite popular on your side of the Pond, we don’t see many over here, where Khatadins, Dorpers, Navaho Churros, and for some reason, Babydoll Southdowns seem predominate. This also applies to the working dog breeds - most Americans are going to see those lovely New Zealand Huntaways as some kind of foxhound! Early in this particular video, you mentioned the previous day had BIG sheep, but left us in suspense trying to figure out if they were tall, or heavy, or some combination of both.
    Sheep Fans watch, because we are curious. You can use your videos to help us understand a bit more about sheep farming and sheep care, which is very different from Sandy Brock’s all indoor flock that has 3 lambing periods a year!

    Is the second handpiece a backup just in case ? Or would you use it everyday?

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are going to have two there to use its best to use both of them equally and then they wear down evenly with the cutters you are using. In NZ and AUS, where they stick to 2 hour runs its time efficient to have to handpieces set up where you can just swap handpieces after an hour and not waste time changing a comb. Also great to have a spare as not much you could do if your handpiece broke.

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes if the horns are tight to the face it can be a little tricky getting in and around the head but apart from a few extra bruises they shear just the same.

      I probably didn't get the greatest of cuts using such variation in gear, but was only for half a day so just made it do.

      @@TheSheepGame yeah needs must, I’ve got down to using unground cutters in the last run on Merino wethers with fleeces filled with sand, used all my gear, nowhere to grind in the shed, just wash a few cutters and bang them on, change cutters after every couple of sheep,
      Do you still want to come to NZ😂😂😂😂😂
