    In this video, you will learn this model answer to achieve 100% in any exam question:
    The Rf value of a substance is dependent on how soluble the substance is in the solvent. The most soluble solute finishes highest in the solvent, as it has the weakest attraction to the paper, so it can travel the furthest in the solvent. The most soluble solute will have the highest Rf value. If a substance is pure there will be one spot. If a substance is impure there will be more than one spot. The sample with the greatest number of coloured compounds will have the most spots. If coloured compounds in different samples finish on the same level, then they are the same coloured compound. If a sample does not move from the start line, then it is insoluble in that solvent.

    Can the level at which you draw the solvent front determine the Rf value of the compound and if so, does it not make the Rf values differ by 1 or 2cm per person?

    What if the solute is above the solvent line. I understand that the rf value is never greater than 1, but how do I figure this out then

      the solute is dissolved in the solvent, so can only ever reach as far as the solvent front, which means the maximum number can only ever be 1. The solute cannot dissolve in the paper, which is why the solute cannot be in front of the solvent front.

    how will you calculate 5th mixture? there are like 3 spots there do we take each spot and calculate or the highest spot?

      You can calculate the Rf value of each individual spot. The Rf values are then compared against a known database of how different substances have travelled in that particular solvent to identify the solute. Hope that helps?

    what if the question doesnt say what the distance moved by the ink and the solvent is, how would you divide it if you have no measurements

      you wouldn't as there would be no data to use! only calculate Rf data if given the data in the exam

    Why value of Rf is always less than 1

      Because normally the solvent front will be a greater distance travelled compared to the distance travelled by the solute dissolved in the solvent. The equation to calculate Rf value is distance moved by solute / distance moved by solvent front. Therefore a smaller number divided by a bigger number always gives a number smaller than 1.
