A good tip I discovered for removing the coils is to get a plastic tie wrap and create a loop, then hook it around the head of the coil and pull upwards. Dead easy and saves any risk of damaging the alloy engine.
Very helpful, thanks! Just did this job on my wife's Q5, thought there would be enough remove to avoid removing the coolant tank or airbox but nope...you definitely still need to. Man getting those ignition coils off is a PITA!
Helpful vid. I just had a misfire in cyl 4, IE tunes app showed me. I’m going to swap coil packs first and track down what’s going on. I can’t wait to get back to back 7.200 rpm shifts!
Very much appreciate your effort on this video! You made it understandable and look almost easy. I'd say: if there's a way to full remove the coolant res; then that would make it even more awesome! Maybe anti-seize on the plugs; but that's about the only thing I'd add. I'm also interested in general 'cost range' of the coil pack & plugs.
Not sure if antiseize is the correct product for this application; I think dielectric grease should do the trick - I made the mistake of wiping the factory-applied dielectric grease from the tips of the coils I installed 5 yrs ago. When I went to change coils and plugs again, every single coil had corroded to the ceramic on the spark plug. Was a pain to get each one out without taking it in - had to use long pliers and a long pick set. If this happens to you be sure to either blow out or vacuum out the spark plug hole before removing the plug.
Can you guys show or post how to deal with sticky coil packs? what to do when one gets really stuck. Also mention dialectric grease placement, any on the rubber boot top of the coil pack.... Any impressions on Bremi/Denso coil packs over VW/Audi OEM?
Well demonstrated as always! Just a thought, can these not be replaced without removing the intake or moving the coolant expansion tank? I appreciate that it makes for easier access but is it mandatory? Thanks for all your S4 B8 vids, I've just recently acquired mine and due to your uploads the maintenance work looks much easier already. Keep up the good work!
Did you ever receive an answer to your question? The same thing happened to me this weekend when replacing the coil packs. Is there a replacement gasket for that area?

Hey I did have a question I just changed my coils and plugs after having a misfire in cylinder #4 and I still have the code in my reader. No check engine sign and I do not hear any misfires when I turn the car on. Not sure what to do other than just maybe look inside where the plug sits?
I see different views on the spark plug torque, Deutsche auto parts says 28nm plus 90 degrees and you guys says 35nm? Does it differ per spark plug brand?
For the supercharged engine I recommend no more than .028 gap. The gap should be even smaller if you’re boosted and running cooler plugs. The plugs usually come with a bit larger gap like .03+ so I disagree that they are pre gapped for all applications.
Hey Aaron, I have a 2013 Q7 Premium Plus and I'm trying to remove the coils in cylinders 2 and 3, but I'm having the toughest time getting them out. Any suggestions?
I figure i’d add because the actual spec is not listed here, 0.028” is the correct measurement. I just did this today and indeed the plugs came gapped correctly, but I checked all 6 anyway.
It’s shame I fully understand how to do this but I’m not comfortable doing this to my car it’s my first vehicle my S5 and it’s maintenances are perfect I don’t wanna mess anything up
could someone get back to me asap !!? im looking to buy one should i upgrade the service ignition as soon as i buy the car before tuning adding any performance upgrades ? i just want to avoid misfires completely cause those are bitches

Yes, great tip!
I’ve watched a ton of videos on how to do this process but this is by far the best .

Thank you so much for this demonstration. These German vehicles are intimidating for me but now I am confident I can easily perform my maintenance.
You're very welcome, Adam! Really happy to hear we can help inspire confidence when it comes to DIY maintenance!
I also recommend anti seize and dielectric grease on the plugs. Nice video.
FYI Factory Service Manual says torque for spark plugs on the Q5 3.0T is 30Nm.

You might be able to, but there is definitely more access with the intake and coolant expansion tank out of the way.
It’s worth the extra steps to remove it rather than try to fight with the limited space the whole time
Was doing this and seen a little black gasket inside the spark plug hole ripped up . Is there a gasket supposed to be in the hole?

Do you need to adapt the new coils with the cars computer, sort of like when you install a new battery?
Hi Robert, no need to do so. If you have a prior error code, you will want to clear that with a scanner first.
Does the same torque specs work for a 2010 s5 v8?
Cool Tat!

Not mandatory, but certainly does not help, especially if this is your first time doing this DIY.
2014 Audi A6 best spark plug 🔌?
Is is necessary to do a 90 degree turn after torquing the spark plugs ?
No just torque to spec which should be around 30nm. First hand thread it before you torque it so you don't strip the spark plugs.
Would you recommend ngk over bosch and why?
Yes mainly because NGK is the OEM for VW Audi and the Iridium IX series seems to have the most features and solid engineering data to back it up.
I see different views on the spark plug torque, Deutsche auto parts says 28nm plus 90 degrees and you guys says 35nm? Does it differ per spark plug brand?
It could differ by brand. Some plugs like NGK have an integrated crush washer.
I learn a by my mistake, i broke those hose while operating this spark plug in, it's okay to open those hose and put the tank down on the floor...
Nice job! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Since they already come pre gapped, how much gap?

If i get just an iridium spark plug from a local autoparts store, would this be a problem? Or should I do NGK?
We highly recommend NGK.
NGK is OEM, don’t fuck around.

Is there a torque difference depending on if the engine is hot/warm or cold for the plugs?
Yeah, absolutely man. Its 1 slow ugha duggah hot, or 2 mild ugha duggahs cold
Which coils do you use?
Torque spec for Audi Q7 2009 spark plugs?
I wonder why the ngk: bkr7eix plugs wont fit ?
You need 8eix for the stock supercharged engine or 9eix if your ECU is tuned (80+ hp).
