I think you missed an important aspect of this story. At the time (2014) one could not only access the app's immediate consumer data via facebook APIs, but also that consumer's friends. That's how although there were only 270k users of that app Kogan could harvest 50 million users' data indirectly and probably illegally. Facebook has obviously fixed this hole after they became aware of it.

I am pretty sure facebook teams will resolve the privacy issues and data security in a complete fair way.
Another issue you addressed here is fake profiles. I really want some steps to be taken on social platforms to solve this fake users issue. It can be facebook, Instagram, youtube, Twitter.. etc. This changes are really necessary to access internet for everyone. Also everyone needs to understand term “profile picture “. This column is not meant for celebrities faces.
I also use developer Facebook for my project....I can relate with the fact that actually these things can be done by a single developer.
As a data engineer I dont see why the hell it is a big problem. I use facebook SDK for our android app to capture event data . On top of that I also build serverless API to capture granular event data. Users has already agreed to the term and conditon when using the service. Why it is a big deal ???

I don't get it. As it is companies like Amazon extract information about our "likes" and interests, similar kind of data was extracted by CA as well. Then why is it a breach of Facebook policies?

I am a students of both B.Sc IT and B.Sc chemistry and trying my hands on many other stuff which I can do. Do the things for which you have resources do not cry for moon. For example I have a laptop with core2duo CPU and 2Gigs of RAM. Now I am jack of all trades like machine learning, and any type of app development. Now mastering web development because my laptop will not support any other stuff except a web server a browser and a code editor. I have also subscribed for Azure with Imagine program and working on some ideas, hope I will be able to earn some money from them to buy a laptop and also and then start trying for them. Sorry for the long comment

A crazy idea though... Why not provide an assessment to the user before allowing them to access the app. Some kind of requirement to get 90% or 100% passing rate :D. Sounds annoying though, but most likely people will understand how serious the T&C and PP are.
Can some entity please find out and post the supposed 4000 - 5000 data points that Cambridge Analytica supposedly utilized against their fellow human beings.
I think the fake news is followed because of the humor it has. If you heard of Stephen colbert, Jon stewart for example, their news are hilarious. I used to enjoy them before, but now it seems too much, they cater to a certain mindset of the ppl. I guess, Fake profiles should be addressed. I think to address it, in college, everybody should have a youtube channel as a compulsory criteria so that they will stop trying to hide under anonymity.
Why don't you put the soundtracks in credits of the video. I think you should if you are using someone else's. Didn't want to offend but I said it because I like your taste in music selection.

Let us consider an industry which is non- IT say for example finance-CA people. Now these people have a set of "rules and regulations" that specifies what is wrong and what is right. Now why it is needed there? Just because you are in a physical world and you "are aware of consequences".
Unfortunately in IT everything is virtual and that is both an opportunity and an issue. You can "understand machine" and develop an algorithm to manipulate it according to your wants. Moreover "one life is not enough to understand a machine fully. We understand it in parts".
I think the best option is to "regulate" IT industry. We need to work on Cyber security.

So the fake profile stuff that you were discussing- I have some different opinion. So I don't think fake profiles are the problem. It's more of people just putting more and more of their personal stuff online to a point that their personal life gets affected.
There is reddit where everyone has a fake name, even on the some forms on deep web where everyone are encouraged to use a fake name.
For example if I post a picture on FB, every single comment matters. And a bad comment will do spoil my reputation. But on reddit, no one cares.
And yes I am aware of the fact that there are pretty bad stuff posted on reddit. But the same is happening in real world

I have a solution for fake profile, If a user comments something he should must given a options to reveal his identity or not. It may be a dumb sol. but don't worry it's version 1.
they are doing in name of technology is "Yore Life but Their Choice", People are living without technology since down of mankind, and they are living great and fine, if you noticed app or any other technological thing you using is not serving you but instead you serving this app or thing, then it's time to delete them, as developer or big corporation they have to respect people, people are not their product, or not subjects to exploits. otherwise they deserve same consequence like facebook
