  • I was escorting my daughter who was paddling from Takapuna beach to Rangitoto. It was the last (6th) session of a learn to paddle surfski program organised by Canoe Racing New Zealand for children between the age of 9 and 14.
The sea was quite rough, with more wind than expected. Alexandra did very well. It was 4.5 km long (2.8 miles).
The surfski was a RS52 provided by CRNZ: "The RS52 is the first racing kayak from Star, in partnership with Canoe Racing New Zealand
Optimized for Junior Paddlers, the RS52 is capable a great boat for learning and racing alike." More about it at www.starkayaks...

Alexandra is the most relaxed, enjoying every big swell and the occasional breaking wave 😊

She was! And there were lots of breaking waves once we reached the boat channel, we even had a fishing boat going extremely close to us because the two fishermen were at the back with their rod and not looking!! Thanks to the lady on her Fenn Sparks who yelled at them if she watches this video!
This paddle trip was about 50mn resumed in 3mn.

Good question! Possibly me 😄 as I was worried because she wasn’t used to paddle that long in that type of sea. She still had to climb to the summit after the paddle!
She really surprised me, she had no stress no worries and telling me about some funny characters in a cartoon while paddling 😂
