Okay, so I see that I could have another issue with my toilet. Mine isn't filling, shutting off, then filling again on a continuous cycle. Mine just continues to run non-stop, therefore, it may be the fill valve you were mentioning, which seems more confusing to me. I will have to watch again. This is so helpful!

Thanks for the video. One thing I read, and did:
I put Red food coloring in the tank. An hour later, the water in the bowl was red. That made me think the flapper was bad. The other problem was the float wasn't adjusted right. The water level I the tank was right at the top of the fill tube. That caused a siphon.

Thank you for this excellent troubleshooting video. I have a situation where there seems to be a subtle leak from tank to bowl - not enough to cause a ripple in the bowl water surface, but enough that I can hear a faint trickling sound. I replaced the flapper valve, but the problem remains. In fact, when the tank fills, water ripples into the bowl as well. Does this sound like the tank to bowl gasket or maybe something else? Thanks.

      Hi,
Check the fill valve tube that goes to the flush valve stand pipe, some times if the hose goes down into the stand pipe far enough it will siphon water from the tank.
If that's not it press you finger down on the center of the flapper see if it stops rippling in the bowl ( may be defective flapper)
Also run your finger around the area that the flapper seals on, some times there is a flaw in that or part of the old flapper (needs to be a smooth surface to seat properly.
If all this fails its the flush valve. You will need to rebuild the entire tank, Fluid Master has this kit with every thing in it.
Hope you find it with out to much trouble. Let me know what you come up with.
      Thanks
      Ross

    • @DIYOnTheHouse
      @DIYOnTheHouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Make sure the little tube from the fill valve that goes to the stand tube on the flush valve isn't to far down into it, it can siphon water from the tank through the fill valve and into the stand tube. Also check the seat on the flush valve where the flapper lands on. If there is a defect on it will refill. lift the flapper and run you finger nail on the seat and feel for indents.

Thank you so much for these tips! My toilet seems to have a unique problem. The bowl (and I believe also the tank) have a build up of what looks like dirt, but I don’t believe it’s dirt or mold. It’s in the whole part of the bowl where the water is, not just the rim of the water. And it’s only in one of our 4 toilets in the house. Do you know what it could be and how to fix the toilet to prevent it?

    • @DIYOnTheHouse

I am guessing that it is scale. Try scraping it with the edge of a flat screw driver, if it pops off, it is scale. You can soak it with white vinegar. If I am not understanding correctly, can you email me a picture at diyonthehouse@gmail.com and I can see if I can tell what is going on?

Thank you for this video. Is there a way to tell where the leak is from if it's not obvious that it's visible on the floor? For instance, we have a constant pressure well system and we are trying to figure out what we need to take apart for the toilet. We already replaced the flapper but the pressure is dropping in our home still. I rather not for instance try to change out the flange since it means taking things more apart that I am comfortable with. Thank you for your time.

I have been chasing to many toilet leaks and needs to come to an end.. and should I get copper bolts to put in for tank to bowl? Thank you..

    • @DIYOnTheHouse

Inside the tank it will be just the bolt and a rubber washer, on the bottom of the tank
put a rubber washer, a metal washer and nut and tighten. This will seal the bolt holes.
Place the tank on the bowl and put on metal washer and nut and secure. Make sure the flush valve gasket is in place before setting the tank.

    Outstanding video.
One additional leak that wasn't covered is a pinhole or crack in the toilet bowl. This may be invisible to the eye. Symptom is water in bowl slowly disappears.
The only way I know to confirm this is remove the toilet and take the bowl to a place where water would not be an issue (on the floor) and fill the bowl carefully and slowly with water. There should be NO WATER on the floor. I let mine stand overnight just to be sure.
If there is water on the floor, you will have to replace the bowl or the entire toilet.
    Ask me how I know.
Maybe DIY On The House can confirm.

@@DIYOnTheHouse Thanks! I think my problem is #4. There's no water on the floor. At first I was fooled because the water level in the bowl wasn't rising as the top was draining. But then I guess the level in the bowl can only be so high because of the level at which it starts to drain. So I bet it's silently draining through that old gasket down to the bowl and down the pipe all slow and unnoticeable until the water starts to run.

Make sure the small tube from the fill valve that goes to the center stand pipe isn't down inside it a long ways. This will cause water to siphon through. If that isn't it then you may have a leak on the flush valve seal. That involves pulling the tank and replacing every thing in it. If that's the case Fluid Master sells a complete kit at any hardware store.

Just watched this video while trying to fix a toilet that puts water into the bowl constantly and then refills every 15 minutes or so. After replacing the flapper without stopping the leak, I think I've got it narrowed down to the fill tube as the water stops going into the bowl after about 15 minutes once the water is shut off. I pulled the fill up so it's barely in the white flapper tube and that seems to have stopped the leak as the water doesn't appear to be going into the bowl anymore once the toilet fills back up after flushing. I guess I wasted $7 on a new flapper, but at least it's fixed.
Looking back I should have realized it was not the flapper as I lost power for 3 days after hurricane Ian and therefore, lost water. My toilet never completely emptied itself and I still got a flush out of it after a day of no water. A leaking flapper I'm guessing would have emptied it down to the flapper itself as opposed to the spot where that tube ended.

If the leak is at the valve stem. You can tighten the bonnet nut and it will compress the packing on the stem and stop the leak.

I seem to have a different problem with my toilet leaking. I have a toilet just like your example and the part that regulates how much water goes into the tank has 2 holes in the top of it and the water squirts out of those holes and is aimed right at the opening where the toilet handle is then it drips on the outside of the toilet down to the floor. Also, the toilet is filling constantly. It never shuts off. I manually have shut it off for now. Can you help? I'll watch for your answer. Thanks

You would need to change are the flapper and the fill valve - I found a kit that has both items on Amazon amzn.to/3gNYCfQ. Did you see our video on how to change a flapper? th-cam.com/video/kT6IV8N3FBs/w-d-xo.html -- You also may want to try this video on how to shut off the water th-cam.com/video/LddC37OagCc/w-d-xo.html. Keep us posted on how it goes!

You missed the fill valve gasket from underneath bottom of taank

      @DIYOnTheHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The fill valve gasket is slid on the threaded shank cone down of the fill valve and the the bottom side of the tank is just the threaded nut. when it is tightened it compress' the gasket between the flange on the fill valve and the tank, making the seal.

Did you replace it with a new braided supply line? Or is it the solid line that
is solid from the valve to the toilet connection?
Also check the plastic nut that secures the fill valve at the tank, sometimes those will loosen when replacing the supply line causing leakage as well.

Me too I hear that hissing did you find an answer anywhere as to why :)?

The hissing sound is coming from the fill valve (the valve with a float) It will need to be replaced. The hissing is water pressure leaking through the rubber diaphragm.

so my ra stopped at my dorm yesterday and helped me fixed the light then she asked for my number so she can text me school Information to me. then she saw the area code and she's like where are you from and turn out we from same place. so before she left she said she's gonna take care of me because I'm from her home town. then she texted me her full name including middle name?? then couple days later she texted me the additional school information without me even asking her. and she's not even my RA. she is just an on duty RA. does she like me? I was really formal maybe that's bad? she was joking around but I'm too akward so I said thank you and that's it.

Sounds like the flapper valve is leaking, that would be the best starting point.
