Pat Donohue is in the elite circle of acoustic guitar players who are pure musicians with impeccable technique and an intuitive sense of melody and harmony. His brilliant arrangements are true to the original. And his execution is flawless. His instruction videos are simply the best I have ever seen . Pat is a great teacher. I'm sure there must be a flaw somewhere.... ;-0
I saw Pat at a little gig in Elizabethtown Ky in 99-2000. This is one of the tunes he did that evening. He was amazing! I'd never seen acoustic slide guitar first hand until I saw Pat doing "Mud Slide" that night. I still remember his performance after all these years.
brilliant recording! I am learning a lot from this. I am punching a bit above my weight here, but this is very informative. I love the way he puts a "pianistic"effect to this tune. He also doesnt go overboard with the jazz chords, even embelishing with some country harmonizations. Thank you to the kind soul uploading this for all of us to learn and it's always great to meet a new player you hadnt heard of. truly great stuff, alhough to learn you really have to divide your brain in different sections, I struggly the most with the right hand .Thanks for uploading!
This is a master class in guitar harmonization. It's sad that some are too musically challenged to recognize it. Or maybe they think that criticism of others will make them more important than they really are in this world. Having met and talked to Pat, I consider him not only a great musician, but a true gentleman. I'm sorry that his gift to us lesser guitarists is such an affront to wannabes.
Maybe consider replacing the idea of "Musically Challenged" with the idea that some people have literally never been exposed to musical concepts like a lot of us. "Musically Challenged" should really be a term restricted to those who have been taught at least some basic music theory and still can not comprehend concepts like intervals and Harmony. There are just haters everywhere though, they may just see criticism as sustenance.
Thanks Pat - I'm going to be so happily studying this for some time - will stop me misbehaving. You're are an excellent teacher and guitarist (not always a happy combination). Mucha gracias
This is just so good. I think I learned more studying this for the last 4 hours than I have in the last 2 months. I just bought the DVD, its only fair. I came here studying Leon Redbone, there's an odd dearth of his stuff on TH-cam. Its really interesting to hear the differences in his version and Pat Donohue's. In general Leon has much fewer changes, though they both have lots of harmonic movement. I transcribed this (and working on Leon's), if anyone wants me to post, reply here.
I did take some jazz guitar lessons many years back and I`m glad I did. Knowing the different augmented and diminished patterns and so forth. I have never been a finger pickin` player but that's all right. I can use what I know to perform this tune. By the way, awesome pickin` Pat.
You nailed it. Your rendition has the bounce of Waller's piano. Which is rare. Too many others "over jazz" it with altered chords etc. that don't work.
Hi ,really enjoyed learning this and playing it, nice piece. I can not believe how rude some of the comments are and how sad these people must be. Thanks
Pat, are those top cracks running down from the bridge in that beautiful Somogyi? I have similar cracks (repaired) in my Collings. Enjoyed staying up playing with you all night at my campground at Winfield about ten years ago. Thanks to you and Stephen Bennet for letting me sit in. And I got a lot out of your workshop, too. Thank.
i was so proud of the fancy way i did this tune ... and then i watched this ... back to the drawing board. just gorgeous. THANKS!

How often do you get to hear a master explain chords and placement like this. God bless you, Mr. Donohue. Beautiful stuff.
Awesome arrangement! Pat never leaves ya hanging
Tell me - what's it like getting a like and a comment on a comment that you made 10 years ago? .... I bet it feels kind of strange, huh? 🤔
great job Pat ...there are so many variations and chord substitutions involved ...actually a lot of fun. Thanks for breaking this down.!
great player, great sound and great lesson.

Great job, I love the way you describe the one lick as "pianistic!" Thank you Pat.
I always enjoyed Pat as guitarist on Prairie Home Companion. He is a very stylish guitarist.
Wonderful . Thanks you for a look at your soul. I am going to learn this from you .Thank You Ken Wentworth Bangor Maine
Pat, you're a really good man. Thanks for sharing !
Thanks for noting Fats Waller in this arrangement. Tricky stuff and extensive practicing!
this is the best guitar version I have seen anywhere!! I'm trying to play it as shown and I gotta say its tricky
How about Joe Pass' version?
Joe pass' version is the absolute best. It's just beautiful and mind boggling.
Maybe now after 8 years I’m ready to learn this …. Maybe

Sounds great!
Brilliant! one of my favorites
Well Pat, it is an active pattern to play but you just do it so well. 👏. I'll fumble thru for a few years and maybe it'll be close
You nailed it. Your rendition has the bounce of Waller's piano. Which is rare. Too many others "over jazz" it with altered chords etc. that don't work.
wow , thanks man. u made my day with this!!! GOOOOOD JOOB!
Oh cool .. let's see your version !!
Hi ,really enjoyed learning this and playing it, nice piece. I can not believe how rude some of the comments are and how sad these people must be. Thanks
This guy is awesome! I'm just going to practice, strumming the chords. Then I'll try the finger picking.
Thanks for this.
Thanks
Absolute magic! Can I ask what pics you’re using??
Simply perfect !

Ugh. Too damn good.
PURE
About 30 views but i got it a new world opened thanks !
Did he say "A# Diminished garden variety"? lol
Gtr Workshop class this as Level 3 which I think is 'Intermediate'.So what would they call 'Advanced' FFS!
kingstumble joe pass
Lmao. Probably the Gary Davis rags are up there in difficulty.
God DAMN this seriously incredible
What are the 2 raised lines running and the back of the sound board, behind the bridge. A trick of light perhaps??
Raymond Dixon I think its cracked wood finish. It must be a favorite of his.
DANG!!!
WOW
Where can I find his lessons
Pat's fingers surely ain't misbehaving.
Who are these 16 people who don't love this!???
Weirdos.
What kind of fingerpicks is Pat using?
So talented he actually teaches Over The Hills and Far Away simultaneously starting at 2:39 lol
The player is great, but that guitar he plays...no ordinary instrument at all:it's a Somogyi!
Great sound too.
With a bit of practice, this guy could turn it pretty good!
Fats never felt more at his ease.
oh yeah, work dat thumb son!
:)
you can get away with so much if you just do it in natural guitar keys
I suck
Show off. I was looking for something a little more simpler .
Well you know how to curse, let's see if you know how to play guitar !!
A non-systematic tutorial, not clear but deeply confused. Great guitarist but lousy teacher.
in reply to wrybread - yes I would like a copy of the Tab also......
