I just bought a 192GB ECC RAM Dual Xeon X5675 with 6 x 1TB SAS drives on ebay for £70. I think it's going to be a fun NAS and VM box. Thank you for the guide.
I have several HP and Dell servers. What I don't like about HP is that once out of contract you can't get bios updates. Dell continues to provide those for older servers along with drivers. For home lab users who are just leaning to use them for IT study are left out in the cold.
I just obtained a refurbed one (I have 2 DELL 2950s from work recycle program years ago). HP also requires a license key to use the built-in ILO2 :( My DELLs both have iDRAC which are free to use.
the g7 is not much different to the g6 as there was only small improvements made, but the riser card slots for the gpu is actually 2 4x and one 8x slot and is not a true x16 slot which is very annoying.
G6 and G7 are basically the same, the only difference is that G7 has ILO3 and G6 has ILO2. I had both versions at home and they had the same performance.
There is a PCIe 16x (single slot) riser card available. Works in both the gen6 and gen7. The riser card has a 5 pin 12v power connector on its reverse side. The power source is a proprietary cable that runs from a 10 pin connector on the motherboard adjacent to the internal USB port. This is used if the PCIe 16x (video) card requires more than 75 watts power. The three slot riser card can be moved over to the secondary 16x slot. I'd imagine one could install two PCIe 16x riser cards in the server for installation of two 16x video cards. Then, the extra power cable would have two 5 pin connectors on one end. I have a dl380 gen7. Since it's intended for personal home use only, does anyone have copies of the latest ILO firmware and BIOS updates available for it? Also, do such upgrades require a USB bootable key to install them? Or simply install a USB stick with the updates on them, boot into the BIOS or ILO, and subsequently install the updates from the thumb drive?
Someone local is selling one for the equivalent of 75$. It would be great for use as a NAS. Unfortunately I don't have enough space in my apartment for it.
If you can get them cheap they work well, but they aren't energy efficient at all. I've owned a Gen 2, Gen 5, Gen 7 and a Gen 8. The Gen 8 are the start of when they begin using 80+ efficient PSUs and have smarter energy management. I believe they also made 80+ for the late Gen 7 models, but the Gen 8 PSUs are backwards compatible with the Gen 7 and Gen 6. I took a 1200w out of my Gen 8 and put into the Gen 7 and it works fine. If you get something older than a Gen 8, make sure the power supplies are 80+ certified. Prior to the Gen 6, all models had unique power supplies which was a real pain. The DL380/DL360s share the same power supplies it seems beyond Generation 6. The DL360s are also really quiet unless there is other hardware added. The DL380, DL580, and the like are usually pretty loud regardless. The only real down side is everything prior to Generation 10, firmware and system rom updates require a service contract which is insanely expensive.
It's ABSOLUTE PAIN to don't have cheap places to buy servers or old hw in 🇨🇱. People put awful prices for junk and obsolete hardware. They sell them at refurbished prices but the products have a lot of details or broken pieces. It's inssuferable
i have a HP DL580 G7 but won't fire up? i have a amber power light and on the little panel there is a red light flashing after i have pressed the power on but no life coming from it whatsoever, could you shed any light on it, i have changed to psu's but still same. thanks
Red usually indicates a board failure but can be anything from a faulty PSU to no memory to bad PCIe card etc. If you have iLO access, you should still be able to login and see what the error is there. Alternatively, see if any specific things light up on the panel. What red flashing light on the panel is it?
@@CobsTech hi. Thanks for getting back. It didn’t think it would be possible to get the ip address with it not actually powering up but I will try it although never done it in my life ever. The red light is just flashing it has like a heart monitor symbol next to it but that’s all it does flash. I have changed all the psu’s but they give no green light at the back either. I have reseated the ram cartridges thinking maybe that but to no avail. I bought it from eBay only 4 days ago and it arrived this morning the guys described it as fully working etc but actually lied it seems. So because he is now ignoring me on the request of my money back I thought maybe it could be a easy fix. On the motherboard there a a small display that displays the numbers 5.2 them changes to 8.0 or vice versa cause I’m not sure the way of facing for it tbh but the number 8 flashes
@@BTC_4ME Hey, no worries, unfortunately from my research it seems like it may be a failed motherboard sadly. Can you popout the system insight display and let me know what lights are flashing or lit on it? If you go to page 78 on this service guide, it'll show you what you're looking for: images10.newegg.com/User-Manual/User_Manual_59-107-471.pdf
I think it's more about how much do you want to spend on storage. It can take 8 x 2.5" drives. For 2.4TB drives will be around $100 used and more than $300 brand new. So that's $800+ for 19.2TB storage. The alternative is get a used Dell Powervault with 12 x 3.5 drive bays, and put 6TB drives for around similar price and get 72TB of storage
Place a USB stick in the internal USB slot. Install OS to the stick via the CD-ROM. Remove CD from the optical drive, and you should be able to boot from the bootable USB stick. I have Linux Mint installed on a 32 gb Sandisk stick, and it works fine. The server will boot from the same USB stick if it's inserted into the port on the front bezel.

I was given a DL380 G7 today with 1CPU and 48Gb RAM. This video will be a lot of help for future upgrades.
You could try Snappy Driver Installer to see if it can find a compatible driver for the ATi video adapter

I did bios updates on my dl380 g5

I think you are missing the fan shroud if you hadn’t already noticed. I think I remember these making a bit of difference to the cooling performance
yeah the black shroud missing..
Great video, I just got 2 DL380 (Gen6 and 7) and that vidéo ils exactly what I needed. Thanks

I saw that same server cabinet in the checkout line at the grocery store; theirs this full of coconut water and root beer though...

considering buying a G7 for a virtualisation homelab

I know it´s a bit late but where is your fan shroud that ensures the cpu cooling, or is that only on the G7?
I want one of these, probably a g8

@@CobsTech it’s the health one. Are motherboards expensive for these as they’re quite old now. Thanks
you have hdd backplan card
Don't you have a way to buy a server? I live in Russia
PSU is OEM from Lite-on(光宝),the brand name is printed in Chinese language😂
I've got the G7. Not much difference other than the iLO 3
You can get a 3.5 bay for a g7 for much cheaper
I have one of thear 385 g6 12core - 2.somthing 128gb ram I'm wondering what is the best version of Windows to put on it
non
try PVE/Proxmox
how, i my country theres no good offer for server . and you find free server, wow. Im glad for you luck.
What Maximum HDD Storage i can install in this server

Missing a fan shroud there....
Where abouts would it go? The server doesn’t seem to have one if there’s supposed to be.
HP part 496061-001 air baffle. Item 7 on their spare parts list.
How do you make a usb bootable for this server ?
Place a USB stick in the internal USB slot. Install OS to the stick via the CD-ROM. Remove CD from the optical drive, and you should be able to boot from the bootable USB stick. westmere is practically a historical artifact at this point. though it's good if you want a space heater! 😁
So much for cheap servers- mans getting shit for free now smh!
Bro, its 2024 year...

Whats problem?
install templeos
