Concerning the original hp battery pack: They have quite litte lifespan. The first one was flat after 3 years of operation. If've replaced it with an original on, which died after another 3 years. Now, that the server is out of its rack for a hard drive upgrade, i'll fix the battery as well. I'll use eneloop AAA cells. I see no use in buying another overpriced HP spare, which is prone to fail soon. Besides these spares are probably have been sitting on the shelf for over a decade now.

The controller deactivates the dram-cache automatically if the battery goes flat. The loss of performance is dramatical! However in the ACU (Smart Array Configuration Utility in Windows) you can reenabel the dram cache and regain performance. Beware of the risk of data loss in case of mains power failure! UPS is highly recommended!

Worked like a charm! I've secured the battery compartment with some velcro strips to the metal casing.

Without cache you loose alot of performance. Its like Night and day

are you able to show a diagram on how you put and soldered the batteries (where the positive and negative leads of the batter go to?)
On my batterypack, there is a "red +" on the plastic casing, indicating the positive terminal!
