@Angelo Aitken I think what happened was an officer shot and it hit off the ground and hit an officer. At least that’s the testimony that some of the good cops that were there that dreadful day said. I forgot the guys name but there was a very nice cop that is still very troubled by what happened that day. There’s a documentary on TH-cam if I can dig it up I’ll put the link here. As bad as the cops looked that day we must remember there are still some good ones out there that completely disagreed with everything that happened that day. The teachers were supposed to teach this, when I was in high school. But, they thought against it because it was the end of the school term. I looked in the back of the textbook just for funnies. With the immense amount of information we have easy access to nowadays and new media that can be both educational and entertaining, school is really just daycare centers for working parents and is a "society lite" for kids to get used to. They for years had held up in a house on Powelton Ave. on Drexel's campus. Their area was sectioned off for YEARS! This was a neighborhood with children not a grassy knoll. Then they moved farther in to west Philadelphia. What should a city do? This was at least 9 years after they had started all of this.

I'm from Philadelphia. Born and raised. I just turned 7 when MOVE happened. I remember the whole thing like it was yesterday. It was absolutely awful to witness. I remember going to see the aftermath and the destruction was mind blowing. That part of West Philly was never the same. Those poor people who lost their homes weren't given anything near the amount that they lost.

It was on the news a couple of years ago. One of the Move women was pregnant and had her baby in jail. The baby grew up and received the bones of his siblings. When I read the title, I assumed mismanaged old military equipment for sure or some freak accident... No! They literally dropped a bomb on a family!! ...Not even some isolated home but right in the middle of a neighborhood!!
Yeah and now they get their satisfaction blowing up mosques and civilians halfway around the world with drones while the operators sit on home soil pressing buttons on a keyboard and looking at monitors like its a video game. Its terrible the way some humans treat others.
Well, they were not “getting along with the neighbors”. Years and years of neighborhood complaints and all sorts harassment. Also malnourished kids living in squalor etc. They did not start this action on a whim. The bomb, and fire response, stunningly idiotic and cowardly.
I was in the Marine Corps and stationed in NC when this happened. A friend of mine said “Man what’s going on in your city”? That’s when I called home and got the news. From my time growing up I had seen MOVE throughout the city. In fact some of them had moved into an abandoned house on our block. But they didn’t bother anyone. There’s an interesting book and documentary about this called “Let It Burn” for anyone interested.
The same MOVE terrorizing their neighborhoods, espousing political propaganda over bullhorns at night, housing members wanted for parole violations, contempt of court, illegal possession of firearms, and making terroristic threats and then shooting at the police when these warrants were being served? Even if the warrants were false, which I guarantee to you they weren't, the place to settle that is a courtroom, not a gunfight with the police, especially not when you have children in your house.

It's a story that really does not get much attention anymore, hasn't for decades. Except on May 13th each year on the local Philly news making the anniversary briefly. I recall this 1985 day vividly, The earl morning shootout, the water cannons, then the helicopter / bomb at 5:30pm. I knew about the group just by the name and what happened in 1978. It should be noted, this wasn't a one-way story; the MOVE house had been a public nuisance for an extended period of time. The city issues arrest warrants, and in their attempt to execute them (however bewilderingly idiotic it was to attempt) lead to a massive firefight. The warrants may or may not have been justified, but the MOVE group wrongfully fired upon (and continued to fire upon) police officers. The city's handling of the MOVE group started completely and utterly wrong; but they did not deserve to be fired upon. The bombings, however, were truly batshit insane. No one has legally condoned these behaviors. The travesty is a lack of liability for illegal use of explosives, illegal damage of property, and manslaughter caused by this.
Ya this story is full of plot holes. Like of course the fire fighters didn't move in to put out the fires, they would never move into an area where a gunfight occurred without confirming that it's completely safe. Ambulances didn't go into Portland for the same reason, they need to be sure that the firemen and medics aren't going to get shot. Additionally, the police commissioner didn't just say "Attention, MOVE ... This is America", he said "This is America, you have to abide by the laws of the United States" Which I'd say is a perfectly reasonable thing to say to a group of radicals who believed that the US Government shouldn't exist. The more i learn about the government in the 1980’s and 90’s the more disappointed i become with the country i live in. I understand that some people have different beliefs but we live in a free country and shouldn’t be killed for believing something thats out of the ordinary. An unarmed woman holding a baby shouldn’t be killed, over a dozen kids shouldn’t be burned alive for the beliefs of their parents, and bombs should not be dropped on American civilians. Also our education system has failed us, i grew up 3 hours from Philadelphia and never heard about this until a youtube video showed it to me.
Not trying to justify the police's actions at all, because its insane to bomb your own people like this, but this woman is acting like there was no resistance by MOVE at all and police was there with the sole purpose of killing them. She forgets to mention that 16 officers and firefighters were injured by MOVE members in the shootout. Not that that warrants the way the police handled this of course, but it would have been nice to hear some other accounts on what happened because this woman is (understandably) biased to some degree.
You are also failing to realize thousands of bullets cause friendly fire. How many of these public servants had bullets in them from other public servants not the MOVE organizers?

@Angelo Aitken I think what happened was an officer shot and it hit off the ground and hit an officer. At least that’s the testimony that some of the good cops that were there that dreadful day said. I forgot the guys name but there was a very nice cop that is still very troubled by what happened that day. There’s a documentary on TH-cam if I can dig it up I’ll put the link here.
As bad as the cops looked that day we must remember there are still some good ones out there that completely disagreed with everything that happened that day. The police chief and DA were reckless that caused this event.

The teachers were supposed to teach this, when I was in high school. But, they thought against it because it was the end of the school term. I looked in the back of the textbook just for funnies. Then I saw it. 'The Police Bombing of Philadelphia Street' I could never forget it.

They for years had held up in a house on Powelton Ave. on Drexel's campus. Their area was sectioned off for YEARS! This was a neighborhood with children not a grassy knoll. Then they moved farther in to west Philadelphia. What should a city do? This was at least 9 years after they had started all of this.

I was a child when this happened, 7 going on 8. I was with my Aunt who lived on Parkside Ave across the street from Fairmont Park at the time. I remember the vibration, seeing the smoke and hearing the adults talking about it. Now, as a grown woman, I realize how insane it was for the police to dropped a bomb on homes with children inside. If you’re from Philly you know Rizzo was a racist. When I was of college age, Mayor Street was teaching at Eastern University ( College at that time ) Rizzo and Street should have gone to prison for murder.
Wilson Goode was mayor at this time, not Rizzo. Gregore J. Sambor was the police commissioner. The latter was the one who was blamed for the whole fiasco.
Whoever the guy was who dropped the bomb and told the firefighters not to put the fire out should be classified as terrorists

I was in the Marine Corps and stationed in NC when this happened. A friend of mine said “Man what’s going on in your city”? That’s when I called home and got the news. From my time growing up I had seen MOVE throughout the city. In fact some of them had moved into an abandoned house on our block. But they didn’t bother anyone. There’s an interesting book and documentary about this called “Let It Burn” for anyone interested.
I was in Swamp Lejeune also that day. Hope you put in your claims and have an Attorney for the contaminated water on base.

It's a story that really does not get much attention anymore, hasn't for decades. Except on May 13th each year on the local Philly news making the anniversary briefly. I recall this 1985 day vividly, The earl morning shootout, the water cannons, then the helicopter / bomb at 5:30pm. I knew about the group just by the name and what happened in 1978. THAT I slightly recall, the first confrontation in the Mantua section...always remember this grainy news clip of guns shooting and this dog running across the scene.

The "breaking news" at the time made it seem like move started the fires. Mayor Rizzo was a racist and a jackass. My stepfather told stories of how Rizzo when he was a cop terrorize black teens in his past.

It should be noted, this wasn't a one-way story; the MOVE house had been a public nuisance for an extended period of time. The city issues arrest warrants, and in their attempt to execute them (however bewilderingly idiotic it was to attempt) lead to a massive firefight. The warrants may or may not have been justified, but the MOVE group wrongfully fired upon (and continued to fire upon) police officers. The city's handling of the MOVE group started completely and utterly wrong; but they did not deserve to be fired upon.
The bombings, however, were truly batshit insane. No one has legally condoned these behaviors. The travesty is a lack of liability for illegal use of explosives, illegal damage of property, and manslaughter caused by this.

Ya this story is full of plot holes. Like of course the fire fighters didn't move in to put out the fires, they would never move into an area where a gunfight occurred without confirming that it's completely safe. Ambulances didn't go into Portland for the same reason, they need to be sure that the firemen and medics aren't going to get shot. Additionally, the police commissioner didn't just say "Attention, MOVE ... This is America", he said "This is America, you have to abide by the laws of the United States" Which I'd say is a perfectly reasonable thing to say to a group of radicals who believed that the US Government shouldn't exist. It's also stated in an article by NPR (www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/05/13/406243272/im-from-philly-30-years-later-im-still-trying-to-make-sense-of-the-move-bombing) that when MOVE was given 15 minutes to leave their compound, MOVE shot at police instead. The fact that the majority of people who watched this didn't even think to fact check it is amazing.

You know what also isn't taught in schools? The Waco massacre, where there was also an extremist group held up in a building which was burned down by the government, except 80 people died in that instead of 11 and they were white. It's important for kids to learn about the Slavery, emancipation, Jim Crow, and prejudices that still exist today. What's not important for kids to learn about is tragic events like both of these. They can learn about about the government committing atrocities in the 80s on their own time.

The more i learn about the government in the 1980’s and 90’s the more disappointed i become with the country i live in. I understand that some people have different beliefs but we live in a free country and shouldn’t be killed for believing something thats out of the ordinary. An unarmed woman holding a baby shouldn’t be killed, over a dozen kids shouldn’t be burned alive for the beliefs of their parents, and bombs should not be dropped on American civilians. Also our education system has failed us, i grew up 3 hours from Philadelphia and never heard about this until a youtube video showed it to me.

Not trying to justify the police's actions at all, because its insane to bomb your own people like this, but this woman is acting like there was no resistance by MOVE at all and police was there with the sole purpose of killing them. She forgets to mention that 16 officers and firefighters were injured by MOVE members in the shootout. Not that that warrants the way the police handled this of course, but it would have been nice to hear some other accounts on what happened because this woman is (understandably) biased to some degree.
You are also failing to realize thousands of bullets cause friendly fire. How many of these public servants had bullets in them from other public servants not the MOVE organizers?
I just wrote a similar comment. She talks about the police shooting 10,000 rounds but clearly, they were shooting back.
In addition, in 1978 prior to the bombing, the MOVE organisation refused to follow a court order to vacate the premise which was filed due to complains from neighbours whom is fed up with them.
This repeated in 1985 when police attempted to vacate their house after the MOVE harassed their neighbours with blasting political message and generally very unwelcomed due to their harassing behaviours.
