Thanks showing us the countryside life. I grew up in a small village in canton before . When I saw your videos , it reminded me my childhood life and I missed it so much . Thanks a lot.
Wow Daniel thanks for thiz video it's really kind of reminded me of my childhood back then in my hometown in China during the 70'z which even poorer back then!! Everything had changed so much when 1st went back in 2008 basically hometown turned in factories high-rise buildings!!
Unlike the farms in north America, where the houses are generally located within each of the acreage owners, the villages in China tends to line up group of houses together, beside the road. In this configuration, paved roads can serve more houses; the distribution of electricity, internet (land line) and recently natural gas become more economical; the village now have small groups of communities . And with larger pieces of farmland instead of small disjoint pieces, irrigation is easier.
What you said is more correct for north China. In South China, such as Sichuan, extended family tend to build houses next to each other but not among villagers but in general houses scatters near their farming area. Then there are town centers with markets and government buildings. You can see very large villages in South China but most villages in South are much smaller.
The insect graveyard is a sign that the environment is still healthy. Here in Germany the amount of insects has decreased dramatically in the last few decades due to Monsanto insecticides. You can drive through all the way from northern Germany to Italy and your windshield remains clean.

It all look familiar. When my wife and me go back to her hometown, her dad will start calling people and invite them to dinner because the daughter and the laowei are back home. It seems every year the family is getting bigger. Hahaha. Our days are filled with big lunches and dinners with a lot of drinking. Man I love to go back to the village.( small city) in Hebei. You fall in love with the people and country even more year by year.
There is a saying in China that distance relative is incomparable to the neighbors. The neighbors are your childhood friends, possibly attended the same school, attended each others celebration, etc. The modern amenities could not lure the older folks to stay in the city mainly because their roots are there. In our own minds they could be having a 'better' living in the city, that might not apply to them. It is different mindset to the older folks. 'Better' to them might be different than the general perception of 'better'.

Thank you for supporting China, we know in the current political situation is hard for western people to do this, that why all Chinese should support you.
Younger ones do that too, but some what more flexible, In general I don't like this kind of situation, in my area, you need to constantly stand up and drink 1 to 1 with everyone, one after an other, start from the eldest or most prominant person, and everyone needs to do the same. To be polite you need to judge when is your turn to stand up, who you should drink with 1st and last, you will leave bad impression if you do it wrong.

My mother's hometown is a small village near Wuhu in Anhui! Seeing a house like this reminds me of way back when we used to visit.
Was born in Shan dong province, I have a lot of color pencils when in 1980s , I think it’s depends on where you live and your families.
In the 1980s, children in cities generally had colored pencils, but children in rural areas did not necessarily have them.
