It was for the most part decent, but I think there were some liberties taken, in that Kate's belief that it is harder for Uyghur divorced women to remarry or reintegrate into society is based on her personal experience and not the result of even simple study. Anyone who has been close to Chowzhou families, and traditional village families see the exact hardships placed on women there.
I think that Daniel is right in that outsiders misinterpret what is doing on in some of China's initiatives to help the poor, women, or just improve the standard of living. But the nuance is that if we supplement the USA or "the west" for China he and others label it as imperialism or colonialism. I am not trying to start an argument, i just find it interesting.
I think Daniel is far better a vlogger than he thinks. It comes across less prepared more truthful on the streets/out in the fields. If I watched the video without the preface, I would have enjoyed it far more.

For a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society or country, a common language is very important to help the different races and culture communicate effectively and grow. We, in Singapore, totally understands this. It is bewildering to see some people saying that China is forcing the Uyghur to learn Mandarin in order to wipe out their culture and language but it actual fact, it helps them be able to take part in the modern economy and improve their lives.
I use to live in a village/slump when I was a kid in Singapore back in the 1970s. When we moved to a government subsidised public housing, it was a huge upgrade and change in life. If a person had never used a squat toilet with two planks and a bucket underneath and then upgraded to a proper sit down toilet, don’t be talking about these government provided modern housing as having “no character” bullshit.
Great video Daniel. Thank you for making these videos.

The West should learn from Singapore on how to eliminate racial discrimination, as all they do is chant slogans while widening the gap between different races. Singapore has made it a requirement for all races to live together instead of forming mono-ethnic ghettos as in the West, and Singapore has done a good job of eliminating racial discrimination, but the West is blamed for it.

There was a prestigious photo magazine some years ago complaining about African women using plastic buckets to fetch water in the river... They lamented that it was much more photogenic before when the women carried those old heavy ceramic pots on their heads... It wasn't authentic enough anymore...

I’ve toured Xinjiang twice and they both have been really fantastic traveling experiences. Food was amazing since it’s a melting pot of different Chinese ethnic groups, and all I can say is those distinct flavors from various cultural backgrounds mixed very well. Locals are incredibly friendly, and a casual walk around the Bazaar at Urumqi is nothing short of a sensory overload.

At the start when you walked around the farms and entered the tomato farm, I misunderstood and thought that was where they lived. My first impression was those houses were a little shoddy with exposed bricks without paint, but figured they must at least be better than what they used to have in the remote mountains.
I was most impressed when in the later part you visited the actual apartments where these villagers lived. These are likely considered upper middle class living conditions in many developing third world countries. It's a shame none of these real stories make it to the western mainstream media.

Daniel, on your comment on a common language. Here’s an interesting phenomenon on how time’s relationship to culture and language. My family’s been in Canada since the coolie days. And in those days 95% of the Chinese in North America came from the Toisan region, so the dialect my family speaks was over 100 years old. Today when I go to Chinatown in Vancouver and talk to some of the recent immigrant merchants from Toisan, their Toisanese is heavily influenced with a Cantonese accent and they would not understand some of the “pure” Toisanese that we use.
So their Toisan dialect today in China is not the “pure” Toisan but with confluence of Cantonese, but what’s interesting is when they speak Cantonese they have a heavy Toisanese accent. Now even more interesting is that when they speak Mandarin, they have a Cantonese accent without any Toisanese inflection.
So the moral of the story is that if you want to find the original Toisanese dialect you wouldn’t find it in China but in North America.

There are many taisaneses in China. All taisanese speaks differently with different accents depending which town/city they come from. Taishan, fushan, kaipin and many other regions speaks the same dialect but with a different accent. Cantonese is a "language" designed for Cantonese speaker who live in the region (guang ding province) meanwhile mandarin is the national language encouraged by the country (so that ppl can communicate to each other). You can speak whatever you want as ppl can handle mutli languages and dialects.

This is a very good documentary film, so real and vivid and so down to earth about lives in the remote region of Xinjiang. I am so proud of China especially the government. They really care about their people and know how to spread the wealth among their citizens. The major problem of social unrest of any countries, whether it is communist, socialist, democratic, capitalism etc., is wealthy/poor gap. China has been addressing this issue continuously and people feel proud of their country. The West will only report the bad side of China but will never endorse the achievement they have done for their people. I beg you BBC/CNN will never allow your video to be shown in the West. This video really touched me after I watched the Oscar winner movie Nomad Land and compare to what is happening in China. I feel sorry for the Americans being fooled by their government and media. The Americans should really wake up now!!!!
