It’s from Hissing of summer lawns you haven’t got to it yet it’s the last track on the album. Joni is a bona fide genius.
Absolutely fantastic album!
JP only got as far as "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" on side one, so there's more great tracks to cover yet.
I rode my motorbike through a UK 1980s rainstorm to get home just in time for the broadcast of this concert. Stripping of my soaked clothes as I rushed through the house, I was butt naked as the music began. This wonderful memory comes back to me every time I hear this performance. :)
This whole concert is top tier.
Very nicely done live performance of Hissing of Summer Lawn's closing track. The group held together well for a song that has no backing track with audio cues (The Persuasions as an accapella group are naturals for this). Joni used different vocals for the album version, which I prefer, mostly because it also uses the ARP synthesizer, under-appreciated due to the rise of the Moog.
Lyle Mays back there on the Synth. R.I.P. I saw this tour at the Greek Theater in L.A. She turned me on to Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius. Just a perfect evening.
See more of the DVD selections made from the Shadows And Light Tour. She played electric guitar and had a top notch group of musicians with her : Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Lyle Mays, and Don Alias. There are a number of jazzy numbers, a Jaco Pastorius solo bass spot, and her song "Amelia" segues into a great Pat Metheny guitar solo. This selection, with The Pursuasions, doesn't give an idea of the rest of the concert filmed at the Santa Barbara County Bowl in 1979. Don't miss the other stuff, which has some great playing on it.
The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines! That ending with Jaco, Brecker and all never fails to splatter me against the wall!
Best to you~
One of my most cherished memories is seeing Joni Mitchell on this tour at the Oklahoma City Zoo Amphitheater, an outdoor concert, with Joni Mitchell in a lovely yellow sun dress (I believe it was in August). For me, a high point was her bringing out The Persuasions to sing "Why Do Fools F all In Love". Joni Mitchell singing "Why Do Fools...", I mean, how awesome is that?! It was an amazing concert with amazing music legends at the top of their game.
A masterpiece of an album. And a dream lineup! Thanks JP.
Rest in peace, Lyle Mays.
Just what I needed JP. Joni is the embodiment of all that is good and right and beautiful in this screwed up world. Stunning.
I was lucky enough to see Joni twice on this tour. Easily two of the best shows that I have seen.
Joni has a different version of S&L song done with "The Band" during the Last Waltz concert in 1976.....also brilliant and mesmerizing. I don't believe it was included in the film but it can be found on TH-cam...check it out.
I saw this tour live in Edwardsville, IL in Aug of '79 and it was stunning! All of Joni's music is timeless and still relevant. She is an absolute treasure.
I had only heard the version from Hissing of Summer Lawns before today. A great live version of a moving song. You need to hear the original when you get to it on the album.
It's originally on the last song of The Silent Hissing of Summer Lawns album.
So grateful for Joni and these amazing musicians sharing their incredible gifts with us. And for the joy you bring, Justin!
Probably the greatest backing band on the best live album. Pat Metheny said it was like driving a sports car round the block. The band were amazing but never really got to stretch out. However, they did such a good job, it's hard to complain.
For her first live album, Miles of Aisles, rather than put together a band, she just hired one already assembled - Tom Scott and the L.A. Express. For her second live album, since the first one turned out so well, she got another popular jazz band to back her: Pat Metheny Band.
I mean, seriously, what band would say no to backing Joni on a tour? Right?
Metheny and Mays worked together, but in 79 Jaco was with Weather Report, so was Don Alias at some point (and he was Joni's companion around that time), and Brecker was with his bro in The Brecker Brothers. So she did pick the best musicians left and right and formed her band.
Shame you couldn’t do the whole of the “Hissing” album Justin . Her masterpiece in my opinion
So happy to see you covering some more Joni! This live record and "Hejira" are my two favorites by her. Just incredible work.
Pat Metheny's solo on the Shadows And Light live album, which links the songs Amelia and Hejira, is a thing of beauty. I also think that the live version of Woodstock on this album is better than the original.
As always, thruth lives in some grey zone, not in binaries. That's what i get from Joni's song.
I get it from The Sire of Sorrow
Great live album with an amazing band…just get the best players in world to be in your band.
Speaking of acapella, Jacob Collier released a video last night of the choir performance of World O World which is just sublime.

I enjoyed that, but all the time I was thinking of what it might sound like with that synth dialed down to about half the volume during the choral bits, and the voices of the men a bit louder. There were bass vocal sounds being "smudged out" in the synth accompaniment. It was great, but all the time I was straining to hear those sounds that got lost in the mix, so it was distracting. I think it would've also highlighted the synth better. When it's synth time, let it swell up from down low, and fill its space for its time.
I have two irrelevant links today. First some wild guitar (there's more, but the way the guitar fits so nicely with its T-shirt is the strongest first impression). th-cam.com/video/aJn9VQMa4ng/w-d-xo.html
And then there's an Esperanza Spalding interview I think you might like (if you can put up with the occasional well-intentioned new age spiritualism - offered with love, if that makes it more acceptable to you). th-cam.com/video/aJn9VQMa4ng/w-d-xo.html
The sounds on this and the muddy stereo studio playback never enthralled me. The synth seemed dated by 1983. So yes I concur.
I was thinking the same. For me the balance isn't great. Nor the balance between the voices. Maybe I would have heard the parts more clearly if they were acapella.
Overloaded? One dimensional. One of the few jm songs that have so far failed to inspire me. Give me Travelogue any day.
That's (my)truthful two cents worth.
