It's like the sun finally came out again. For so long, Joni said she's done with the music business, and singing, and just wants to paint now. She's not only singing again, but you can see she's really enjoying herself doing so. God bless you, Joni. Life is so much better for you and your music.
GOD BLESS
Yes, in the midst of all the not-so-great news, Joni Mitchell's joy in singing in public is both the sun and a gentle cool breeze.
LOVE seeing all of these younger musicians honoring, kindly assisting & being as thrilled as the rest of Joni's adoring fans!
you know, when people care...everything is possible and you can change your mind...love heals everything
Yes, it’s great to see her excited about singing again!!!
Love her voice
Brandi Carlisle is so kind and compassionate. Thank you for orchestrating this opportunity for Joni to see how beloved she is and for her new and old fans to get to celebrate with her. Much love!
She is a beautiful heart and soul for sure!!! So yes, thank you Brandi for bringing Joni here for a reception like this honoring one helluva musician/s!!!
Was just talking to my friend about this. So moving to see her supporting Joni.
👏🏿👏👏🏾👏🏻🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yes and she was watching Joni to keep
rhythm with her.
Stealing the limelight from Joni.
She hit the highest of high notes early in her career and now she’s hitting the lowest of low notes….phenomenal.
She doesn't have the range she once had but she's still got the soul.
True!! To me she's like Sarah Vaughan: she peaked the whole.
@@tomm2359 She still sounded great!!
@@sonaavak2953 She did and she was enjoying herself! That was the best part.
@@Marioncosmicwiiz I love Sarah! Good example.
I can't get enough of the Joni Jam. I keep rewatching. Keep crying. I am so incredibly lifted from her performance -- THIS is the juice we ALL needed right now. Thank Goddess for JONI!!! (and Brandi, we know she made it all happen -- she's our hometown gal!)
I absolutely love how awestruck and adoring and enraptured Brandi looks when she watches Joni. ❤❤❤
Yes!!!! Miraculous!
Wow, this is so special. If you aren't deeply moved by at least SOME of the songs from the set with BC and Joni, then you don't appreciate her music.
When they did " Both Sides Now ", how could you possibly not have any tears ?
@@egreenbery and how deep to feel that we all belong to this music, shedding tears all over the world for a "good" reason? I cried as soon as I heard Both sides now. Joni still makes this possible: feeling like we are one. Only music can do that.
Likewise! 😱👏❤️
She sang the lower harmony. That's a feat in itself!
she's amazing!
She had the wherewithal to know she doesn't have the range to hit the high notes anymore and, instead of just dropping it an octave, sang the low harmony instead. That's real musicianship right there. Love it!
My talented Joni. ❤️
@@christopherwelch136 Our talented Joni 👏🏿 ❤️ 👌 😉
Joni Mitchell came back from a massive brain aneurysm where she completely had to relearn how to talk, walk let alone sing or play guitar
What a joy to see
"Don't it always seems to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone." A great lesson from Joni.
Joni Mitchell never lies...
@@brnfc j-j-joni mitchel never lies!! Thanks Q-tip and janet for introducing me to her.
A song in which she complains they paved paradise to put up a parking lot. A measure which actually would have alleviated traffic congestion on the outskirts of paradise. Something which Joni singularly fails to point out, perhaps because it doesn't quite fit in with her blinkered view of the world.
Nevertheless, nice song.
@@Captain-Cardboard Oh bore off.Joni was 21 when she wrote this you absolute cretin.
I like how Joni changed up the lyrics to be “The took all the trees & put em in a tree Museum & they charged all the people an arm & a leg just to see ‘em”.
Joni is right; in 2022, most museums charge a lot more than "a dollar and a half" just to get in.
The last three seconds of this song was worth waiting 53 years for. Bless you, Joni Mitchell ☮️💜
Absolutely. My thoughts exactly. It made the event for me.
THANK YOU BRANDI for introducing youngsters to this Legend, this Icon of the 60s!!!! 💕🕊️🌄
LOVE YOU JONI!!!!!
An arm and a leg to see em….. love the rewrite
Legendary!!!!! 💕👑❤👑💕🏆❤🏆💕👑❤👑💕
what I love is that everyone is so overwhelmed by having Joni with them and singing but you can see from her last phrase that all she cared about was nailing it, she did, and you saw the look of satisfaction on her face that she knew it! the performance was all that mattered!
Yep. Still the consummate perfectionist. Gotta love her. And she did indeed NAIL IT!
This is the best thing that has happened in the past couple of years! ❤
It really is. 💓
The best thing i have seen, heard in many years. ☘
It's truly beautiful
It's beautiful gift to see someone honored while in their presence.
Every word came true in 50 years in the song. People have to travel 2 hours out of City to see nature.
This was the music of my youth..those college hippie years... and it is so wonderful to hear her again, and the longevity of these lyrics and tunes...amazing..I am in tears
What a special moment for us all. Thank you Joni. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. The Queen. We will eternally thank you for your song writing brilliance. ❤😊
One the greatest songwriters of all time a genius always somewhat overshadowed by her male contemporaries unfairly I might add. This is great stuff!
I think she pulled her weight quite well, even with all the feminist’s all around her..she stood up for herself in relationships, and stood the test of time..well done, Joni…u remind me of my youth, that I miss so very much..it was a nice visit back with this song…
Well where are they now? Joni is still singing.
@@janefriel6895 First Paul Simon was at the Newport Folk Festival too, Dylan is still around and so is Paul McCartney. Second in no way did I intend to demean Joni in fact my point was her music was just as good as theirs and often better. Great I suppose now I’ll get slammed by their fans. Finally I loved all their music.
I'm crying my eyes out. Oh the memories.
I’ve never cried so hard and felt so good about those tears
This woman is incredible. Joni, i hope you are feeling the love. There is so much, and it surrounds you.
I love the old voices and the young voices (and in between voices) singing together with joy.
they treated a legend like a legend. This is pure joy. wish I was there
She's precious and must be protected at all costs.
God bless Brandi for bringing the Joni Jam to The NFF!
What an amazing recovery and return performance. The brain is capable of relearning, but the human spirit turns miracles into possibilities and Joni Mitchell is one such beautiful, strong spirit.
Brandi, Holly, and Jess add so MUCH to this performance, while still deferring to Joni.
YESSSSSSSSS! JONI WE LOVE YOU! I so wanted to hear you do the last line in that LOW VOICE and you nailed perfectly! Bravo forever!
My favorite is Joni adjusting rhythmically and vocally to accent the background singers. A true legend.
She looks so happy which is all I've ever wished for her for years now she brought so much joy by giving of herself for decades.
I remember the special meaning this song had to the people of Hawaiʻi when Joni first wrote and sang it after a visit to the Islands in 1969. The pink hotel is the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. "Donʻt it always seem to go that you donʻt know what youʻve got till itʻs gone -- They paved paradise to put up a parking lot! "
First there was indeed paradise...what waikiki was..for certain, then the Royal Hawaiian hotel..the first one ..when there was still a quiet country kind of paradise feeling there. I wonder if the Alawai canal was b4 or after..it apparently changed the whole surf break out there.
@@foresttemple1380 The Moana Hotel, which opened in 1901, was the first hotel in Waikiki. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel opened in 1927, and the Ala Wai Canal was created in 1928 to drain the rice paddies and swamps in Waikīkī (which means "spouting fresh water") so they could develop further develop the land (pave paradise).😟
Joni has lived her own circle game. This is beauty. This is resurrection. So cathartic to see
One the best songs in the world.
Thank you Newport Folk Festival for creating the space for this to exist. I can't stop crying at the pure beauty that is this moment. It is absolutely legendary and inspiring in every way. History in the making.
Oh, I so agree with you!
Brandi is like a warm soothing wind swirling around those folks on the stage, not only is she so uplifting, she gives so much of her energy to others!
So glad to see Joni enjoying herself and the songs are taking on such a new life! And beyond that, I want the outfit Brandi is wearing!
Joni, Joni, Joni! You jump-started my life in my youth, now you're helping me through my 70's. Bless you for coming out! Sending all my love
YES!
I’m in my 20s and have enjoyed many years alongside her music! I hope to enjoy many more. From one side to another I wish you joy, health, and good music.
DITTO!!
I want to acknowledge Brandi Carlisle for this….Joni have us so much in music and this is a beautiful moment.
So many people need this right now - thank you Joni 🥰😍😭
Unbelievable! You still got it Joni Mitchell! I grew up with you and your amazing songs. You are a true living legend. Thank you from my young adulthood. Love you and peace.
Love some Joni. To the event planners, crew, staff and all. It is what we need now. Please share this video. Tears of happiness are healthy.🕊🐞🌻🌷The bomb!💣
I want to go to a Joni Jam, to Newport Folk, to anywhere Joni is to get this anointing. After Joni's new lyrics to I'm Still Standing a few weeks ago I can't get enough of Joni Mitchell. My record player is going. Her voice & lyrics are healing a lifetime of pain & freeing me. I feel wings growing. 🦋 I love you Joni Mitchell ❤️
Sincere joy. This entire set is a masterpiece. My heart has broken open.
Love you ❤Joni!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Brandi and Joni!
This is just the best thing ever. I've been a Joni fan for YEARS. She takes a step back, then reappears years later and does this. I can't put into words how happy it makes me feel to watch this. Bless you Brandi for putting this together ❤
Love to see all the younger people playing and singing with Joni! And how lucky are we that Joni is back performing on stage, thanks to Brandi Carlile encouraging and organizing Joni and this fantastic band of musicians - all to honor Joni's music! Just terrific! 💞😘😇🙏🎶🎼🎸🎹
What a woman. What a voice!
My heart is so full watching and remembering... this is a piece of history from then and now as well. God Bless you Joni you made my life happier with your music and you still are!!
Soundtrack of my youth 🎼 🖤
Never stop, Joni, please never stop singing!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Massive respect . Pure magic.
Wow, fucking Wow-- this is one for the ages. goddamn! There is an infinite amount of love up on that stage and I can feel it through this little lap top.
Thank You Newport Fok Festival for those two videos. This is what music is all about: Being together (again), friendships, love, fun and feeling good...
That's what shines so clearly from these two videos with Joni Mitchell and it doesn't get any better. Made me cry but made my day as well...
Thank you so much for sharing and saving these gems and for us all to see and see again and again in the future
Ya made my day. Joni Mitchell still singing and making music. Stay well.
Joni was one of the greatest song writers of the 20th century. Right up there with Bob Dylan, and Lennon and McCartney
right up there with Cohen. At the very top.
I lived in Israel on a kibbutz I 1983 when I was 19. I heard Blue - it changed my life and was so much part of my experience of life. Joni has spoken to me from that time forward. There is no other singer/ songwriter that spoke to me. In Blue she encapsulated my life as a young girl breaking out into the world. Blue said everything then, and it does today. Joni will always remain in my heart, she has taught me do much. I am so pleased that she is being loved in this way. She has meant so much to so many people. Thank you Brandi for bringing Joni back - it means so much. I look back and see i was brave then- but Joni spoke to my heart - she voiced what was so important. Joni Mitchell thank you for speaking to our hearts and soul. I doubt I would be the person I am without Joni
Hello Helen how are you doing today
I am cycling the west coast of Scotland. I am fine and still hold the romance of travel and adventure as I did at 19 when I was first introduced to Joni Mitchell
@@watercyclist23 Oh okay nice I live in Oklahoma City but I’m currently working here in Syria.
Are you originally from Scotland?
Joni deserves a Nobel Prize too!
I grew up on Joni. I'm now 53, and my Mom 72. I wish I'd known of this, my Mom would have loved this. 🥰
Delightful little giggle at the end of a perfect performance
I knew those 2 back up singers were Lucius!!! Amazing!! What a gift!!
I was there with my wife and three 20-something kids. They didn't appreciate what they were seeing until it was all over the news the next day. One of my sones told me he was proud to have been there.
Ok, I cried! There you happy!
I love it when young people take care of older people in friendship and love. Ani difranco did it with Utah Phillips. Lady gaga did with Toni Bennet and Tao Rodríguez-Seeger and Arlo Guthrie took care of Pete Seeger. It warms my heart.
"Look at all those people crying, Joni" - and god if I ain't one of them at home
Never thought I'd see this day ~ but am so very glad I did!
Joni Mitchell - one of the greatest singer-songwriter and composer of our time!
Love this one. She's having so much fun. And the ending is perfect.
Oh my god I love her so much... I had already given up hope after she got so badly sick, thought that is it... just today I checked after a long time if there are any news about her and found out that she just had this gig in july! Wow! Just 🤯 This is just so great and I'm so happy for her!
Chills up my spine. A loss for words.
Ive watched this about 6 times now. Why do i keep getting tears every friggin time?
Joni is magnificent -only you Brandi could pull this off and get her to sing for us again!!! Your compassion reminds me of the love we saw Gaga give Liza at the Oscars this year - What an amazing treat - I'm cheering HARD in Western MASS!!!
Tough gig for that percussionist! 😆 Threading a needle through all the singers’ time and stitching them together, and with instrument changes and breaks throughout.
Great job by all!
God bless you Joni love big yellow taxi my favorite song!
Just pure, utter,gold.
Hi Jane how are you doing today
Joni havin a good time. That's what we want!!
That ending! The best ever!
So grateful.
We were blessed at Northwestern University my Freshman year to have Joni TWICE in '68 and '69 - with nary a single hanger-on!
Joni you are definitely the sun ☀ shining in a bright blue sky. You are an incredible woman. I am from the hometown of Gordon Lightfoot, another Canadian icon. Brandi Carlisle is a wonderful woman/friend. You are blessed to have her believe in you. Love and Prayers from Orillia Ontario Canada 🇨🇦❤️🙏🕊✝️✌️📻🎵
Her last line gave me chills. Amazing artist.
Yay Lucius!!! Love Joni and love you! Thank you for the fun and the beauty!
So good to see you darling , Joni you've been the soundtrack of my life ,thank you for all your efforts in the realm of music, art and poetry but mostly in the realm of love, and oh how I've loved you...
Same here....ditto. Tears rolled while I watched/listened to this short snippet. Come back again, Joni.
awesome, as always! thanks to Joni for giving me permission to use Big Yellow Taxi in our wetlands doc - could not have been more perfect for threatened ecosystem!
so beautiful. so moving in all the right ways. Thank you Joni
wow, it is so nice to see something so wonderful/compared to stuff out there, its even more special- thanks
Thank you for posting this. I can't even. Wonderful!!!
a magical afternoon of the BEST music! bonus points to Jess and Holly of Lucius for their excellent vocals (as always!!) -- and many thanks to Brandi and Joni for bringing this into the universe.
@@StacyNels42U uh...what?
We need that old spirit manifest!!
I love and have always loved Joni Mitchell! So awesome to see her again! Wow! Thank you!
Hello Donna how are you doing today?
OH WOW, I love her and her music. She helped change my life. I got into Art and Music at the University of Georgia(70-74) after playing her albums. For a guy like me, it was a major thing to keep affixed on anything at that Big School. She is an Angel. I hope one day I could meet her. Even drove from Georgia to Haight-Ashbury in Berkley.
God bless her life and soul. Tony Singletary
Boy, I’d loved to have attended that festival! History.
Oh wow! So beautiful to see and hear. Love our Queen of Folk with her own style. Still a force of music!
Hi Hallie how are you doing today
Goodness. Why am I crying through all these songs???💗
Joni said, " if you see her in her songs, you don't get the meaning, but, if you see yourself, you GET it, you'll cry, etc."
We have to. Joni's a Legend. Other songwriters from her time are still around, sure, but none so inspiring and relevant .
This country needs moments like this at this time. Awesome.
Respect, Ms Mitchell you are a Goddess!
I shall now try watching again without tears, but that won't happen, joy oh joy
Thank for this!
Everyone in this video seems very happy which is making me happy!!!😃👍☮️❤️🎤
Great to see Joni again after her health issues.
My favorite Joni song, glad too see her sing again!
Loved this!!! Omg JONI. !!!
