Herring is a saltwater fish.
This would be immediately obvious to Japanese viewers, where seafood (and fish in general) is a much bigger part of their regular diet.
This also means that whoever canned that herring must have had access to the sea; whether this is something that happened before the Walls were erected, or whether this is a relic of an outside civilization, is left as an exercise for the viewer.
I am a Japanese living in Japan. However, many Japanese people do not realize that herring is a fish of the sea.
It is true that Japanese people often eat fish in their daily meals, but many people do not pay attention to whether the fish is from the sea or the river, and the fish called herring is not often on their tables.
So, I think many Japanese, like you, have researched and learned about it after these episodes. Isayama may have chosen such a fish.
I think this is one of the reasons why the AoT is so interesting to watch over and over again.
Fun fact: The characters in the AoT are shaped like upside-down Japanese. Also the herring "Ni-shi-n" written on the can.

I didn't know that most Japanese don't pay attention to where the fish come from, since there aren't (as far as I knew) many freshwater fish that get eaten in Japan (off my head, I can think of... Unagi (eel), Ayu (sweetfish) and Masu (trout)?).
Herring is fished a lot in the North Sea and the Atlantic, so I guess it makes sense that Ben's grandfather, a Scotsman, would know it's a sea-going fish. I like kippers (smoked herring) and pickled herring myself, but I think most Americans and British people these days don't eat it much anymore, because it has such a strong smell and flavor.
Glad to see you guys actually pay attention to all the characters and pay attention to their dialogues, imo all the dialogues in the show r so important even the smallest dialogues from side characters tell you so much about certain characters or certain events in the future. Normally people just go past these things as if they r nothing but they hold so much importance when u have completed the show and look back on them. Top tier writing indeed

I don’t know if you two are reading comments or not but now that we’ve reached this episode I can say that the other guy Bertholdt put in his mouth was just so Bertholdt could steal his ODM gear. He wasn’t wearing any when he transformed but he emerged from the Colossal Titan wearing a set. Sorry if you realized this post-discussion, I’m low on free time these days so I only watch partial parts of the vid at a time but always enjoy the reactions

The other guy the colossal titan took was probably killed. Bertolt took that guy's ODM gear since he didn't have one when he transformed into the colossal titan.

It's pretty crazy that such a big impact was created from just the top half of his body. ONLY HALF. Bertolt's titan is no joke.
Also, fun fact time: The flashback in this episode was only a single panel in the manga. But because the studio was given 12 episodes and not enough chapters to properly adapt into 12 episodes, they decided to extend this flashback. Not that I can complain. This flashback was amazing. Eren will always run off on his own. And Mikasa and Armin will always chase after him.

I love this episode, the big fight is one of my favorite scenes still honestly just so lighthearted i'm so glad you two enjoyed :) excited to see what you think of the next episodes and rest of the season!
That dialoge, plus how the last season is makes it crazy how things are connected.
I guess they've never eaten canned herring? Like kipper snacks? Herring and sardines are the two most common canned snack fish in the west.

Surprisingly, I don't see a comment addressing this: Berthold and Reiner weren't gone the entire 5 years between 845 (the first wall attack) and 850 (the second wall attack). We don't yet know where they were the first 2 years, but for the last 3 years, they've been training as cadets along with the rest of the cast.

omg coming back from the end, i can't believe i'm bawling over mikasa's "i just want to be by his side" and hannes saying the same as always part, cleaning up eren's mess T_T then armin compares bullies and titan, who knows what else we have to compare this "different time different place" with
Thinking back to the first episode a great thing about Hannes evident even then is that he's comfortable in his own skin, he knows who he is, he's honest and doesn't hesitate.
He went to Eren's house when Armin told him, didn't hesitate to say he would fight the titan, realized he was too scared immediately and didn't think twice to make the incredibly difficult decision to leave Carla to die to save the kids.
He's a character you can really respect, and I love how his relationship with our main trio is written.
"He'll give em hell no matter who he's up against.... Until you or i show up to help".
Oh my God someone noticed the herring! I remember that I noticed the herring cause it's an ocean fish, so I was trying to figure out how they would even know what herring is.

Guys I have a question. Have you two ever considered reacting to the anime series DORORO? This was one of the first animes to come out. It was just remade a few years ago upon it's 50th anniversary. Osama Tezuka, "the god of manga," created this masterpiece. And if you love Attack on Titan then this is similar in depth and scope, but on a more intimate scale with just as many surprises from a samurai perspective. Hope you two would consider reacting to it! 💥💥💥💥💥

If u think about it eren is quite a typical shonen main character. It is just coz of the setting , the plot and the way it is written so u may think he uses his emotion too much

Armin said the neighborhood bullies and titans are of different size. But thinking about it, aren't berholdt, Reiner and all the titans outside the walls literally neighborhood bullies since Marley is just across the sea. 😂

Seriously, mikasa already leaves eren alone: v, he just wants to hit thugs and kill titans, you don't have to always protect him,
only do it when not even his titan can save him, as in this case but don't get depressed as soon as he walks away from him, don't depend psychologically on him.

@@rinne-8810 yes, an episode which main purpose is to serve as a filler to reach a quota for the season, people who skip this wouldnt miss anything important moving forward to s4
@@EgoJinpachi_ Just because you are not interested in the storyline doesn't mean something is a filler.
Hanneses character is elevated, aftermath of the battle, Jean and company finding out that 3 of the 104 cadets were titans, Erwin coming to the wall so they can move the horses on the other side, Hange's speculation as to where Reiner and Bert could be etc.. If you skip this all of a sudden next episode Erwin and Jean are with the main group and somehow on horses chasing after Eren which wouldn't make sense.
It's a less important episode but AOT has no fillers.
